Eating meat and the slaughter that is required for it is much more horrid than the injustice that is the absence of gender equality. Just think of how we treat the absolutely powerless animals we deem to be our food. Whatever rhetoric is used to stop it is in my mind justified even if it is not right; usually being persuasive is more important than being right.

No. Just no. This statement shouldn't apply to anything, no matter how unjust it may be.

The ends justify the means. If I can convince someone to stop atrocities by creating a rhetorical device that panders to their beliefs in a persuasive way then I will do that. This I will do with feminists, men's rights activists and anyone else with strong beliefs that can be used. I do not mind being a puppeteer and having you be a puppet if it can make the miserable conditions that exist on planet go away.
[–]cranefist10 11 points12 points13 points 14 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
I get your point of view, but I think that attempting to win people over with false arguments or even lies is a bad path to ever head down. If you are convincing people of something by manipulating the truth you aren't doing them any good.
Edit: that being said, I do actually agree with your stance on vegetarianism, but I don't think that anything but a logical and clear discussion about morality is the way forward for getting your point across.
[+][deleted] -14 points-13 points-12 points 14 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Perhaps it is a bad path to head down by some moral standard, but if it yields results then who cares about being righteous according to that standard? If telling this to feminists will convince them to stop eating meat then I am all for it.

What you've proven to everyone here is that no one should listen to you because you are willing to lie and make false claims to sway people. No. Fuck you. That attitude right there is what is wrong with the world. If you can't back up your opinion with evidence or rational argument, and are willing to listen to the counterarguments that people give you, and reconsider your views if those counterarguments are strong enough, then keep your fucking views to yourself.
If you have to resort to lies and deceit to make other people's opinions match your own, then your opinion is probably wrong and you are part of the problem.
[+][deleted] -10 points-9 points-8 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Not everyone are willing to look at any evidence or listen to any rational argument. What then?
So to stop rape, murder or war you would never tell a lie or use the beliefs of people against them?
I would use any means necessary.
[–]aaomalley 5 points6 points7 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The problem is that you don't have facts or reason on your side. It is purely your opinion that eating meat is this horrible atrocity, it certainly isn't fact. The problem is that you can't help yourself from anthropomorphising meat animals so you create a false equivalency between atrocities against humans and killing animals for food.
Your opinion isn't going so alter biological facts. Also your holding to the means justify the ends rhetorical standards is disgusting. Guess who else used the argument that the ends justify the means? Mengele certainly tried to defend himself by arguing the good provided by his experimentation was worth the means. It was also used by the perpetrators of the Tuskeegee experiments and EVERY other person justifying inhumane treatment for something they believe in. Congratulations, you have sided with the philosophy of Machiavelli. Read some of the work of Kamm or Nagal, or if you prefer your more historical sources Emmanuel Kant has some very persuasive arguments in regards to the superiority of Deontological ethics in comparison to that of the Consequentialists such as yourself. Consequentialism can only ever end with someone committing atrocities which they believe will do the most good. It makes me sick.
(A side note, though the Buddha was technically a consequentialist he was not a strict one in the lioness of Machiavelli. He would have also seen, and in fact argued in favor if, deontology as a favorable and honorable position.)
[–]Psy-Kosh 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
The problem is this: You go "my cause is so just that any means necessary to trick people to going along is okay", then the other guy does that too with their cause, etc etc etc, and ultimately no actual hope of rational discourse is possible on ANY subject, because everyone escalates their own pet cause to "so it's okay to lie about it."
Better to have the rule of "don't fundamentally argue dishonestly about an issue under debate, especially if you want, ultimately, for people to actually know the truth."
(If your explicit goal would be something like "cause people to believe false things", then those motives would perhaps alter the above strategy, but...)
Consider this: If you (or your "team") has a reputation of willingness to engage in deliberately deceptive argument, then your views are more likely to be ignored/disregarded.
There is instrumental utility in having a reputation for honesty. It boosts the chances that people will take what you say genuinely seriously.
Note, I'm saying this as someone who is vegetarian, and vegetarian for moral rather than health reasons. So don't think I'm dismissing your moral position re that.
But to be willfully deliberately misleading, well... why bother taking anyone like that seriously?
[+][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Because you will never know so that will never be an issue you will consider.
[–]GavnLogic 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
This is probably one of the most frightening things I've ever heard someone say. What makes it truly terrifying is the fact that you were being totally serious.
[+][deleted] -6 points-5 points-4 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
The thought of someone convincing someone else, by any means, to not do something terrible is truly the most frightening thing imaginable. If someone ever holds a gun against your head nobody should tell a lie to stop them from pulling the trigger, right?
[–]GavnLogic 5 points6 points7 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Emotional appeals and badly constructed hypothetical examples will not work on me. We are talking about the population, not just "someone else". I maintain my position:
The thought of convincing people, by any means, to not do something that you do not approve of is truly the most frightening thing I can imagine. Chiefly; who gets to decide what is acceptable and what is terrible? You? From this mindset spawns dictators.
If your idea has real merit and truth to it then it can stand on its own and convince others without the need to lie or embellish the truth.
[–]jnphoto 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
This type of behavior does far more harm to your cause than good. For every thousand people who fight justly for a cause, it just takes one that lies an manipulates to have the thousand lose credibility.
You have two groups of people A and B. Group A will only listen to something framed as an issue for them. Group B will listen to reason. What should you do to convince both groups of something that is entirely reasonable, but perhaps not something group A would see as an issue for them?
[–]jnphoto 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If you lie to group A, you will lose both A and B. stick to the truth you will keep B and create a space where A can find something if they want to.

Despite the occasional deviation, hunting has always been an exclusively male occupation.
[–]Quazz 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That's an outdated idea. The females would sort of hard the animals into position so they'd be more easy to kill.
The numbers of tribes were too small for only males to hunt, considering how ineffective those hunts usually turned out.

[–]GavnLogic 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Yes I'm aware of the common ancestor (Homo erectus) and the interbreeding that occurred. However, it seems you are drawing (or at least, suggesting) some erroneous conclusions:
Neanderthal females hunted, therefore Sapiens females hunted -- does not logically follow.
Neanderthals interbred with Sapiens, therefore Sapiens females hunted -- does not logically follow.
Neanderthals and Sapiens descended from a common ancestor - therefore, since Neanderthal females hunted, Sapiens females hunted -- does not logically follow.
[–]typhonblue 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
How about this:
Neanderthal females hunted, likely our common ancestor hunted too since there is evidence that Sapiens' food sharing is unique to us. Quite likely it's also a cultural adaptation so when we originally branched off from our common ancestor, females hunted. And then we developed the cultural adaptation to food sharing.
[–]Phrodo_00 -2 points-1 points0 points 14 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link
I don't really think so. Hunting in prehistoric times consisted of trying to kill an animal and then chase it to exaustion (apparently humans have a lot more stamina than faster animals) and then kill it... with tools. If women took care of children (which I think is a fairly good asumption, given the evidence), then they would be left a LONG distance away from them.
EDIT: I said pre-tool out of memory and it seems to be a sensible topic so I changed it.

Vegans are deficient in DHA which is essential for normal brain function. This is one reason they have such wacky ideas.
[–]loose-dendrite 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Vegans aren't necessarily deficient in DHA as there are vegan sources. Deficiency doesn't seem to be a serious concern either:
While there is little evidence of adverse health or cognitive effects due to DHA deficiency in adult vegetarians or vegans, fetal and breast milk levels remain a concern.
B12 and and iron (esp. for women) are more serious concerns.
This is one reason they have such wacky ideas.
I'm fairly certain that's because vegans rarely defaulted to veganism so they're questioning a lot of beliefs. Even right ones.

[+][deleted] -6 points-5 points-4 points 14 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Why wouldn't you believe that? It is a perfectly credible belief back by a lot of evidence.
The human brain is an extremely complex network of analogue processing units and nutrition can impair or enhance its functioning. Someone with a nutritional deficiency is likely to suffer notable cognitive impairments.
[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
To go from that to diagnosing a particular belief as a product of malnutrition is hackish in the extreme. Most vegans manage to avoid malnutrition anyway.

If you want to be pedantic dick, then sure, vegans don't exist and neither do vegetarians. If you accept that it's incredibly difficult to lead a vegan lifestyle because so much of our day to day life is out of our control and instead choose to define a vegan based on his or her ability to adhere to that lifestyle as best as they can, then they do exist.
But please, don't let that stop you from being smug.
[–]Roulette88888 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Well I don't accept that. Vegetarianism is perfectly possible, but Veganism is not. And if not. Why not? Vegans are the ones who should be making all the advances in Veganism, making it more accessible and such.
But no, you'll be Vegans as long as no real effort is involved. How admirable.
[–]mikemcg 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Vegetarianism is perfectly possible
But this picture! How do you explain that? If vegans can't be vegans because they finger painted, then why is it that vegetarians get to be vegetarians? Keep in mind that some people are diet vegetarians just like there are diet vegans, but there are also vegetarians who abstain from all animal products.
Vegans are the ones who should be making all the advances in Veganism, making it more accessible and such. But no, you'll be Vegans as long as no real effort is involved. How admirable.
Good lord is that a loaded statement. You've already made up your mind that vegans make no effort in being vegan. How do you know they don't? The vegans I know, who exceed the count of my fingers, all do their best to adhere to their diet and lifestyle. They've all either walked on linoleum, used photo film, or played a guitar, but they have no alternative choice. You'd have to be deluded to think that every vegan can have every item they ever come into contact with be hand made and certified vegan friendly. It's impossible. Still, they work as hard as they can to actively maintain the lifestyle in a decidedly vegan unfriendly world. For example, most vegans I know are aware that some alcohol isn't vegan friendly. A completely unintuitive thought, but it turns out that some manufacturers use animal byproduct as filters for the booze.
Anyways, I think you just want to be content with your holier-than-thou pedantry that vegans technically don't exist. Go for it, buddy.

Plant-based diet
Is not the same as a plant-exclusive diet
Conclusions drawn from Le Wiki
It doesn't say plant based diet. Largely plant based diet is not an exclusively plant based diet and 1/5 of the blue zones don't adhere to a largely plant based diet at all. Furthermore there are a total of 6 factors attributed to the cause of blue zones, making diet clearly not as important evident by the Sardinians. Way to misrepresent facts.

I don't think that's debatable in the slightest. Plants are crucial to our diets. You cannot survive just on meat. The reverse isn't true, you don't need to eat any meat at all to be perfectly healthy.

The Inuits did not only eat meat, they did have a largely meat derived diet, and they are an interesting group to study.
However, it is absolutely scientifically unquestioned that vegetarianism is a healthy diet. People arguing against vegetarian on the internet can be compared to creationists arguing against evolution. It's a bunch of uneducated dolts trying desperately to grab at any part of the sinking ship of their belief system.
Copy pasta from Wikipedia:
"In prospective studies of adults, compared to non-vegetarian eating patterns, vegetarian-style eating patterns have been associated with improved health outcomes—lower levels of obesity, a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, and lower total mortality. Several clinical trials have documented that vegetarian eating patterns lower blood pressure." - Written by the notoriously veg-friendly USDA, of course.

Thank you for your valuable scientific insight, please forward it to the thousands of professional nutritionists that have studied this. I'm sure they would be amazed by your incredible perception and the USDA would change its stance on the issue overnight.

If veggies are coming at me from a health angle I usually tend to agree with it as our society is advanced enough through supplements or other means that a healthy diet void of meat is plausible and when done correctly great for you. The problem I have is the moralistic argument, that by eating veggies you are minimizing the suffering of animal. My uncle is a trapper and makes a lot of money ripping the flesh off of beavers or other "pests" for orchards and farms. There is largely a don't ask don't tell policy when it comes to the life or death of the furry little things because if they want them relocated it is costly as he will first have to transport and second lose money off the pelt. We like our apples cheap so not really an option. There is no short edge of work and he has had to hire employees for his murder business. I have physically seen with my own eyes hundreds of pelts hanging in his shed, from that month. There are no bunny safe wheat harvesters. Combines suck up furry cute things all the time. Farms themselves do not occur naturally, they exist through the absolute rape and restructure of hundreds of creatures natural habitat. Point is the only real way to have a murder free meal is with your own garden (even then you need mantis' etc to destroy other living things for your food to be good)- that is not an option for most of us.

I know, it's unfortunate that there is a huge unavoidable cost of life. Being a vegetarian isn't perfect but it has a much lower cost of life than eating meat.

Not true at all. It's very possible to survive consisting on fish, sea-mammals, crustaceans, fowl and even just purely red meat.
you don't need to eat any meat at all to be perfectly healthy.
That's possible but less likely and more difficult. Despite the fact that some plants contain the same nutrients that are present in certain meats and fish, they do not have the same concentration. So unless you're micromanaging your diet and eating large amounts of certain plant matter, you'll still be comparatively worse off than an omnivore that eats a balanced amount of vegetables, meat and fish.

I'm a vegetarian and I have a degree in evolutionary biology, even. I know what I'm talking about! But when the topic of vegetarianism comes up, most people write these impassioned arguments based on preconceived notions that refuse to let them accept that maybe eating huge amounts of meat is not a good thing, and that we are not 'designed' to be carnivores.
[+]unfinite 14 points15 points16 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Did anyone say that eating huge amounts of meat was a good thing? No. Did anyone say they we're 'designed' to be carnivores? No. The person you replied to just pointed out a couple evolutionary traits we have for eating meat. That's it.
As you each pointed out, we have shorter digestive tracts than herbivores, but longer than carnivores. We have meat eating teeth, and we have plant eating teeth.
Humans are omnivorous. We're meant to eat a diet of both plants and meat. Diets of exclusively one or the other are not good for us. Both result in vitamin deficiencies; for example, plants don't contain vitamin B12, and most meat doesn't contain much vitamin C, especially when cooked.

Carnivore: an organism that derives its energy and nutrient requirements from a diet consisting mainly or exclusively of animal tissue.
Simply eating meat doesn't make you a carnivore. If you eat meat and plants, you're an omnivore - which we are. What started this comment chain was pointing out that we have characteristics for eating meat. Characteristics which herbivores do not have. Nobody said that we're carnivores.
Chimpanzee's, our closest cousins, have been known to eat their own babies. Don't tell me they are pure herbivores.

Bipedalism plays a major role in it, along with our binocular vision and our gigantic brains - you don't need a big brain to chew leaves all day, but you do need a big brain to learn how to track an animal and cooperate in groups.
[–]IHaveALargePenis 13 points14 points15 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Human brains consume so much energy, that we wouldn't be able to support them without either farming or eating meat. Since people haven't really been farming for that long, eating meat seems like an evolutionary trait. That and the fact that people have canines, which are made for chewing meat.
[–]ExistentialEnso 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
And it was a self-sustaining cycle. Evolution of those brains allowed us to communicate better as a group to hunt more effectively, since we lack the strength of a lot of other meat-eating species.

Eating vegetables acts as a mirror and representation of matriarchal values. Vegetable eating is the re-inscription of female power at every meal...if vegetables are a symbol of female dominance than [sic] the presence of vegetables proclaims the disempowering of men.

In fact, women need meat much more than men do, particularly since women are more prone to anemia. Many women (and plenty of men too) have less ability to synthesize retinol (the usable form of Vit A) from plant forms. Once childbearing comes into play, DHA, taurine, and carnitine, which are easier to get from animal products, are very important for infant development.
I'm Vegan, and this made my eyes roll.
[–]white_cloud10 points 14 years ago [recovered] (10 children) | Copy Link
You know, my initial reaction to this was one of uproarious laughter that anyone would be so deluded as to say things like "meat is a symbol of male dominance" and "meat eating is the re-inscription of male power at every meal". But then I did some research and found out that this is a real thing.
The author apparently believes that meat-eating is a part of maleness and vegetarianism is a part of femaleness. But is this really true? Have women throughout history eaten less meat than men? Do women as a gender have less of an appetite for meat than men do? In my experience, I have not found this to be true. I have found that women usually have the same or greater appetite for meat as men do.
What I think this author is doing is mistaking the fact that historically, it has been the men who had to procure meat for the family, either through hunting it or through raising and butchering it, and using this as evidence that meat-eating is a part of maleness.
She's ignoring the fact that the men brought home meat for the entire family, and that once the meat was brought home it was probably prepared with help from the women, because the women wanted meat for their meals just as much as the men did. Women were spared from the danger of having to go out and hunt for the meat, or the dirty work of butchering an animal. But that doesn't mean that women didn't like meat or didn't encourage the men to bring it home.
[–]thedevguy 10 points11 points12 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
What I think this author is doing is mistaking
No, that's not what the author is doing. What the author is doing is using the narrative toolkit of feminist theory to drive her own political agenda. What the author is doing is proving that there isn't actually any meat (please pardon the pun) in patriarchy theory. It's all just rhetorical treacle. If what feminists believe was actually true, then you wouldn't be able to use it, as this author does, to support complete nonsense. Rather, feminist authors have over the years built up this rich narrative toolkit consisting of pure thought-stuff. They've built it up to the point that it's now possible to apply it to absolutely anything.
The specific logical fallacy, if you're interested, is called a "just-so story" but basically, you can use the things that feminists say to argue any point that you'd like. I could use this author's language to argue that atheism is oppressive to women, or that religion is oppressive to women, or anything at all. It's easy.
[–]bikemaul 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
SO we can agree that, as systems, atheism and religion are both oppressive towards women? Am I doing this right?
[–]MissL 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes. And to some extent feminism is also oppressive towards women. Mostly the women who like being taken care of by a man and want to stay at home and raise the children. They're told that they shouldn't want those things because that's what men want and they're being oppressed. So they leave their babies in the care of strangers so they can go back to their full-time jobs that they as women deserve and need to fight for, and they're miserable. And it's all feminism's fault
[–]RyanLikesyoface 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Why are you trying to make logical sense of her argument? It's quite obvious that she hasn't given it any rational thought whatsoever. Just dismiss her as the idiot she is, it isn't a real thing. Any person in their right mind would glance at the argument and deem it ridiculous, even feminists have to laugh at this one.

Sure, battery farming is cruel, but the general farming and humane killing of animals is not.
[–]venereveritas -2 points-1 points0 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm not going to go into it, since this isn't r/vegan, but there is a huge difference between a pack of wolves hunting, killing, and consuming the entire meal versus Americans buying packages meat full of hormones, antibiotics and whatnot. It's not being involved and not caring about what you're eating that makes it cruel. Nature is indifferent when it comes to death, but factory farms are downright cruel to the animals, and worse to the people they feed.
And there aren't that many farms out there that humane. They're a dying breed.

Regardless of possible health benefits (which are debatable) I would argue that it's unethical since you don't need to eat meat to live and inflicting unnecessary suffering is wrong.
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 14 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link
Again, keep the animals well and kill them humanely.
I agree with the unnecessary suffering thing. I am a massive animal advocate... but I also believe in a food chain. You don't feed your dog a vegan/vegetarian diet unless you're a total asshat... but dogs don't need meat to survive (as evidenced by the amount of dogs that eat nothing but dry food.)
[–]Leichenschrei -2 points-1 points0 points 14 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link
I don't really think it's at all viable to treat animals humanely while society chooses to depend on meat and other animal products. At that scale it's all industrial or else it wouldn't be profitable. Even in my country where the animal protection laws are relatively strong there's massive animal suffering in these industries, so I have no reason to expect that to change. If you treat meat as a product to be mass produced - which it must be if everyone eats it regularly - , then animals will pay the cost.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 14 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
So, instead of lobbying for people who eat meat to only buy well-treated animals for labeling on food to be strict, for more stringent animal welfare laws and policing and for public education... you just say everyone should stop eating meat.
I have no reason to expect that to change
But you think turning humanity vegetarian is more feasible?
