The practice apparently calcifies vocal folds permanently. People who do this sound like croaking toads or hissing lizards by 60.

I knew a guy in college who constantly spoke in vocal fry to make his voice sound deeper, because his voice was naturally very high pitched and nasally. It didn’t work. His voice just sounded creaky, and it literally hurt my ears.

Your "adams apple" is just your vocal cords. Its the exact same tissue that women have but women have tighter vocal cords and men's are looser. When it's loose, it bulges out. When you make you voice high you pull upwards voluntarily on that vocal cord. Thats why it looks like the "adams apple" is moving.

My ex did that and he also kept his voice really monotone because of it. He hated my 2nd husband due to jealousy and teased his voice. My 2nd husband has a pretty deep voice, as deep as my ex, he just has more vocal range. Has more emotion in his voice, and can sing. Men who think other men have to laugh in monotone... so weird.

Whenever my ex was defensive or throwing fits his voice got so high pitched. i had to fight my instinct to laugh sometimes because his voice changed so much in those moments. Now I'm wondering if it's because it was his authentic voice breaking through.

Vocal cord timbre has more to do with thickness and length. More testosterone makes the vocal chords thicker and longer, which makes their voices deeper. Men who fake it don’t have enough testosterone

Watch him here with his Adam's apple. This post has obvious movement. On others its much more subtle so I just treat it as practice. ⚠️: this guy is corny AF

I watched a documentary about Elizabeth Holmes (infamous Theranos CEO) and a lot of people said that she was faking her deep voice in order to appear more trustworthy and apparently there's some psychological effect behind it, but to me, she sounds really awkward and I honestly don't know why people do it on purpose.

There are some people who intentionally change their voices, but how you sound and how you speak is determined by physical plus cultural traits.

See studies on Asian, particularly Japanese women a cross generations and in comparison to women from other cultures.

It’s very much about social conditioning and is not necessarily a conscious choice they are making.

I have always been picky about men's voices -- I get very turned off by an affected-sounding way of speaking, and this may explain the underpinnings of my creeped-out reaction to it. People of any ethnicity who affect a "blaccent" to try to sound cool and hip are another of my pet peeves. (I can tell when black guys try to sound 'blacker' by putting it on -- Obama does it occasionally)
