Also - there is some middle ground here. If alleged rape victims come forward, we can believe them enough to offer counselling services and support without changing the legal system that requires proof. If they were raped, the counselling and support services will help them cope and readjust - which is something a conviction will be less effective at. If they weren't raped, they still need counselling because clearly they have a histrionics problem, which is something that a trained psychologist will be able to determine.

So believing a person does not necessarily mean convicting the person she blames. Those should be two distinct things.

-Still don't treat the rapist like a rapist without proof and allow due legal procedure without crucifying them in the court of public opinion?

How do we hurt anything by telling the victim that we're sorry and caring for them as if it is all true? I don't think treating them like it's true is necessarily synonymous with ostracizing and punishing the alleged rapist immediately.

This is so batshit insane. In just the most basic, fundamental, physical and empirical details, it is much more likely that someone is lying about a rape than that the rape actually happened if all you have is the statement. This is for the simple reason that it is many orders of magnitude easier, as well as less risky, to simply verbally state that someone raped you than it is to actually do any raping. How is this not obvious to people? I can falsely accuse millions of people of rape right now, with a few flicks of a keyboard, online to a community of thousands. I'd actually have to get up out of my chair to do any raping.

Actually, this is ok. She said you don't need proof to believe a rape victim. So, in other words, in order to decide we don't need proof to believe they were raped, we first need proof that they were raped in order to definitively determine that they are a rape victim.

Then again... I say "proof to believe they were raped", but the original comment doesn't actually specify that. Are they saying we should literally believe anything a rape victim says? What if two rape victims say contradictory things? Does the universe explode?

You know, the more I see this comment, the more I agree with it. We should believe rape victims, and you should not need to prove you were raped for people to believe that rape happened. If that's all they want - to be believed - that's fine.

It's when you infringe upon other people that you need proof. In looking for proof, one is indicating to the victim that they believe them enough to invest their own time and energy into their statement.

Edit for some clarity: I don't intend to say we should believe an accusation, only that a claim of rape (so long as it does not affect anybody else negatively) seems as though it should be believed for the sake of human decency and compassion. As soon as you add the caveat of an accusation, the claim requires substantiation and this statement no longer applies.
