Here's the imdb page for it, and you can watch the trailer there: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2203939/
From what I can tell, the story is this... A lawyer is married to Leslie Mann, he secretly begins dating Cameron Diaz. Cameron and Leslie accidentally meet and discover his cheating, so they decide to team up and get revenge on him. They try to get him fired from work and they secretly poison him with female hormone chemicals normally only given to a transexual. In the process, they discover that he has been cheating on both of them with an even hotter woman, Kate Upton. They bring Kate into the conspiracy in order to REALLY get him back. Nikki Minaj sings the theme song "He's Goin' Down".
The whole thing seems like women's revenge porn.

Well, yes, that's what might happen. I was more freaking out at the idea that a human being thought this would be funny material for a comedy movie. Maybe if it was supposed to be dark, shocking humor, or something like a cutaway gag on Family Guy it could work. But, just, uggghh...

Slightly different story, that was replacing steroids with estrogen so the guy got all emotional, and it was a comedy.
Had they simply drugged some guy to cause health problems then that wouldn't have been funny.

It's alright when a man does it to another man, but when it's depicted as a woman doing it, all hell is shat.
[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 12 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
No, dipshit. When it's depicted as a man doing it to a man, the reaction is "Oh my god, that's horrible!"
But when it's a woman doing it to a man, it's "Ahahaha bet he had it coming. What did he do?"
Which is horseshit.

It was funny in The Longest Yard, there was no outrage or uproar. Just like there will not be for this (as they're both fake, and done in a comedic way). The actions of persons in a comedic movie should be seen and depicted as fictitious, they're not real. Seeing them as such should not disgust you, as it's meant to just be comedy. IF, however, those actions were taken in a real life scenario, then yes, I would see a problem with it. But as it stands, no. This is called differing opinions, people have them, and not everyone will feel your sense of repression. But thanks for immediately assuming you're better than me! :D

Do you think there's any way you could even make a YouTube video where the roles of this movie were reversed and not have people explode of the misogyny?

[–]tjmburns 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Well, obviously a movie like this about men comically torturing a woman would never get green lighted, the closest I can think of is saving Silverman and it was quite edgy as well as making it clear that the guys were creeps and she escapes and beats the crap out of them. Maybe in this movie the guy will escape and beat up these women to hilarious effect? I mentioned YouTube because even if someone made it backed by no studio, just some silly, independent, online project, there would be articles on wapo gawker Jezebel about how awful it is and there'd be people petitioning it to be taken down because it was threatening or something.
[+]SimianControl 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
That's just dumb to me. Personally I think if a woman wants to hit a man she should be well aware she'll get hit back, but nothing should stop her from a revenge plot against a cheating ex either. Men do it to women all the time (albeit not to the extent of drugging), but there are limits to even that. However, the more you argue a double standard the more of one there is, as is becoming increasingly more defined lately. Men's rights shouldn't be about fictitious movies or a double standard, it should be about taking up for those men who were in actuality wronged because they were a man. For example, rape charges stick for life whether or not you're found innocent, that's more an issue I'm liable to get heated over than a movie meant to make me laugh. Whether it will or not is another thing, Cameron Diaz isn't funny to me.
[–]tjmburns 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
The movie looks like garbage, but I don't really care if it comes out as long as we can effectively change the way culture perceives this kind of violence that it tends to let women get away with and to some extent encourages. Fighting against a movie seems dumb to me, just pointing out what should be a clear double standard and an indication of how not okay we are as a culture with violence against women, but okay with violence against men especially when done by women.
[+]SimianControl 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Movies have depicted many wrongdoings to women as well as men. Movies show rape, murder, a general taking advantage of, (you name it), of women on a more than constant basis. The same as it should for men, in order to reach equality. SOCIETY should know what is right and what is wrong, especially now of all times that everything is getting twisted every which way. I agree with the violence against women part, but to an extent. If a woman wants to punch me, she can get punched by me. End of story. That's how (in my opinion), everyone should see it. I have a few female friends whose mothers told them the same thing. It's not something that will be solved by getting angry over a movie or a website or anything of the sort, it'll be solved when enough people have brought up the fact that if a woman commits violence it's the same as a man. THAT'S equality, and that's what most people want.

I agree with you in not being offended by this. It's a film, likely a comedy, and I don't feel my gender is being attacked.
That said, it still shows a double standard in society, in that a movie with the same premise and the genders reversed would be completely unacceptable. Imagine a film where 2-3 men found out a girl was dating them all, and decided to get revenge on her by slipping her testosterone, etc. No matter how much you called it a comedy, that would not be shown anywhere, and if it did, the men would be the evil antagonists.
It annoys me that this double standard does not occur to people, or maybe they just don't care. But if were okay both ways, then hey, fine by me. I'm not going to watch it, but whatever gets you off...

Cultural attitudes are influenced by media, among other things. If movies say it's ok to secretly give chemicals to a man, ruin his career, and physically hurt (or kill?) a man who falls in love with another woman, women who watch can pick up these lessons. Same with the country song about slashing the tires and keying the truck of her boyfriend, and all the movies where a woman slaps a man. Seeing it over and over in the media can lead women to think this is the right reaction when a guy leaves them or cheats on them in real life.
[+]zeppoleon -15 points-14 points-13 points 12 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link
It's still a movie. Yes it influences society, but I think you're taking it a little too far assuming this movie is somehow saying these actions are OK for girls to do to men and that it encourages it.
This is getting into "video games make murderers" argument. And we all know how stupid that is. Just because a it's in a movie or a video game does NOT mean it is encouraging it. Also most people know the difference between reality and a movie.
[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 12 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
1: Its a massive double standard. Its fine to say that movie sexism is a huge deal when its women being abused, that abuse being "normalised" but when its a man its fine, its just a movie, hey guy, relax!
2: This is very different to the "violent video game" argument. In video games the violence is in response to violence or threat (almost always) ie it normalised nothing but the idea that a violent action leads to violent reaction. Whether thats a positive thing for society is a debate perhaps worth having but its quite different to this. This is normalising that a non-violent betrayal of trust justifies violent, perhaps permanently damaging acts of poison, as well as almost certainly a good few slaps, punches, waif fu along the way, so long as the person being abused is male. Which is already far from absurd, being believed by the majority of women and quite a few men. But if he threw one punch in response, the shit would go thermonuclear.

What about Grand Theft Auto? A game that gives you points for carjacking and murdering innocent pedestrians, and is usually the example given in the "violent video games" argument.
I don't think this movie is any worse than GTA in that respect. People aren't going to get their morals from a movie any more than they would a video game.
[–]JumpJax 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Not one movie. But seeing stuff like that over, and over, and over, and over, and over . . . .
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Games like GTA are the exception, and the debate about violence in games was raging way before GTA came along as its perfect poster child. There was a time when Mortal Kombat was a "National crisis"
[–]haddock420 -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Even if it is an exception (which I don't think it is), why does that matter? It's still relevant to this discussion.
If this movie is a bad influence because some people might get ideas from it and do bad things, can't the same be said of GTA?
Would you oppose GTA in the same way that you oppose this film?
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Not really no because the ideas are very separate.
It will take a pretty warped individual to be influenced into murdering prostitutes for petty cash. Because its massively outside of accepted norms.
Is it massively outside of accepted norms for women to do these things in revenge for perceived slights? Nope. Not even slightly. Making the idea of someone being influenced into it far more realistic, far more dangerous.
To put it in your context - Yes, people can be influenced by movies or games, but the extent of that influence is not infinite. It is pretty much impossible to "influence" a healthy individual to break societies greatest taboos. Its pretty fucking easy to influence someone to do things which are already tacitly accepted within large parts of society, particularly when they're adult sized children operating purely on feelz.
So no, i would not oppose one so much as the other, because one is not as dangerous or insidious as the other.
[–]haddock420 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Fair point. I still disagree (I don't think people are influenced as much as you say), but I can see where you're coming from.
Just curious, how do you feel about Nine to Five?
Not sure if you've seen it but it's pretty much the same idea as this movie. It's been a while since I saw it, but I recall they put rat poison in his coffee and kept him tied up in their bedroom for weeks, among other things.
Also, how would you feel about a movie with the genders reversed (i.e. a movie where guys find out a girl's cheating and pull nasty revenge tactics on her)? Would it be just as unacceptable as this movie?
Not trying to be argumentative, just wondering what you think.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
It's still a movie.
if the roles were reversed in the film and it was a bunch of men scheming revenge on a cheating woman, how do you think the majority of women would react? What would happen is an army of raging Feminazis would adamantly protest and bash the movie for how blatantly sexist it is in a split second.
Because it's a guy who gets attacked by vindictive women in a supposed "comedy" (who apparently deserves the abuse coming to him because of his gender), you're basically saying men don't have any right to make any fuss over this evident discrimination because it's an accepted social norm to bash and attack men for comedic purposes?
[–]haddock420 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Would they be justified in doing that? I don't think they would, it's just a movie.
Which is why we shouldn't be doing the same thing over this movie, it'd make us just as bad as the RadFems.
[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 12 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link
No, it's not "just a movie" and it kind of irritates me how you're stating that so nonchalantly. If you think this movie won't have any negative impact on most of it's female audience then you're just being ignorant.
All movies have a some influence on our society and which social norms are accepted. This movie only tell it's female audience that it's perfectly ok to attack and kill men if they do anything trivial that they might find upsetting or emotionally threatening in any way.
Especially women with an irrational vendetta against men would get ideas from a movie that blatantly celebrates violence against a man specifically by women just because of his unfaithfulness...
EDIT: It's just a movie, it's a commercial, it's a TV show etc. It's part of the same media that promotes false gender stereotypes. These are powerful tools that that dictate what should and what shouldn't be social norms. In this case, this sexist movie is promoting misandry and violence against men by women.
[–]haddock420 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I agree that movies impact society, but this isn't a propaganda video, it's a form of entertainment that people know is fiction.
This movie only tell it's female audience that it's perfectly ok to attack and kill men if they do anything trivial that they might find upsetting or emotionally threatening in any way.
This is ridiculous. You're making it sound like the movie producers are intentionally trying to subvert women into becoming misandrists and even murderers.
Do you think the women watching this comedy will think "Man that's a great idea, I'll totally poison my husband with female growth hormones, that'll show him?"
No, only a few crazy RadFems are gonna think that, and if we tried to censor everything that might make a RadFem go crazy, we'd be living in a pretty puritanical world right now.
In this case, this sexist movie is promoting misandry and murder of men.
This movie doesn't promote murder any more than The Godfather promotes organized crime.
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 12 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
I see you like to use red herrings and totally make up a groundless argument based on your false assumptions. Casually brushing off the obvious sexism towards men in the media as if it's hardly a big deal isn't going to prove your argument.
You're also twisting my words. I never said it's some taboo conspiracy in Hollywood among producers to make sexist movies. What I'm saying is that its an accepted social norm and blatantly sexist to harm men for whatever reason a woman sees fit in the media. it's fine to harm a male character for infidelity but it's totally sacrilegious to harm a female character who's essentially guilty of the same thing...
I can see you're not understanding my simple words so I'll let you go. Take care.

[–]JumpJax -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's a bit different. We are constantly told that murder is bad even before we pick up video games, and more so after we do.
The argument here, is that they aren't being told no. Wash, rinse, repeat, and entire generations can eventually believe that slapping men is okay when they ask her on a date.
[–]moonphoenix 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A movie about paternity fraud would be something. But I highly doubt it will ever be a comedy where the "father" and the (let's say) clueless sperm donor find out the truth, get together and plot against the wife. All while the audience cheers and awaits her well deserved fate.
[–]TracyMorganFreeman 17 points18 points19 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
There was the movie "The Kids Are Alright", wherein a lesbian couple ends up meeting the sperm donor for their children-because they seek him out, wanting to know who their father is- and one of the women cheats on the other with him.
The man professes he's fallen for her and asks to leave with him, and she gets angry with him for not being understanding, and then seemingly the two women bond over their mutual dislike of him and wanting to stick together for the sake of the kids.

1.
The story of a husband who suspects his wife of adultery, and sets out to track down the other man in her life.
Not revenge against the women, pretty explicitly.
2.
Christine and Richard are a successful married couple. She works in a big office and he is a professor at a nearby university. She is bored, complaining that her husband is always so busy with work that he has no time for her. While at a party, she stumbles into a room by accident to see a man kissing a woman's legs. (This clue helps solve the mystery). Afterwards, she visits her husband in his office at the university, where she sees a young pretty blond student in a short skirt revealing more of her thighs to her husband, hoping to get a better mark. Christine is suspicious, so decides to go on a trip with her friend to another city, where they attend a male strip joint. During the performance, Christine's friend slips Christine's room key into the stripper's underwear, who pays her a visit that night. She has an affair with him, and returns to her office, where the stripper gives her a dirty phone call to which she responds to. She meets her lover under the docks and has another affair with him. Afterwards, she goes to his motel room, has yet another affair, and tries to get to know him, to which he refuses to even reveal his name. Rejected, she goes back to her husband, and they do it in the hot tub. Afterwards, the police drop by, saying the stripper was killed and there was a gun with her fingerprints left behind. She is confined to jail, and asks her brother for help. Her brother goes back to her house, and sees a strange man kissing her best friend's legs. When the man gets up, he sees its her husband.
I didn't see the part where the cheated on man blew his cheating wife's brains out.
3.
A married couple hold their boss hostage in their apartment and force him to watch their sex escapades to rejuvenate their failing marriage.
About some couple's rapey voyeurism.
Not even remotely the same.
Similar scenarios(not counting your example that was nothing at all like the OP movie, and in each one the women never suffers, but the person she cheats with is, the man who we could actually assume didn't even know they were sleeping with someone's wife.
Fact of the matter is this movie(the OP) is nothing but women's revenge porn, another tired story about grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrlllll powurrr and sticking it to a man.
It's petty.

I dislike the double standard that violence against men is glorified but violence against some is some terrible thing that you can't even joke about, and if you dare laugh at a joke about violence against women then you are a mysogonist. But I think the most important issue for mrm is getting equal treatment in family courts. I don't think we should sink to the petty level of radfems and try to call a boycott on every piece of media we find offensive.

You're right OP, it's not funny, but that's largely due to the fact that it's just a humorless joke rather than a joke reliant on biased interpretations of violence.
[–]Zombie_Dog 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
The real test is if you did a complete gender swap of the intended scenario and see how people react.
"Three guys find out that a girl is cheating on them and they conspire physical and emotional abuse against her to teach her a lesson."
I can't imagine the uproar at a plot as hurtful and inappropriate a subject as domestic abuse being portrayed as a comedy. But I guess calmly confronting a person like an adult about cheating isn't going to make 20th Century Fox any money.
Always good to see domestic violence still being used for entertainment long past it being funny anymore.

It was funny back in the 1950s. You know, back when skin color determined what water fountain you could use or baseball team you could play on, and Elvis Presley's hips was controversial.
That's all I hear when ever stupid octogenarians talk about "the good old days". Yeah "good" if you were a white man, otherwise, not so much.

[–]ToraZalinto 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The Vow is also a good movie for this as well. SPOILERS AHEAD. When the lead female (who is suffering from amnesia) finds out that her father cheated on her mother years ago with her then best friend she questions her mom and asks (not a verbatim qoute)
"Why didn't you leave him?". The mother responds with "I almost did. I had everything packed and was ready to just take you kids and walk out the door. But then I thought about the house and our lives together. And all the things that your father had done right over the years. How could I leave him over the one thing he did wrong?"
I was so FLOORED seeing this attitude come out of hollywood that I almost didn't believe it.
[–]alexlj -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I'm going to disagree there - Love Actually was not particularly great in its depiction of women (e.g. scenes with the American girls, Aurelia, Natalie and the american child were things to be chased after). I didn't feel it was mysognist, but it was definitely much more one sided. There are better, more constructive rom-coms out there which would present more honest representations of men and women.
I agree with the less than stellar portrayal of American women, but one does have to remember it was a British film, and it's not exactly a stretch how shallow many young American women are with regards to foreign accents.
Nonetheless that arc is an incredibly minor portion of the film. I'm not completely disregarding that flaw of course, but I do think it's one of the better romcoms out there.
[–]alexlj 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Of course we could argue that most of the women aren't really that particularly well represented, save for Laura Linney's character and Alan Rickmans' wife (that dejected sulk at the end really captured the sentiment toward marriage roles).
As far as romcoms go, I'm no expert - It's just never been one of my favourite genres - but I just thought I should point out that there are a number of representational flaws in that movie that should hinder it from becoming a model for future romcoms.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Maybe it already exists, but I would support a page, that just turns all these kind of things around to see how people would feel about it.
In this case, take Samuel L. Jackson, Brad Pitt and Ryan Goslin; change the poster to "The Other Man" and "She'll never know what hit her", leave that weapon there...it's nice; and change the synopsis to a story about guy finding out he isn't the only one, who teams up with cuckold plots a revenge.
How would everybody like some male on women violence made into a comedy?

On the "Today" show last November, Katie Couric suddenly deviated from perkiness and asked a jilted bride, "Have you considered castration as an option?" Nobody seemed to object. Fred Hayward, a men's rights organizer, says: "Imagine the reaction if Matt Lauer had asked a jilted groom, 'Wouldn't you just like to rip her uterus out?'" The double standard is rooted in identity politics and fashionable theories about victimization: Men as a group are oppressors; jokes that oppressors use to degrade the oppressed must be taken seriously and suppressed. Jokes by the oppressed against oppressors, however, are liberating and progressive. So while sexual harassment doctrine cracks down on the most harmless jokes about women, very hostile humor about men keeps expanding with almost no objections.

Black snake moan
[–]kragshot 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Black Snake Moan was not so much about abusing women as it was about healing and redemption from said abuse. Christian Ricci was playing a nymphomaniac (due to childhood abuse) heading down a dark road and Samuel Jackson's character was a man who had been down that road and decided to try to redeem her and himself by saving that girl.
Everyone got hung up by Ricci being chained up in the house. But Jackson never once abused her or even touched her sexually, even though Ricci tried several times to seduce him in order to get her way. The violence that Ricci suffered in the film was key to the story of her finding her way back to healing and loving herself.

Exactly. The suffering that the woman endures is part of the story, but the story is how the woman recovers and survives the ordeal.
The guy in this movie is not meant to recover from what happens to him in the story. That is the difference.

I don't particularly agree with OP, but as another user posted, the movie is about a man who cheats on his S/O and then cheats on both of them with another woman. The three women get together and turn him into a gender anomalous blob because he had a problem with sex. They don't try to rehabilitate him, they don't feel guilty for enabling him. I don't know how carefully you read the comments here, but we're not exactly shouting "censor this filth!"
Denouncing double standards and male disposability is kind of central to the MRM. From what I understand, the people objecting to this film are not offended that free artistic expression exists, but that misandry and female-on-male violence are so broadly accepted.
I won't lie, it bothers me that the attitudes in this film are so common. It bothers me that a big-budget film like this can make it all the way through production without the investors pulling out. It bothers me that there will be no media shitstorm about it.
I won't call to censor it, but I'll be damned if I'm not going to call out this shit when I see it.

Yeah this movie just looks like the death of Cameron Diaz's career and the start of a mediocre one for Kate Upton.
This isn't funny because its fucking stupid.
Ok first off seams to me another shitty movie that is going to rely on "stars" to get its fame.
Now I personally I think if you don't like a movie don't go and see it and that is that. Don't go the feminist way and try and bash it because you think its something that its not (check Blurred lines)
2nd from the trailer I think this movie is going to be more about the 3 girls being so different and having to "work together" and I'm almost sure at the end the guys is going to be ok, heartbroken and alone but I doubt any physical damage will be with him at the end of the movie.
Regardless of this I for one do not care about movies and think they have insignificant impact on societies view, or at least on the healthy individuals who can make the difference between movies and reality.
But if you are going to be upset about it at least wait and watch the movie, however I still advise you guys as I advise anyone about anything similar. If you don't like something or do not agree with it, just don't pay attention to it.
The only real problem I see is that feminist who claim to be for equality will surely not have a problem with this movie which is absolutely normal for a lying and hypocritical movement like feminism
TL:DR
Its just a movie, as I've said about feminism before I think its more important to focus on real stories rather then movies, which again every healthy individual can make the difference.
Wait and see it before jumping to conclusions.
The premise is waaaaaaaaaaaaay over the line. Wow. I used to like Cameron Diaz, but fuck this.

Well... let's not be those bitches who cry "THAT'S NOT FUNNY" all the time. I would like to live in a world where both jokes aren't censored.

While the MRM should never be in support of any kind of censorship, this movie is a good example to be kept in one's back pocket in case of an argument about media sexism.
In an alternate universe this movie would be a "lighthearted comedy" about a guy slipping his girlfriend some abortion pills after he discovers she slept with another guy.
[–]Bodertz -2 points-1 points0 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

[–]FredAsta1re 9 points10 points11 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

MRAs don't want the right to assault women. So let's just pop that little bubble for you right now.
[–]Bodertz -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This is a movie. Let's not read more into my comments than exists.
I'm bothered that the reverse doesn't. Not because I want it to exist (Ideally neither would exist), but because this clearly illustrates the double standard in media today.
[–]Bodertz 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Finally someone who can understand the difference between real life and fiction!
Ideally neither would exist
Why is that? I think it's possible for some fun stories to come out of that kind of thing. This movie, probably not, but still. For instance, I enjoyed Hard Candy (There were more than two colours!) despite me disagreeing with her actions if she did them in real life.
The way things work for me is that if the main character is wronged in some way by another character, I give them a lot more leeway than if it were a real situation. Because revenge is fun. I like fun.

How is erectile dysfunction or having a small penis can be made fun of and often used as an insult where as any comment on women's body is considered uncouth. Btw, I like your user name and I am also just like you an ordinary guy.
Thanks! I'm actually quite more than an ordinary guy. I'm just good at hiding it I guess. The name came from the fact that I feel that I have been quite average for my whole life, but I only realized in the past couple years that my peer group is a bit above average.
As for the joke, I was making a joke about how edtv and the truman show are similar. I never really understood penis jokes, though my type of humor tends to be more highbrow. It is. Women are the physically weaker sex so them abusing us is funny but not the other way around. It's not fair but it's life. It's best to take this shit with a smile and leverage our strengths instead of being keyboard warriors, never achieving anything
[–]Wordshark 9 points10 points11 points 12 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link
Look, I get what you're trying to say but you're being pretty fucking insensitive to the men on this board who have been abused by women. It doesn't matter if you're twice as big as a woman; if you both know that the police will always side with her, and even trying to defend yourself can land you in prison, she's pretty much got carte blanche to whale on you.
[+][deleted] -16 points-15 points-14 points 12 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link
I say the same thing to abused men as I say to abused women. Unless you were held captive you have no one to blame but yourself. You stayed because you needed the abusive relationship more than you wanted to leave it. There is only one way to deal with undesired situations. Change it, remove yourself from it or accept it.
[–]AlexReynard 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I was abused as a kid, so that's my excuse, but I will admit that I hold myself to this standard now that I'm an adult. It's blunt as fuck, but I can't disagree with it.
[+][deleted] -7 points-6 points-5 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
As a child you are not in charge of yourself. Both legally and in actuality. You could not leave so the fault is not at all yours. You of all people should know that life isn't fair but only you can really improve your status. You've been through much more than the average MR lurker and these guys complain about having to pay for dates.
It's not that they are wrong, it's that they can either take dating or leave it. Take the world or leave it.
It takes real strength to live with what you got through. But again, child abuse isn't a gender issue.
[–]maako1328 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link
Well at least you are consistent.

I feel like the more downvotes I get, the more I'm saying something ppl know is true but don't want to face up to.
Pretty sure that's just the narcissism.
If it was bullshit you wouldn't even bother with the finger click
If people didn't care they wouldn't bother, but in fact we do care.
And we don't like your shitty opinion, so downvotes for you.
[+][deleted] -6 points-5 points-4 points 12 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link
My shitty opinion is the reality. Otherwise society would get upset about that poster instead of laugh at it. Majority of men and women alike. Be mad at me if you want. I understand your frustration, I'm just telling you it is what it is
[–]FredAsta1re 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
Or you're being insensitive to people you don't understand. I myself haven't been in that position . . . However I have something you lack, that is empathy.
In a perfect world, sure, emotionally damaged people could just up & leave a abusive relationship without a qualm & there would be absolutely no consequences & their world would become perfect all the time everytime.
Much like in a perfect world AIDS doesn't exist, Racism, Sexism, discrimmination in general doesn't exist.
However, if you think any of that is real and/or possible then you are deusional.
If you lack basic emotional tools like empathy & can't understand anyone but yourself . . . Then fine, but please don't then come here and antagonize the people that do & more importantly the people in these situations. It's downright rude.
[+][deleted] -5 points-4 points-3 points 12 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
I understand these people. I've been in an abusive relationship. I'm not talking about a perfect world, I'm talking about reality. If you are an adult you have legal rights. If you can leave the relationship but don't, that's your fault.
Obviously the abuser is in the wrong, but only your low self esteem kept you in the abusive relationship.
So many defenseless people suffer more and you don't seem to empathize with them.
[–]FredAsta1re 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Steady on, you don't need to go on the offensive here, especially when I already asked you not to be rude.
low self esteem kept you in the abusive relationship.
Shit, really? No way.
You seem to be very dismissive of other factors in peoples lives apart from the 2D caricature of 'Person in abusive relationship'. Which is very surprising from you also saying you've been in an abusive relationship, as you're acting as & saying things quite contradictory to the many others (M&F) I've known to be in the same position & worse.
So many defenceless people suffer more . . . you don't empathise . . .
I'm sorry, I should've de-railed our conversation about domestic abuse to tell you about the absolute poverty rife throughout many parts of the world. To tell you of the STD-riddled child prostitutes stolen from their familes & forced to work, of the depressed, the weak, the poor. I'm very sorry that I didn't tell you about all that in my comment which obviously means I can't empathise with anyone else & I hate people who suffer. Obviously I was in the wrong there, so glad you've finally exposed my greatest character flaw & now I can live with myself.
Really?
:/

My shitty opinion is the reality. Otherwise society would get upset about that poster instead of laugh at it. Majority of men and women alike.
Exactly. I mean, if there was a REAL example of a woman, say, poisoning and mutilating her husband, people would be enraged by it. They definitely wouldn't be laughing.
Oh, wait.....
Sorry. My Mistake.
But I'm sure Mr. Becker understood that he was stronger and took his mutilation with a smile.

See this is where your irrationality shines. What difference would it make to him if society had a more objective view of gender issues? If someone did something completely unexpected like this, how would anyone even prepare? And how would recognition of female violence towards men help him get his dick back, dickhead?
[–]shikima81 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well with the double standards clouding everyone's vision, we don't know what difference it would make, now do we? But sitting down and taking it as we do now and as you advocate continuing only serves to pour salt in the wounds.
And yes, I'm aware I'm a dickhead for suggesting that men receive any empathy. I just have this asinine idea that men are human beings, is all. Sorry that offends you so much.
You overestimate reddit.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 12 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
Leverage our strengths? So if they hit me, I should hit them back?
[+][deleted] -10 points-9 points-8 points 12 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
No, as a man you hold a lot of advantages. For example, you're not, self admittedly, hormonal and irrational 1/5th of the year
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 12 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
I have PTSD. I am irrational 5/5 of the year.
[+][deleted] -9 points-8 points-7 points 12 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
I'm assuming you had the misfortune of going through a war. This isn't a gender issue. Society should take care of it's vets
It's not called Post-War Stress Syndrome.
[–]RIP_BigNig 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Haha, oh wow.
[+][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Again, I think I'm going to give up on society and just start taking advantage of people instead of trying to enlighten them.
Yes men die in wars on a much larger scale than women, but society not taking care of Veterans is not a gender issue. Male and female soldiers are neglected. In fact female soldiers get raped, and murdered and the military passes this shit off as a suicide.
This is not a gender issue. Divorce laws as gender issues. Conviction sentences are gender issues. Consequences for sexual abuse of children are gender issues. Neglected veterans are a gender neutral social issue that happens to hurt men much more because the army vastly consists of men.
[–]RIP_BigNig 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I was actually just surprised that you concluded all PTSD must be a result of war.
[+][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It's by far the most likely reason numbnuts
[–]RIP_BigNig 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No, it's not. An incredibly small percentage of 'trauma' (which is by definition the source of the condition) is experienced by combatants during war; it simply manifests itself more noticeably in this group of people. In reality, trauma includes events such a sexual assault, serious injury, the loss of a loved one, etc. So no, it's not by far the most likely reason at all.
