I have noticed this trend within my lifetime in my own music scene, and heard tale of it from other music scenes. Even the PC people form when I was 20 are like "OK but srs you weren't supposed to toottttallllly buy into this, smash the pussy yo or get DAT D"

Nowadays there's a facebook/twitter witch hunt every week over some band member allegedly fucking some underage girl, which has been par for the course for the history of rock and roll, and most of the dudes doing it are like 20 anyways so who cares

I personally think the internet has done a number on people and fundamentally changed our lives. That's probably why we have less sex. And yeah, that could be considered an uncool change but to think people in the past were all partying, drugs-using bros compared to now is just stupid. People are still out there doing drugs and going to parties. Besides, those things aren't necessary to have sex at all. Millennials are still having sex, even if at a slightly lower rate than in the past.

I don't see any much evidence of this. As a millennial myself, I can tell you partying and coolness and rule-breaking haven't disappeared by any means. The majority of people I know regularly drank and did drugs until they settled down, or continue to do them.

When's the last time you went to a place full of backpackers or travellers? Believe me, drugs sex and bad choices aplenty.

I don't see the connection between PC-ness and prudeness.

Millennials are fucking. It's the shrinking of the middle class phenomena. The rich (high value) kids are fucking like rabbits and the low value kids are getting zero sex. There's no more middle of the road. Even in the group of friends I have, there's guys who fuck so much it's getting boring to them and guys who have had dry spells longer than a year.

No middle ground anymore.

Boring millenial here, checking in. I think millenials are just having less sex because we're more aware of consequences now. I mean, sex ed has vastly improved, and most of us were beaten over the head with pics of STDs and tales of teenage pregnancy in our health classes. If you've seen Mean Girls, think of the health class in that movie lol.

Additionally, sex/parties used to be one of the only forms of entertainment back in the day. I'd say our problem is we've got so many things to do and think about, like video games or all of our mountains of student debt or how many of us are still living with our parents well into our twenties.

Nowadays, people are trying so hard to be careful, not offend, not do the wrong thing, follow the law...that its killing all the elements that made previous generations attractive to each other.

One explaining factor here is the presence of social media and the internet. How many times have you heard someone older say "I would have been screwed if they had Facebook back at my parties?" If you got busted doing drugs at a party in the 70s, 80s, or 90s you'd stand a good chance of having it all blow over in a few years, or when you moved to a different city. Today? A great deal of those youthful indiscretions are immortalized on social media, and anything more serious (say, a possession charge) is just a google search away.

There's less privacy, and less privacy means people are more guarded with their behavior.

There are those of us more conservative leaning millennials who are currently grinding it out on the career and personal development front, delaying the gratification so we can live a better life later down the road.

You don't hear about us because we don't go on fancy trips and post pictures on instagram. We don't try to broadcast to the world about how we met chicks at clubs because we'd rather save up money and not spend it on stupid stuff. You don't see us at concerts dancing to loud music because those things aren't as attractive to us as listening to cool podcasts on philosophy and science.

I'm a more introverted guy so of course chances of me getting laid is lower. I think millennials are just like the previous generation, they fuck, they study, some of them are boring, some of them have exciting potentials. The one thing that's concerning me the most is the rate of millennials are aligning with the radical left. This is a major difference between our gen and the previous gen. The radical regressive left has dominated academics and media. It's quite hard nowadays for me to find like minded conservative leaning millennials outside of the Internet. I have to assume that everyone under the age of 35 I encounter are all progressive liberals. Perhaps it's just where I live.

They're not getting laid bc they're less social. IMO the top 20% in attractiveness/social status of both genders seem to be having most of the sex and doing most of the partying. Average people are still fucking one another but maybe at a lower frequency than before bc of internet/being stressed students. The bottom 30% aren't fucking at all. The bottom dudes are staying inside and masturbating to porn rather than approaching and pursuing their SMV equals.

I think another factor is the Social Media Panopticon.

Once upon a time, people had time away from other people. This allowed them to develop a strong sense of self, and of one's ultimate existence as an individual. This time was spent away from others, away from the control and social coercion that came from others. This helped ferment rebellion, a sense of personal agency and personal space/barriers, etc.

Helicopter Parenting is often part of this too, but when one is constantly with one's peer group due to social media, when one's private behavior is posted up on social media and thus offered up to their critique and regulation... when one forfeits one's privacy..

You can see where this is going. "Freedom from others" is something that kids aren't really getting these days. They're permanently regulated not just by helicopter parents and interventionist authorities but by their own peer groups. They can never escape the high school playground.

They end up being tame and conformist and not really defining themselves. They comply with authority and trust it implicitly (as opposed to being suspicious of it), the "norm" for them is trying to avoid dogpiling and critiques from each other. Their sense of self is so interwoven up with other people, they barely even have a "me, apart from others" concept.

People are having less sex for a couple reasons, none of which are really about "cool".

The first problem with this theory is that it can't be artificially reproduced. If I asked you "how do I get laid?" And you told me "be cooler", that means nothing.

If I then extrapolate "cool" to be "do drugs and party", that leads into the second problem with your theory in that it answers nothing; being a guy who parties and does drugs but is still average SMV is going to net you the same average SMV results that you would have otherwise gotten, except now you're getting party girls instead of straight lacers.

The third problem with your theory is that our culture is not a beatnik bohemian one anymore. Our culture isn't Woodstock, it's getting likes on social media and therefore SMV often translates directly into "cool" hence supporting argument 1 that "cool" cannot be manufactured; it's missattributing the cart as the horse.

The fourth problem with your theory is the actual premise. People are having less sex because for men, there is too much competition from Chad's, and the work involved in becoming an attractive male as defined by women is approaching unattainable unless you live a very particular lifestyle and for women there are not enough Chad's to satisfy individual women's desires for connection with men of quality.

People who have a lot of choice will rarely be satisfied with any one of them.
