I am super suspicious of guys who have a girl friend that is “like a sister”. It seems like just an excuse for a weirdly intimate relationship between a girl and guy. These relationships usually involve going to dinner together, taking trips, being emotionally vulnerable, having sleepovers, maybe even previously dated or had sex. Before a relationship, that’s fine it’s their life, but once in a relationship this should change imo.

This came up from the following: I was hanging out with my friend who just got married. I don’t see her very often, and noticed the weird relationship between her husband and his friend that’s a girl. I brought up how weirdly close they seem. She said everyone mentions that, but they are “just like brother and sister”. And then it hit me that I think she has been fed this belief by her husband and his friends. (There are many red flags for this relationship btw that I won’t go into now).

Here’s an excerpt from that conversation:

Her: They’re like brother and sister.

Me: Oh they are brother and sister?

Her: No, no, they are like brother and sister.

Me: Oh like how you are with your brother?

Her: No. I’m not that close with my brother.

Me: I’m not close with my sister like they are. So who’s brother and sister are they like?

I am sure there are some exceptions, but I think it’ll probably be situation-specific.

How do you feel about "brother and sister" relationships?
