Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a self described feminist: "[Ali] described herself as a "dissident of Islam"... [Ali] put forward the deeply contentious idea that Islam was simply incompatible with modernity and feminism.
[–]theozoph 4 points5 points6 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Religion is incompatible with modernity. Islam is just more so.
[–]ch4os1337 -2 points-1 points0 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]theozoph 7 points8 points9 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Not to heap abuse on Islam, but it reigns in pretty backward parts of the world, and therefore has recently taken on some of their less appealing characteristics : ignorance, violence and hardcore traditionalism.
Now if we were talking about Islam & Christianity during the Crusades, I would definitely have given Christianity the lower mark.

[–]douglasmacarthur 31 points32 points33 points 14 years ago* (72 children) | Copy Link
The way I see it is, there are "good feminists" but there isn't a "good feminism." A minority of self-described feminists aren't sexist and are just using the term naively because they're concerned about discrimination against women, but they're making a mistake by calling themselves a feminist. There's no objective reason to call yourself a feminist if you're not sexist, given the terms etymology and history.
Edit: So, I started making entirely civil counter-arguments on the SRS thread, for which the scholars over there decided to ban me. If anyone from SRS would like to criticize my post with a direct, intellectually honest reply instead of sarcastic quips on a forum that bans people that disagree with its views, I'd be happy to discuss it here.

Okay, I'm trying to understand where you're coming from here...Do you not think that Men's Rights are also sexist then, using the same logic? Should people who don't want to be sexist either way then use "Egalitarian" or something like that?

There may have been a time when atheists were persecuted, but that time is not now. I have a broad range of friends and acquaintances: conservatives, liberals, mras, feminists, people of all ethnicities. Most are atheists or religious people who simply don't give a fuck, and all others at the least tolerate atheism.

As a third generation atheist, I can say that I have never, ever, been persecuted for my beliefs. Maybe there are worse places in the country to live, but I have never felt like my words were being devalued, never felt worried about voicing my opinion, and never felt in danger for my beliefs.
[–]LogicalWhiteKnight 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
What are you talking about? I do not know of any women or atheists who are denied from going on planes due to their names. Are you referring to the no-fly lists which often cause people with Islamic names to be kept off planes because they might match someone on the watch list? That is unfortunate, and I am against racial profiling, but it doesn't change the fact that atheists are more persecuted in this country than women. Muslims are clearly more persecuted than either, and I do fight to oppose that persecution and discrimination.

[+]Youre_So_Pathetic -8 points-7 points-6 points 14 years ago (33 children) | Copy Link
No, I think you MRAs project awfulness on feminism that simply isn't there or is in the fringe. Nothing is wrong with feminism, on the whole feminism is a positive philosophy and as a movement has made positive changes to society.
I think you've set up a straw man feminism as an enemy to hate and blame for when things go wrong, and many MRAs use "feminism" as a code word for "women" so they can say misogynistic shit without ever getting called on it.
It is contrary to say that there are "good" people in a philosophy you find as thoroughly repugnant and evil as feminism is depicted in this subreddit. It's like saying "well, he was a concentration camp guard, a member of the Nazi party and an SS officer, but he was a good person! You see Nazism is a bad philosophy, but there are good Nazis!"
"Feminism" is dog whistle politics for you guys.

I'm sure you honestly believe this but that doesn't make it remotely accurate. Putting words in the collective mouth of a group whose views, while logical and internally consistent, make you personally uncomfortable so that you can subsequently dismiss the group as a whole is a very juvenile way to address your personal shortcomings.
Make sound arguments, post links, or otherwise make your case by all means, but don't fling insipid straw men about and expect to get any traction.
[–]Youre_So_Pathetic -2 points-1 points0 points 14 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Holy fuck. You just described the men's rights movement to a T without any trace of irony whatsoever.
Please, define feminism for me. Do it in such a way that makes your definition supportable by what feminists (mainstream, not fringe) themselves have said. Feel free to quote women liberally while doing so, otherwise you'll be "putting words in the collective mouth" of women and feminists.
Please, do this when you define feminism for me, because this is the very opposite of what your friend here did, thus proving my point.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Given there's plenty of legislation, advocated and in some cases drafted by avowed feminists, aimed at curtailing the rights of men as a gender (if you can't find this on your own you're not looking and demonstrably guilty of exactly what I just described) you're pretty deep in denial if you honestly think feminism isn't doing exactly what it's being accused of. Feel free to describe those feminists as "fringe" so you can continue to cling to your delusions, but as long as they're the ones affecting social change, however repugnant, they're the mainstream. Deal with it.

[–]douglasmacarthur 8 points9 points10 points 14 years ago* (21 children) | Copy Link
Oh, you're arguing from the opposite side I thought you were.
Your first two paragraphs are just narrations of what you think our motivations for being wrong are with no evidence given that we're wrong in the first place, so I'm not certain much can be said about them.
Some of the "awfulnesses" of feminism...
it's so ill-defined it can be defended on one set of terms and applied with a completely different set, and any "feminist" can deny responsibility for its consequences by using whichever interpretation is convenient in whatever context
it's rooted in Marxism and presents a materialist-collectivist model of society in which groups, not individual minds, are the unit of consideration and the standard of value
it describes the problems of the sexes as fundamentally distinct (with the womens' being more important), creating a divisive, zero-sum contextualization of gender issues
it dehumanizes men and represses awareness of sexism against men by denying the significance, or existence, of sexism against us - training people not to notice it and making it much harder to fight
it enables mysogony by defending the rights of women so incompetently and in a way that is so easy to deride and disregard, making it easier to deride and disregard the actual rights of women; to incompetently defend something can be as bad for it as attacking it
Feminism, unfortunately, has had a large impact on our culture. Two broad categories of awful consequence are the way our legal and educational systems discriminate against men and the way men are dehumanized by our culture.
I didn't benefit from growing up in a society where professional writers can make light of male rape, hostage-taking, and violent castration incidents without harming their careers in the slightest, having multiple grade school teachers matter-of-factly tell my class that males are the inferior sex, seeing males on television consistently portrayed as mindless sex-crazed buffoons that need women to take care of them, etc. etc.
Of course women suffer from unique forms of sexism as well. But it's not a zero-sum game. Feminism, by presenting a fundamentally collectivist-sexist worldview, hurts us all.
many MRAs use "feminism" as a code word for "women" so they can say misogynistic shit without ever getting called on it.
I think this is true, with the possible exception of the "many" part. Similarly, many feminists use "mysogony" or "sexism" as a code word for "men" so they can say misandrist shit without getting called on it.
Unfortunately, people upset about being the victims of discrimination often respond by doing the inverse discrimination. Stopping that cycle is one of the key things that needs to stop if sexism is going to end, which is part of the reason I make a point to call out misogyny with the same urgency that I call out misandry.
It is contrary to say that there are "good" people in a philosophy you find as thoroughly repugnant and evil as feminism is depicted in this subreddit.
Feminism isn't a singular coherent philosophy. One of the primary dangers of feminism is that it's a package deal of "generic defender of women's rights" and many other terrible premises. Someone not exposed to those other terrible premises or who sees them as "fringe" can naively believe they're fighting sexism by using the term. But using the term is necessarily enabling sexism.
I'm also not positive I find feminism "as thoroughly repugnant and evil as [it's] depicted in this subreddit."
It's like saying "well, he was a concentration camp guard, a member of the Nazi party and an SS officer, but he was a good person! You see Nazism is a bad philosophy, but there are good Nazis!"
No, because Nazism had an official body (the party) taking specific actions and was a far, far more exact philosophy in the first place, so there was a much more definite idea of what it means to be a Nazi.
I've never heard that idiom before.
[–]jmnzz 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Patriarchy is the word they use as a smokescreen for men more than anything else.
They changed the very definition of the world just to conflate it with one of their male demonizing theories (men are privileged/oppressors).
[–]Youre_So_Pathetic -3 points-2 points-1 points 14 years ago* (19 children) | Copy Link
Care to provide evidence that what you think feminism is is actually what it is?
In other words, are you actually attempting to define something you know shit-all about?
Similarly, many feminists use "mysogony" or "sexism" as a code word for "men" so they can say misandrist shit without getting called on it.
Well, except the part where this makes no sense since "misogyny" and "sexism" are actions or behaviours, not groups of people.
Feminism isn't a singular coherent philosophy.
Then how were you able to define it as "based on Marxism" above? It shouldn't be based on anything if it isn't even a "coherent philosophy."
Holy shit, your post is pretty much insane. Contradictory, filled with assertions of thing you are defining for yourself, this is exactly what I was talking about.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
no, a lot of his post is clear and makes sense. I can see your point on the contradiction between saying it's based on marxism (my understanding of feminism and marxism isn't at a level to dispute this claim on it's own) when it isn't a singular philosophy, but just because it's incoherent doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't have something in common with/it's ideas are based on another philosophy

MRAs use "feminism" as a code word for "women"
feminists don't even have a 'code-word' for men, they just say men are evil.

[–]ExpendableOne -5 points-4 points-3 points 14 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Even then, you will often find that most "good feminists" are actually still quite in denial as to how harmful, inherently biased and historically sexist feminism actually is/has been; and still support a lot of the bad that they don't see, aren't aware of or purposely keeping a blind eye to. Generally speaking, even the most benevolent of female privilege deniers make it difficult to approach male gender issues when they either insist that there is no issue to begin with(which is generally because they aren't affected/subjected to it directly) or maintain a position that is clearly affected by feminism. You will also find a lot of cases where some "good feminists" adopt a position of equality(or at least, near equality), and use themselves as a basis for all women or feminists, and then go on to perpetuate the idea that there is no issue to begin with; even though they are in a definite minority.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

but it's useful to point out the difference between WRAs and feminists
This isn't a difference that exists outside of attempts to explain away agreeing with a feminist without compromising the idea that feminism is the devil.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Part of fighting an idea is knowing what to fight, and being able to communicate that to others clearly and succinctly.
There isn't a whole lot of clarity in taking a term that two people use to identify their views, claiming it only applies to one of them, and making up a new term for the other one.
There are distinctions that can be drawn within feminism to distinguish the particular varieties both of the women in the picture subscribe to, but none of them are going to really take you outside of feminism, and I don't think you're going to find some bright line that will conclusively separate the feminists you agree with from the feminists you don't.

I am both a MRA and a WRA at once, I do not believe in the abuse of either sex - I find however the "feminists" are the ones who blatantly cause more problems for the sexes than ANY other group, the worst part about it, the "good" feminists do not kick the idiots into line, hence the term is sullied by total morons - Ayaan is amazing, very strong lady and knows what she is fighting for, rather than "wahhh, porn is bad, BAD PORN BAD, ALL MEN ARE RAPISTS" - she's actually going after serious issues like the mutilation of genitals both of MALE and FEMALE children, she is fighting in areas which are so far in the basket case they need people like her to try and get some logic into the minds of people. Good on her, upvotes for amazing WRAs.

To paraphrase another commenter elsewhere in this discussion: Did you just make the argument that, since worse things are happening somewhere else, we have no right to try to fix things closer to home? By that argument, you shouldn't complain about feminists, since elsewhere male children are being forced into being soldiers while their mothers and sisters are raped and killed. It's nonsense.
I looked up Rebecca Watson and found what you were referring to. I found her complaint reasonable. She didn't like being propositioned - not in general but: 1) when alone in an elevator in a hotel in a foreign country 2) by a stranger that she had never spoken with before 3) at 4 in the morning. 4) Especially since she had just stood on a stage and said "Please don't hit on me. I'm not interested."
I'm a 5'11, 230 pound white male who has never been really afraid, but even I can see that this was not appropriate. And that's all she said: "It's not appropriate. It's kind of creepy." She didn't call for his head. She didn't say he should be arrested. She just asked for a little more discretion.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
No, she didn't talk about being hit on, she made a few nonspecific and unscripted remarks about how women face "blatant misogyny" wherever they go and then proceeded to creep-shame a guy who asked her out after she had spent all night hanging out in the lobby bar "with the guys". Wait--getting asked up for a nightcap... at a bar... in the same hotel where your entire conference is? MISOGYNY! Discretion is what the guy did--didn't try to pick her up in full view of everyone, but asked her casually as the two of them went to their respective rooms if she would like to discuss her opinions more over coffee. The guy did not harass her, did not corner her, did not assault her, did not even offend her; he just asked. When even asking is not allowed, you know there's a problem.
[–]NotYouPal 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
She'd never met the guy before. He'd just heard her announce to the group and the world she didn't want to be hit on. And then he hit on her.
Lets remove all the menace of a stranger male cornering a female in an elevator, and just say she said in the panel and then in the bar discussion:
"I really don't like when people offer me coffee. I have this nightmare where people follow me around and try to make me drink coffee they've peed in."
And then someone follows her into an elevator and offers her coffee and she politely declines and later says "Hey everyone, please don't do that."
Do you get it now? If I announce "Please don't hit on me, I don't like it." then it is not polite to hit on me.
Or maybe flip the genders. Say you work at a weird government lab where there are a bunch of female gymnasts that are 8 feet tall, hairy, aggressive and strong. You announce to all of them that you are not interested in sex with any of them after a few ask you.
Then one of them follows you into an elevator right after that announcement and asks you the same thing this dude asked her.
Can you see why she might be annoyed?
[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points-2 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I can see why anyone might be annoyed--why that person might feel the need to call ridiculous amounts of attention to themselves and shame said-asker publicly in a forum where he cannot respond (juvenile youtube video) I cannot abide. People stop doing this sort of shaming gossip maneuver in middle school; it's tacky and it brings the entire "feminist" movement into question if being asked for coffee in an elevator is what passes for "misogyny" in the minds of these fools.

Can't women just be women? I just discovered r/SRS and I was totally ready to laugh at it -thinking, reddit is stupidly liberal- no problems there. But now I'm seeing r/beatingwomen, and half of r/funny. Reddit it makes a lot of generalizations about women being stupid, or crazy or slutty. It makes me really sad to have made this discovery. This post is also calling women slutty- further down the chain there are posts saying that she is trying to hide her chin fat or trying to look more attractive. Really, who gives a shit? She is a girl. So is the other chick. People are women and men- why can't people get over that and stop bashing one or the other because of their sex? Sure- some women jokes are humorous (like sammich jokes)- in the same way that advice animals bachelor frog was humorous. But shit like there where you just criticize someone for wanting to look their best. And here I thought reddit was a community.

Even if it doesn't show cleavage, the chin-down method of picture taking makes women appear more attractive to the opposite sex (who would normally be taller than her), and the chin-up method works best for men to attract women (who would normally be shorter than him).
Okcupid did a bunch of research on it.

Makes them look coy, too.
For men hoping to attract women, they're actually supposed to not smile, to look away from the camera, and seem interested in whatever's off-camera, rather than the person looking at the picture. Which says some interesting things, I think.

[–]girlwriteswhat -1 points0 points1 point 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
That women are more attracted to men who seem aloof and disinterested in them (at least in the beginning). It indicates he's high status if he doesn't have to care about "landing" her because there are other options off camera.
I think that implies too much thinking--which, granted, may be going on in some minds. But evolutionarily, staring is an aggressive posture. Stare at your dog, and he'll start growling. Stare at a chimp, and he'll start running around wildly. Eye contact is prized nowadays in pictures of women because we're a very pictorial society; but a hundred years ago, women who stared at other women or other men were giving them "the evil eye." We just get the wiggins from too much eye contact, I think.

One of the top comments on the castration one...
if you've never been abused or in a violent situation then you have no more right to comment than the woman who posted this. Having been in an abusive relationship for over 6 years, I completely understand why the woman in this story would do what she did. I myself couldn't have done anything nearly that gruesome, but I can imagine how she could. If you don't know what it's like to be beat, lied to, cheated on, and just plain degraded on a daily basis you probably can't fathom how a woman could have this much pain and hate to do such a thing to someone.
I like how, "lied to, cheated on, and just plain degraded" are among the reasons castration might be justified. He said something degrading, time to mutilate him. Completely disgusting.
[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Psychological mistreatment can do terrible things. It doesn't justify, but it can be a cause of extreme behavior.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
You deliberately skipped the "beat on" part because it damages your argument. One wonders why you didn't edit it out of the quote.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Giving the benefit of the doubt, he may have skipped it because it was the only criteria in the list that even resembles a valid argument for violent response. However, I don't think it "damages his argument" either. When does any kind of violence justify genital mutilation, or an attack on someone who is sleeping?
I can kinda see someone killing an abuser when they're vulnerable, under very limited circumstances, but mutilating? Seriously?
no, it doesn't. I agree, and I disagree with Nicole wasserface lauding it. I only disagree with his tone in discussing the case itself.
[–]douglasmacarthur 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I didn't edit it out of the quote because I had no reason to and because I'm not an intellectual fraud.
I skipped it because it doesn't contribute to my argument, but neither does it damage it. I said those three are "among the reasons."
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Weng abused drugs, had no job and often demanded money from her, resorting to violence if she refused, Pan told police.
I do not commend what she did in any way, but it is wrong to paint him an innocent victim here. Pan lives in a culture that gives little legal or social recourse to abused women.
[–]douglasmacarthur 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Assuming her description of the situation is accurate, which it most likely is, then obviously he was a pretty bad guy. But doing very bad things doesn't make you "guilty," as though that justified the crime.
I don't know about Vietnam, but the commenter presumably was Western, and while abusive relationships are terrible, an adult in an abusive relationship here isn't in the state of total desperation that might justify a horrible act of violence like that.
Additionally, the inclusion of "lied to, cheated on, and degraded" is truly disturbing to me. As though the way she feels, regardless of why, or whether he initiated force, or any conception of principle or rights, justifies terrible violence.
What are you arguing?

It is a bit refreshing that you guys decided to point out the difference between women's rights activists and feminists. It makes me happy to know that not all of you brand all females who fight for equality should be branded as something detrimental to a fair and balanced society (feminist).
It's an argument from those who are trying to discredit and/or marginalize us. The vast majority of us do not hate women nor do we want to deny women any sort of equality. All that most, if not all of us want is to see men get a fair shake.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali is one of the most famous feminists of our time. She readily identifies herself as such. You don't really think you can praise her while divorcing her from the movement she so strongly identifies with, do you?
Oh, of course you do. Because if you can't simply ignore all the good, admirable feminists out there, you can at least rewrite their bios and remove every mention of the world feminist or feminism to keep with this narrative that all feminists are bad and have no legitimate cause.
[–]Aerowynn 9 points10 points11 points 14 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
I am a woman who hates feminists. This more or less sums up why (though I'm not sure about Watson as an example, but only because I'm unfamiliar with her work).
I have no issue with women's rights activists - the true ones. It's a fact of the world that there are still a number of cultures that treat women as second class citizens, and it's one thing to campaign for equality (more power to you!), but it's another entirely to expect superior treatment. Most self-proclaimed feminists are actually misandrists. They claim that it's so hard being a woman, constantly being objectified or approached inappropriately. This is not a solely female experience! I have personally witnessed creepy middle aged women making lewd propositions at unwilling younger guys on numerous occasions, but you don't see guys running around crying about how 'all older women want me for is my cock'! Unwarranted advances are a two way street.
I just wish some 'feminists' realized that blaming all men for the inappropriate behavior of some makes them just as baselessly biased as the men they protest about.
[–]theozoph 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Glad to see that the ranks of our women MRAs are filling up. And yes, you can be an WRA without being a feminist. A lot of Third World countries are just entering the modern age, and are still stuck in a traditionalist social framework, where men are beasts of labor (and soldiers), and women childbearers and wives.
The role of the WRA is to usher their society into the modern age, where sexes aren't solely defined by their familial role (provider and nurturer). And they'll find plenty of young men willing to help them achieve that.
Let's hope that they'll have more good sense than their Western counterparts, and won't blindly charge ahead into a gender war once equal rights have been achieved.

Instead of launching into a personal attack like theozoph, I'll actually explain what a special snowflake is.
A special snowflake is a member of a minority group who parrots an opinion held by the majority for easy points.
Example:
Majority: "Why do black people talk during movies? It's so annoying! (+33)"
Special Snowflake: "I'm black and I think black people who talk during movies are rude and uncouth. " (+133)
Oh, well that makes more sense... What a twit! Thank you for explaining.

So a woman's rights activist is a feminist who gets respect.
Which means, a feminist for a society that isn't ours - because people trying to change society are rarely well-received until after they have succeeded.

WTF are you talking about? Can you explain?
[–]Gareth321 20 points21 points22 points 14 years ago* (18 children) | Copy Link
I'm not Scott, but just off hand:
They have one of the largest feminist parties in the world, which introduces rather sexist legislation under coalition and social pressure.
Said party managed to have legislation pushed through which criminalizes buying sex, but not selling it. Statistically, this effectively criminalizes men paying for prostitutes, but not the women prostitutes themselves. Extremely discriminatory.
They had progressive integration legislation which was regularly enforced which forced universities to admit women who weren't as qualified as men (a quota system). As soon as that quota system started benefiting men, said party above had the legislation amended and essentially neutered.
In their criminal code, they include an extremely vague definition of what constitutes criminal conduct under the sections under sexual assault and rape. Deception, at any point in time during a sexual encounter, is illegal. This same law is being used against Julian Assange. There's little precedent surrounding it either, so, taken to its logical conclusion, a state prosecutor could literally charge a pregnant woman under this section because she failed to have a prior-agreed-upon abortion should she fall pregnant. Of course, state prosecutors are even more biased in Sweden than in the US, and would never apply such a law to women, only men. In effect, a woman can have any man charged under this code after a sexual encounter for anything up to an including misunderstanding what brand of watch he was wearing. You can thank said party above for giving the police more "latitude" with this one.
[–]EvolutionTheory 4 points5 points6 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Thank you for the detailed information, I was unaware of most you've written, though I generally understood issues related to the leading feminist movement and they way it seems to have affected Swedish society.
So would these issues serve to not only remove Sweden as an ideal place to live, but lower it to the worst option compared with other Western cultures? Do you have an opinion on an ideal Western country?
[–]Gareth321 9 points10 points11 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
There are many aspects of Swedish culture which are desirable. On balance, it may still be a great country to live in. I was just expanding on Scott's blunt statement about Sweden. My views differ somewhat from the libertarian-leaning MRAs, but I believe that a successful society must create social safety nets for the vulnerable. I believe that those safety nets must be means tested, not sex tested. By that I mean that I disagree with any law which discriminates. I don't make the distinction between "positive" (progressive) discrimination and negative discrimination. For me, on balance, Sweden is still one of the better Western countries to live in. If Feministiskt initiativ gains more traction, and manages to create even more inequality, then that will change.

Don't bring assange into this. One of his victims woke up to find him penetrating her without a condom on, which she had expressly forbidden for obvious and good reasons. The other told him to put a condom on, he pretended he had and penetrated her and then physically restrained her till she stopped struggling because she was smaller than him and afraid. He has never denied their account of what happened. That would be considered rape an any reasonable country. Certainly you would consider it rape if a woman did this to a man in order to get pregnant.
[–]Gareth321 4 points5 points6 points 14 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link
which she had expressly forbidden for obvious and good reasons
Did she? Or did she regret her decision the next morning? Or was there an "implied" wish for a condom? Or did it fall off mid-coitus? Or was it the wrong brand? Ditto for the second account. It all seems extremely convenient, considering the timing and Sweden's cozy extradition laws.
Never-the-less, we don't have evidence either way. If those women can provide evidence that he intentionally removed it mid-coitus despite her wishes, and/or didn't use one at all despite her wishes, then that's against the Swedish criminal code. Until then, we have this idea that people should be innocent until proven guilty.
As for your last statement, if he is found to have done what he's accused of, I wouldn't consider it rape. I would consider it deceit. I only consider acts rape where one partner is forced to continue. Similarly, when a woman intentionally skips her birth control and becomes pregnant, I don't consider that rape, just deceit. There should be laws against deceit, depending on the consequences and the circumstances. But they are not comparable to forcefully subduing someone.
He has never denied their account of what happened.
I've never heard you deny you raped and murdered a girl in 1990. I guess you did it.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 14 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
He has addressed their accusations and denied one girls version of how things started, but made no denial of the pertinent sexual acts. His defense is that since both women consented to have sex with him initially everything that happened afterwards was consensual. And he did use force, one was restrained when she tried to reach for the condoms herself and he pinned her down till she stopped struggling. And I don't know about you but if I took a partner to bed on the strict instruction they use a condom and then WOKE UP to find them on top of me, condom less, I would consider it a fairly massive violation. By which I mean rape, just so we're clear. Listen, I'm not saying that because assange is a shit all mrn are shit, but you are defending a man who doesn't deserve it because you share similar looking external genetalia. You are hitching your wagon to the wrong horse.
[–]theozoph 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Look at the timeline, and you'll find that neither women's version of the event is very believable. One was seen holding hands with him the next day as she brought him back to the train station, the other threw him a party the night after the alleged condom incident. Not exactly the actions of women dealing with a rapist.
The rape reports came a week later, after they found out about each other. At first, the second woman was only concerned about forcing Assange to undergo a STD test. The rape allegations came only after talking to the police, and were rejected by the prosecutor in the first instance.
I'll add that the first women is also a feminist who, that same year, had written an article about how to get revenge against men who have slighted you.
Do your homework, the whole thing sounds as fishy as the North Atlantic. Assange might be a narcissistic douchebag and a pig with women, but I really doubt these women had anything to object to, until they found out just how little they mattered to him.
[–]Gareth321 -1 points0 points1 point 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
but made no denial of the pertinent sexual acts.
One doesn't need to deny anything in order to be presumed innocent. In fact, most lawyers recommend not saying anything to the media, as it can alert the prosecutor to defense strategy. Your adamant wish for a denial is seriously troubling. You should dust up on common law a little, and why society presumes people are innocent.
And he did use force
Really? How on earth did you uncover this proof? Where's your source?
I would consider it a fairly massive violation
As might I. Having sex with someone while they're asleep is always a tricky legal question. I mean, technically, my girlfriend has raped me repeatedly. But I think it would be silly to have her prosecuted just because I couldn't explicitly consent at the time. This is compounded by the additional level of consent for the condom. But since we don't actually know how events proceeded (or, at least, I don't - I'm still waiting on that evidence of yours), this is all wild speculation.
Fine, then the courts may decide and we shall see as details unfold. However, I think there are worthier candidates for your protection; from where I'm standing his current response to their testimonies sounds like a tacit admission they are telling the truth, but that he denies just what that means.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
All the points everyone else had made here are good. Sweden also is implementing gender police in primary schools to make sure gender pronouns aren't used. Instead of he or she they are using the Finnish word "Han" which is a gender neutral word for "friend" as the Swedish words for friend are gender specific. Sweden wants to raise gender neutral kids. Quite the social experiment that may come to bite them later when these poor children hit puberty.
From what I've heard, this is restricted to a few privately-run schools, and not official policy.

You're all equal here: Swedish school bans 'him' and 'her' in bid to stop children falling into gender stereotypes
No 'him' or 'her'; preschool fights gender bias

Do you have kids? Running around with fake swords is part of pretend time, using an imagination. Shutting that down is harmful. To punish the behaviour because mostly males emulate it is unnecessary.
As for pretending that boys and girls don't have different interests and abilities is also kind of weird. There really are biological differences which lead to children's interests differing. I'm really not sure what the end goal is and what they're trying to accomplish by telling children this. At some point they'll grow up and realize that there are biological differences in many aspects of life, and they'll feel pretty hurt, confused and that they've been lied to for quite some time.

What is your problem with that? And I wouldn't worry about puberty, Scandinavian sex education is the best in the world.
Yeah... it looks like it's really helping the youth.
SCUM: Having Fun
when will you learn that finding stupid online "evidence" of fringe feminism and adding a sincere VoiceOver spouting conjured statistics does not constitute evidence of widespread social dysfunction? I mean, seriously? If I wanted to, there are many vids by men propagating hatred of and violence towards women. Do I use that to extrapolate onto all of you? No. Because I'm not a moron.
Oh hey, in that vein! R/beatingwomen exists, ergo the men's rights organisation is in favour of violence towards women, ergo they are trying to emasculate us and deprive us of our rights, ergo they are evil and should be revealed for the society destroying monsters that they are!?!

I'm glad this was posted. I often felt that people (usually fellow women) tend to put both in the same category, but seeing all these positive remarks about the difference puts a smile on my face.

You guys realize that "feminism" and women's rights" are synonymous, right? You can't just invent false distinctions and expect them to make sense in the real world.
Oh right . . . that's exactly what you do.
[–]matt_512 9 points10 points11 points 14 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
You're equating an exceptionally vague, circumstantial term with a specific movement. You can't just invent false equivalences.
[+]againstmensrights -14 points-13 points-12 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
It's hardly an invention to equate feminism and women's rights.
You MRAs have lemminged yourselves so far off the logic cliff you're not even debatable anymore. Fucking sad. You used to be fun.

You do realize there are multiple "waves" of feminism right? This is addressing how 1st and 2nd wave feminism would be more of a woman's rights activist, and a 3rd wave feminist is the one portrayed in the picture. It makes perfect sense if you aren't a complete moron able to make connections. If you want me to group all feminists together, then I'm also going to associate every feminist with the man haters like the SCUM advocates, and the women in the private room of radfemhub. Idk if you're trying to troll us or not, but to make sure, I will respond as if you aren't.

yes

evidence?
It makes perfect sense if you aren't a complete moron able to make connections.
so you're trolling?
If you want me to group all feminists together, then I'm also going to associate every feminist with the man haters like the SCUM advocates, and the women in the private room of radfemhub. Idk if you're trying to troll us or not, but to make sure, I will respond as if you aren't.
SCUM manifesto was the ultimate feminist troll. How can't you get that?
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
So if I made a giant hate speech about killing black, and got it nationally know, but then just called it fucking around, that's ok? And whether it actually was trolling or not, this wasn't: http://www.avoiceformen.com/feminism/radfem-hub-the-underbelly-of-a-hate-movement/ Those are high ranking feminists/people with "high" positions in society.
Also, you can't provide "evidence" for the waves of feminism comment, it is just inferred by the current actions of those of that group.
[–]XFDRaven 13 points14 points15 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I don't think so. I would personally support the gal on the left side as she's not using an unfounded canard of all women are victims, and addresses the problems specifically. In addition she's acting as an egalitarian on male issues as well. You will not find a feminist who is her equal.
To be a straw-person argument, the person on the right must have some token tag-line, often taken out of context, and misconstrued to falsely misrepresent her position. If there were a fallacy here, it would probably be an ad-hom to the person on the right.
[–]fondueguy 6 points7 points8 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I tend to see the poster as more of a "no true scotsman".
There is a difference between those individuals but I don't really see two different movements. Feminism and women's rights are one in the same in publication perception and the political.
Of course some true women's rights advocates, that also stand for human rights, have been totally outer by the women's groups.

[–]hopeless_case 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
In addition she's acting as an egalitarian on male issues as well.
In particular, as an outspoken opponent of FGM who edured it herself, she considers MGM to be as bad if not worse. Now that's integrity.
You will not find a feminist who is her equal.
There are a precious few. I consider Nawal El Sadaawi her equal. Also endured FGM, and considers MGM just as bad. And goes out of her way to say that when FGM is discussed.
Also has been to prison for being outspoken.
Isn't it interesting that western feminists are so quick to distinguish MGM and FGM, while these 2 African activists who have suffered FGM themselves, and have risked their lives fighting against it, don't?
[–]arstin -1 points0 points1 point 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I agree that it's an important distinction, but if those are the names you are going to go with, then a good chuck of what goes on here needs to move to r/Masculinism. Would be a great thing for both communities.
