I was a door girl at a strip club, not even in the vulnerable position of being naked, and still experienced many of these things. Propositioned for prostitution by the customers, sexual harassment from the valet, one of the managers would stand super close to me and stick his finger in my ear… Once I was at another club helping with an event, a customer slapped my butt, and the bouncer wouldn’t throw him out because “he was just drunk.”

I knew of dancers who were followed home and robbed, assaulted in the private dance rooms… It’s horrible.

The point about Iceland is so key.

Men's demand for strippers (and prostitutes, and porn stars) far, far, far outstrips the willing supply.

When women are educated, economically liberated, and allowed freedom of choice, the number who opt to become strippers is negligible. Meanwhile, the number of men who want to be able to pay for access to naked women is not any lower, and indeed may even go up because men react to women's liberation by doubling down on abusing women.

So there are two options for those who want to perpetuate the sex industry: block women's advancement in your own country such that women can still be exploited by the sex industry, or traffic in girls from other countries to exploit.

It's disgusting how being a stripper is marketed as this easy way to make a ton of money to young women. I'm ashamed to admit that I went to a strip club once, many years ago, with a female friend. It was marketed in our town as something fun for Uni/college kids to do, even for women!

It was every bit as repulsive as you can imagine. I could literally see the smug contempt on the men's faces, as the strippers had to go to THEM and "market their services". That's something they dont tell you about strip clubs, the strippers are usually the ones approaching the guys and trying to convince them to buy to a lap dance, unless they are really well known and have a ton of regulars. Men love using their money to create a fake scenario where they are the prize and the girl has to fight for them, because otherwise she probably wouldnt give them the time of day. And they absolutely feel that because they paid you money, you owe them whatever they want. Guy who goes to strip clubs = barely better than a John, in my opinion.

Strip clubs, like brothels, are a place where men can openly give in to the urge to treat women as subhuman pieces of meat that are good only for sex. In Canada it’s even a game to hit strippers with coins on their breasts and genitalia to hurt them and to shame them, much to the amusement of men around.

Reading the first slide was very important for me wow. At first I thought, of course a place we’re women and their bodies are literally a commodity like in a vending machine would be a violent place for them to be, but I think that’s with a more feminist mindset I have now. Because thinking back a little bit I feel like I never thought of strippers experiences physical violence because often in media we see the situation of the bouncer protecting them (Thinking of scenes where a man tries to touch one of the women and the bouncer intervenes and points to a sign that says “don’t touch the girls” or whatever). Also of course media won’t show how gross the men in these clubs are because that’ll ruin their plot 🙄

So basically just confirming what we all already knew ... never date or give an opportunity to men who use strip clubs. If your fiance requests going to a strip club for a bachelor party = call of the wedding, if his friends suggest it and he doesn't refuse = call off the wedding.

No sane man that actually respects women goes to these places.

I'm American, but I worked in western Europe for a few years recently.
I know that a lot of men there still have a ton of gross views towards women.

But anecdotally, I was surprised at my male (mostly Belgian) coworkers views towards strip clubs quite a few times. Note: I work in an extremely male-dominated engineering field.

I noticed that they would openly express disgust when our (male) American counterparts would come over and ask about strip clubs. They would even shit talk places like Hooters when the American guys would bring them up.

They need to ban it in the US! And everywhere! Free college so women do not feel they have to do those things! It sickens me. I had 2 daughters, left my ex PA and put myself through college while working 2-3 jobs. Not one in a bar or club! It can be done and you can still have your mental and physical health after! I went to a strip club once... I was a libfem in my early 20s, visiting a country with legalized prostitution. I noticed a gay stripbar with a "women's night" on, so I gave it a try.

I find the differences between a male and female strip club striking:

- The most the men undressed was unzipping the pants, but not taking it off. So they were just shirtless.

- They barely used the strip pole, and didn't do any degrading acts on it.

- I could pay more to get a 'private session'.... but a woman would have to be insane to get herself alone with a muscular guy in such a place.

- As far as noticed the women were just joking around, they were not ogling the men. Also, there were male customers there too, so it wasn't really a "women's night".

- And finally... I decided to leave because I got scared of one of the strippers, since he was staring at me too much.

The patriarchal power balance doesn't change...

Watch Nina Unrated on YouTube, she has experienced all these problems as a veteran stripper. She promotes the lifestyle, but she tries to give tips on how to be safe. One of her biggest tips is to come to the club with a full tank of gas, she said one time she drove for 2 hours after someone was stalking her leaving the club! I think there is an addiction to the money that comes with this job, I am not sure why she is still doing this!

Strip clubs are meant for men to come and gawk at women's bodies, right? So why is it such a huge surprise when many strippers report bad behavior and sexual assault? Have you seen they people who visit strip clubs? I wouldn't touch them with a 6 feet long pole. I think this is a matter of bad job security at its core.
