Funny (as in "Interesting")
I would have gone on the ...
"I would rather chose a boy first, so when the younger sis is in HS and Uni he can defend her from creeps and bad guys bf wannabes"
[–]Teenie34FDS Newbie197 points198 points199 points 5 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link
My ex told me he wanted his oldest to be a boy so he could protect the younger daughter. I said, “protect her FROM WHAT?” When he said, “other boys” I argued that most boys are not so terrible that we need protection from them. Lol! Was I ever wrong. And did I miss out on that “tell” or what? This is the same fucker who got super pissed at me and threatened to kill my roommate’s’ pet.

And did I miss out on that “tell” or what? This is the same fucker who got super pissed at me and threatened to kill my roommate’s’ pet.
:O WTF ?!
And so, now you would consider saying that a red flag or smthg ? :S
[–]Teenie34FDS Newbie79 points80 points81 points 5 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, I was young at the time and truly believed 99% of the human race was good. It was only the rare sociopaths that were bad and I thought I was unlikely to ever run into one, let alone be in a relationship with one. Lesson learned.
[–]Le_Lotus_bleu25 points26 points27 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
No, no. I got that idea from your previous msg.
My question is, if "now", a man says smthng along the lines of.... " I would prefer/like the oldest to be a boy so he could protect the younger daughter from “other boys”
Would you consider it a red flag? (And you think that was a red flag you missed?)
Cause would never cross my mind to consider that a red flag.
I even heard similar things from moms already with that scenario (son/s 1 to 3 years older than their sis)

Personally to me it seems strange if he's overly pessimistic about other men. If he had a good reason (eg one of his close female relationships, like his mother or sister, was abused) I wouldn't bat an eye. However, if he thinks that without any specific life experience to cause him to think that... I'd assume he's projecting about himself ("I'm terrible and would totally prey on a young girl, so all men must be as terrible.")

My older brother told me he really became protective after being in high school locker rooms and hearing how the other guys talk about women. I think guys are more open about how disgusting they are when women aren't around and so they (the older brothers) want to protect us from that.
[–]nowheyroseFDS Newbie31 points32 points33 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I personally think it is a red flag if a guy talks about expectations for his future children that are out of his control. Including their existence.
In this case it kinda screams "I'm gonna be really mad if my partner doesn't give me a boy first" but also "even if I do have a son I'm gonna pressure him to conform to toxic masculine standards"

To me, it's in the same vein as people joking that dad better have the shotgun ready to scare the boys off during his 2yo daughter's teen years because she is "so pretty". It just smacks of male ownership over a woman's body. Because we can't raise girls to make their own decisions & protect their body autonomy themselves? Or raise our boys not to be such jackasses?
Ironically, the most misogynistic man I know towards adult women is also the only one I know who never makes that kind of comments about his daughter & is actually teaching her to handle herself. He's SWAT & started play fighting with her when she was a toddler. She's 5 now & knows how to punch, neck crank, etc, & even beat the crap out of a heavy bag with a night stick.
[–]whatprettygirlwhereFDS Newbie2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think from a man that is a red flag unless we're already on the subject of men's bad behavior. If we're just having a casual conversation and he brings that up out of the blue, I'll be concerned.
That is how my dad talked about boys and he cheated on my mother 6 ways from Sunday. I don't think it's a coincidence.
I would consider it pink flag... I mean what if there will really be boy but will be just pussy like what is that guy gonna do? This crossed my mind at first.

I like how its always men that need to "protect women" from other men. Dad's threatening potential boyfriends, no one is dating my daughter, I know how young men work - gross. Brothers protecting sisters from other boys. Having to pretend you have a boyfriend when a creepy man speaks to you or your boyfriend having to tell him to go away. Its as though a lot of men only respect other men's "NO".

[–]Le_Lotus_bleu7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, that really bothers me too. smh
First, as a young tween/teen when I heard or saw that stuff represented in mass media (movies, shows, etc) I was like... "Nah, you should stand for yourself alone. You are not interested, doesn't matter you don't have a bf. Why are these woman doing that?!"
...couple years later (as a teen) I got to experience it first hand, just why those women did that. : (ofc, only when the way they did it/what they asked was very "pushy" or inappropriate)
I was answering, straight forward, very blunt and firm, without smiling: "I'm not interested." "I don't want to" "Not gonna do it"
"Ohhhhh...! ... you have a bf, ok" :smirk:
Me: (internally: "wtf?! I didn't say/hint that! ") externally: "no, I don't. I just don't care/(whatever I said before)"
And then some take that as a "keep pushing".
Admittedly, those were always safe places/surroundings for me, and I didn't got many of those situations, but I know that for many other women that's not their reality.
(Once I even honestly told a guy "Yeah, I do have a bf , but I still wouldn't be interested if I didn't." lol )

Yeah, but this casts the brother in the role of his sister's keeper and reinforces that men are to be the gatekeepers and police of women's bodies. And I don't just mean this in some abstract political way. My older brother cast himself in this role and was really weird and controlling. It inhibited my ability to take independent steps as a young woman.
[–]IceColdMilkshakeSaltFDS Newbie4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Same with the creepy dads who gatekeep their daughters' sex lives. It's all about control over females and normalizing it.
[–]balleballe111111FDS Newbie2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Absolutely. Like those daddy-daughter chastity dances. Those creep me out so much. Why, just why, is the guy so possessive of his daughter's sexuality? If the parents are worried about teen pregnancy give her proper sex ed and access to birth control. Don't try to present her own dad as some kind of stand in for a boyfriend.
[–]Elisa_LaViudaNegraFDS Newbie27 points28 points29 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Tuh! My only full bio sibling is my big brother. Who offered zero protection or safety against the various creeps and abusers who got to me over the years because he was being bullied himself (he was shy and not super social) and he never cared enough to be a safe person for me to confide in. I see now that he also needed that for himself and neither of us got what we needed. Parents have got to stop projecting entire personalities and roles onto their kids. Misogyny and toxic masculinity hurt everyone.
[–]Aly00psFDS Newbie34 points35 points36 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, where did this "protector" nonsense even come from? My older brothers brought predators into the house and did zilch to reign them in or "protect" me from them.
My eldest brother once told me to put on a bra because his friends were staring at me (r/bigboobproblems). When I told him I was already wearing a bra, he told me to put on another one. 🙄 Apparently that's easier than telling your creepy ass friends not to prey on your preteen sister. And another time when one his friends was trying to get into bed with me at 3am (because he had a bad dreaaaaam), when I was SLEEPING, that was my fault too.

I don’t have any brothers but I have 3 older male cousins who are like brothers and were always super protective of me and the other women in our family. Has this dude never felt protective over the younger boys and girls in his family? Is that why he thinks boys can’t be as “caring”??? I really hope he never has children

I’m the youngest. I have an oldest sister and a middle brother. My sister always seemed bitter about having siblings, and never wanted to babysit for anyone’s kids. We were close enough in age that she didn’t have to watch me and my brother, tho. I ended up becoming the most “caring and helpful one” out of the three of us.

Ugh. I was put in this position as a teenage girl with a brother 10 years younger. I also have a brother 3 years older, but he was never asked to babysit.
I credit this experience with the biggest contribution to me being childfree. This seems to be very common on the childfree sub. If you want grandchildren, do not make your eldest daughter babysit your younger kids.

Not only the oldest daughter but also the oldest cousin of a whole rabble.
I used to get left "in charge" at 8 years old when my Nonna popped to the shop. The other kids were not yet 2, 3, 5 & 6. Seeing how young 8 year olds are now terrifies me to think what could have happened.

My mom started leaving me with my younger sisters when I was 8 and they were 2 and an infant. Who the fuck leaves an 8 year old with an infant? Guess who got to learn how to change a diaper on the fly and then got yelled at for doing it wrong? Fuck adults who use the children in their care as free childcare for the others. I vehemently call out anyone in my social circle who does it with their own kids. It disgusts me.

Yep, same. My mom kept having kids though, like it was a merit badge for making it to the one-year mark with a boyfriend. She would be at work all day, have NVM boyfriends to “babysit” their own kid and us as half-siblings. They’d fuck off to the bathroom or garage to do drugs. So I’d end up watching all my younger siblings starting at the age of 8. Currently subscribed to /r/truechildfree. Hell, I don’t even want pets or plants. I’m so done taking care of other people and things.

I remember watching my siblings while my parents locked themselves in their room to get high together. Its another kind of hell to be internally crying for help from your parents while trying to stop fights, clean, make food, and care for their children, but too afraid to say anything because you know if you knock on that door or don't keep them all quiet enough your dad is going to bust out of his room to scream at and beat you.

My oldest sibling is my half sister from my mom's first marriage and she was basically forced to raise her 5 younger siblings when my parents separated, because my dad only had us on the weekends and our mom had to work so much. She moved out asap when she was like 19 or 20. I'm honestly surprised she went on to have kids of her own after having her childhood stolen from her like that, having to raise a bunch of bratty little half siblings because her PickMe mom wouldn't stop marrying dickheads.

every family I ever observed growing up saw their daughters as built in baby sitters. even if she was the youngest, if the oldest child was male, it was up to her to look after her siblings. it's so fucked. tho I'm an only child, I experienced the same at church when mothers would ask me, a, what, 7/8 year old? to watch their child while they ran to the bathroom or something...even if the child's fucking father was right there...I always said no or my mom would step in, but that left a huge impression on me. other times women would ask me to play w/ their younger kids + my mom would get mad at me when I refused. thank god I did lmfao we love boundaries. anyways, that's why (among other things...like logic) I'm childfree + don't want to be married (unless he meets every standard, which would never happen...still would be childfree in marriage regardless)
and yea he definitely meant harm lmfao
[–]PahapanFDS Disciple9 points10 points11 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
So common in Christian settings. I was babysitting at church and at church family camps from a super young age, changing diapers by 7 and having younger kids left in my care with NO adult supervision. I was only 6 years older than my first infant "ward". Shit's fucked up. And, of course, I was never monetarily compensated.
If I ever have a daughter and some random acquaintance tries to use her as free babysitting I'm going to tell them to fuck off. And if anyone suggests she babysit solo without any adults around before she's an appropriate age I'm going to report them to CPS. You don't make babies watch babies, what the actual fuck is wrong with people.

I see this at church too. Parents will ask older elementary school aged girls to "play" with their preschool aged kids while they socialize. No one ever asks my elementary school aged son to do this, even though he's very polite and very responsible. Not that I would allow it either, but it's just ingrained in people to look for the girls to do this work. And don't even get me started on the fact that the church is super proud to make a public announcement when a high school girl begins volunteering in the nursery...

I get what you’re saying, but parents shouldn’t be expecting their kids to raise the other children. If you can’t handle raising children, don’t have them. I’m the oldest of three, and I’ve been “second mom” for almost my entire life. My brother is asked to watch my sister occasionally, but responsibilities that should fall to my parents fall to me. It’s exhausting. No child should have to raise their siblings

In my sociology class, my professor made damn sure that his students knew that parentified oldest siblings ended up in poverty compared to their younger siblings. They don’t get time to take care of themselves, and I’m sure there’s other issues I don’t understand fully. Fuck this. It’s not your kids job to parent your other kids. I was asked to be an example to my younger sibling. Everything I did my father would criticize because my sister would copy me and I had to be perfect. Also I was in charge of things I didn’t do for myself, like make her eat vegetables. In fairness my our older brother has been asked to babysit us time to time. But the moment my sister was born I was put in charge of her and he was in charge of us both but at the same time he could just ignore us. It was complicated. Never understood it. My sister grew to became a head strong woman and the process was ugly. I was told off because of her. Never did I made any mistakes, had no time.

I really hate the whole idea of older siblings parenting younger ones regardless of gender. As a youngest sibling I experienced how this damaged my relationships with my siblings, because they felt responsible for me so they were controlling and limiting of me. Only a few years apart, we could have been friends, but instead this power dynamic was set up. They didn't have that much more life experience than me, but I felt like all my experiences were preprocessed and spoon fed. When it involves older brothers and a younger sister it teaches both the brother and the sister that a male should be in charge (this is what "protective" is code for) of her body and choices. When it is an older sister it is unfair burden on the older sister. Parents should parent. Siblings should be taught to love and care for each other mutually as equals.

I was at a fucking nude hot springs once and some couple shows up with their young kids, they immediately take a liking to me (as kids usually do with me) and the parents just meandered off to go set up camp or hike or what the fuck ever. I have no idea because they were completely out of sight of me, a stranger, at a public nude hot springs.

Ugh if your parenting strategy is “I’ll just indenture my child to be the new caretaker” , you shouldn’t be a parent.

And so he can use her to look like a born-again, feminist, "good" man.

He meant no harm, but that’s why this type of thought process is so insidious and extremely harmful. It’s expected that a CHILD has to operate in an adult capacity because of their gender. This child doesn’t get to live out the fullness of their childhood. That is traumatic for some girls. and I’m going to speak from the place of a woman of color, this is especially harmful for us because we don’t get to be children past the age of nine or when we get boobs and become a threat. I’ve seen parents go on to have more children than they can handle because they have daughters that they feel entirely comfortable placing the burden of coparent on.

I hate the idea that older siblings, especially girls, are expected to take care of the rest of the family and their siblings, often sacrificing their own childhoods.
I’ve seen it with so many friends growing up, and even my cousins.
I’m an only child and I always just got to be a kid, and I’m so thankful for that.
Meanwhile my aunt had 5 kids in total, with a massive age gap between the first and the others. At 16 my cousin was getting up on school days changing nappies, packing lunches, and basically parenting.
Then last year I saw a YouTube video pop up on “parentification” and it blew my mind.
https://www.newportacademy.com/resources/mental-health/parentification/
I literally sent that article to so many of my friends and family members who experienced it, and they finally felt like their feelings were valid.
If I ever have kids they’ll be my responsibility, not my other children’s. That’s a promise I’ll be making and definitely keeping

Yeah I was forced to stay home all the time and watch my brother when he was younger so they could go out or when they were at work after school/weekends. They didn't want a babysitter because he's diabetic and I know how to take care of him. I'm also 7 years older so I resented him a lot for it. Now my mum wonders why I don't stay in touch with friends from school. Probably because I never got to see them outside of school.

He already gave her a mental illness (codependence) before she is even born. Smh.

It’s true, speaking as the oldest of three. You are trained to be Mommy’s Little Helper.
Studies say that boys who are raised with an older sister become better husbands because they understand women better. Don’t know if it’s true, but my brother is the youngest of two sisters and he’s a chill guy, with his wife and two daughters.

So y’all out here having girls solely to force them to serve you and take care of the extra children you made but don’t feel like raising and you don’t see why we’re offended?

I love how you skipped past all the comments of eldest daughters detailing explicitly this is their reality and then told me I was reaching. Is it crack? Is it crack that you smoke?

I'll probably get downvoted but I had an older sister who did exactly this. But nobody asked it from her, nobody expected it from her.
My older brother didn't give a fuck about either of us. Nobody expected or asked that either.
Meaning to say: I agree it's audacious to expect this from girls, but I also believe it's more likely to shape out that way.

Well first I always daughters. Now I would love to have a son first and then daughters. But we’ll see when it’s time! I might be blessed with only sons. I’ll make sure that they’ll never be like the guys I have had to encounter. Disgraces to society. 🤢
