Why does he absolutely want to bring her to his brother's wedding if not for clearly marking himself as taken on a public event and therefore access a certain status ? So he wants the status and every superficial benefit of it without the paperwork and obligations. He could totally go by himself, I don't see the big deal. Unless if it's for the reasons mentioned above.

Is there a place in this discussion for long-term, living apart together partners? Some of us have already been there, done that with marriage, and don't want to again.

On the other hand, I know if my partner got this kind of invitation and I wasn't invited, I just don't think I'd take it that personally. And quite frankly, I'd be relieved beyond measure not to have to go shopping, buy a new dress and shoes, and mingle with people. Bye, go have fun! let me know how it was. It's sean's wedding if he wants he can ask for everyone dress like murderous clowns, it's up to them to accept or not.
