Utah native here, throwaway account.
Polygamist culture (specifically with Crickers, or the FLDS) is some of the most toxic, disgusting, patriarchal shit I’ve ever seen. They keep their people grossly undereducated and prey on children.
I have two girlfriends from high school who left at ages 8 and 10 (all of us are the same age) and they said their mothers had to pack up everything in the middle of the night and run. The reason? Men in their 40’s were talking about “testing them out”. WTF. 🤮🤮
I’m in the medical field; I’ve heard that people tried to get CNA classes started over in Colorado City, a town famous for its polygamous population. They did that for about a year until realizing that the women were learning too much, so they stopped the program. You can’t make this shit up.

I second this. Also, you are going to have a major proof problem when the NVM just denies paternity. Maybe he would have to reimburse the mother after birth is possible, but again, incentive to just run far, far away. Having to get in vitro paternity testing is a risk to the mother and the fetus. Not fantastic outcomes here.

I recently had a related conversation with a man I am seeing (one of a few red flags I'm afraid..): he was telling me about a real concern men, including him, had about women somehow tricking them by getting pregnant. I reacted STRONGLY to this.
Trick men ... for WHAT? You seriously don't need a phd to understand that women always bear the brunt of any pregnancy and child birth, wanted or unwanted, both physically and financially. I suspect it is not actually easy for women to "go after" the biological father of a child for equal financial participation in anything. This article confirms it - Utah the first state to legally obligate bio fathers to contribute to pregnancy costs? Infuriating in a country where health care is for the privileged.
We live in the US, but I am foreign. Does anyone have any more insight into what the legal situation in the states is in these matters? What would a women hypothetically have to gain by "tricking" a man (which opens another can of worms of course on who bears the responsibility of birth control)? I suspect in most cases it's not much more than a lifetime of frustration, but would appreciate some more data to back this up.

Baby trapping is what men do to women. It gives them more power or control over her, especially if she's young or a pickme.
