Every week:

“Dating apps are a scam.” “They’re broken.” “It’s just for profit.”

Okay… and yet somehow people are meeting, dating, hooking up, marrying.

If online dating didn’t work, it wouldn’t work for anyone. But it clearly works very well for some people. Most women I know can open an app and have multiple dates lined up within days. Some men absolutely crush too. So the app itself functions. Yes, it’s for profit. Obviously. So is literally every other platform you use. The real issue isn’t “profit.” It’s math.

If the user base skews male-heavy, outcomes won’t be evenly distributed. That’s not evil. That’s supply and demand. Add swipe data + global competition and you get a hyper-competitive marketplace where a small percentage of profiles get a lot of attention. That doesn’t mean it’s broken. It means it’s competitive.

Online dating isn’t meant to be a weeks-long therapy session where someone slowly warms up to you. It’s a rapid filter for baseline attraction.. looks, style, education, height, career, etc. Then you test the vibe in person. If you clear enough thresholds, it works extremely well.

I used it for about two years. Had plenty of good dates. Eventually found a great partner. It wasn’t magic. It was just vetting + patience.

If someone isn’t seeing results, maybe it’s: Ratio imbalance Globalized competition Profile quality Unrealistic expectations

Blaming “the greedy apps” feels easier than accepting that marketplaces reward demand.
