So, first thing's first. These percentages are meaningless in a vacuum. We need to establish context. 20% of what. Men in the world? Men in the U.S.? Men in the U.S. who fall within a specific woman's desired age range? Men within this woman's desired age range who are also within her proximity and single? Who gets the final say on the sample population that this "rule" is supposed to apply to?

In middle school when I was considered dorky and awkward I thought there was something cute about maybe 50% of the guys.

Then the first guy who ever showed interest in me was super cute, imo an 8/10. Ever since then I only find guys who look like him cute. My mustache man looks very similar to him. That guy was show stoppingly attractive imo, definitely NOT average like everyone else says. He is an 8 or a 9.

For different women selection criteria are different. You might be in "top 20%" for some of them, but in "bottom 80%" for others. So your goal is to find those who see your traits attractive and not bother with everybody else.

No. It doesn’t add up. If you think a busy, successful, good looking guy could have five or six women that they’re stringing along you should try having one or two. The tendency for hot women (not an absolute) is to be fairly high maintenance. Try having two girlfriends and tell me how that goes. Hiding in the shitter with your phone and making excuses why you’re not available and not answering. You can’t keep it up and it won’t take long before you don’t even feel like it. The gist of the theory has some truth in it, but the numbers are way off. It’s not even close to as bad as they make it sound. Don’t get hopeless.

It’s true on dating apps and mostly due to apps being mostly men. If roles were reversed men would be swiping on less women and going more for the top tier of women.

It does have some spillover to real life as some women on apps may shrug off an average guy as they have a catalog of men on their phone. But I think most people would prefer to meet in real life, which is why most couples you see are around the same level of attractiveness, self improvement and self realization.

If you don’t want to compete in an 80/20 market put in more effort in real life instead of relying on swipe apps that are designed for you to fail.

No. It's just red pill nonsense to blame their loneliness on women ("it's not my fault, women are all chasing the top 20% of men"). The fact that nobody agrees what the 80/20 rule actually refers to (sometimes it's attention, then it's attraction, other times it's casual sex, other times it's dating, etc.) is proof that it's just bullshit. The origin of it (the OKCupid survey) explicitly debunks it, or at least that variation of it.

In business, 20% are said to do 80% of work

This is just stating that the top men are with a lot of women or could be if they wanted

For online dating yes this is true. Online dating basically takes all the aspects of a person and reduces them into looks and height because those are the only things that can easily be ascertained because she sees your picture and height is listed. Because of this, the average guy is going to have a hard time on online dating.

Women view online dating as a numbers game just like men where even way below average women are often going for the top 20% of men. The problem is that getting sex from these men is different than getting commitement.

In person, I think that they women going for mostly the highly desirable men is happening, but to a lower extent. Meeting someone in person allows women to see many aspects of a guy that online dating does not. The benefit is that thinks like personality, humor, charisma, shared interests, being a decent person- all can make a woman be interested in a guy that she would never have considered online.

The issue is when men who are not having success on dating apps just keep using them thinking something will magically change. These men need to get off the apps and acquire different skills and meet women in the real world

I think that online dating is inherently very 80:20 because there is a self selection. Women with very high standards are going to continue to be on these apps trying to find someone better than her and thus is not likely to do so because a person better than her also would have better options to date than her. The result is that women with reasonable standards will find someone in real life or on the apps and get into a relationship and no longer be on the apps.

The result is the apps are full of the demanding women and women who cannot succeed in relalationships for whatever reason (mental issues, bad personality, cheating, etc). As you get older this problem becomes worse.

The 80/20 rule is not scientific and is obviously ridiculous. Most average women are marrying average men which would not happen according to the 80/20 rule..

80/20 is clearly false in that rule is designed to make below average men who want to believe that they are average find a way to explain why women are rejecting them.

Now, perhaps you could make a case for a similar 60/40 rule. If you change the numbers from 80/20 to 60/40 the rule could actually be real. 80/20 it’s clearly not supported by what is happening at 60/40 might fit with what is happening.

Online yes. In practice, yes but not at that extreme yet. I was fortunate enough to experience dating pre internet when face to o face interactions were normal. Relationships developed through common interests and getting to know someone. This is less true now. Social media has corrupted women, it’s a tragedy.

No, everyone is looking for a partner they want whether they're in the "top" anything or not. Some people are more commonly considered attractive than others, there are both men and women who look very hot or are popular/famous and you could say there's some hot competition for, but certainly there's no objective scale everyone must follow. The vast majority of people who both try and aren't chasing some unrealistic standards will find relationships pairing up in an assortative manner. No men are competing for women they see as less hot than four fifths of the population, they might begrudgingly accept at best.
