I often hear it said that activity-based dates like bowling, exercising, going to an arcade, or playing tennis or something make for the best first dates because they supposedly diffuse the anxiety and awkwardness and make it easier to bond and really get to know a person.

Do you agree? I can see how this advice could be used to excuse things like walk dates and other low effort dates. Also, some of these activities are things you’d do with friends, so I think they’re lacking in romance and special-ness for a first date. I think they run the risk of rendering you and your date “bros". To me, there's something unceremonious about showing up to a date prepared for physical exercise as opposed to wearing a nice dress and perhaps wearing things that wouldn't pair well with physical activity.
