Holy shit, it still bemuses me why some people come on to a DEBATE sub and then downvote every single thing they disagree with instead of I don't know, DEBATING the points. It's doubly pathetic now that you actually have to put some effort into downvoting people.

Most people respond to a well thought out, well written post with defensive tripe like "Wow, why are you talking to me? You don't know me or my life, don't talk to me." and then downvote the well thought out post for good measure. Even though nobody was talking about them (the individual) to begin with.

Why even come to a debate sub when it's clear they have zero interest in it?

When I became a moderately successful writer, I naively thought “women will find this interesting. This will make me more interesting to women.” (It is possible that I didn't actually truly believe this, but just pretended to believe it in a vain attempt to be positive).

Here is what happens in reality:

They ignore you, much in the same way that they would have ignored you anyway.
They're slightly surprised, but don't have anything of substance to say about it, nor do they ultimately give a shit.
They don't know what to say because they've barely ever read a book, and can't imagine how anyone can possibly write one. So it just makes them slightly uncomfortable, and they think their own career is shit by comparison. It doesn't make them feel good to be with someone smart, it makes them feel bad to be significantly less smart, which is not a sexy vibe at all.
One reaction I had was...don't you find it boring sitting writing all day? That was literally the first thing that she said to me. So I assume some find it boring. Imagine sitting there writing books all day, what a boring cunt.
They're intellectually intimidated almost immediately, and seek someone closer to their own intellectual level (see 3).
On the odd occasion, someone will take a genuine interest. But it doesn't in any way make you more attractive to them. And they're bookworms; they're usually too sensible to do anything impulsive anyway.

You can't even show off as you can with other skills, as you're just sat in a room on your own. The only time you would be able to show off would be if someone had read one of the books that you've written, which, of course, no-one ever has.

If anything it's a disadvantage. You don't have the opportunity to display your particular competence; you'd be better off being a moderately competent middle manager (as I was before). Then you'd be in a social setting.

All you have done by becoming a writer is develop a semi-obscure, solitary, impenetrable and incomprehensible skill that virtually no-one understands or finds in any way relatable (that sounds like an exaggeration, but it isn't).

Here I was thinking it would be like Californication. Not that I've watched that series, obviously.

On April 30th, it will be about 6 fucking weeks since good little boys and girls isolated themselves at home. If everyone did that, the virus would be dead.

Keeping my wild child dog entertained without dogparks or trails to walk on is definitely sufficient for staving off Corona boredom. He does like walking in the neighborhood to visit the horses down the street and I bought a cheap soccer ball to kick around the yard. He still does not get the concept of bringing the ball back to me for fetch. I might need to drag some junk out and do an obstacle course.

Long time lurker. Love reading up on this sub.

I’m a dentist and my friend is an engineer. He works in some type of early management role at a General Mills manufacturing plant. We’re both in our late twenties. Me 28, him 26. Everyone can agree that being a dentist is more prestigious than being an engineer. He makes about 100-110k and I made 260k last year. Yet when we’re out girls somehow find his job way more interesting than mine. Last time we were at the bar he had these two girls interested in how cereals are made and how he got to produce specially marketed Elsa cereals for the new Frozen movie. Boring stuff. Yet they ate it up and kept saying how he was smart etc...

He is a tall guy that looks exactly like what you’d picture a jock to look like, even though he’s one of the smartest people I know, and I’m an average looking guy. Now I understand that better looking guys get more attention, but girls are specifically surprised he’s an engineer and enjoy hearing him talk about work.

So I think pairing masculine appearances with traditionally boring jobs can make these jobs seem cooler. Thoughts?

Man working from home is great, but certain members of my team have dropped like 75% of their productivity.

It's really annoying because while we're a large & secure company, my Dept still has to churn out our projects or else revenue will grind to a halt, and some people on my team are treating this more like a vacation then just a weird WFH struggle.

Other than that the only annoying thing is the old guys who don't know how to put comments in PDFs or Word Docs and don't understand how revision control works. One MFer called me on the phone the other night and I had to listen to his fossilized ass for almost an hour taking notes on the things he wanted changed in a word document.

It's also a really fun time to fly into big Int'l airports and do touch & go in small airplanes.

Six men (40%) described a pattern of practice where social relationships with men were purely instrumental, primarily based around shared social or physical activities, with little sharing or discussion of personal issues. On the other hand, social relationships with women were more intimate and confiding. Men shared their personal lives, emotions, and personal difficulties with women. The life history data indicated that both these types of social relationships were beneficial for men’s mental health and well-being as they provided avenues for connection through shared activities with men and emotional support from women. This pattern will be introduced through the case of Ben, who made a clear distinction between his social relations with men and women:
I’ve got hunting mates, I’ve got mates I debate with, mates I go to the rugby with, I’ve got female friends that tell me about their male problems and I talk about my kids with, what’s going on in my life and in theirs. I had a mate the other day that got married and my wife said “I didn’t know he was engaged.” Neither did I, you know, we talk about all this other stuff.

Ritchie, another participant who exhibited this pattern, also differentiated his social relationship with men and women. Richie’s story further highlights some of the implications of this pattern for men’s mental health. Ritchie described his relationships with men as “the type of mates I would go for a night out on the town with” or “go for a run together,” whereas his relationships with women were based around personal disclosure, talking and listening. After his marriage ended, Ritchie did not stay silent; instead he attempted to mobilize support, messaging his friends on social media. Instead of being offered support, Richie found that the male friends he had considered “close” actually showed a “lack of concern” or support for his emotional well-being, or as he put it, they were “absolutely useless.” Ritchie had come up against the limitations of his own social networks and was left disappointed, hurt, and with few avenues for support.
Ritchie turned to his female work colleagues whom he described as “upfront and willing” to talk about their personal lives. Ritchie described how he valued the support he received from his female colleagues and how they were “reassuring in that emotional sense.” These supportive relationships with women were clearly beneficial for his mental well-being, because they offered him not only emotional support but also an avenue to confide the sense of shame he felt at being labeled a divorcee. Nonetheless, Ritchie still attempted to downplay the significance of these connections:
Going through a separation and just talking through all of those things was probably what I needed most during that time. Probably much more of a constructive conversation than it was an emotional need and it probably comes down to boys being boys don’t relate, I suppose, communicate at that emotional level—how I am feeling and how I am coping, blah, blah. It was more the constructive side of it that I needed.
It is interesting to note that Ritchie normalizes men’s lack of emotional supports as inherently masculine “boys being boys,” and overlooks the fact that he himself craved emotional connection and sought this out with women friends. Again, like Ben, this enabled Ritchie to maintain the public façade that men do not confide about their feelings within their social connections or need emotional support, while at the same time relying on women to achieve this.

Funny anecdote, when I was a child a come up with a plan to trick other (more retarded) kids by pretending that lightposts were sweet and delicious. I gather a couple of my friends and told them this.

They thought it would be hilarious. So at every opportunity we got in recess, we would talk about our plans to "give the lightposts a lick". Some kids came to ask if they could tag along (not knowing what the fuck we were talking about).

We made sure that the lightpost was covering our face, stick out our tongue and pretend to lick it. We talk about the different flavours that we were tasting.

We tricked like nine other kids, and the ones getting tricked later came again with another kid to play the same prank.
