The fact that we have to have this kind of discussin 2017 is the main problem I have with this cultural / gender clash.

If a dude wants to sit with his legs somewhat apart, he should be allowed unless some chick wants to sit next to him, then he would close his legs.

If some chick wants to put her bag on a seat so that she is more comfortable, that's fine, so long as someone else isn't going to try to sit there. If asked, I'm sure she would move her bag.

Just ridiculous to me.

i always take either the bus or subway into NYC since i hate paying tolls. ive seen a lot more women with their purses or shopping bags in an extra seat then men with their legs folded or spread. its annoying when people complain about men trying to get a little bit comfortable on the small seats in the subway when in reality women put their shit everywhere. they either put it in an extra seat or in the fucking walking path part instead of the overhead bins things.

Christ this is such a non-issue. The solution in all cases is just saying "excuse me, may I sit?" In society you have to communicate with other people. That's how it works.

And secondly, it's not men's genitalia in the way, it's bone structure. The Q angle of the femur makes it significantly more uncomfortable for men to sit with their knees together. Most of the time, it's physiology, not impoliteness. In those cases where it is rudeness, just calmly ask them to move.

I think that most men and women would either close their legs a bit or hold their bags if someone needed a seat, if someone asked. So I don't really see man spreading or she bagging as a big deal until the person doing so becomes a problem. I.e. When someone needs a seat but the man won't move his legs/ the woman won't move her bags. That's when it becomes a problem.

Oddly I haven't too much of this, usual school kids actually, and I commute by transit. Hell I've done it a couple times with groceries or odd big item, but I'm ready to move it when people get on the bus.

I think what pisses me off about this is how much of a non issue this is. Just all the person nicely. Trying or succeeding this into some sorry a of bylaw infraction is absurd.

I'm not okay with anyone taking up more than one seat, but as a daily NYC commuter (and male) I ABSOLUTELY notice men doing this far more often than women. They regularly and purposefully take up two spaces (or one and a half) so that no one will touch them. The primary victim of manspreading isn't women. It's everyone and it's a shitty thing to do. You can argue that she will move the bags if she's asked, but if there is someone sat opposite you - which there clearly is - then it's common sense to not cross your fucking legs like that, because you're both blocking anyone from sitting in the adjacent seat, and forcing the guy diagonally opposite you to stick his legs in the aisle causing a pain for him and everyone that walks past. Plus it's uncomfortable af idek why she's choosing to sit like that.

Solution:

Place right butt cheek on edge of seat.

Slowly, but with purpose, slide butt cheek towards encroaching bag until both butt cheeks are on seat.

Take right leg and swing it over so that it touches but does not push the leg of the offender.

Cough loudly for 30-45 seconds. Blow your nose too, for good measure.

If she stays in her seat, she won't be leaning towards you anymore!

I honestly don't think man spreading is a huge issue (in my experience with public transit.) The worst is when people take the outside seat (so no one can sit next to them) when there are no spots left or when people don't give up their priority seating to those who need it. I know I personally will sometimes leave my bag next to me, until options are limited for those getting on. For me, as a lady, I feel safer doing so. I've had people sit next to me that have made me feel very uncomfortable. I'm not defending this woman, just sharing my experience.
