You could just approach and say hello, whats your name. If the guy asks your name back, thats 1 sign he is interested in you. If he didn't ask back he either has bad manners or doesn't care.
Continue with a conversation, ask him a couple questions about himself, when he answers, ask follow up questions. If he starts asking questions back he's interested.
If you don't feel comfortable starting a conversation the way above. Try the "Create Opportunity" style, find a reason to ask a guy for help or advice. the guy will feel great and useful(important) and therefore confident he might be good for you. "Hey, Im trying to choose a beer, what do you recommend?"..."I normally don't ask, but can you give me your opinion of how I look"...but you do have to follow up with conversation. Those just break the ice. This works in the bar and anywhere else.
Follow up with light physical touching on the shoulder, arm, thigh, knee, etc. It tells the guy, its okay if he touches you back. You can even find a reason to create physical contact, if you agree on something awesome..high five. Maybe pretend to be serious for a moment, as part of a joke, put your hand on his shoulder as you say it. Compliment him on his clothing, then touch an area, and compliment the fabric "I like your shirt,its really soft," rub his arm a little. etc

OP, as a guy who’s been picked up by a girl, most of the above advice is good.

That said, the one thing that totally clued me into the fact that she was in to me, and wasn’t a creep looking to drug and rob me, was the following:

She held a good conversation. I could tell that she was a genuinely interesting and good person. As in, she was a normal girl, and just out to have a good time. Guys can weed out weird girls when they can talk extensively about their work, hobbies, passions, etc.
She took me by the hand as we went from bar to bar. This was big. I wasn’t sure how interested she was until this point, and this little act completely flipped my mental switch from “oh, she’s a nice girl, let’s see how this goes” to “ok, she’s proactively choosing to be with me right now, don’t fuck this up.”

Bottom line: connect a bit with the guy, be a little vulnerable, and take the lead. He’ll be pleasantly surprised and you’ll have a great night.

Ok so there's 2 ways. 1 is straight up go for it which is cool but he might be suspicious. 2 is let him think it's his idea. Let him catch you looking at him, find your way into his general proximity, ask him "what the hell song is this, I swear I know it but I can't remember the name and it's killing me" and then cheers him with solid eye contact, ie slowly bolder moves. I am a female. I started dating women later in life but I had good results with men and can share some tips with you.

That would determine your approach..

Typically the ones that interested in on-night stands need very little but someone that has made their intentions clear.

Vs. the ones that are interested in the conversation, need a little more work.. (this is not to say they are not interested in a one-night stand, but they are more attracted to the intellect/charm vs. the "packaging")

Then from there, the basics that everyone has mentioned holds true.. a simple Hello and something to break the ice that establishes a reason for the conversation... (drinks, location, environment, etc.. I understand that "cold calling" is very difficult, so this is probably the most important thing as it doesn't put someone on the spot as it asks them an opinion).. Then from there, if the conversation is easy for you and him.. it should be easier to move into other topics of mutual interest... If your own is something physical, then its a way to suss out a suitable person as well.

Its not easy (for men or women).. but the basics are always there.. mutual/common obvious topics (hell, even the weather, though cheesy, is valid.. just lean into the "cheese" as a joke..

Honestly, as a guy, please just make it obvious that you're attracted. Compliment him and then start a regular conversation, or the other way around, but if you want him to know you're interested, make sure you have some sort of system in mind when approaching guys that lets you let them know you're attracted to them. They'll do the res (reciprocate to allow for further flirting between you both), most guys won't play hard to get or play the stupid mind games that some women do, if they're not interested at first, then chances are you'll know pretty quickly.

It's okay to try a few times if you're confident enough for that, but just as a man should with a woman, let it go if you aren't getting anywhere after the 2nd or 3rd try (I'm sure you're sane and don't need me to tell you this). Good luck :)

Guys are often ready to approach and/or really relieved when a girl talks to them. It's fucking refreshing. And rare. So attracting guys isn't the issue, so much as being receptive is. If you're noticing guys you'd like to talk to, not avoiding eye contact, and smiling at shared eye contact, is a good way to embolden a guy to acting.
Use observation to come up with things to talk about. I recall women that have opened me based off of what they observed me doing, perhaps teasing, perhaps sharing a simple observation. It works and it's easy.

It's way easier to initiate than people on here make it out to be; just say, "hey, can I hang out with you (guys)?"
Groups of 3 with mixed gender are the best to approach, groups of 5 coming close behind. Especially as you're warming up. It gives you a natural path for pairing off in conversation, you are less likely to get 'talked out' and
Initiating conversations usually goes smoother if you make your intentions clear, obviously you don't say, "I'm tryna do a fuck", but saying "I'm trying to meet some new people tonight" is totally fine. "I'm trying to get out of my shell and practice talking to strangers" is one I used a lot when I was first doing this. People are generally really understanding and appreciate the vulnerability, plus it gives you a great conversation starter and enhances other people's empathy for any awkwardness you have.
Go in focusing on making good conversations and meeting new people and you won't be disappointed or come across as desperate.
Push through the initial awkwardness of a conversation for a few minutes before giving up. If you sense a discomfort there it's OK to say "hey I'm getting the vibe that I might be interrupting time you guys wanted together, is it OK that I'm talking to you right now?" if you get rejected, don't take it personally and end the conversation respectfully.
Read these questions which have been proven to enhance intimacy; they aren't just for asking romantic targets, but just for getting to know anyone on a deeper level and increasing the vulnerability in the conversation. Plus it gives you something to lean on if you're afraid of lulls in the conversation.
Most people don't end bar nights with stranger sex (though if that's what you're looking for I'm sure you can find it, and no disrespect). I find this question to be fascinating and provides a whole different perspective. As someone who's been to quite a few bars and met some interesting girls, I think I can give you a few useful tips.

Firstly, as a woman, you're the fairer sex and you hold all the cards. If you want a man, you can get him 9 times out of 10. So it all comes down to what kind of guy you want to pick up. It could be the shy, silent guy who quietly sits by the bar watching the Tv or it could be the confident, adventurous guy who's not afraid to get up on that karaoke stage and yell on the mike without a care in the world or to get on that dance floor and make a complete fool of himself with his "moves" because he's just there to have fun and doesn't care what people think.

So, here's what you do. Spot a guy you like. Just gently tap him and say Hi or Hello with a smile. If you found him doing something interesting, compliment him on whatever you liked. Could be the cool message on his t shirt, etc.

If he compliments you in return or makes a witty comment that you find interesting, stay and talk to him. Ask a few questions about himself. What brings him there? does he travel? It can be anything. Just say it with a smile and look him in the eyes. If he has an interesting response and asks about you interesting questions in return, just laugh at his responses a little and touch or tap his arm while laughing.

If he still hasn't asked to buy you a drink by this point, I'd leave if I were you. If you really like him, just straight up ask him if he wants to go get a drink with you. Any guy who's not an idiot would offer to pay for the drinks. Sit really close to him when you're drinking. Lean on to his ear to say things. Keep laughing at his jokes and touch his arms or back or his thighs playfully.

He's into you if he playfully touches you back, asks a lot of questions about you, compliments you, etc. If he hasn't asked you already, ask him if he wants to dance.

Once its time for the closing bell, see if he asks for your number or asks to go back to his place. If not, just ask.

Girls that have approached me have always had questions or compliments like " do you wanna dance ? " or "I love your shirt" or "you really sang that well" or "I'm impressed by your courage to travel alone" or "What brings you here?" or a tap on the shoulder, "Hello there, I'm ____" and ended the night with direct questions like " I really wanna drink more. Guys are really easy, you don't need to do much. Especially if they are single and free. But a better question would be how do you know that they guy you are you are looking at is a normal descent human? Do as everybody else, talk, use your mouth. Also, find out what is the purpose of picking up guys, its it to fuck them of or to build a relationship and choose guys out of that criteria.

This is great, for scientific reasons:

#1 Introverted personality types actually correlate with high IQ, so the most intelligent men are probably not approaching a lot of women

#2 Low IQ correlates with crime and aggression, so psychopaths are actually probably type A personality, meeting most of the women, while intelligent, well-behaved men are usually invested in their intellectual pursuits.

So you might benefit from just striking up a conversation with whoever is next to you. Stand at the bar next to a man who is dressed business casual, or professional. Avoid tattoos (sorry fellas, it's a sign of rebellion). Find a guy who just got off of work, or out of a meeting. Ask them if they know the name of the song that's playing, if they understand the bar menu, if they understand what's on the tv, etc. It should escalate from there. Feel free to ask for his number and invite him to coffee to discuss the topic at hand in further detail. Not too hard

Guys love feeling like their the heros or the one in charge so If you can bring a man up on the pedestool he will more than 100 percent cherish the moment to have you to by his side. Make sure you pick the right guys for this too, some guys will get lost if they are insecure.

1: don’t be fat, this is super easy because it just means limiting what you eat to vegetables and some plain chicken. Also going to the gym 3-5 days a week.

To some degree it's harder - a lot of men may be looking for a specific aesthetic, but it probably still starts as a number game.

Normal advice for men - be in good shape, have your life in order and so on.

What sort of guys are you 'aiming' for?

Shy guys - you'll have a really good selection and just that you're talking to them will probably make their day if you're happy to "open" them. Possibly start a bit less 'direct' - with a question etc. (I say as someone who's still a pretty seriously shy guy.)

More extrovert guys - stand around with a bit of eye contact maybe.
