back in 1999-2000, i decided not to do "spring exercises" That was our word for graduation at my high school, because it happened in like April or May. It was bullshit.

The actual ceremony involved the boys and girls lining up alphabetically on either side of a stage. A boy would walk up and take a rose, a girl would walk up, he'd give it to her, they'd walk down the middle together. It was really fucked-up forced-romantic garbage, and given that the whole school had basically spent 4 years making it known in no uncertain terms that as a nerd I wasn't allowed to associate with girls, I had no interest in participating.

One day, after I'd skipped a couple meetings and rehearsals, some mid-tier popular girl walked up to me.

Her: "Hey. Do you know [girl's name]?"

Me: "No."

Her: "Well she's mad at you. She was supposed to walk down the aisle with you." (yes this is really what it was called)

Me: "Um... okay. That's nice."

I'd be lying if I didn't say that I felt pretty great about that for a month. It was the first time I'd been expected to do something romance-based and been able to straight-up refuse because it was stupid. To look an entitled girl in the eyes and say "I don't care." After an entire adolescence of girls literally using sexuality as a weapon to hurt me, it was intoxicating to finally have a little power over the situation.

No regrets.

Years later, the 10 year reunion rolled around. I ignored a group invite on facebook. Someone went after my wife saying "you need to make him go!"

Her response was "if you think it's a good idea, or even possible, to 'make' him go back there, then you definitely didn't know him."

I guess this isn't terribly related to the post but it reminded me of the story and it makes me smile.

I feel like this really leaves a bad rep for girls who are oblivious and not really playing games. Perhaps I'm wrong.

I'm quite the oblivious girl when it comes to attraction and naturally timid to a point it pains me. The household I was raised in didn't help.

I'm currently talking to a guy who I know is interested because he's actually said something. Appearantly he tried getting my attention prior, I'm actually a little scared to ask how long that's been going on. We've gone to the movies once after I took up his offer. I've since asked if he wanted to go out again but he then asked where which I had no answer for. We live in a retirement town so there's little to do for a kid much less an adult. I plan on asking again but I just get stuck every time so far which happened the fist time I asked and even when I took up his offer.

I couldn't imagine knowingly playing hard to get, especially in such a trash way. Hope she took at least a little lesson from this about perhaps not telling someone you're not interested when you are and then get surprised when they move on. Blocking might be a bit much but for all I know, he's been told that same line many times before and knows what game is more than likely about to happen.

It’s a lesson we all learn as we go about dating.

What changed it all for me? In 7th grade I was middle of the pack in popularity. I had a crush on the most popular girl. My parents caught wind and being super sweet offered to ‘help’ me woo her.

They offered to pay for flowers to be sent to her from me. My mom was a pageant winner and my dad got her so I said ok they know a thing or two about girls so I nervously said yes.

Day the flowers are delivered was beginning of summer. I got a call from her thanking me for them and quickly said she had to go but would call me back later. I waited by the phone for a week (pre cell phones). Never called back. Ok I’m bummed but not a huge deal.

Beginning of school 8th grade and while the teacher is out of the room the class gossip gay kid says “everyone, everyone…Billy bought Suzy flowers!!!” And the whole class all started laughing.

I turn to look at her and even she is laughing.

I Fuckin lost it.

I yelled at the gay kid that I was gonna smash his teeth down his Fuckin throat if he said another word, seeing my rage and that I’d grown 6” over the summer he did zip it.

Then I turned to her and said “what the fuck are you laughing for you big nosed fat ankled bitch!”

Shock on all their faces.

I’d had an awakening and was no longer shy, I wasn’t taking a bit of shit from anyone anymore.

I was mean to her after that. Teased her, made fun of everything about her, drew fucked up ugly ass pictures of her and passed them around class and we alllllll had a lot of laughs at her expense.

What do I know? Suddenly every girl in class is flirting with me and coming to talk to me?? This was strange to me. I thought it would make me the class reject being that way but nooooo… it was like it gave me super powers.

Soon after SHE’s chasing ME!

To the point where she was showing up at my house unannounced and my parents thought their plan was a great success!

What it taught me at my tender age was that girls do in fact like asshole bad boys. At least they are ATTRACTED to us. So that’s exactly what I became.

And to this day it still holds true. My wife and I are avid swingers and the more I turn on my asshole bad boy side at the clubs and parties the more the fuck sluts line up for me.

In the end I think it’s that we’re almost allll secretly insecure and feel attracted to those who seem to not be held down by those insecurities and are confident.

Point is when we talked about why she loved me part of the reason was, "because you fought for me". I think she was at a place in here situation where she felt like no one really loved her. She was just a housewife and maid and cook. Sometimes people need things in life that we don't understand.

I will say that you can't expect someone to fight for you if you just tell them you aren't ready to be in a relationship. The excuse has to be something that a person can fight. You can't fight someone's lack of desire for you.

I kind of look at this two ways. On one hand, she didn’t ghost him which is cruel and increasingly common and seemingly acceptable as more people flock to online, social media or apps to meet people during and post pandemic. They don’t realize you can still get attached to someone just by talking to them regularly. So on the one hand, I’m glad she let him know and didn’t ditch him with no explanation. If she was expecting a friendship or something to continue, I don’t know how reasonable that would’ve been but for him to block her seems a little harsh. But, like I said, communication is the better way to handle it, he responded respectfully , and it is how he chose to move on.

It’s the fact she seems to have expected him to ask her why, or what he could’ve done differently- or could do differently - so she could take advantage of those responses and work them to her benefit. That’s what covert narcissists to at the beginning of relationships. They literally NEED to feel that emotional dependence from another person and it truly devastates them when they realize they aren’t has in control as they’d thought or hoped. It’s funny she practically defines herself as one by her actions and response in this it’s out realizing it. Or, maybe she’s just immature. But covert narcissists operate this way and while I’m hoping we can get to a point in society where we normalize “hey this isn’t working, I wish you well” over ghosting, this wasn’t her intention.

By him blocking her it shows that he is actually bothered by it ending, and trying to inflict a little pain back himself by doing so. You could always just choose to not reach out.
