In America, yes.
In other more civilized countries, no.
[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Depends if her husband is one of those violent felons.
Basically here, I was told that if a guy/woman told me point blank to my face "I'm going to kill you" and he's in nothing but a pair of swim trunks - if he's one of those violent criminals out of prison I would be legally justified in shooting him on the spot.
And fuck you for your "in more civilized countries" bullshit. It's people like you with that holier-than-though attitude that makes this world more difficult to live in.
[+]TheGDBatman -9 points-8 points-7 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Well no, because she cheated, not him. On the other hand, if he were cheating, then yes, you'd be justified.
Ninja edit: You could, however, kill her, because she's a cheater.

I knew I phrased that badly. Please allow me to clarify.
Answer to 4. Yes, but I would be doing so outside of 1. However, if her husband was the only one who could have legally murdered the adulterous wife, then no one has the right to kill wifey.
Post-script: We may as well be discussing Sharia law. Please return to greater life concerns.

People from here should not be running to other sub-reddits to spam or become voting brigades. It's unproductive and just a bit childish don't you think?
[–]Hamakua 6 points7 points8 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I am normally in agreement, but this is "the" woman's magazine, even if it is universally hated by XX. I think I have learned XX pretty well over the last ~2 years, and they are great people overall (more so per-capita than probably most other sub-reddits). This particular crosspost, I agree with.
A major female publication and having an "issue" with it isn't productive if you keep that issue as quiet as possible.
I personally am not expecting XX to campaign or anything from it, but getting the perspective of rational and intelligent women on a woman's magazine brazen display of misandry is invaluable.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I don't mind cross-posting, what I was pointing out was that this is trying to upvote something for the OP's purpose. It really should be left to those in 2X to decide if this is worth upvoteing on their own. If they are as you say they don't need us marching and in deciding things for them.

I disagree with that sentiment. I have found most women to be very reasonable about men's issues if you talk to them one on one about it.
I think most women have simply been conditioned to see misogyny but not conditioned to see misandry.
I've actually seen the same thing with men from the baby-boom generation who only have daughters -- they have been so conditioned to see misogyny that they don't know misandry exists for today's generation.

I think this is another case of joking/crazy people making jokes/saying crazy shit.
I think the majority of people reading this either perceive it in a joking fashion (the "fuck you for breaking my pencil, I'm going to kill you" fashion) or think she's a wackjob.
So similarly if justin timberlake or someone said words to the same effect, they'd be met with the same response of either thinking he was joking, or insane.

[–]foresthill 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link
Care to elaborate?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I kind of agree with Octagonecologyst on this one. PC isn't just about controlling what people say, it's about controlling what people think by restricting their freedoms. It's becomes easier and easier to marginalize people when they're not allowed to speak out on their own behalf or for their own beliefs.
I'm all for laws forbidding companies from firing people or investigating people for their lives outside of work. The more we restrict free speech the less we are able to throw of the chains that bind us to our places in life and our opinions of ourselves. It's not a large leap to go from what you're saying is bad, to that you yourself are bad, and ultimately to people who think or say those things are bad. Individual freedom is the foundation of a just society.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
People ARE BAD if they think bad things. If Heigl actually thinks it's okay to commit murder then she is a bad fucking person.
The fact that she's saying it suggests that she actually does think that, or at least she thinks that it's not such a big deal that she shouldn't say it.
Freedom of speech has nothing to do with it. She's free to express her views all she wants. And WE are free to call her a horrible person for saying horrible things. That's how free speech works. That's the entire point behind free speech. One of the reasons we defend freedom of speech even for people who say horrible things is because it gives other people the opportunity to argue with them. Beliefs that are never challenged are never strongly held.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well then I'm a bad person. I think and say bad things all the time. Do I mean them? No, but by your definition I'm bad. I've thought and said things like, "Ahhhh, I could just kill that person." But, I've haven't raised my hand to someone since elementary school and likely never will.
Trying to limit thought and speech isn't going to get rid of those things we don't like. Speaking and reasoning about them will. When you hide those things inside they fester and boil over, it's only when they're aired out and left flapping in the wind do those things fluter and fade away. Just like the shaming language feminists use to shut people up, it's meant to silence. When you start hiding the things you don't want to see and hear, many times you'll also cover those thing you need to see or hear. The truth is often considered obscene by those who don't want to see it.
[+]Octagonecologyst -8 points-7 points-6 points 14 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

[–]Charlievil 6 points7 points8 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Playing Devils Advocate, but you could argue that one is clearly a joke, coming from a comedian. The other is a quote from someone who is not known for joking, and without further research, we can't tell if it was a joke that was quoted out of context, a serious incitement to kill cheating husbands/boyfriends or, more likely an off the cuff remark that got blown out of proportion.
Either way, if it was a man advocating killing women, a joke or otherwise, would it be put on the front cover of a mens magazine in such a way?
[–]shitposter2000 -3 points-2 points-1 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Really? You think she was actually making a serious threat?
Or are you know full well that it was a joke, and you're pretending to be outraged so you can make a bit deal of how unfair the media is to men?
Either way you're an idiot.
Also, how is she "not known for joking." Most of the movies she's in are comedies. That PSA she did for spaying and neutering, whatever you think of it, was supposed to be funny.
[–]Charlievil 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
First three words of my post were "Playing Devils Advocate". I'm sure it was a joke and not meant as a serious incitement for violence but as others were saying, do you think if a man had said this about as woman, comedian/joke or not, he would be treated fairly? Or do you you think womens rights groups tear him apart?

I guess I was responding less to you personally than to the whole thread. Yes, I think there is a bit of a double standard. But there are lots of people here who are saying it's not a joke, that she's a man hater, etc etc.
These are the sorts of comments being upboated:
Katherine Heigl is the biggest man hater around
and
When this vile sexist bitch advocated castrating men (and pets), "A Vocie For Men" listed her as a "bigot" on register-her.com. Many recovering whiteknight-oholics on this board complained that AVfM had gone to far, lacked a sense of humor, or hat too little compassion.
(She didn't advocate castrating men any more than Dexter advocates serial killing. It was a joke.)
And this is downboated:
While I don't think what she says is in the best taste, can we all just step back a minute and realise that she probably isn't saying that she'd actually kill her husband if he cheated on her, and that it's probably just a turn of phrase? As in that really common one that everyone uses?

Hulk Hogan said something to the tune of ..."I understand why OJ did it now.." when he was going through his divorce, and he got OBLITERATED by the media. I love how women always say things like "Men are just sex crazed retards." and then you see their magazines, and the only things on the cover are "22 NEW SEX POSITIONS!" or "GET SEXY RIGHT NOW" or "WHAT NOT TO DO IN SEX".
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
this, so hard. 'hurr derp men are pigs and think about sex 24/7' every women's magazine i've ever read has like a 4 page spread on sex, positions, sticking your finger up a dude's ass when you're getting fucked, all that kind of shit. It's all the same, every time around. Then there's an invariable 10 page spread of some girl who had a crap first kiss but is now sexually liberated and kisses every faggot on the street, or some girl that had a wild 2 year sex romp but now regrets it and is looking for a beta husband to pick up her bill.
It's revolting.
I'd much rather read about cars, motorbikes, and based sports, than sex.

Here i am. I've got news for you, a logical man doesn't support yesterday's decisions on today's evidence. If the clown who put her up there had waited till today i would support him, back then the jury was still out. Remember, using today's evidence for yesterday's conclusion is the same as basing today's conclusion on tomorrow's evidence. Maybe we should praise her today, since tomorrow it may be proven that she has secretly been working for men's rights for years...
[–]DarthOvious 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Its a fair point in general when you say that you can't judge past decisions on evidence that came afterwards, but I was of the mind set that the past evidence was enough. My point is basically a "See, I told you so" kind of point, although I'm not meaning for it to sound as childish as that.
[–]ThePigman 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[–]ThePigman 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Sort of misquoted. She was ambiguous, using it in what could be taken as a "If you spill that drink on my new carpet i'll kill you" sort of way. In one of my comments i posted a link to an excerpt at justjared. My internet connection is stuffed so i can't even load the page to find it, but it's there.
[–]DarthOvious 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thats not so bad then, its a turn of phrase I have used myself with my friends so I can't complain. I still don't like her though and I still view her past actions in a bad light but this isn't much to get upset about now.
Lol, I even sent Paul Elam a link to this as well.

I suppose media do tend to make a lot of crap up and that is a fair point. However Its difficult to believe this is the case considering her past performance.
I'm more in agreement with the 8 points raised above by Bobbybobbobs. I didn't really find that advert funny at all and it didn't really follow any major rules in concerns to comedy. A lot of people indicated that although the joke was not funny that this didn't mean it was then offensive, but thats what unfunny jokes do, they offend people. If you were to make an unfunny joke about rape the other person is going to feel pretty uncomfortable.
My main point at the time when the original advert came out, was that this was a company that was doing this. Offensive jokes should be left up to offensive comedians, its not really in good taste for companies to come out with this sort of crap. I work for an engineering firm and if we advertised our services in this ridiculous way, we would be seen as unprofessional at least, similar jokes in concerns to women would cause outrage all round and as a company we would fail. The reason why is because it is not in a company's remit to make jokes about people at their expense while offending them. Therefore I can only assume that if enough men are offended by this, then it is not something that the company should partake in.
EDIT: Sorry I also wanted to add & clarify the difference between offensive comedians and companies doing these things. An offensive comedian will usually spread his offensive jokes across mulitple groups of people, i.e. Men, Women, etc, etc, so in context as a whole that will usually remove any particular discrimation aimed at a particular group. Also they will usually tend to build their show up to be so ridiculous that it is unbelievable. The problem with adverts, is that they don't do this. An advert that makes a particular joke like the one we are talking about only makes fun about a particular group of people and thus particular individuals. It also doesn't get across the point that its ridiculous, lets face it, we know there are women out there who would like nothing better than to chop off a guys private parts, yes they tend to be the radical feminists but they exist and they aren't as few as some people might think, so the point being portrayed in the commercial is quite a realistic one at that. Not to mention I don't really like the way they are trying to humourise psychotic females, as if to say that being a psychotic female is funny. "Oh, look, its Katherine Kuei Becker, she cut off her husbands penis, isn't she soooo funny". Thats generally where this attitude comes from, we dull the sense of injustice using humour and then when events like this happen people like Sharon Osbourne & Co then laugh at it.

A graphic image of a man with his testicles in a jar is insulting, How would you feel about this video if you'd had to get your testicles removed?
It tells men and boys that their bodies are ugly.
Violence against men or any other group is not funny.
Even if you interpret her to be the butt of the joke, it is still male-bashing.
We live in a world where women are free to joke about male mutilation on national TV, (which was pathetically apologized for) just because it's not real, doesn't make it any less insulting or abhorrent to joke about it in hypothetical situations.
Because people are easily influenced, just because they don't agree, doesn't mean they're not affected by it. (how many school kids & supposed adults, now are gonna threaten to chop off someones balls because they think its funny.)
[–]xebo -2 points-1 points0 points 14 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
So does Dexter.
It wouldn't be funny because labias aren't funny.
No one has the right not to be offended. I'm offended at a whole lot of stuff. That doesn't mean I go around sueing those people, or petitioning them. You have NO right not to be offended.
No it doesn't. The joke is that the narrator is neurotic and disconnected from society. It tells "people" that her character is fucking nuts, which in itself is very funny.
Physical comedy is great. It stops being funny when it lowers the value society places on men as a whole, or when it allows male stereotypes to flourish. This comedic video does neither. Again, the butt of the joker is the narrator, not men.
Even if you interpret her to be the butt of the joke, it is still male-bashing
I don't even know what you're getting at here. Are you insinuating that any joke that involves men should be censored? Ridiculous.
It's ok to be insulted by a joke. I watch top gear and get insulted all the time when they bad mouth Americans. It doesn't change the fact that their comedy is a satire of THEMSELVES, not AMERICANS. If they were truly devaluing Americans when they talk about fat, slow, lazy assholes, then there would be a problem. The point is that they are making fun of THEMSELVES. That is the difference. It's called comedy.
This is a little too ambiguous a point to talk about.
Look, here's what you should walk away from this with: This shtick doesn't harm male rights in the least. It simply offends you. There is a clear difference between those two things that you, as a vehement supporter of male rights, needs to be able to differentiate between. If you continue to associate "Male Rights" with "Your right not to be offended" you will devalue our whole movement, and bring us closer to what feminism has become.
I again reiterate: Learn to take a joke.

My stance will not change. Violence against any group of people should NEVER be associated with anything good and neither should it be humerous. Society today has a sick sense of humour, We are desensitized to violence, so it become acceptable to laugh at it.

^ my favourite part of the entire film.
Hmm, let's see about that.
My girlfriends labia hangs like mouth of dog, it stinks of fish, and looks like a seeping open wound, so i cleaned it up for her with a carving knife.
No, your right it isn't funny in the slightest but replace labia with balls and rejig the words and you've got yourself hilarity.

Moronic, stupid jokes made for low IQ hating, sexist female chauvinistic pigs. Incredibly dumbed down, this book teaches violence is ok. One girl told me she kicked a boy in the nuts after she read this book because "he is stupid and I hate boys."
Four other girls, after reading this book physically attacked a 5 year old boy and held him in a closet. They spit on him, called him names and put glue in his hair. Their reason; they wanted to get back at someone and randomly picked a nice innocent Jewish boy.
This Goldman guy made $100 million smackeroos bashing boys. He targeted young girls to sell to. Amazing... Why can't we just ship the Politically Correct to Iran?
Still sold on Amazon.com!@ That's outrageous. That's right, it's ok to advertise "throw rocks at boys" but can you imagine a teeshirt or book that said "girls are stupid, throw rocks at them" teeshirt? Some people will do ANYTHING for money. The witchhunt against boys/men continues by money hungry Politically Correct.
Goldman, maker of the teeshirts (and other anti-male teeshirts) is listed as one of the 100 worst people destroying America.

'31% go for up to 20 minutes, and over a third hit multiple orgasms each time.'
'Most of you - 90% - keep it to the bedroom, but others have done it everywhere from the garden or library to by a lake. And almost 1 in 5 has masturbated at work.'
'Many - 83% use their imagination to get in the mood, with nearly half picking a stranger for the lead role'.

'Nearly two-thirds use just a hand, but 30% use a vibrator or other sex toy.'
'35% masturbate to make up for not getting enough sex.'

If you've read one issue of Cosmo, you've read them all. I don't think it has as much influence as you might think, but I get what you are saying.

Right in every little girl's face, as she waits in line at the market. Every visit. I remember 1968. I have decades of observation behind me. It is a very strong influence. I remember the 60s/70s feminists burning their bras. Very little makeup was worn in those 2 eras. Grey haired women hardly ever dyed their hair. Their influence is quite clear, but you'd have to see it develop over the last 4 or 5 decades to see just how powerful it is.

So... what's the actual context? As knucker3 said
You can get charged for even saying this. As a joke or not, it's all how someone takes it.You say it as a joke to someone and you go through a break up and their is that chance the ex can use this against you. "He told someone he would kill me" now try to defend that. "Officer it was said as a joke!" Officer "So this is a joke to you Hugh?" Putting something in the media in this context makes it seem ok. It may being said tongue in cheek but as we have seen people use music lyrics, movies and stuff they read as a defense in court going with "it brain washed me". If your not sure if its ok picture it in a men's magazine with a man saying it or just Google the reaction that Sean Connery got for telling Barbra Walters that he smacked his wife.
Here is Cosmos ten things to do to to your "Possible" cheating man then picture the outrage if this was in mens health with the roles reversed.

[–]Hamakua 10 points11 points12 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I believe the phrasing was not meant to imply that leaving someone over cheating was vindictive or evil, but rather murder over cheating is... but since one would resort to murder over just leaving someone, it was because leaving someone wasn't "vindictive enough" (to appease their psychosis) by their own deranged measure of revenge or justice.
"Because just leaving him isn't evil or vindictive enough to someone who needs to murder them"
Is the way I interpreted it.

Because Cosmo is the go-to on female opinions. Way to buy into sensationalism.
"I'd kill him/her" or "he'd/she'd kill me" is a pretty common term for "I'd be really damn upset if my SO_____." Right, that's normal to be upset about it. Cosmo is also for women, there will be no gender equality on a single gender-oriented garbage magazine.
[–]guizzy 6 points7 points8 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The problem is not that we think she litteraly would kill someone. It's more that we know fully well that even if meant jokingly, the exact same line gender-reversed would be considered unacceptable.
[–]Quazz 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If you're used to doing interviews then you should really be able to realize that you should avoid certain expressions.
[–]MamitaA 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I can't believe that quote was actually published on the front cover. Wow.
As for the lack of outroar, I think it's because the threat level is interpreted differently. Men are seen as strong and aggressive. If a man threatens you, he not only means it but has the physical ability to carry out said threat, especially against a woman. Typically, women are smaller than men and not as strong, so it's like having an unequal match.
If a woman threatens a man, it is seen differently because women are seen as smaller/weaker than a man, and a man, being bigger and stronger, could certainly incapacitate her if she does carry out her threat.
I'm not saying that's not bs, physical violence of any type is unacceptable, and making threats of physical violence should never be normalized. It's just the way the majority of people will see this, including a large number of men.
[–]ThePigman 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Ah yes, the fucking lamestream media strikes again. This excerpt from the rag, courtesy of JustJared.
" On forgiving her husband if he had an affair: “I’ve been debating this lately. Josh and I always said that cheating would be a deal breaker; there is no second chance. But I’ve seen friends and acquaintances go through it and they’ve found a way back to the relationship, and a way to forgive each other. And as much as I would kill him if he cheated because it would destroy meI have started to question whether, if a mistake were to be made and it was a one-time thing, I would forgive him. Because look at the life we’ve built together. We have history, we have a child…But at the same time, it would be really hard to ever fully trust that person again.”
So once again a mag takes what someone said and makes it seem a lot worse. In this context it no longer looks as if she meant it seriously, so i no longer want to kill her, just tell her off.

Hopefully, next time there is an opportunity to take a stand, the fence-sitters of the MRM will remeber this day.
When it comes to criminal law, the MRM supports compassionate treatment for all defendants (compared to feminists, who have no compassion). But when it comes to public shaming of bigots and hate-mongering feminists, there are no second chances, there is no compassion, and there is no mercy.

Doesn't matter if it's a turn of phrase. It's fucked the hell up that this thinking is even acceptable in our society.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
What do you mean? The sort of thinking that a cheating partner deserves reprimand or that you should kill them? Because in my opinion there is nothing wrong with the former, regardless of gender. And as for actually killing your partner, my point was that she most likely didn't mean that. Who says "I'll kill you" while being serious nowadays? It is most commonly used today to mean being very angry with someone.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I agree that a cheating partner of either gender deserves, at the least, reprimand. For many of us I think it would be a dealbreaker.
However, "kill my partner" is still not something that should be put on the cover of a magazine. And it's definitely not something that a man could be publicly quoted as saying without the shit hitting the fan.
Yeah, I think I agree with that. To me, the phrase doesn't hold the original meaning anymore, so seeing it I didn't really even connect it to actually killing someone. However it is stupid to put it on the front of the magazine. They always choose the most controversial quotes and put them on the front cover. As I say, it was probably a passing comment in an interview.
Yeah, I don't agree with it on the cover so much. But my original comment was mainly addressing other commenters who seemed to be taking her completely seriously.
Yeah, you're probably right that it was a passing comment... gotta remember, bad/shocking news sells copy.
I think the real issue here is that even if any rational person wouldn't get all worked up over it, there's going to be someone out there who does take it to heart. Hooray for advancing the state of our culture! /facepalm
Turn of phrases now get men put in a prison cell....it seems Ms. Heigel and all you ladies that think this is cool belong there as well....this is MR activism.

Alienation of affection is when your wife (or rarely husband) doesn't want to sleep with you.
It was grounds for divorce back when we thought sex was something that was a natural thing we all expected to do and it was to be done in marriage.
Now alienation of affection would be called rape by law suit of wife by the husband except in France where a woman just won a case against her husband.
What your talking about is cheating. Cheating or cuckolding or extra-marital affair or our current.....oh, she just needed to get that our of her system......was grounds for divorce used by women against men.
Now women cheat more than men so you will find it a hard sell to get cheating outlawed.
If you want revenge you should go to jail because your a sociopath.....move on, you don't own people and people fall out of love.
This is what female entitlement looks like.

If you cant sue for damages after a broken contract then your contract wasn't that good bro.
But I hope you realize relationships are nothing like that, you have no ownership over your partner and therefore there is no law to take in your hands.
If there still was legal recourse for the jilted spouse, would the victims of infidelity choose that option, and would it result in fewer instances of domestic violence?
No, it's obvious that said violence weren't planned ones, it's a burst of aggression caused by heavy emotions. It disables any logical thinking.

You can't tell a political statement stated as a satirical joke and understand the subtext?
And, do you feminists think it's funny to joke about rape?
That explains alot.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
when have you seen a rape joke on the front of a mainstream magazine, and not provoke a national witchhunt?
[+][deleted] 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Hey, that's ironic, isn't it?
Haha, are you actually saying being raped and killed are equivalent?
