I was pondering something related earlier today. I sometimes hear men say they need to be needed (by their GFs/wives). It has also been said that whoever cares less in a relationship has the upper hand. This type of messaging is dangerous. It reminds me of a concept called "learned helplessness" that's seen in abusive relationships, where the victim is convinced that they have no control over the situation and gives up trying to leave.

One of the ways my ex convinced me not to leave was by telling me I'd end up homeless if he wasn't there to "take care" of me financially (spoiler alert, he actually financially abused me). I'd escape the house after being beaten, turn around and walk right back because where tf was I gonna go with no money? Under a bridge? I thought I had nowhere else because the cops wouldn't do shit, he isolated me from everyone else, and he convinced me I had no control.
