3%?

That sounds really low.

To be fair, it only talks about eating disorders. It ignores depression, low self-esteem, and social anxiety.

Wouldn't being obese be an eating disorder in itself?

[–]darwinsaves 75 points76 points77 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Nah, when you're obese, you have no problem eating.

[–]GiraffeOfTheEndWorld 18 points19 points20 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Non-stop eating is actually an eating disorder, though, but it is most often a side-effect/symptom of other mental health issues.

[–]CumBoxReseller 24 points25 points26 points 9 years ago (22 children) | Copy Link

I could understand 4% of males that keep fit but 4% of the general male population seems too high.

[–]imaydei 30 points31 points32 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Spend some time in the fitness community and you'll realize it's more like 20% of males who keep fit. It's pretty crazy.

[–]vortex30 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Define keep fit though...I'd say maybe, MAYBE 33% of males in modern, western societies engage in at least some minor form of fitness each week, be it a single jog and short weight routine, playing a sport, whatever. Of that 33%, probably only 20% (so 6-7% of the population) are actually really into fitness, go to the gym 4-6x per week, read fitness mags or r/fitness, and are the population group susceptible to steroids abuse. Of this percentage, I could DEFINITELY see at least 20% being into steroids, but that lowers our overall population number of male steroid users down to a mere 1-2%, a far cry from the 4-6% number used in OP's photo.

These numbers are all completely pulled out of my ass, as I also suspect the number in OPs photo was. I'd like to see a source on estimated steroid users among men aged 15-55, regardless of fitness habits.

[–]CumBoxReseller 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I go to gym 4 times a week, yes I can imagine it's a very high percentage but I would sooner believe 4% of gym users taking steroids than 4% of the whole male population.

[–]imaydei 22 points23 points24 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm just saying 4% of gym-going males is way too low. When you're privy to their distribution, you get a pretty shocking viewpoint. You'd be surprised at who's taking them if you knew. Usually you can't even tell.

[–]Amorne3 -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

i would say its more like 60% of males in the gym have used some form of steroids. The vast majority use creatine and oral test boosters or other types of performance enhancement.

[–]vortex30 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Eh, I don't count those as steroids, at all. We are talking anabolic steroids here, or we are talking about an issue which is a non-issue in comparison to eating disorders if we're going to start counting in Creatine and Tribulus and protein shakes.

[–]Amorne3 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was intending my message to say how hard is it to believe that a high percentage of religious lifters are taking AAS when the vast majority of men in the gym take these things. Not that creatine or tribulous is bad but the underlying message to get bigger is there.

[–]CoCo26 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I can't tell if you're fucking around or not lol. Creatine isn't a steroid? Test boosters are placebo pills

[–]Amorne3 -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not saying they're steroids I was saying that it's not hard to believe if that how many people using things like creatine and test boosters the idea is the same they are using things to get better. It may not be steroids however the use of these are wide spread and with how almost 100% of men in the gym using things like this is it really that much of a stretch to assume that most men will eventually kick it up a notch to achieve goals. Especially getting body dysmorphia and then feeling inadequate with other guys around you. I take AAS and know the vast majority of the men in my gym as well as some women do too

What is this?

[–]vortex30 -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I don't think using TRT counts as using steroids for the purposes of the picture above. That is doctor prescribed for a legitimate medical condition/concern. If we're counting doctor prescribed steroids here for legit purposes then this number goes up higher than 4-6% for sure, and also becomes completely meaningless. We need to be discussing the number of men using actual anabolic steroids (not creatine or Tribulus/other Testosterone boosters which are legal, pretty ineffective, and far less harmful than strong anabolic steroids) for the purpose of improving their body images, otherwise there is simply no comparison here to Eating Disorders.

[–]Alreadythrownout0 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Just an aside here; most pharma test is not any better than underground lab test (assuming it's a good reputable lab). The post injection pain from pharma is sometimes worse than UGL test. Blood tests almost always show similar numbers as well. Also the bathtub thing is pretty far from how these reputable labs do things. These guys have autoclaves and sanitary rooms. Not that you can't make test on your stove, but that's not how it goes most the time. But yeah you're totally right. I see posts on steroid forums almost literally every day about how to get your blood levels so you can be prescribed trt.

[–]Whisper 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't think using TRT counts as using steroids for the purposes of the picture above. That is doctor prescribed for a legitimate medical condition/concern

It's pretty much the same except in lower doses.

But "steroid use" != "health problem".

Some people go overboard, and hurt themselves, but that's usually with HGH, or something crazy like insulin or even DNP (not even once), not AAS or clen.

/steroid user

[–]desert_cruiser 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It could be an age group thing, so 4% of males in their 20's will have used steroids or something similar?

It doesn't really specify on what country or what the steroids are though, because you can take steroids for psoriasis and medical conditions, not just for working out.

[–]TheSummerain -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

5% of teens have admitted using them in one study.

2800 students from Jr and Sr high schools in Minnesota.

They also found tha up to 1/3 used unhealthy ways to increase muscle mass.

A other study put the U national number at about 1% for non medical uses. Average person is a man 25 - 35, is neither a competitive bodybuilder or nor professional or a meter athletes. 74% of those taking steroid for non medical uses held post secondary degrees and have far less high school drop outs.

[–]CumBoxReseller 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

These numbers are BS when you look at actually how they came up with them and their statistic sample size. Another study I found "Interventions for Addiction" - says steroid use among 9th grade girls is 7.3% but I guess that wouldn't go with the narrative of this sub so is not meme worthy.

i feel like maybe they're talking about supplements that arent allowed in professional competition, but are still legal. not JUST intravienous stuff.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Too add, I disagree steroids are a self esteem issue. Those with issues may use them but it is not mutually exclusive.

[–]rumple_fore_skin 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I take them and have for years. I feel like I don't take them because I am insecure about my body though. I take them because it's fun and makes me feel good.

[–]Mars3050 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean anecdotally from my experience it sounds about right. I can name 5-7 guys that I work with that openly discuss their use of steroids. I'm sure there's more who keep it to themselves.

[–]crazymusicman 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]JohnQAnon 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Steroids aren't limited to muscle growth. It's also used when you have heart problems.

[–]Tramm 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I know tons that did it in high school. They used dbol mostly though.

It seems really common around here (Texas area) and it likely has to do with the popularity of football. I was shopping for some in high school when I was having trouble putting on weight for football.

I gave it up when I heard alopecia was a side effect... my grandfather is bald and my mom and grandmother have thin hair so I'm trying to put that shit off for as long as possible.

[–]FeelTheJohnson1 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Proteus_Marius 22 points23 points24 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The scientifically determined percentage of the general prevalence of anorexia and other eating disorders stands at about 0.02% of the population.

Of that 0.02%, about 40% are boys, so the actual impact to girls is just over 0.01% which will translate to 1 to 2 new diagnoses per 100,000 population.

Which s a lot, medically speaking, but it's possible that large numbers of people have undiagnosed eating problems. That's been the case for most of human history, anyway

[–]MaynardJ222 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Am I retarded or did you mean 1 in 10,000?

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

http://www.med.unc.edu/www/newsarchive/2008/april/survey-finds-disordered-eating-behaviors-among-three-out-of-four-american-women "10% of women report symptoms related to eating disorders, which raised the total to 75% of American women who report having unhealthy thoughts or feelings related to food or their bodies"

Not sure about the validity of this but these numbers seem more realistic

[–]desert_cruiser 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's an online self-reported cross sectional survey from a small sample size and we don't know where the survey was promoted and a bunch of other factors.

You can't really draw too much conclusion from it as questions aren't objective and can result in information bias, plus the OP mentions having an eating disorder while the study just mentions symptoms that are related to an eating disorder.

[–]FeierInMeinHose 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"symptoms related to eating disorders" and "unhealthy thoughts or feelings" are very ambiguous terms used to inflate the numbers. No doubt in my mind that the study is heavily biased.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Are you joking? That's like 1-in-5!

[–]lasssilver[🍰] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They go by body mass.

[–]shallowbookworm 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's because it's wrong. A Google search gives me 10% who actually have eating disorders and 75% who endorse some unhealthy thoughts, feelings or behaviors related to food or their bodies.

[–]LoneCookie 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

First off, reported statistics for eating disorders are actually about 3%. And 40% of those people are men. So its not a great argument.

Second, my friends may have issues with eating but just not tell anyone. It is not something that is actively screened, and mental health issues in general are swept under the carpet often.

Third, men using steroids to look good? Not only! Performance enhancing is what it is. Steroids have a lot of side effects: anxiety, aggression, shrinking testicles, premature baldness, acne. All of these things would be worse socially for you.

[+]TheLizardQueen14 -17 points-16 points-15 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Literally almost every girl I know has struggled with some sort of eating disorder in their life even if only for a short while. Aren't these sort of statistics skewed because women are embarrassed to answer that question honestly?

[–]littlecampbell 30 points31 points32 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

You can't let anecdotal evidence disprove stats, that's bad science

[+]TheLizardQueen14 -17 points-16 points-15 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

That's fair except my question is still relevant. If someone has taken steroids carries less social stigma than an eating disorder, doesn't it? So, it's highly likely that statistic is skewed.

[–]littlecampbell 20 points21 points22 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Why would steroids carry less stigma? Unless prescribed by a doctor they are illegal.

[+]Winter_of_Discontent -8 points-7 points-6 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Pot is illegal, doesn't mean there's a stigma.

[–]andy_hoffman 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That is completely dependent on where you live.

[+]TheLizardQueen14 -14 points-13 points-12 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's just anecdotal and my opinion that they do.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What makes you think men answered honestly?

[–]TheLizardQueen14 -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't. I think both of the questions would make people want to answer in a way that makes them look and feel better (which would lead to more false negatives). I'm only suggesting that I think steroids has less of a negative stereotype than eating disorders.

It's like, I'm sure if the question was asking men and women about eating disorders, both wouldn't want to say yes, but men might feel more inclined to say no than women because it seems more uncommon or has more of a stigma in men. I'd venture to guess that the ED numbers between men and women were more similar than a survey would show.

[–]Havikz 302 points303 points304 points 9 years ago (64 children) | Copy Link

Don't forget the 10% of men (vaguely remember the statistic, I have no idea what it actually is but it's a lot of men) that get legitimately insecure about their penis size. Feminists will go "Haha look at those selfish men who care about the size of their penis" But they don't realize that the insecurity comes from the feeling of being unable to please somebody you like.

[–]Ragnrok 287 points288 points289 points 9 years ago (48 children) | Copy Link

I think your percentage is missing a zero off the end.

[–]ThatisPunny 161 points162 points163 points 9 years ago* (30 children) | Copy Link

Thinking about it, because porn is the only other penii men generally see and they tend to be rather large. For the majority of men the smallest penis they ever see is their own.

That's kind of sad.

[–]Ragnrok 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well swinging is tough to get into. Since single guys are a dime a dozen, you need a ladyfriend who is also into the lifestyle. Gangbangs are a bit easier since lots of single guys are needed. Either way, I'd recommend Fetlife, possibly SwingLifeStyle.com as well.

r/Swingers isn't a bad place to go for info.

I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

I can get hard but a lot of the time I get in my head with "fuck it's not happening" and start to panic a little bit.

There's been plenty of times where I had to give up because nothing was gunna happen that night

The first item on the list of feminist insults is to ridicule the size of a guys dick, followed closely by insulting their masculinity. "You fucking insecure, tiny-dick half-men!" or something along those lines seems to be a favorite. Oh, the irony...

There are many people with large penises that think they are actually packing something small because they think porn is average.

[–]FultonPig 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It kind of sucks that that insecurity is so prevalent. As long as you can make up for length or width with other skills, in my experience, you're fine. I'm very solidly average, and I've had FWBs who have been with people who were hung like stallions, and I've had girlfriends (my current one included) who are either trying to flatter me by saying I'm bigger than anyone else they've been with (which is statistically improbable, depending on how many people they've slept with), or had a small-enough sample size that average was the biggest (which is flattering, but not always relevant).

No matter how big or small you are, you can't change the size. What you can do is learn how to give awesome head, and how to use your fingers.

One way is boring, three ways diversifies your assets.

Yea except most men don't realize that past highschool nobody gives a shit about penis size as long as it's not actually small. A big dick is like an H1 Hummer, impressive to look at but impractical.

Go to any askwomen or sex thread that asks about penis size and almost every response is "I prefer the good ol 6 incher" and "big dicks hurt"

I have guy friends saying stupid shit like "bro I have a 9 inch penis" so I say "wow every woman must hate having sex with you", "nah they love it", "then youre not 9 inches"

It sucks because I have guy friends who are insecure about their dicks like "bro im like 6 inches but i wanna try gelking and get to 7"

It's not so much feminists "making fun of" (although that does happen) vs. carefully choosing which issues to scream about and which issues to ignore. Unfortunately, because of all those male CEOs and political leaders, men's issues can't even be acknowledged at this point, much less acted upon. Feminists, by comparison, have the mainstream media, corporations and politicians all bending over backwards to appease them. This gives them enormous power. Yet, like with the subject of body image, and other issues, they almost always ignore any side of it that deals with men and boys. This is why the criticism of feminists is so valid.

[–]pressure2LookGood 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

But it's not wrong.

This is a throwaway account for obvious reasons of embarrassment and shame.

I'm a decently looking guy. I have good luck with the ladies, I'm around 170lbs. Not fat. I have a successful job and I'm doing well for myself right now, but there's one issue.

I'm extremely insecure about the way I look. I don't know what caused it and I don't know why. I just am.

A couple of years ago I was so insecure about my body, I turned to steroids. I started looking for a way to get them, and I did.

I ended up spending 1,500 dollars on steroids all because of my bullshit insecurity. I look down at myself and see my stomach. I think I'm fat.

When I'm in the bathroom I look in the mirror and only see what's wrong. I know people tell me I'm not fat and by society's standards, I'm a healthy attractive male. I know that, but that isn't what my eyes see.

An insecurity drove me to find steroids and spend an exorbitant amount of money on them. They worked for a while.

I was big, strong, muscular and when I looked in the mirror I wasn't insecure but, I knew that wasn't me. So, after my cycle, I never did it again. Maintaining my insecurity but stopping my drive to use steroids to change my appearance.

I'm one of those insecure males. I see how men should look and I don't look like it.

I don't talk about it to anyone. I don't reveal my insecurity, I just wear shirts instead of walking around without one.

It sucks and I don't think it'll ever change... but I know I'm not the only one.

[–]pacmatt27 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

See this is what I'm trying to explain to some of the meatheads in a different thread. It's not about whether they're ok it's the effect it has on the average person. By your own admittance you're someone who should feel relatively attractive yet you're ashamed of your own body and feel pressured to take an illegal, dangerous substance.

My heart goes out to you, btw, it really does. I've struggled with insecurity about my body and I'm starting to get hold of it a bit. Still sucks ass though. I'm 6'5", skinny and I've always been skinny ("Oh boo-hoo", it's not as fun as it sounds). When you see so many guys who are ripped as fuck and you can't understand why you don't look like that, even when you're trying your best, it's crushing. It's not about whether one individual can take them safely, it's about whether that culture is good for men as a whole and it isn't. That is not a natural body shape and it's not healthy for people to feel pressured into looking like that.

[–]Bravo_Alpha -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How the fuck did you spend $1500 on a single cycle? What compounds were you running and for how long? I don't think the problem was the steroids, it was the way you approached it. A basic test cycle, which is really all you need for a beginner, can be done for less than $100. At 170lbs, you were nowhere near your genetic potential and ready to need steroids. Simply eating better and exercising more would have gotten you on the right path.

I was bulimic for over five years. I got beat up a LOT because of my weight back in high school. I still struggle with weight issues. And mental health issues tied to my body image, since I was mocked and humiliated and beaten for it when I was a kid.

It's really fucking astounding when I can read articles ALL DAY LONG about women struggling with body dysmorphia, anorexia, body image issues, etc. and not once does the author of the article mention that men have eating disorders too. I remember an episode of "Sally Jesse Raphael" back in the 90s when they had a male with bulimia on her show and he was treated like some kind of unique exotic animal. He wasn't and he's not. There are so many guys out there now struggling with eating disorders and body image issues, and the media refuses to acknowledge our existence. We don't get help. No one cares. If we speak up, we get mocked (by men and women; men for not being "manly" enough, and women because we're taking up valuable "complaint space" that would be better served helping women with their eating disorders, because evidently women need far more help than men do when it comes to this stuff....or something?) It's like we're invisible.

[–]interstate-15 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Its quite worse than that. As a man who struggles with eating disorder I can assure you no one gives a fuck about us, treatments are setup for women only and support groups don't welcome males.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Our culture really does think that women are the only people who deserve help, doesn't it? I mean, I run into this mindset all the time: women need assistance, men are on their own - and it's their fault. IT sucks because there's this widespread cultural assumption that men don't want help with their problems, that they're stoic and unemotional and stubborn, etc. And I get that - but there are also lots and lots of men who've moved past that who just want help and there's no fucking help anywhere. Lots of mockery, but no help.

Source: https://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/pubs/brochures/steroids/professionals/

[–]desert_cruiser 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

From an Australian study (2010)

"Less than 1% (0.3%) of Australians aged 14 years and over had ever used steroids for non-medical purposes and 0.1% of Australians aged 14 and over had used steroids for non-medical purposes in the past year. Lifetime use was highest among those aged 20–29 (0.6%) years and 30–39 years (0.5%); recent (past year) use was highest among those aged 20–29 years (0.3%), though the small size of the estimates meant that the 95% confidence intervals overlapped."

I don't think there would be accurate statistics for anything like this unfortunately, and it seems like the general public have only gotten more into working out over the past few years too so would have to be recent statistics.

I get where they're going, that both sexes have pressure to look a certain way. But this seems like a poor example.

Eating disorders are universally unhealthy, that's why we call them disorders. Staroids, if used correctly and sparingly, are not bad for you and can be a significant boost to your ability to work out. It's rightly a performance enhancer, which is why the Olympics prohibit it's use.

I think the issue is we're comparing two slightly different things in this image. Restricting your diet isn't an eating disorder but can lead to one. Using steroids isn't dangerous (in and of itself) but can become dangerous, depending on use. There are very real and serious consequences if not used properly and I highly doubt every user is well-versed in those risks. So this picture compares eating disorders with steroid use, whereas I'd be comparing harmful/risky steroid use with eating disorders or restricted diet with restricted diet and/or any steroid use.

Regardless, this picture is merely an effort to highlight the psychological impact of media portrayals of body image. In that, I think it does an adequate job. To be so concerned about the shape of your body that you restrict food or use steroids when you're already healthy is dangerous. As mentioned above, it also doesn't say how many men restrict and that number is growing. In either case it doesn't really matter because the purpose is to highlight that body image isn't just a female issue. It being a poor example isn't really that important because it's a meme. If you want a well-rounded comparison of the psychological and physical health risks associated with body image then you're going to need a relevant degree and to read lots of studies... Not look at a single meme. If you want a quick way to demonstrate a more complex point... Then this works.

[–]Archibald_Andino 17 points18 points19 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Regardless, this picture is merely an effort to highlight the psychological impact of media portrayals of body image. In that, I think it does an adequate job

That's it. The point isn't steroids. The point is how the ubiquitous male media body image of the fitness/muscle dude absolutely has a huge impact on boys and men. He can't be just thin, he has to be ripped too and yet the only energy devoted to this subject relates only to the female side of this issue.

[–]pacmatt27 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. Still getting drawn into an argument about whether or not these things are healthy. They're not, there's lots of evidence. But that doesn't actually matter. What matters is the psychological impact and the psychological impact for both men and women is not good.

[–]ElectronicDrug -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

To be so concerned about the shape of your body that you restrict food or use steroids when you're already healthy is dangerous.

That's an odd way to put it. Both of these things are perfectly healthy in moderation.

[–]pacmatt27 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link

Restricting food when you're a healthy size isn't healthy, regardless of moderation, because you will lose weight and become unhealthy. Using steroids when there's no medical necessity is, likewise, not a good thing. My point is that if you are engaging in behaviours that will move your body away from healthy then, by definition, they cannot be healthy.

Obviously restricting food if you're a little overweight isn't a problem. Using steroids if you have low muscle mass isn't a bad thing. Physically, both aren't necessarily bad for you (though they absolutely can be in a variety of situations). Psychologically? Well, there's lots of opinions on that. Personally, speaking as a practicing psychologist, I find the idea of drastically altering your appearance to fit in with a societal expectation to be a worrying and potentially damaging concept. Seeking validation from external sources generally does not line up well with psychological wellbeing.

[–]SaiHottari 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

More muscle is rarely unhealthy. Maintaining your healthy form (by diet or supplements) is rarely unhealthy and even sometimes necessary.

[–]pacmatt27 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

Anabolic steroids used without the oversight of a trained professional can be (and frequently are) incredibly dangerous. I never actually said anything to the effect of more muscle being unhealthy, I'm specifically talking about steroid use where I have addressed physical health. There are other concerns like decreased mobility and overfarming of livestock (for your sweet proteenz) which are less direct and impacting but, again, for the last time: the discussion around physical health is irrelevant. The main issue I am emphasising is the psychosocial impact of stereotyping body-image. I'm also supporting the idea that it affects both genders equally. Forget the physical health aspect, literally kick it right off the table, ignore it completely. Men and women are still equally affected psychologically by these issues and it should not be a gendered discussion.

Never said maintaining a healthy weight by diet or supplements was unhealthy. Can you please read what I'm actually writing instead of saying something reactionary because I seemingly contradicted fitness bro laws #1 and 2: always be swole and never not be swole, respectively.

[–]SaiHottari 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

I am reading, why don't you? As I said, I don't disagree with the message, just the words used. It's comparing diet to eating disorder. Staroids aren't the problem, abusing them is. The image posted isn't specifying steroid abuse, but staroid use in general, which I don't think is a fair comparison to an eating disorder.

[–]pacmatt27 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Well you disagreed with something I never said so I'll question that first assertion.

Lol... Ok... Food isn't the problem, abusing it is. Steroids are dangerous, there's plenty of evidence. Lots of chemicals are dangerous depending on the dose. Nobody uses recreational anabolic steroids correctly because they're not overseen by a qualified professional. Self-administration is illegal and dangerous. What's with all the mental gymnastics? Like, you do you and inject yourself full of shit if you want but regardless of how smart you think you are it's still dangerous.

But whatever, ignore all that if you want. Say I'm completely wrong (for the sake of the argument), you're deliberately missing the point of the meme. I don't care about steroid use. I care about people acting like body image is just a women's issue when it obviously isn't. It bothers me that men are engaging in dangerous, illegal, body altering methods just to feel like they're real men. How sad is that?

[–]SaiHottari 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

I will ignore it. It's frankly insulting people's intelligence to assume nobody is smart enough to manipulate their own hormone levels safely. And to lump those people in as comparable to people with an eating disorder is silly.

As for your second point, I've said it repeatedly; I don't disagree with the message behind the meme. I disagree with the presentation for the reasons I just mentioned.

[–]pacmatt27 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

It's frankly insulting people's intelligence to assume nobody is smart enough to manipulate their own hormone levels safely.

Lmfao! Yeah good one. Ok, even if 30% of people are capable of that (and I think that's pretty bloody generous considering some of the guys I've seen at the gym), that still leaves say 70% who aren't. What you're saying is ridiculous and irresponsible. Don't believe me, go ahead and ask any doctor whether you should be taking steroids you acquired illegally and whether it's safe. I don't see how it's silly to compare the two. You're fucking with your body in a potentially dangerous and/or life-threatening way for the sake of vanity. Maybe you'll be fine but lots of people aren't.

Right, but you're just being pedantic then aren't you? You agree with the meme? Shut up about steroids then. As I've said repeatedly, it's not an academic essay, it's a meme. There is absolutely no chance of pleasing everyone in so few words considering the subject has so many grey areas. Make your own if you want but the point remains the same so stop banging on about steroids just cos you love being swole so much. Nobody cares. We all get what it's saying. You love steroids. Well done.

[–]ElectronicDrug 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Restricting food is necessary for a lot of people to maintain a healthy weight. It's not always about losing weight. Intuitive eating does not work for everyone.

[–]pacmatt27 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

If you're maintaining a healthy intake of food it isn't really what I'd label restriction... Not medically. Ok they are imposing a restriction on themselves but it's a normal caloric intake, their body will adapt in time and "restriction" will no longer be necessary. When I say restriction I mean eating below your calorie requirements such that you begin to lose weight. I mean, we're discussing semantics here, hopefully you can understand my point without going any further into this.

Managing your diet specifically to lose weight is not healthy if you're already at a healthy weight. Using steroids to gain weight is potentially unhealthy if you're already at a healthy weight. Despite all the nuance involved in that discussion it really is irrelevant. The meme's point and my original point is that, health aside, what is the psychological impact of reinforcing body image stereotypes? I would propose that it's negative for those who do not naturally conform to said stereotype. It creates confidence issues, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, risky behaviours like steroid use (which absolutely can be dangerous) and whole host of other problems. Problems which not only damage individuals but wider society. Can you manage these things in moderation, sure you can, but many can't. Both men and women. Maybe we should just stop applying so much pressure on people to look a certain way. It's not hard for the media to portray a lot of different body types in films and TV. This is something that affects both genders to varying degrees so why treat it like it's only a problem for one or, worse, neither?

The issue here is that telling people how they should look is harmful and wrong (both physically and psychologically). Yes there is nuance in these arguments but if you really think that behaviour is ok then you are wrong. People should be allowed to look how they want as long as they are healthy and happy. If you're unhealthy, your doctor should be telling you that, nobody else. I find it odd that anyone could stand contrary to that position with a straight face.

[–]ElectronicDrug 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah I wasn't saying you were wrong, just that it was an odd way of putting it. - specifically referring to "restricting food"

As for the psychological side, I won't even pretend to know enough about it. I don't think people should be told how to look or act, but I do think we shouldn't hide under not offending someone and not make it clear that being overweight or underweight IS unhealthy. I'm not advocating going around telling fat people to lose weight, but perhaps twinkies should have the equivalent of a surgeon general's warning.

[–]pacmatt27 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Perhaps because for me restriction means a very specific thing which would be of medical concern. Tbf I might be slightly wrong about the precise meaning but the meaning I had in my head when I said it was as described above.

Otherwise, I absolutely agree. Problem is most people don't know anything about your circumstances or are unqualified to discuss the matter. Most people don't know shit about a healthy diet or exercise routine so it's pretty irritating when they try and give advice. Still, the main issue was just about highlighting the double-standards in gender around body image. Less about actual physical health itself.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

<To be so concerned about the shape of your body that you [further] restrict food or use steroids when you're already healthy is dangerous

I added a word that i think was implied to make it more clear for you.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

<Staroids, if used correctly and sparingly, are not bad for you

Same can be said about dieting...

[–]SaiHottari 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You're absolutely right, which is why dieting would be a better comparison than the eating disorders it's currently being compared to.

[–]pacmatt27 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It sure would. But it's a meme, not an academic essay, intended to get you to think about the impact of ignoring men's health when talking about body image.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So you'd rather discuss the problem with the infographic than the problems in society.

[–]SaiHottari 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Just as I said in my initial comment, I get the message it's trying to convey, and I don't necessarily disagree. I'm just critiquing the comparison it's using to send that message.

[–]wanked_in_space 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Eating disorders are universally unhealthy, that's why we call them disorders. Staroids, if used correctly and sparingly, are not bad for you and can be a significant boost to your ability to work out.

Anabolic steroids are safe... Except for the risk of heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, liver problems, testicular atrophy, stunted growth in younger people, tendon rupture and potentially even cancer. Not to mention the potential risks involved with injection drug use and dealing with drug dealers/importing things illegally from China, etc.

The doses used for doping are far higher than those prescribed for men with low testosterone, and even then the risk and benefits need to be weighed.

And then some dumb ass like you comes here and says something this dumb.

[–]ElectronicDrug -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Anabolic steroids are safe... Except for the risk of heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure,

None of these increase significantly at a low/cruise dose.

liver problems,

Only with oral steroids

testicular atrophy,

Testicular atrophy is a side effect more than a risk.

stunted growth in younger people,

He did say used correctly.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Which is not at all the issue this post is addressing

[–]dregofdeath 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Steroids also cause cardio hypertrophy, liver failure, gynecomastia etc. so yes it is unhealthy most of time

[–]Lets69Chipmunks 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not really unless you're already unhealthy have bad lipids, etc... With proper research & knowing what you're actually injecting you can avoid a lot of those side effects. It helps if you actually learn how to read your blood tests & take appropriate action to make sure they're in check.

[–]dregofdeath -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fasting isn't unhealthy unless you do it wrong too

[–]Bravo_Alpha 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Unless you're taking orals, steroids aren't generally liver toxic. If you cycle off properly, you won't have to worry about gyno either. Cardio hypertrophy can still happen, but the damage is minimal unless you decide to blast year round. Cycling off after 12-16 weeks or blasting and cruising is recommended.

[–]dregofdeath 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah and fasting isn't dangerous if done properly either so...

[+]SaiHottari -6 points-5 points-4 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That's not the steroids, that's testosterone. If you abuse steroids, testosterone gets too high and you will damage yourself. Used sparingly as I said will not cause these problems.

[–]dregofdeath 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Testosterone is a steroid? You clearly don't know what you are talking about. The effects of cardiac hypertrophy doesn't matter how high you're tedtosterone is its an effect of any steroid, as are all the other side effects. And stuff like tren have other progesterone effects

[–]SaiHottari -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No. That's not what I said.

[–]jzand219 -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Yes, 'staroids' are perfectly healthy when aquired illegally and taken without the supervision of a doctor.

[–]Liulfr 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

"if used correctly and sparingly"

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

If eating disorders are used correctly and sparingly, they can be a very good way to lose weight.

[–]SaiHottari 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Then we wouldn't call it an eating disorder, we'd call it a diet.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nailed it! The power is in the nomenclature.

[–]kursdragon -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You don't know what the words eating disorder mean then if that's what you think. An eating disorder isn't just choosing not to eat for a couple of days/weeks to cut back on weight, it's not having the ability to choose whether you want to eat, you just never do because you're so afraid of gaining weight. At least for anorexia, it all depends on what kind of eating disorder you have though.

[–]pacmatt27 -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Using a controlled substance correctly would involve the supervision of a doctor, if I'm not mistaken. Or does lifting a lot and commenting on men's fitness forums instantly grant you a medical doctorate from the university of swoletonia?

[–]treasrang -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

The substances should not be controlled.

You do not need direct medical oversight to use steroids safely.

[–]pacmatt27 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I mean, you do.

[–]treasrang -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I mean, you don't.

[–]pacmatt27 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I mean, you do because you're not a doctor so you have no fucking idea what you're doing. You don't know for certain what substance is in that syringe, you don't know what effect it's going to have on all of your organs, you aren't having regular blood tests to monitor its effects and you aren't in control of your own consumption, no matter how much you want to think you are. There's a reason doctors can't prescribe themselves medication, you do realise that, right?

"Oh no but I took 2 months of a personal training course and I talk to my bros all the time about it, I even read some biased papers about steroid use so I know what I'm doing!"

(In case it's lost through text, imagine me doing a moron voice while saying the above quote.)

Well done, you still have no idea what you're doing. I know everyone likes to think they're smart, in control of their own bodies and can read research but, surprise! They're not. Only 50% of the population could fairly be called smart so there's a 50/50 chance you're a fucking dumbass. There's a reason why it takes 10-16 years to become a doctor and there's a reason why steroids aren't stocked over the counter at your local pharmacy, you enormous, jiggling tit.

[–]treasrang -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I mean, you do because you're not a doctor so you have no fucking idea what you're doing.

Simply not true and really impossible for you to know one way or the other.

You don't know for certain what substance is in that syringe

I know it as well as anyone else who uses Bayer's products.

you don't know what effect it's going to have on all of your organs

I do, the information is widely available.

you aren't having regular blood tests to monitor its effects

I pay out of pocket for extensive blood work every 60 days and track the values over time to identify trends.

Blood testing is also only one aspect of the regular oversight I engage in.

you aren't in control of your own consumption, no matter how much you want to think you are.

What do you mean by that?

There's a reason doctors can't prescribe themselves medication, you do realise that, right?

I know the reasoning, but considering the entire concept of restricting access to certain drugs is something I disagree with on principle, it doesn't concern me much.

"Oh no but I took 2 months of a personal training course and I talk to my bros all the time about it, I even read some biased papers about steroid use so I know what I'm doing!"

Strawman so big you could burn Nicolas Cage in it.

in control of their own bodies

I am in control of my own body, and that is really the end of the issue as far as I'm concerned.

There's a reason why it takes 10-16 years to become a doctor

Because they are responsible for a much larger body of knowledge than self administering one class of drug.

They also undergo a great deal of testing and certification because they are responsible for the health of others, rather than just themselves.

there's a reason why steroids aren't stocked over the counter at your local pharmacy

Yes, America's abusive drug policy.

However, in this case, the FDA, AMA, and DEA all recommended against the scheduling of anabolic steroids.

[–]pacmatt27 -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're clearly not a doctor. So, no, you don't have a clue. It's obvious from the way you're discussing this.

I doubt you have the expertise required to make an informed decision in this area. Widely available or not. Even if you do, the overwhelming majority do not. The previous point also applies to your blood tests (since most won't be doing that), that is, if I am to believe you. Also who the hell are you paying to keep track of your illegal steroid use? Not that I fucking care because it's irrelevant when discussing the psychosocial impact of stereotyped body-image for men and women.

What do you mean by that?

I mean exactly what I said, there are lots of things which impact your consumption and will diminish your ability to control yourself. Seeing as you're already using a dangerous, illegal substance for no medical benefit besides vanity, I'd say we've crossed that threshold already!

I know the reasoning, but considering the entire concept of restricting access to certain drugs is something I disagree with on principle, it doesn't concern me much.

Then you're a moron.

Strawman so big you could burn Nicolas Cage in it.

Not a strawman, not even a wicker man (dumbass), you don't have the requisite knowledge to make that judgement. Even if you did, for argument's sake, the vast majority don't (which is my actual point you gibbering goon). Even ignoring that, you still aren't really addressing the actual point of the fucking meme which is that people shouldn't feel pressured into doing steroids to be happy with their bodies. This subculture shouldn't even be a thing in the first place. Honestly, the more we speak the more I'm convinced I'm talking to a colossal bag of broken penises.

I am in control of my own body, and that is really the end of the issue as far as I'm concerned.

Lol. Taking harmful, illegal substances for the sake of vanity. Oh yeah your willpower is off the charts. Ain't nobody influencing you except you. Big fat 10 out of 10. Before you even try to give me that performance enhancing crap: you're not a professional athlete so your performance doesn't matter - even if you were you'd be disqualified for using. Aside from that you're a human so your strength is fucking pathetic compared to literally any other animal so it serves no practical benefit besides vanity. Anything requiring above-average strength is done via machinery. I have never encountered a situation where I was too weak to do something another person would have been able to and I'm not exactly Hercules. Work out for your health but don't pretend taking steroids is anything but insecurity.

Because they are responsible for a much larger body of knowledge than self administering one class of drug. They also undergo a great deal of testing and certification because they are responsible for the health of others, rather than just themselves.

Point missed, good one! They also know how the functional aspects of how these drugs work, where they act/interact, what they do to your body, what the current literature says about it, how they interact with other substances, what genetic differences may impact on their activity. They have to attend regular supervision to ensure their knowledge in their specialist area is up to date. Uhm... Do you? Do you have any training in critical analysis and academic writing at all? Is it to postgraduate level? Because you'll need at least that to stand any chance of knowing what the fuck you're doing self-administering harmful substances. Hey, wait, never mind. Ignore that. Because even if you're a fucking expert on steroids (which you blatantly aren't) and their physical and psychological impact, most people are not.

Yes, America's abusive drug policy.

"OOH AMURICA, WHERE'S MA FREEDUMB YOU PROMISED >:(". Weird that it's illegal in most other countries too. Honestly, you sound more and more like an ignorant nutter as this conversation progresses. Do whatever you want mate. Don't blame me when your nuts are broken and you see how the next generation of men are even more insecure, ignorant and reckless than you.

[–]jzand219 -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Point is, that doesn't happen.

[–]SuperSulf 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]berserker87 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

4-6% of men do not use steroids. Its closer to .5%.

And the number of people with eating disorders in the country is overwhelmingly higher than that.

I get the sentiment being made, but why minimize female eating disorders and way over-represent male steroid abuse? Like, you can make the point that "its not a gender issue" without needlessly misrepresenting reality to kind of make it a goddamn gender issue.

[–]Voctr 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not like eating disorders are just a female thing. Males can actually suffer from eating disorders as well. I don't really understand why they don't just compare eating disorder to eating disorder.

[–]Danger_Zebra 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]ElectronicDrug 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

Where the fuck is the source for 4-6% of men being on steroids

[–]its710somewhere 11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

They gave the source right there in the image. It's right below the statistic.

[–]ElectronicDrug 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I searched the site and they make claims of stats for students in 2005, then the bottom of the page has no sources newer than 2000. I'm also mobile so I might have missed something, but I don't see a legitimate source for that anywhere.

[–]its710somewhere 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I didn't make the meme, I was just saying that they gave a source. If that source doesn't actually say what they are claiming it does, then whoever made this is being pretty dishonest.

[–]ElectronicDrug 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I searched around a bit more (again mobile) and found a legitimate source for the 4-6%, but that applies to high school students of both genders. Not the entire male population.

Anyway, it's not entirely accurate, but it gets its point across I guess.

[–]skinnyguy699 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good work man. Although the post raises a good point, definitely doesn't deserve upvotes if it's bullshit statistics.

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points-3 points 9 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

[–]ElectronicDrug 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

And where's your source for that? Lol.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

It's anecdotical. But based on ten years of experience in the gym. Is it too hard to believe? Not 6% of all guys. Just of the ones who take lifting very seriously. And there are different levels of juicing too. It's not as simple as shouting "steroids"

[–]ElectronicDrug 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm not doubting you. I work out heavily. I'd estimate as high as 10% of males that lift seriously.

4-6% of the male population (like the image suggests)? No fucking way. That's probably the amount of males that go to the gym seriously.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Way less than 6% of men workout intensively and effectively I'd wager. If you're buff you're rarer than one in a hundred

[–]ElectronicDrug 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was including runners and bikers and such. Dunno. Just an estimate out of my head.

[–]SaiHottari 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Steroids on their own aren't unhealthy. They're an excellent boost to your ability to work out. It's when you abuse them that they can become a problem. All they're really doing is kicking testosterone production up.

[–]MrQuizzles 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

All they're really doing is kicking testosterone production up.

The opposite. They shut natural testosterone production down for as long as you're on them + a few weeks.

[–]Lets69Chipmunks 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

True but that's 100% preventable, just making sure you're using HCG while on steroids & your body keeps producing.

[–]SaiHottari 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Correct me if I'm wrong, but steroids are a class of drug designed to boost production of your body's own hormones, are they not? The steroids in question used by many gym goers target testosterone production.

[–]MrQuizzles 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You are not correct. Steroids are synthetic hormones, usually testosterone. People literally inject themselves with testosterone in order to boost their levels.

Upon receiving testosterone from an exogenous source, your natural production will turn off.

[–]SaiHottari 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Strange. Then what is the difference between anabolic steroids and the testosterone injections men with low T receive? I am at least aware those are two different drugs.

Nvm just did the legwork, they are the same drug. My apologies.

[–]MrQuizzles 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The testosterone used for steroids and the testosterone used for TRT are not different. All that's different is where you get them (and the amount you take).

There are many other hormones that are steroids, though; It's not just testosterone. They're mostly all slight variations on the testosterone molecule or its metabolites, as they all act upon the testosterone receptor. They're also always used alongside testosterone. Trenbolone and Nandrolone are two of the more popular ones.

[–]MEatRHIT 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Also plenty of people hop on and don't really "look" like they are on, most people think that they are a replacement for hard work when in reality they just allow you to work harder and get results faster. Plenty of people that go on aren't training effectively to begin with so their results are less than stellar.

[–]Theycallmesocks13 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This hit close to home, I actually bought about $130 worth of my first cycle, then backed out cause I got scared of messing up the injections, and didn't know who to ask for help..

[–]Bravo_Alpha 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is why anabolic steroids should be legalized for recreational use. It takes a LOT of research to do it on your own, and it can be overwhelming the first time you try to do it. Legalizing them would make it easier to get help if you don't know the proper injection technique, dosing, etc. Not to mention the ability to get properly dosed gear to begin with, rather than spinning the wheel on UGL gear. Women who want to be men can already get testosterone injections, but men who want to be more of a man don't get the same luxury? Sounds like gender inequality to me.

I'm confused - the imgur link says: (source) Jul 1 2015

The linked source reddit thread, different from this one, is over a year old.

Good to see this getting attention!!!

[–]treasrang 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Steroids use is not a litmus test for body image issues.

[–]Benjamminmiller 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Both of these things sound like gender issues...

Neither would be a problem if we didn't have gendered expectations about physical appearance.

[–]T2112 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have to admit i actually have thought about steroids but never really did it because of how hard they seemed to be to get.

[–]FruitierGnome 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't think majority of people actually beleive the sjw garbage and talk of women being "oppressed" by beauty standards. Just the media, celebrities, and politicians like to make us think that its more important than actual issues.

Imgur is down, got another link?

A shit title and troll OP. Check the other discussions tab, this is a repost with the same title posted a year ago.

Browse /r/bodybuilding or /r/steroids for a few minutes to catch a quick glimpse of the culture.

I will likely use some form of illicit steroid in my lifetime.

Almost entirely out of curiosity.

[–]Armagetiton 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To be fair though, steroids aren't as bad as a lot of people think. You can abuse them, and you can use them responsibly with zero or near zero side effects. Do research and remember that it's cheating if you play any competitive sport.

You can't say the same for eating disorders.

[–]Champigne 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Is a site called "steroid abuse" really a credible source.

[–]NoobSailboat444 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Steroids.

Hey, not a bad idea

[–]lamelavalamps 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Does anyone know what studies are being cited? I also think these numbers are off since they don't include anything about self esteem issues or depression.

[–]SolongStarbird 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's an interesting point to make. From a propaganda standpoint, it seems to have done well, cosidering the likes. And tbh, I find myself agreeing with it too...

[–]pardonmeimdrunk 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

All that women have to do to achieve the ideal shape is monitor their diet so that they don't get fat. Don't overeat. For men it's this plus working out, physical exercise and moving around heavy objects with as much force as possible. Not only are the standards at least equal, the men have to do so much more work on top of it.

[–]the_surfing_unicorn -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Have you noticed, however, that men are much more picky about their mate choices than females? You see fat men with hot women much more than you see a hot man with a fat woman. So the amount of pressure on each sex is different.

[–]pacmatt27 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Online dating statistics suggest otherwise.

[–]the_surfing_unicorn 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A simple google search shows how incredibly inaccurate this post is. About 3/4 of females have "disordered eating".

http://psychcentral.com/news/2008/04/23/75-percent-of-women-have-disordered-eating/2181.html

[–]YRuafraid 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The pressure to look a certain way comes from women themselves, the competition is fierce on that side and women compete with one another on looks more than guys do with themselves. Guys usually don't care if you're as skinny as a stick and they don't dictate how much makeup you wear... they just want to get laid. Girls will straight up condemn guys that are under 6 ft though, but that's a different story

[–]pacmatt27 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And guys who are skinny, and guys who are fat, and guys who are bald, and guys who are poor... Shall I stop there?

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What's the point here? pressure exists? Pressure awareness month is in order? Pressure prevention day?

Don't be a weak pussy or a fat bitch. Done.

Yeah but steroids can be awesome if done right.

[+]kurwapolanstronk -13 points-12 points-11 points 9 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

There is nothing wrong with smart steroid use, the same can't be said about eating disorders, false equivalence.

[–]Ellis4Life 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Fasting is a major part of many diets and cultures and if done correctly can have some health benefits. Just like steroids, it becomes dangerous when abused and done irresponsibly due to self esteem and body image issues.

[–]ElectronicDrug 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

An eating disorder isn't fasting though.

The image would be much better if it compared eating disorders and steroid abuse.

[–]kurwapolanstronk 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

I wouldn't consider fasting an eating disorder, even if you do, fasting would be the exception that proves the rule. The rest of eating disorders like regurgitating, overeating, eating non-food items will eventually ruin your body and mind. You can't eat like shit every other day responsibly, you can't eat stones, earth, glass and feces responsibly, you can't puke your guts out responsibly. You can fast every other day if you feast like a king when you do eat.

[–]Ellis4Life -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. Fasting is not an eating disorder. Just like the fact that steroid use isn't too detrimental if done correctly and under the supervision of a professional. It's when fasting gets abused and done incorrectly that it becomes a disorder. Same applies to steroid use.

Other than that the are illegal in many jurisdictions.

So one can argue they are even worse since in order to obtain them you have to illegally purchase them.

It is an excellent example of what people are willing to do to thier bodies in pursuit of an ideal appearance.

[–]kurwapolanstronk -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I get my gear straight from the pharmacy, so it does not concern me.

[–]ElectronicDrug -5 points-4 points-3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Except for the many countries where they are legal?

You can argue they're worse but it wouldn't make sense as not everyone lives in the US

If you're using them to bulk without the observation of a doctor, that is, by definition, not smart steroid use.

[–]kurwapolanstronk -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Smart steroid use involves years of strength training experience, good diet, no alcohol and other recreational drugs, friendly doctor, regular blood tests and more.

[–]ChestyLaRue83 -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Eating disorders are extremely difficult to overcome. They are psychologically and physically damaging. They last for years, some decades.

Bullshit 1 in 20 men are on steroids. Cmon now.
