First off, I'm a firm believer in shutting the lid so you don't spray shit water everywhere, but I've never understood the misery of needing lower the seat. You never hear men moaning about how they have to raise the seat to pee, yet women constantly complain about the genital tyranny of men who raise the seat to have a piss. It can't be because they object to touching the seat, because theyre insisting that men touch the toilet seat, then their dick, then the toilet seat once more. This is not only putting a large burden of seat touching on men, it also ensures that any woman who engages in sexual acts with a man will have a toilet-seat dick to deal with. You would think that women would take to lifting toilet seats to ensure that they don't have to deal with the fact they wish to engage with a penis belonging to a man who has handled a toilet seat shortly before handling his member. Bathrooms don't come with dick washers, all the toilet seat germs are there to stay on something that you might be licking later. Yet they rather moan that men, who presumably have taken this fact of genital hygiene into account, have courteously left the seat raised so that they can present as clean a member as possible for their important lady. Here's the perspective I'm constantly waiting to have to deliver when using unisex public workplace bathrooms . The toilet seat should always be up. Why? Because despite how good a man thinks his aim is, there is always going to be splashback - sometimes just from the power of the flush. Further, in the real outside world of public restrooms (bars, clubs, restaurants, etc)women will often do the hover which has the same effect. A seat that is always up means a seat that doesn't get wet.

PS Except at home where there is usually a lid. The seat should be down because flushing puts particles in the air and I don't want that flying around and settling on my toothbrush or towel or whatever.

Everyone should leave the bathroom with the seat DOWN. Here’s why. There’s three things that most bathrooms will be used for: men peeing, women peeing and men and/or women pooping. Only one of those things is something the seat should be up for. Hell, I know dudes who like to sit when they pee, so let’s just say that a relatively small percentage of common toilet use involves the seat being up.

So? Just put it down when you’re finished if you put it up before you start. Be considerate to the statistical probability of the next person to use the bathroom.

I always put both seat and lid down. Mythbusters once did a test where they put some fluid in a toilet in a bathroom that shows up under a black light. They flushed it with both lid and seat up, lid up and seat down, and with both lid and seat down. The results were flushing with the lid up, doesn't matter about the seat, you're spraying fecal matter and urine all over your bathroom, only with the lid down do you keep your bathroom clean. Under my understanding, if you are the one that might/does make the lid dirty/splash pee on it, should be the one to make sure the next person using the toilet doesn't have an antihigienic accident with his previous body residues. If you are capable of peeing without your urine/genitals touching the lid, you don't have to touch the lid. If you are gonna cause disconformity for the next user, take responsability for your actions.
