I don't know if this has been said but men and women are only valued when they are 'successful' within their own socially ascribed parameters. For women that's generally 'beauty, thin-ness, chastity' and for men it's generally 'academic excellence, wealth, macho'.

To clarify when i speak of value I'm not referring to that which is assigned by leeches who pursue people for money or sex. But that assigned by general everyday people who tend to value only the people who are "socially successful".

A poor hardworking single mom getting raped doesn't garner the same sympathy as a pretty suburban housewife getting raped. Similarly an academically excellent student getting murdered more sympathy than an average student who got murdered. Race and religeon can also decrease apparent 'value' of people.

People are more willing to ask for brutal punishments for those who perpetrated violence against these perfect victims but would often question the victims when poor and marginalised people are killed.
