I got proposed to with a piece of scratched up tacky costume jewelry that was given to him by a friend of his. It was so ugly, and like 3 sizes too big for me. I was definitely coerced into saying yes and accepting it, and I fucking hated the damn ring. When I left him he asked for it back and I laughed and tossed it in the box with the rest of his shit. Proudly. To my face. Like he thought that it was romantic that money didn't define our "love." We had only been dating 4 months at that point, and he had absolutely coerced me into saying yes. He proposed in a super public way while we were on vacation in another state, and had been making "joking" comments all weekend about leaving me there if I didn't like my Christmas present. I knew he was broke as fuck, I had paid for the whole vacation, and was honestly planning on leaving him because I was so stressed and uncomfortable with his brokenness. See, this is what I am also conflicted on. I can understand the sentimentality, although it needs to be conversation between both people, not something that one person just goes off and does.
One of my friends dated this girl for ten years and asked her how she would feel about an heirloom as her engagement ring. She wasn't about it.
Honestly, I at least want the option of choosing my ring. For me, I don't like the idea of "taking" what belonged to someone else, living or dead. I had a boyfriend who said he wanted to ask his grandfather for his grandmother's ring when he was going to propose. I suggested that the ring belongs to his mother, then his sister -should anything happen to his mom-, not anyone else.

My then-boyfriend proposed to me with the pull tab from a can of soda as a ring. I was 19, and thought it was cute. I accepted his proposal and told him not to buy me a ring, bc we were just poor young soldiers. I stayed unhappily married to that man for 30 years, and tomorrow our divorce will be final. I made excuses for his poverty, and you know what, he never leveled up. Never learned to save, never learned to reign in his spending, never learned to buy quality things. Im sick, thinking of the money I have watched that man waste over the last 30 years. I’m a poorer person today (financially) than I would have been had I not allowed a man to get away with cheapness from the very beginning.
The ring he chooses is symbolic of a lot of things, and romantic love is the least of them.

Marriage benefits the men much more than the women, unless he is of remarkably high value.
You want to cook every meal, do all the cleaning, pay half the bills or more, watch him play video games, catch him on dating apps, ignore his porn addiction, put your credit score and finances at risk, have him cheat on you while pregnant, drink to excess, abuse you, possibly have your children taken away or pay child support one day, never have time to work out or see friends, have him spend his free time with the boys, endure his in laws, be taken for granted after the honeymoon period, share your assets.... all so he can leave you for a 27 year old stripper when he’s 68 and take part of your hard earned pension after 50 years of dedication to him to fund their new lifestyle? (Last one is a true story of a family friend, sadly)

You reminded me of something I saw on the "Am I The Asshole?" sub a couple weeks ago. The submission was about this guy who was upset that his wife wanted a gift after having their second or third child.
The comments were all up in arms about "push presents" and how it's basically like a wooky button for the woman. Well shit, if I pushed or had a human cut out of me, damn right I want a token of appreciation after my body goes through all of that trauma! People reward themselves for the stupidest shit all of the time, yet they have the nerve to think it's materialistic and excessive for a woman to have a piece of jewelry -or whatever of her choice- to enjoy? And once again the reason that a woman always retains her own separate bank account in the relationship.
My sister bought herself a watch with diamonds around the bezel after she had my nephew. My brother in law took a ski trip to Colorado to see one of his friends shortly before her due date, so she was more than annoyed. As she saw it, he got his trip -which she was very gracious about- so she gets the watch. Simple as that.

The only issue I have with expensive solitaire engahement rings is that they can never get the prongs right. May not bother some people but it's always sooooo imperfect and not fully aligned, or different shapes. It drives me crazy if the piece was really expensive. I sometimes wish my husband got me something a bit cheaper because my ring frustrates me a lot and they just can't fix it properly. Also a diamond can be quite small and be really expensive or huge and cheaper. I'm not sure if anyone would look at mine on my finger and think it's expensive because it's a very modest size and dainty ring. But $20? Hell no, I'm allergic to a bunch of metals and it's something you wear for a long time.
