As the OP never revealed her location, we don't actually know if her relationship was legally consensual. By banning me, you are potentially tacitly endorsing statutory rape. Many people saying it is legal where they are from are probably unaware of the subtle restrictions from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. But since I am a woman, and unlikely to be believed, I invite you to Google the statutes for the US and Canada. But, banning me is just probably altogether easier.

There's a beautiful passage in the introduction to a book on justice and the Hol.oca.ust, Hope and Memory, by French political philosopher/historian Tzvetan Todorov about Aus.chwitz survivor Primo Levi. I won't spoil it for you other than to say that the passage about Levi's work mentions "light." In any case, that's you. The way Todorov describes Levi applies to people like you. Considering what you're grappling with, I can't recommend that book enough.

I was a non-clinical advocate for survivors of dv and can attest to that sense of trial by fire and feeling overwhelmed by flak in the face of such life and death reality. Though the radfem service I worked with had very tactful rules about interfacing with survivors, because I wasn't a clinical professional, I wasn't held to any rules of professional conduct when dealing with trolls and ab.use apologists who'd periodically invade the service's online groups. I used to rip the trolls to pieces for the merriment of clients, then banish.

Gallows humor was actually one of the survival tools we shared (it wasn't therapy but communal support or practical help and resources), and I think the aggression helped me cope, but I'd have lost my license if I'd had one.

It made me appreciate the contraint required of professionals in the field, particularly women and particularly radical feminists, who have to deal with the same kinds of walking abortions who try to justify dv, rape and psychological torture and blame the victims of it.

Whether they grunt this stuff in caveman-speak or try to couch it in sciency mumbo jumbo-- or in Richard Dawkins/Sam Harris-type pseudo-rationalist bs like the idiot who accused you of relying on "logical fallacy" (btw, did you hear about the rape and harassment scandals that blew up among Dawkins' and Harris's acolytes? Holy shit)-- they are garbage and undeserving of civility. But if you're a pro, you represent the profession and can't simply flame them or scribble bad haikus about their micro-dicks... except maybe in your private sphere.

That's something else I recommend-- funny, insightful friends who really get all of it. You're in a war, not merely a profession. You need combat level support.

You are doing an extremely important job, it must be extremely difficult and the guilt you probably must feel when you can't help every children but remember that your most important job is your sons, of get need a healthy mother who is there (I'm sure you are there for them 100%, I mean so you don't go in the wall) so they can become HVM and continue what you're doing instead of becomming like these men. The story of this girl angers me so much, I'm not surprised by the reaction from majority on reddit but it's so incredibly dissapointing. Right now the story of Courtney Stodden really scares me. In her case the obvious grooming was ignored by everyone and all the blame was placed upon her. WHEREAS this 51 year old who married a 16 year old was free from questioning. Her parents consented to this.

Well, in those cases, there's nothing wrong with those, weirdos! Child marriages were permissible long ago, and even today in some places, and that's why normal people are fighting it because we know it's wrong. Children's heads aren't fully formed yet, and pedophiles know this, so they target children because they are at the peak of their youth AND malleable. Some people are truly disgusting. I know that working on jobs that deal with trauma can be traumatic over time to the worker—this is why I decided to not pursue my intended career because I didn't want to deal with trauma caused by dealing with other people's trauma—but I'm proud of you for making it through. What incredible work you do, it sounds like you are an amazing woman. I'm so sorry about what you are going through. I think my main piece of advice as you asked I would say for now, is to take good care of yourself, do what you need to to start your healing from PTSD. Take a break if you need to, somewhere beautiful where you shower yourself with care. And then yes, there is a lot you can do. What if you wrote letters for papers like the Guardian about your opinion, and some of what you've seen? Also - when it comes to public policy, it is incredible what some words in the right ears can do if you know who to speak to. I work in policy, and I know this first hand! Most people don't use the political levers available. They assume they can't change things, but it's actually much easier than you would think if you know what to do. I'm glad you are here on FDS, there are so many of us against this depraved culture. Huge social movements have started with relatively small groups of like minded individuals. I’m a crime analyst in a unit fighting CSE/trafficking. I deal with stuff like this all the time. I don’t think people (and specifically MEN) realise that these PREDATORS use this boyfriend tactic to groom their young victims. The child ends up thinking they’re special because they have an older boyfriend who can drive and take them places, who can buy them nice things (in reality it ain’t shit but these are kids we’re talking about), they shower them with love and affection and are able to come pick them up any time. This man is an opportunist predator who knew exactly what he was doing with this young lady and her mum. This is a slippery slope and I think if this man has done it once, he will do it again. As OP has said, this man is clearly a paedophile - what if she does stay with him, what happens in 10 years time? Has she reached her expiry date? Will he need to find a new victim to groom?

What bothers me is that because she’s at that age where she’s reaching the “barely legal” threshold, people (men) think it’s ok. In the U.K. the age of consent is 16 so it’s scary to think of how many cases have been ignored for example by CPS because they don’t think there’s enough there to prosecute cos the child is “almost legal” but actually, they’re 15 and have been groomed for several years.

Yet as you have pointed out and other commenters have - people turn a blind eye to this grooming process. So many girls genuinely believe these men are the love of their lives, they’re going to run away together and get married and have kids. Etc etc. To the young girls it’s a fairytale and it’s heartbreaking to see from the outside because you see the offender and you realise how strong and mind altering the grooming process is because these men are usually nothing. They’re disgusting pigs who don’t value women and can’t get a date with a woman their own age because women see through the shit- they’re usually lowlifes with no job who spend their days wearing 3 day old clothes, festering in their bedroom in their mommy’s house playing video games.

Taking a stand against the depravity of men takes a lot out of us. I know I personally can only reply to misogynist posts or comments every so often and it is completely draining. I know that most of the time it's not worth my time and energy, but other times it feels like I have to say something, not to change the man's mind, but for whatever women are reading and ingesting the garbage these men spew.

I know they can be many, and it is an impossible task to fight against all of them. The best we can do is step in when we have the mental space and fortitude to argue, keep strength in our sisterhood, and know that one small act of fighting back against them at a time we will collectively claw our way forward.
