If you try not to give a fuck, you still give a fuck. To really not give a fuck, you have to truly not give a fuck. This is one of the few things where you can't just fake it until you make it. First, you have to love yourself. Like actually love yourself. Second, you have to be firmly self confident. And finally, you have to have a life purpose you truly care about. When you really give a fuck about something you're passionate about, you'll realize you don't need to give a fuck about anything else. And then you won't. So figure out and clearly define your core values, dedicate your life to those, and everything else will fall into place.

This is a picture from fittit. It is a picture of a man deadlifting 500 pounds.

Look at this shoes. Are those not a lamest looking shoes you ever saw? What cool guy would be caught dead wearing those shoes?

Answer is, any guy who is truly cool, instead of wanting to look cool. Anyone who truly is doing something, instead of being a try-hard or a wannabe. He did not wear those shoes to look cool. He wore those shoes to deadlift 500 pounds. Nobody can say jack shit to him about his shoes, unless they, too, can deadlift 500 pounds. (And nobody who can would say a damn thing.)

The principle, then, is that you are there to do what you are there to do. You are not there to worry about what others think about you doing it. Poseurs dress to impress. Winners do whatever it takes to get the job done.

(Incidentally, those shoes are called Vibram FiveFingers. I have a pair, and they are awesome. I don't use them for deadlifting, though. I deadlift barefoot.)

From the experiece of wathcing my close friend try to "not give a fuck", i think it's better, (and possibly the real point behind "fight club", (i wouldn't know, i havent read/seen it.)) to give few fucks. As others have said, be yourself and accept and be pleased with yourself. He's tried to reinvent himself while not giving fucks, and now he's seriously fucked his life over as a result. he's lost almost everything, and i'd hate to have it happen to someone else. just relax, take things as they come, and be your own confident man.

What can one do if they wish to not give a fuck?

Take up meditation. Learn to clear your mind and just observe what is happening right now and let your instincts react instead of letting your logical mind kick in and regulate your behaviour too much. Look up "Mindfulness in Plain English" - it's available as a free download, or you can order the print version from Amazon. Mindfulness meditation is "simple" compared to more hardcore practices like Zen.

Especially for analytical types (like me), not giving a fuck is to a very large extent about learning to cut out inner dialogue and defence mechanisms that continuously try to make you do "the sensible thing" based on very flawed ideas about what risks are bad, at least until you can unlearn a lot of these ideas.

Mindfulness meditation is good for that - it's a tool to teach you how to observe (which lets you question, which is a pre-requisite to changing) your thought processes as they happen.

There are many other ways - try the various advice, pay attention to what changes for you, and keep at it until you find what works best for you.

As a self proclaimed master of not giving a fuck, whenever I feel worried about what other people think of me, there are two things I like to think about:

Within 100 years, I and everyone I know will be dead.

This seems like it would only exacerbate the situation, but it actually calms me down because I realize that most of my actions have no lasting implications. I realize that if there is some consciousness leftover after I die, I will kick myself for not living it up while I could.

Guilt and worry are emotions that humans have evolved to help us survive as social animals.

Humans are a social species. The emotions we feel are a product of many years of evolution, and they have at one point or another helped us to survive by allowing us to function better in groups. Most of the time when I worry about something, I feel like I have little to no control over it. Worry and guilt seem to emerge in response to social stimuli, which indicates to me that they are instinctual responses. Since they are instinctual, I try to repress/control them in the same way I repress/control anger. Anger, guilt, and worry all have their place, but it doesn't help to feel them all the time.

I believe it is key to care what other people think of you. But the question is not whether or not to care, it is vitally important to have that feedback as you cannot diagnose and correct a organ with a sick organ, ie the whole reason therapy exists. If you wanted to lose weight and become more healthy, the choice isn't whether I should eat, but what should I eat, and how much. In this way the opinion of others can either be diminutive or edifying.

In this capacity, the general public are poor judges of character, value, and advice. A man is either a destitute failure in sweatpants, and unshaven, or vitreous and successful when garbed in a Gucci suit, clean shaved and washed. They are the McDonald's, and Burger Kings of opinion. Evolutionarily we are programed for the quick fix of a Big Mac or the compliment of a stranger, but reliance on such a fickle nutrient void source will make us sick. When we say, do not care what others think. Perhaps it should be amended to: "Do not care what strangers think."

The question isn't whether opinions matter but rather who's opinion matters. The answer should be those with intimate knowledge of your character and tendencies, and agreement, or at least in the direction you want to take. Your old friends may love you, and know you, but if they cannot suppose a decision to become more socially, and with enough practice, sexually, active, Then it is the same as an alcoholic who must cut off his bar friends, or a fat man who must not consider the advice of his fat friends.

People who support your direction but do not have knowledge of you, can be consulted, but not relied upon. A sober person may console the aforementioned overweight alcoholic by saying the occasional wine glass is permissible. By not knowing he is an alcoholic, he has done more harm than he knows. It is the same with the one size fits all advice in the seduction community. Many tidbits can be liberating. Others may be constraining. People are different, what works for one, may not be good for another.

But this is much more nuanced than One Size Fits All ever allows and not very captivating. We gravitate to the extremes and perhaps this is only healthy when first starting out. Saying, never touch the stove is good for children who cannot adsorb on, or off. Saying never touch a credit card, is good for those deep in debt. Saying "live in the moment and don't care what others think." is good for an analytic nerd who has always planned out.

If you don't care about anything, that probably means you're clinically depressed.

I think a better goal is to identify what truly matters to you, the things that you can count on one hand, and focus all of your concern on them.

Let those things motivate your actions, and only those things. If you focus on them wholeheartedly, the other things--the ones that don't matter--will simply slip away.

You'll be better than Tyler.

If you go back and look for the quote, I believe it goes something like this:

No fear. No distractions. The ability to let that which does not matter truly slide.

I think that meshes pretty well with the above.

Since you're posting this in seddit, here is my input:

I hooked up with a guy one night, he "accidentally" left a few hickies all over the place. The next night, I was in a bikini, hickies in plain view, because I truly just don't give a shit. I hooked up with a different guy, who managed to not comment or ask about the obvious hick marks, and even left a few himself. Then, the NEXT night (this was last night) I was back on the first guy, who probably didn't notice the new marks but that's ok because I don't give a flying fuck. TL;DR live in the moment, always consider UTILITY, and get fucked.

Also, get an ego but continue treating people well. Do not externalize how awesome you think you are, just know it.
