My wife and I are separating after 16 years of marriage, 20 years together.

Through the marriage I’ve been emotionally unavailable, unkind and selfish. I’ve disappointed her and upset her so many times.

So now I’m realizing that this despair I’m feeling is all my fault, and the true impact I had on her - even though she told me many times.

The guilt and regret is more than I can handle. We’re in our apartment for another month and it brings me so much pain to see all of the things we’ve accumulated over the years, all the photos and memories.

I can’t get any work done, I feel like my life has been a complete and utter failure, and I’m sitting here realizing that it’s all because I just couldn’t be a little softer, a little nicer. Listen a little longer or more intently. I hate myself for how I’ve treated her.

On top of all this, I’m terrified of having to tell my family and friends. I just want to say fuck it all and disappear off the grid somewhere. I wasn’t even emotionally mature enough to handle basic marriage responsibilities, how the hell am I going to navigate this?

Just needed to vent, thanks for listening.
