Everyone here is saying "because they want to get laid lol" but I think, especially given the example you gave of the partnered guys who then turn the girls down, that there's something else here. It's a power thing. Not power in a "you owe me" way, power like they feel like a rich guy with money to throw around. They like seeing the women smile and be happy to get something, and it makes them feel like a powerful guy.

It's the same mentality as the guy who goes into the bar and says "drinks all around! And have one yourself, bartender!" They like the feeling of their own generosity, and link it to masculinity. It's the same as how some women like to cook for guys, even guys they're not into. It makes them feel feminine.

This will likely get buried and I don't mean to disagree with the entire point of your post, but it loosely resembles something I've seen and experienced before that I think may not entirely fit in with the explanation that it's JUST the SMP at play.

When I was in college I lived alone in a low-income part of town in a building with a wide demograph of other low income people-a few old ladies like your aunt, a handful of college students like myself, old men, even one or two small immigrant families packed into 1-bedroom spaces. A trend I noticed is a few of the older guys (50+yo) were very parental towards the whole apartment building. They were single and otherwise kinda lonely, it seemed, but they'd do favors for the families or help one of the other college students (male or female) with their cars or pick up smokes for the old ladies. I think there is a type of older man who just takes it upon himself to fill that patriarchal role in his community.

They were generally well-loved in both the building and the area and several of us reciprocated as we could-I drove one of them to get groceries every once in a while cause he never got his license, and when I got the urge to bake I'd give plates of cookies and fudge to the ones nearby. I've seen and read of similar situations playing out here and there.

I don't know if it's going to be a dying trend or not, I don't think men in my generation have the same urge to be responsible or take steps to insert themselves into a community, but time will tell.

Why do so many women just sort of automatically do the dishes whenever they are at some guy's place? Some patterns are, I guess, just sort of comfy.

The old guy who brings stuff for your aunt may have figured he's beyond obtaining a sexual relationship but still wants someone to go into elder care with him eventually. He might be buying stuff for more than one woman, in hope. People have a different attitude to money when they reach old age with a plentiful supply.

The drug addict might be useful in other ways to the guy who brings her free drugs. Maybe she's a great place to disappear to that literally nobody in his life or the police know about, maybe she's good at bringing in new customers, maybe she's a good place to meet a person he doesn't want to bring to his place. Maybe she's willing to watch while he shoots up and then take her shot after he's for sure not ODed, and he trusts her to call an ambulance if he does OD. Maybe she's always willing to be the canary that tests a new batch.

The guy who brings your aunt's friend weed... well if the climate is right for it maybe he grows so it isn't so big a deal? or maybe he just buys in bulk and the marginal cost to smoke someone out is no biggie. And once again, maybe she's useful in other ways. Maybe he gets depressed and unmotivated and despairing if he smokes alone too much, but doesn't want all his friends to work out how much he smokes.

These women are losers. They do nothing all day.

There are people who sincerely desire to get themselves into a situation where they can do nothing all day if they want, who would regard that as winning.

A lot of rich guys seem to throw money around not just to impress women but also to impress other rich guys. Of course not all of them do. Sometimes I think they feel obligated too, if they are paying for people they know make substantially less than them. Young guys buying shots and drinks at a bar though, that’s to get their foot in the door so maybe they can get laid.

This is one of the biological aspects of humans (and probably all mammals and maybe even aliens in other star systems).

For humans, using statistical analysis something like twice as many women than men reproduce. So this idea can be boiled down to each women has 1 baby and each men has 2 or 0.

If you are one of the men in the half that doesn't reproduce, you tend to take a high risk/high reward lifestyle. you might hang around the alpha's females 'just as friends' waiting for the opportunity, because getting sex once then getting murdered might give you a better chance of reproducing then remaining a loser. You see this with beta orbiters.

I think this type of genetics justifies something like hopeless spend on a women for this once in a lifetime opportunity to get sex.

All that being said, I'd give it 50:50 that she is fucking him at least regularly. Drugs are crazy, and most women don't brag about their sexual exploits, especially not to their nieces.

As for why, it's essentially the poor-man's bonding ritual. There are studies that show allowing people to do things for you/doing things for other people is associated with the brain releasing dopamine and other social-reward chemicals. We're social creatures, so our bodies are hard-wired to engage in social exchanges. The lower you are on the totem pole, the less of a choice you have on what sort of social exchanges are available to you.

Your aunt sounds like a bottom-feeder (no offense), who hangs out with other bottom feeders. They're both low status, so that's about all they can get.

(I'm sure the men mostly are hoping they'll someday get laid also. Low self-esteem beta-orbiting at its ugliest.)

Men show status through money. Even when it's not the woman you want, women talk. Trust me, your reputation among women in your circles is not unimportant. We talk about who're the creeps, and who we consider friends, and who treats us nicely. And it's not about us explicitly noticing this or admitting to ourselves/our friends that it's essentially buying our favor, but it is. In the same way, you don't consciously decide or admit to yourself that you're just buying reputation, but you are. Because of this process being unconscious/instinctive, you're likely to make mistakes, such as associating with women who're not in the social circle you want a girlfriend from.

At least that's how I see it, none of this is really confirmed or anything. It may just be a habit developed from a cultural norm. It's no longer impolite for a man not to do this, but it's still common enough for women to find it hard to decline because it's normalised and feels nice to get things for free. So because it's somewhat normalised, men go with it because they feel like it's expected or something and end up feeling pressured to buy. It just as well could be that, although the former makes more sense to me. It's probably a mix of both actually.

I'm not so sure it will stop when we have equal average pay. I think it's something that takes conscious directed effort to dismantle, or just loads of time. I don't think there are complex economic reasons for it at this point, it's just a cultural habit of sorts.

I think that, at the end of the day, a part of it is that men don't have a problem with "sharing the wealth", so to speak. You know, we live in a world where men are told that they are selfish. Women often ask "why is he not paying child support, it's his kid!" or some other bs like that, so men, in their own way, are showing women that it isn't that men aren't willing to spend their money on others, it isn't that men are selfish, if a man isn't giving you his money there is a good reason.

It's the wrong way to go about it I think, but I honestly think that that is what it is.
