What makes cheating so bad is that it almost always requires other betrayals, like lying, humiliation, totally disregarding your partners feelings, and and putting them in physical danger. It has layers. That's why it's often unforgivable.

I don't dislike cheating quite as much as I dislike unfairness. I'd dump a man if he promises monogamy, cheats on me and then expects me to be faithful. I'd pardon him if he lets me sleep with someone else as well.

Clearly it's not as bad as murder, but i'd say it's pretty damn bad. Cheating is not a 'victimless crime', and will often tear families and in some cases, communities apart.

This is a philosophical question, TRP is a praxeology. To most philosophies of morality, of course it's pretty bad, similar to other kinds of emotional damage.

For the sake of the discussion, I favor the golden rule. If you're gonna cheat you damn well better not expect your girl not to. So I don't cheat in an LTR because I don't want my partner to, and I have no grounds to expect them to remain faithful if I'm fucking around.

I don't think it's as clear cut as the BP would like you to believe. To the BP any man who cheats, even if the situation were monumentally fucked up, he's an absolutely horrible person. It's a little softer on women because they have the victim card, but they will still often be considered a horrible slut. However if it's a dead - bedroom situation or there's a lot of emotional abuse going on I don't think I consider it particularly bad.

If someone tries to maintain a horrible relationship, they brought it on themselves; and this counts for society too. If you manipulate your partner into staying with you even when you aren't meeting the standard of the relationship, you can't expect it to remain perfect. If society makes it impossible for someone to get out of a relationship with their dignity intact, it's not on the person who was suckered into a shitty deal by the BP.

It's not worse than anything illegal. But is often the root of motivations to steal, stalk, assault and murder.

It's not a crime so it's not that bad. Although I do believe adultery should be made illegal.

The general consensus is that cheating is bad, but 3rd wave feminists generally find it to be empowering, and a "you go girl" type of thing. So outside of 3rd wave feminism, cheating is bad. In their circles, its completely ok because women are empowered and such.

When I was younger I probably would have thrown in my hat with the "worst thing ever " people.

As an adult, I find myself ascribing less weight to the concept, and more to the situation.

Me and my last boyfriend broke up after 2 1/2 years then after 10 months got back together recently. If he had sex with someone else then or in future I kind of don't care. We are at a point now where we have basically psychic powers of mind reading. The last serious yelling/crying conversation we tried to have about "where is our relationship going" ended because we both started laughing at each other. Sex seems so superficial in this retrospect. Also while I don't ascribe to that Sex at Dawn BoBo BS, I think it's relatively unrealistic to assume a man is going to have sex with only one woman for the rest of his life.

One the other hand, while I was single a friend set me up with a friend of hers who she said was single and "a really nice guy" and "not a fuckboy". Three dates in I found out he was in a 1 1/2 year relationship with a girl who is young enough to be his daughter ( he is 36, she just turned 20), who he refuses to bring in front of his friends or professional colleagues. She lives a few days to weeks at a time at his apt before he makes her go home and she posts depressing ass poetry on tumblr. He also had at least one other girl who he was seeing at least occasionally, and was clearly trying to fit me as an alternative to the two (or more). When I found that out I almost hit the fucking roof. Because we share several friends though, I had to be diplomatic.

Depends on what morality you subscribe to.

If you take commitment seriously, it's direct violation of it, so in context of relationships it doesn't get much worse than that - physical violence is one worse thing IMO.

If you don't, it's a non-issue - you cannot cheat, if you don't make commitment in the first place.

I think it depends on how much the other person has invested.

The worst case scenario, for example, could be that the person you married has been cheating on you for years with someone you know. That would mess your head up so, so badly. Your sense of reality would be smashed.

My experience with it was pretty bad as it messed up my life path quite a bit. I was very angry and not really in control of myself. I was living with her at the time too, and she didnt come out of it too well either. In retrospect though, it might have been just as bad if she broke up normally with me and cheating was a clean break (cos I wasnt going back after that). It was kind of a benefit to it because I would have kept trying to keep it together for another year or so at least.

On the less severe end, it's a sign that you probably shouldn't be together. Ive been dating my gf now about 6 months. If she cheated on me, Id finish it but I dont think Id be too devastated.

Cheating is taking lying to an extreme. What I mean by cheating is that your partner doesn't know. If they know and are okay with it, it isn't cheating. So if you have to lie about where you are, who you are with or what you are doing, you do not trust your partner with your activities. By not trusting someone you claimed to trust, you create distrust in yourself, such as your actions. Relationships built on trust will therefore collapse. It is also a very selfish thing to do. If you are with someone and desire someone else, it is best to end your current relationship if you cannot resist cheating.

It is immoral if you consider deception immoral. What I would say though, is that killimg intimacy in your marriage is going to lead to cheating, so no one can really sit on the sidelines when a long term partner cheats. There are exceptions, but if you aren't fucking your husband or wife on the regular, it isn't encouraging them to only sleep with you.

dishonest/lying/cheating comes down to stealing something, stealing the truth from someone else. stealing is wrong. if the person being cheated on knew that you were capable of cheating they would have never dated you in the first place, and so you lied to them, stole precious time and emotions invested on you when they could have done something else, gotten together with someone else who might have not stolen from them. cheating is immoral, there's no argument disputing this. if she was open about wanting to see other dudes that would be fine and the dude can back out of the relationship on his own terms instead of finding out that he was cheated on behind his back, some dudes even choose to stay as long as she's honest about what she's doing. the dishonesty is what kills it because once you ruin trust and especially in such a way there's no more relationship she becomes worse than a stranger.
