So i was in a top frat, still sorto am (close alumni).

There were two other fraternities and we rigged elections and ran the school (around 50k undergrads at our college). Our frat was known as the douchebag gym rats who have coke problems and don't know what condoms are.

We didn't have any brothers rape a girl, ever.

The closest it gets is when a brother is shit faced and a girl is shit faced and he raw dogs her shit pussy, because period, on one of the slam mattresses... they raped each other. Then she freaks out because she has a boyfriend, but she didn't seem to mind when she was grinding on a pledge and being the make out queen.

Thats why we have police report papers sitting around, so if a girl starts to freak out the brother can press rape charges before she can.

When I see four men I know get expelled from colleges over the years for rape/sexual assault allegations only to have every single one of those allegations proven to be false... I have my doubts that rape "culture" is real. Have there been lots of cover-ups of rapes? Yes. Have there been lots of false allegations over the years? Yes. Will real victims be more willing to come forward? Hopefully. Is rape systemic in our culture? Well, you're asking reddit so you won't get any super reliable answers here, but my guess would be no.

The current Hollywood purge doesn't indicate a rape culture, it indicates a culture in which powerful, famous, talented and wealthy men use their power, fame and money to procure sex partners for themselves and for their various and sundry fetishes and kinks.

Think about this: for every person coming forward claiming 'unwanted' sexual conduct, there was at least two or three who engaged in willing sexual conduct with them. There were a couple of women who probably got off on watching Louis CK jerk off. There were probably many, many gay men Kevin Spacey and George Takei propositioned who said 'you bet'. Same with Weinstein re propositioning young starlets, and same with just about every other man connected with Hollywood.

Rape culture exists. It isn't just about rape. It's about aggressive sexuality in general. Take a look at how sexual our culture is and how common it is for people to use other people in that manner. The great majority of women have at least a handful of sketchy stories and while I don't think people think this is okay...most people don't say anything about it.

When you're looking at police violence, you find out that a small group of policemen are usually responsible for the vast majority of the violence -- the proverbial bad apples. But the reason police violence goes unchecked and victims rarely receive justice is because the entire police department has a culture that enables and protects those perpetrators. There's a feeling of "us vs them" and "protect your own" and "don't do anything that will make life harder for the department" that translates into stuff like paying off multiple settlements for separate incidents involving one cop and not firing him.

Rape culture is basically that, but swap cops for men and civilians for women.

There's also a lot of child abuse going on. I don't think anybody is okay with that. In fact, child molesters are known to be targets for violence in prison. Not even criminals are okay with them.

I remember there being a study that someone did with rape convicts a while back. A lot of them suffered childhood sexual and physical abuse - that suggests psychological/emotional damage as the root cause. What about the others who didn't? I'm not sure, but fetishes are quite a bit more common among men than they are among women (that's what they say in the book "A Million Wicked Thoughts"). I can't help but think that some men have rape fantasies (where they are the aggressor, not the victim, like women who have those fantasies). I have to imagine that Bill Cosby had a sleeping fetish or something along those lines.

I'm still skeptical that "rape culture" is a real thing.

A lot of men don't realise that their behaviours are innapropriate, that's the problem. Very serious cases of violent rape by a stranger is not all that common and everyone knows that it's wrong, pretty much.

The whole 'teach men not to rape' thing has more to do with the greyer areas; a lack of consent, verbal or non-verbal, is not always seen as a warning sign. The idea that you can't rape a spouse. Thinking that, because a girl was into you earlier, they're totally up for it. That because they are wet, or had an orgasm, they consented. Not taking 'no' seriously and seeing it as playing hard to get. Performing acts that were not agreed to (stealthing, surprise anal, etc.).

It's a wide spectrum but it can be surprising how many of these things happen. And, of course, there's the belief that men can't be raped by women...

But rape culture also includes victim shaming. She deserved it because she was drunk, scantily dressed, and so on.

These things aren't imagined. Women are definitely guilty of a lot of the same things and often contribute to this 'culture' as well.

From what I've heard, a shocking number of women have experienced abusive, intimidating, entitled, harassing and dangerous male behaviour. Almost every woman I know has stories about getting groped at a party, catcalled while walking down the street, get their rejection ignored, etc.

So yeah, I think it's safe to say it's systemic. We definitely live in a culture that downplays rapey male sexual behaviour and the fear and uncomfortableness it can cause.

Men in positions of power get away with doing shit that isn't acceptable for normal people. They get away with doing things that go against regular social norms, like rape, child molestation, and so forth and so on. These rich guys raping men, women, and children just shows rich and powerful people are allowed to get away with stuff. It doesn't mean that this is a rape culture.

There is info that we aren't privy to that put many rape cases in a gray area, so it is foolish to be so vociferous in attacks of supposed rapists
