I know it's impossible to define the average woman and there are ultimately 4 billion answers to this question, but in any case it seems pretty unarguable that there's a fine balancing act at hand here.

As far as a prospective relationship is concerned being too aloof and cold wears thin after a while - most women want affection and adoration and protection from a man... but being even midly overprotective, overattentive and tender can backfire and come across as incredibly unattractive.

I think it's fair to say that this dynamic equilibrium shifts quickly as the relationship progresses.

Some say that as long as a man isn't smothering a woman with attention, checking on her 10 times per day, stands strong to his opinions, doesn't convey jealousy, and maintains some traditionally masculine edge then he's free to be as chivalrous and tender as he wants (although we all know guys who are guilty of all these behaviours and still do well with the ladies).

Anyway, what are your thoughts?

Better yet got any practical advice?
