It’s super popular and super basic. Salty, microwaved food, iceberg lettuce salad, canned soup, and very basic breadsticks. Once in a blue moon I’ll get a hankering for that crap lol, I do like the soups, but there are better, cheaper Italian restaurants in my city that don’t require getting a beeper because the wait list is so long 🙄.

Once witnessed a proposal where the dude didn’t bother to pause the basketball game he was watching on his phone. He sat across from her and asked, while occasionally glancing down at the phone balanced on his knee. He then went back to ignoring her and straight up watching the game while she excitedly called her mom. This was when I was waitressing in fine dining so beware the faux-Tuscan heart that can emerge even in finer surroundings.

😁😆 let's be honest, it's leagues above actual McDonalds or a drive through Italian restaurant, but it isn't actually that good. Most chains are just aggressively mediocre and definitely not anything to write home about. Our small hometown got one not too long ago and people about lost their minds. My dad , who was a hermit for the last 20 years, started going to eat there in person. I'm happy it broke him out of his shell, but it's funny that it was an olive garden that did it . That said, if you're feeling like shit and want a substantial amount of food to survive the next couple of days off of, the takeout soup, breadsticks and entree is enough to do it. It reheats decently because it is literally made to be reheated.
If you're gonna eat at a chain Italian place and you've got the options, I'd go for Carrabba's every time though.

That's pretty close, actually. Except instead of pizza it's Americanized Italian dishes.
I wouldn't call it the McDonald's of Italian food because no one pretends McDonald's is quality food and they're at least honest about what they're serving. Olive Garden genuinely wants you to think you're eating quality Italian food for a good value.
In truth you could make some fairly accurate recreations of their dishes with dry pasta and jars of sauce. Maybe you really roll up your sleeves and grate Parmesan from the block instead of the cheap pre-grated stuff.

I feel like vday is such a bad day to propose. Restaurants are crowded even the really shitty ones.
This is a huge moment in your relationship that is supposed to have deep meaning. Nothing like a guy getting down on one knee with a whole crowd of random people watching while munching on their unlimited salad and garlic bread.

Some people in the original thread are complaining that we have expensive expectations but if money is tight, you are better off putting the budget of the restaurant meal towards a home cooked meal (and clean up after yourself) -- because at least that is personal.

I think I’d be embarrassed by a public proposal. It just reeks of attention seeking imo, but I’m a pretty private person. My ex proposed to me privately in one of our favorite places. It was very unromantic and more of a practical proposal but despite being a romance writer, I don’t actually like men trying to be romantic in real life. It usually is just over the top or feels contrived. Luckily I’ve never been with very romantic men. I tend to look at the big picture and not the little things society says they’re supposed to do to prove their love.

There's still some hope out there! My dad is punjabi like raised in a village traditional punjabi but he studied and lived abroad in Europe so he was used to cooking and cleaning for years. My parents have been married for 29 years and even now if my mum doesn't feel like cooking she will tell my dad during the day and he'll buy ingredients after work and then cook. My mum also has arthritis so once every 2 weeks my dad will take a day off work and do a deep clean of the house from top to bottom like scrubbing the bathroom, cleaning the oven, hoovering etc.
In turn it means my brother has learned from his example so when my uncles would ask him how he wants his wife to be like he said he wants someone who works. My uncles then said if she works who is going to cook or clean and he said we'll take turns, what kind of grown adult doesn't know how to cook or clean? I was laughing at all the surprised pikachu faces in the room

Same here. The mothers encourage it, and everyone gangs up on the DIL once he brings a wife home and if she ever sticks up for herself since the son can never do wrong. Girl’s mother/father will brush it off and tell their daughter it’s how life after marriage is and because of the internalized misogyny.
Then she literally can’t leave because she is fighting for equality not just from him but his entire tubbar [clan]. They won’t let her leave because it will “ruin their reputations”.
Why get married to men from such families, you ask? Family/cultural pressure. Why not just leave him? Also family/cultural pressures.
Brown folks love to tout their low divorce rates but it’s because the DILs are pressured to stay for the sake of appearances. Everyone gangs up on them.
All the misfortunes having to deal with LVM men are amplified with desis.
Doesn’t matter how educated or smart you are, they will pressure you to prioritizing mommy-ing their sons over everything.

I had my first real bf when I was 20 and he was 19. I remember he started talking about marriage and boy did I run. I literally left the state to get away from him. These guys out there wanting to marry young women are insane. We have zero idea who we are or what we want at that age. You want to get hurt, go ahead and marry a young woman. I didn’t get married until I was 28 and I was caught off guard by that b/c I wasn’t looking at all. Your 20s should be about finding yourself. I feel so sorry for these young women who think marriage, a suburban starter home and kidlets are all they need. I suppose for some it is, but the happiest women I know carefully considered these big decisions instead of rushing into them just because it seemed exciting at the time and some dude was willing to marry them.

Yeah my first love and I drove to the city an hour away to go to Olive Garden. It wasn't a holiday, he just wanted to take me on a nice date. He was a few years older than me and this was a first time thing for me. He showed up with flowers in nice pants , shoes and shirt. He opened the doors for me. It was nice getting away for a bit and talking all evening. It was nice....but I ALSO was 17 and this was an adventure for someone from a small town. Our first Valentine's, I was 18 and he picked me up from my grandmother's house all dressed up with a diamond white gold necklace he bought to match the one she gave me and took me to local farm to table style place with fireplaces and fancy lighting. He even had the receipt in the box with a protection plan in case anything happened to it and it needed to repaired. It was really nice. I dated that dude for 3 years and it didn't stay that way forever, but not a bad way to START dating. I've been through some shit over the past 10 years since then, but I still expect more than an Olive Garden proposal because I literally was treated better than that as a practical child and we're grown ass adults who can be more creative than that.
Edit : don't give diamonds to young people without locking jewelry boxes. College freshmen will steal it and then you're just out $500 bc protection plans don't cover that.

Let's be fair. In many rural places Olive Garden might be one of the nicer restaurants available.
I went to one for the first time recently (first and last date with a guy.) The food was plentiful and hearty, but not in any way truly Italian. I was actually surprised at the prices. I though it was expensive for what it was. You can pay about the same amount or maybe just a tad more for a really nice independently owned place in a larger town/city for really good quality food and much better atmosphere. I guess if you're really hungry, want to carbo load and have enough left over for a doggie bag, Olive Garden will do, but for a romantic date or a proposal - no way.
