JK Rowling launches women-only service for sex abuse victims

Janice Turner

Monday December 12 2022, 9.00am, The Times

JK Rowling is founding and personally funding a new service for women survivors of sexual violence. Launched days before Nicola Sturgeon’s controversial Gender Recognition Reform Bill is expected to pass through the Scottish parliament, the Edinburgh-based centre, Beira’s Place, will be female-only.

The author, who has written about the sexual and domestic abuse she suffered in her twenties, believes there is an “unmet need” for Scottish women who want “women-centred and women-delivered care at such a vulnerable time”. She hopes Beira’s Place, which will employ professional staff to provide free one-to-one and group counselling, “will enable more women to process and recover from their trauma”.

Rowling’s board of directors are all vocal opponents of the Gender Recognition Reform Bill, which will permit anyone to change the legal sex on their birth certificate by making a simple statutory declaration, a process known as self-identification. Feminists, including Reem Alsalem, UN special rapporteur on violence against women and girls, have raised grave concerns it will open up women’s services and private spaces to abuse by male predators.

Beira’s board comprises Rhona Hotchkiss, a former prison governor, who has opposed the Scottish government’s policy of moving trans-identified male sex offenders to women’s jails; Johann Lamont, a former leader of the Scottish Labour Party and a lawyer; Dr Margaret McCartney, an academic, broadcaster and Glasgow GP; and Susan Smith, director of For Women Scotland, a grassroots feminist group founded to fight the gender reform bill. Beira’s chief executive is Isabelle Kerr, a former manager of Glasgow Rape Crisis who received an MBE in 2020 for her work supporting British citizens who had been raped overseas.

The provision of single-sex services has been a key battleground of the gender reform bill. Already in Scotland, most domestic violence refuges and rape support services are “trans inclusive” and accept referrals from both sexes. In recent years councils have removed grants from women-only refuges in favour of generic organisations. Monklands Women’s Aid in North Lanarkshire, which was set up more than 40 years ago, had its council funding withdrawn in favour of a social justice charity which also helps men.

Most controversial is Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre whose chief executive, Mridul Wadhwa, a trans woman, told the Guilty Feminist podcast that women sexual assault victims who request female-only care will be “challenged on your prejudices” and told to “reframe your trauma”.

Yet in her recent book Defending Women’s Spaces, veteran campaigner Karen Ingala Smith, the chief executive of Nia, a domestic abuse charity in London, describes how women traumatised by male violence fare better and feel safer in female therapeutic spaces.

Beira’s Place is legally permitted to exclude males under the exemptions of the 2010 Equality Act, which allows single-sex services if they are “a proportionate means to achieve a legitimate end”.

It is named after Beira, the Scottish goddess of winter. JK Rowling said: “Beira rules over the dark part of the year, handing over to her sister, Bride, when summer comes again. Beira represents female wisdom, power, and regeneration. Hers is a strength that endures during the difficult times, but her myth contains the promise that they will not last for ever.”

The service is not a charity, but privately funded by Rowling, a noted philanthropist. The amount she will donate to set up and run Beira’s Place has not been disclosed.

Women initiate as much or more domestic violence.

They actually initiate much, much more. It's just not as well documented.

[–]that_guy_Zed 22 points23 points24 points 3 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

Do you have any sources to support that?

[–]sakura_drop 100 points101 points102 points 3 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

Almost 24% of all relationships had some violence, and half (49.7%) of those were reciprocally violent. In nonreciprocally violent relationships, women were the perpetrators in more than 70% of the cases. Reciprocity was associated with more frequent violence among women (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]=2.3; 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.9, 2.8), but not men (AOR=1.26; 95% CI=0.9, 1.7). Regarding injury, men were more likely to inflict injury than were women (AOR=1.3; 95% CI=1.1, 1.5), and reciprocal intimate partner violence was associated with greater injury than was nonreciprocal intimate partner violence regardless of the gender of the perpetrator (AOR=4.4; 95% CI=3.6, 5.5).

- Differences in Frequency of Violence and Reported Injury Between Relationships With Reciprocal and Nonreciprocal Intimate Partner Violence

The median percentage of men who severely assaulted a partner was 5.1%, compared to a median of 7.1% for severe assaults by the women in these studies. The median percentage that the rate of severe assaults by women was of the rate of severe assaults by men is 145%, which indicates that almost half again more women than men severely attacked a partner.

- Gender symmetry and mutuality in perpetration of clinical-level partner violence: Empirical evidence and implications for prevention and treatment

There's also disproportionately high amounts of DV among lesbian couples over heterosexual and gay males (who tend to have the lowest DV rates):

According to a 2011 study produced in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, domestic physical abuse among lesbian cohabiting couples is 35.4%, almost two times the rate of abuse found among heterosexual couples. Other studies place the prevalence of domestic violence among lesbian couples even higher than that. A 2010 study by the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control found that the rate of intimate partner violence (IPV) among lesbians is a stunning 40.4%. Another study in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology found that the rate of lesbian IPV is 47.5%. This means that nearly half of all women in lesbian domestic lifestyles have been abused by their partners.

Further statistics have also shed light on the understudied epidemic of sexual intimate partner violence (IPV) among women in same-sex partnerships. One study produced by the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault found that 33% of women have been sexually assaulted by another woman. This statistic prompted leftist publications Slate and Marie Claire to pen articles about the reality of lesbian rape and sexual abuse. Two more studies, one published in the Journal of Lesbian Studies (2008) and another in Violence and Victims (1997), suggest that rates of lesbian sexual abuse in domestic partnerships could be upwards of 55% and 42%, respectively. This translates to about 1 in 2 women who have been victims of sex abuse in a lesbian relationship.

Comparatively, sexual abuse among heterosexual domestic relationships is estimated to be 4.4% according to the National Institutes of Health. Some epidemiologists may argue that high abuse prevalence among homosexual women includes “lifetime risk”, which incorporates abuse faced in childhood. Yet, when these variables are taken into consideration, we still see alarmingly high rates of lesbian IPV.

Around 28% of male-identifying respondents and 41% of female-identifying respondents reported having been in a relationship where a partner was abusive.

...lesbian women were more likely than gay men to report having been in an abusive same-sex relationship (41% and 28% respectively)

Source.

[+]that_guy_Zed -17 points-16 points-15 points 3 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Each of these studies for heterosexual couples use self report measures and neither measured the severity of violence. Reports were more often of women than of men, but that does not mean women perpetrate more often, only that they are reported on more frequently. This would be consistent with previous research that says women are more likely to report DV and IPV than men are (see https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/088626099014012003).

So I completely agree that men are unfairly represented as perpetrators. But it does not mean women are far more likely to commit violence in heterosexual relationships. Your second source even said that IPV was perpetrated at equal rates "Similar percent of men and women perpetrate clinical-level violence and it is rarely self-defense."

Let's fight for men and stop fighting against women.

[–]FiveMagicBeans 14 points15 points16 points 3 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

So you trying to argue that men are falsely reporting women, causing the number of reports to be unusually high? Despite the fact that we also know men are much less likely to report DV in the first place?

Because that's the only way your slanted interpretation of things actually makes any logical sense... you're desperately reaching.

It's well known that when men engage in domestic violence it's more often "clinical level", which is a poorly defined term which limits DV to actions like punching, choking, or attacks with a weapon and explicitly excludes things like slapping and throwing items.

Women commit more offenses, men do more damage. Trying to carefully massage the definitions to make that statistic go away isn't going to work.

[–]that_guy_Zed -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

No, I'm not saying that at all. I said men are less likely to report. False reports would be more often. If you want to go back and read the study, you'll see the authors themselves talking about the limitations of self report studies.

[–]FiveMagicBeans 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

No, I'm not saying that at all. I said men are less likely to report. False reports would be more often.

These two statements directly oppose each other and don't correlate with your argument or the author's discussion of the limitation on self reporting. A self-reporting framework does not allow "false reports" because individuals are reporting directly upon their own actions, not the actions of others.

The authors themselves indicate that both genders under-report their own aggression and asserts that men do so more than women, but their abstract does not indicate whether they've calculated a difference. If you have a specific number from further than the abstract, I'd love to see it.

Multiple studies have demonstrated similar numbers from 60:40 to 70:30 in non-reciprocal IPV.

[–]that_guy_Zed 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

False reports happen all the time with self reports, but I never claimed there were any false reports, I'm not sure where you're getting that.

They don't have to prove a difference in reporting between genders because it's already been proven (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/088626099014012003). Read the limitations section for that information, not the abstract.

[–]FiveMagicBeans 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

How about in the text I specifically quoted from your reply.

"False reports would be more often"

You're not getting it. If you want to make an argument that the 70:30 ratio of non-reciprocal IPV is inaccurate and that the ratio is closer to 50:50 you need to be able to assert not only that men self report less often, but that they report less than half as often.

Lets use a mathematical example.

  • You have a group of 5,000 people and you're testing the hypothesis that women and men engage in IPV at similar rates. We're going to say that rate is 5%

  • You ask them a series of questions and based upon their responses you determine whether they have engaged in IPV as the aggressor.

  • You would expect your hypothesis to yield approximately 250 aggressors with an even distribution of 125 men and 125 women.

  • Instead the evidence you've collected finds that there are 175 women and only 75 men who answered those questions in that manner.

We know based on the testing from that article that both groups under-report, so the number isn't likely to be 5%, but if we're interested in the ratio, we need to know how MUCH the men under report themselves. The only way to get BACK to a hypothesis where the ratio is equal, is for us to assume that men under report a fucking colossal 133+% (75 x 2.33 = 175)

That is the only way we arrive at your assertion that men and women abuse each other at relatively equal numbers.

If there's a part of that study that indicates that men under report their IPV by such a significant amount... lets see it.

[–]mopemardermun 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Lmao so you asked for sources thinking "yeah I bet this guy doesn't have any", got given them, and rather than change your opinion based on newly provided information you instead decided the MULTIPLE sources he linked were wrong, based on nothing but a baseless and unsubstantiated theory, simply because it opposed what you believed to be correct.

Blue pilled men are truly pathetic lol

[+]Different_Weekend817 -40 points-39 points-38 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Almost 24% of all relationships had some violence, and half (49.7%) of those were reciprocally violent. In nonreciprocally violent relationships, women were the perpetrators in more than 70% of the cases. Reciprocity was associated with more frequent violence among women (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]=2.3; 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.9, 2.8), but not men (AOR=1.26; 95% CI=0.9, 1.7).

i'm not sure that is such a good source since when you do the numbers women are by far more likely to be the victims in heterosexual domestic abuse cases.

from your source:

approximately 1.5 million women and 835 000 men are physically assaulted or raped by intimate partners in the United States annually.

[–]ThatRandomCrit 42 points43 points44 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, they ARE more likely to be the victims, but they start it WAY more than it's led on. That's the point.

[–]andejoh 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

But how many were made to penetrate? The number of men raped by women is often obscured by legal definition.

The other question is how many of the women abused were abused by other women? Women can be both the majority of victims AND the majority of perpetrators.

[–]After-Ad-3806 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You could also ask how many men were abused by OTHER men.

[–]XennoJiiva 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And not just that. Abusive of all types are much much higher in lesbian relationships

[–]_BlueShark87 30 points31 points32 points 3 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

There’s nothing wrong with womens only spaces but denying them to men like Erin pizzeys abuse shelter for men was(fact check me on this). That’s where they enter the wrong.

[–]Adept-Development-00 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes this is what frustrates me, how do we solve this problem. A womens only space is fine to me, as long as we also get a mens only space. You don't create equality through inequality.

Edit: Actually I think a mens only space may cause more of a disconnect between men and women. They would feel excluded in the same way we do. Men just need to come together at neutral spaces in real life. I believe that is the best solution.

[+]samuraishill 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"As long as we get a mens only space" its all want want want. Well if you want something, you have to actually stop sitting around complaining about all the "inequality" and DO IT. Just like JK.

WHO DO YOU WANT TO MAKE THE THE "MENS ONLY SPACE." Did you want JK, or some other woman to provide this emotional support?

There comes a point where you have to do things yourself and stop expecting women to do everything for you. Like you sed, men just need to come together in real life.

If only they would, rather than complaining all day about how unfair it is that women create their own support groups....

[–]BungyStudios -4 points-3 points-2 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

There's everything wrong with women's only places.

[–]Adept-Development-00 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I don't mind a womens only space if we get a mens only space.

[–]BungyStudios 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I support equality, (not the equality Feminists advocate but real equality).

There should be no law which applies to males which doesn't apply to females or vice versa. And any form of sex-based segregation is sexism, regardless of which sex is the victim class.

[–]Adept-Development-00 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes I agree but unfortunately extreme feminist don't want that because they view men coming together as misogyny which I think is a ridiculous double standard but I'm not too upset about it. Let them have theirs and we create a space for everyone. Creating a mens only space will just separate us. We need to be assertive, not aggressive. All we need is to come together in real life at any space. It doesn't matter what. Men need stronger real life relationships specifically with other men, but women too.

[–]BungyStudios 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I feel like they'll start legally going after male only spaces like they went after pubs in the early 1900s.

[+]samuraishill 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And how do you suppose we get it?

A bright idea, is to actually do it. Sadly many men don't want to out in the time, effort and emotional labour it takes to organise, prioritise and communicate their experiences to a large public group. They would rather have a woman sort it all out and pander to their wounds.

I don't see any mens only spaces from any male leaders at all. Its sad that we can't step up like women have so publicly.

[+]samuraishill 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Just make a male led and organised group. For men only. Its not the responsibility of women to help us or create safe spaces for us.

Its like saying, women having freedom and rights to talk about their experiences with other women who can undoubtedly relate, somehow takes away from men.

It is a female space. Come on we are capable of making male only spaces where we can achieve the same goals. We shouldn't be hating on JK, should he hating on all the rich, powerful men who have done fuck all to talk about these issues.

Its not womens problem.

[–]NuclearTheology 18 points19 points20 points 3 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Agree. This is good and shows Rowling is putting her money where her mouth is. Because she’s funding shelters for women doesn’t make her an enemy of men, nor a misandrist

[–]rabel111 -5 points-4 points-3 points 3 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

It makes her a sexist pig

It's illegal in the UK to discriminate against people on the basis of their sex.

Okay, imma say when it comes to shelters for sexual assault victims, the “discrimination” thing isn’t a hill to die on

[–]rabel111 -4 points-3 points-2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

If JK Rowling opened a sex abuse centre for white people, would you say that's OK? Is it your own bias that make discrimination on the basis of sex OK, when discrimination on the basis of race, or sexual preference, are not OK?

[–]NuclearTheology 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Homie. Opening a battered women’s shelter is a far cry from opening a white people only shelter and you damn well know it.

[–]rabel111 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Really? Is there an exemption for this particular knd of service?

The Equity Act 2010 (UK) has this to say......

For sex discrimination, an exception to the law is permitted inter alia where: separate services are provided “for persons of each sex” if a joint service for persons of both sexes would be “less effective” (sched 3, para 26); and provision “only to persons of one sex” is permissible where:

“only persons of that sex have need of the service”; OR the service is provided at a hospital or other establishment for “persons requiring special care, supervision or attention”; OR the service will be used at the same time by multiple people, or involve physical contact between the provider and user of the service, and the presence of or contact with a service user of the other sex might reasonably be objected to (sched 3, para 27).

Given the Scottish focus on equity, there would be ample support for single sex services for men and women in Scotland, except for one major sexist value......

Scotland recognises protected characteristics (i.e. race, sex, sexual preference, etc) that cannot be used to discriminate against a person, but provides exceptions for vulnerable populations. But "vulnerable population" isn't defined. The populations considered worthy of exceptions to the Act are "LISTED"..... WOMEN, children, black and minority ethnic people, and older people. And clearly listed by sexist pigs with an entrenched culture of hatred of men. There are no protected single sex spaces for men in Scotland, because all Scottish men are predators.

This is the same sexist list used by the sexist pigs of the UN to allow the slaughter of men and boys in war zones, deny food assistance to men and boys in areas affected by famine; and to deny services to men and boys affected by women's violence.

So is this lawful.... Not really, but the gatekeepers of the law, the sexist pigs who identified every population other than men as vulneralbe, allow this travesty of justice to continue with their bigoted noses held high in the air, shouting their sexist virtue.

[–]NuclearTheology 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

She never once attacked trans people you hyperbolic spaz. She - at WORST - said women’s rights and safety and advancement should not come at the cost of predatory men. Her own “manifesto” was so tame with respect to what people are claiming about her. She is no transphobe

[–]Jumping3 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I don't think you got what I said I specifically said she is not attacking trans people (which would actually be better) she is specifically and only attacking trans women and its based on the predication of men being sexual predators.

They are creating this shelter due to fears other female only shelters might actually admit and help a small number of biological males. In other words, existing shelters while hugely discriminatory aren’t discriminatory enough.

This whole situation is being driven by the false premise that women are always the victims and men always the perpetrators. Studies show women initiate at least as much domestic violence as men do. Studies similarly show that lesbian couples have proportionality more domestic violence than straight or gay couples.

We don’t assume it will be traumatic for women who were attacked by other women to be in a shelter with other women. Victims of battery are often treated in hospitals with people of the same sex of their attacker.

Not all female victims were attacked by men. Women initiate as much or more domestic violence. Men can be victims too. This whole thing reeks of misandry justifying male victims be denied help. Victim resources should help all victims regardless of sex.

[–]FunkTheFreak 122 points123 points124 points 3 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

This is 100% okay. There should be women-only sex abuse shelters as long as there are also resources for men as well.

It’s also 100% okay if JK only supports the women ones.

[–]pargofan 28 points29 points30 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Yes, you're right.

But I think this highlights that it's NOT ok if a men-only ANYTHING were set up. Which is wrong. Just like it's appropriate to have women-only things, such as sex abuse issues, there's men-only appropriate things as well.

[–]FunkTheFreak 17 points18 points19 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Agreed 100%.

It’s bullshit because men need support too, but I think that’s more of a societal issue and not a JK Rowling issue. The general feeling of this thread is more like hater towards JK for not including men. She can do whatever she wants to do and I support her in this effort.

[–]kickimy 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Thanks for that. As feminist I fully support full government funding of mens' rape crisis and homeless shelters and mental health specialist services.

I don't get why people are mad at JK for funding something that relates to her personal experience. 87% of the world's billionaires are men and if Elon Musk or Branson or any other rich guys offered to set up mens' support or health services I'd be super grateful to them for stepping in.

Upset guys should try lobbying these rich guys, JK gets a lot of letters and thank you cards from women for her advocacy. Maybe if men write to the rich guys and ask for support, they'd take note like JK has and put their money to better services on earth rather than all this space rocket stuff that only benefits the tiny minority of rich men.

[–]djb1983CanBoy 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe you’re bringing up a completely different issue? That rich people have too much money and it should be governments doing this stuff and that rich people are only philanthropist about things they care about? Which has nothing to do with what the people actually need?

But you can keep painting jk not as the sexist and transist person she is. Classic whataboutism.

We can't even have male only gyms in the UK. They are illegal. There's only one, because it's traditional, but they have been going after that hard.

Meanwhile there's thousands of gyms for women only.

So I have to go to the gym in a country where looking at women is now illegal, where women come for attention instead of working out, and have some girl twerk in my face whilst I'm trying to work out. Meanwhile women can just go to their own gyms. SPOT THE DIFFERENCE

[–]ithinkmynameismoose 43 points44 points45 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No seriously, if that’s the explanation then it is a good one and good for her for recognizing a legitimate concern.

[–]MezzaCorux 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

While yes to most of your points there is a legitimate concern of predators pretending to be trans women in order to gain access to protected spaces. I’m fine with separate spaces for DV victims of both male and female but the main issue is the lack of spaces for men. The over prioritizing of women’s spaces.

[–]Chome_gnompy 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

But it works in the other direction too. There are plenty if cis women out there who predate on other women.

Hell, I've heard female survivors talk the women who run the damn shelters predating on them. Imo it would be better to create a plan for if (when) these predators pop up.

[–]MezzaCorux 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree but saying that taking precautions won’t 100% solve the problem so we shouldn’t take any precautions is kind of a dumb argument.

https://aliesq.medium.com/extensive-research-women-initiate-domestic-violence-more-than-men-men-under-report-it-3bbaa4fbec9d

[–]SaltedCanadian 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This isn’t a DV shelter. It’s a rape crisis centre and men commit the vast majority of rapes against both women and men.

[–]Flying_Reinbeers 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This whole situation is being driven by the false premise that women are always the victims and men always the perpetrators.

I don't see it that way. A women's shelter should be for women, not for men or trans. Shelters for abused people should be heavily gatekept, regardless of sex.

[–]BiGuyTy951 points 3 years ago [recovered] (4 children) | Copy Link

You do realize it's because she's tired of TiMs encroaching on Female only spaces?

She's not anti-men or trans, she's doing it for women's safety from men. She doesn't think it's always men that cause issues, or any of your other complaints. It's just because of TiM assholes that are demanding access to spaces they don't need to be in.

[–]63daddy 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

  1. Women on women DV is greater proportionality than make on woman and women initiate at least as much DV as men, so that justification is nonsense.

  2. It’s the same basic argument that was used to justify white only spaces that discriminated against blacks. Do you also agree with that similar justification for discrimination?

[–]MezzaCorux 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The main issue is people who abuse the system because there really is no way to distinguish someone who is actually trans against someone pretending to be trans to gain access to particular spaces. While a vast majority of trans people aren’t going to do anything bad, you still have bad actors who do take advantage of the widespread institutional acceptance. It’s definitely something that needs to be looked into but unfortunately only one side is looking into it while the other pretends it doesn’t happen.

[–]Maxwell1138 23 points24 points25 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That was a rhetorical question, you are obviously ignorant of reality.

[+]angryearth 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

A female only shelter would have been shut down in Scotland also. That’s why Rowling is using all private funds.

[–]Maxwell1138 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Shes using all private funds so she can run the thing any way she wants, because she won't have to answer to anyone. That is not a good thing. JK Rowling has not shown herself to be a very generous or caring person. She just wants to appear that way because she cares very deeply about her public image. And she has a lot of baggage and personal agendas she is desperate to push in an environment where she isn't answerable to anyone. That shelter is going to be a horror story, just wait.

There are far more women reliant on mens income for shelter than men reliant on women’s income for shelter. Far far more.

Those are the people that need shelters the most since they don’t have the means to leave.

[–]63daddy 60 points61 points62 points 3 years ago* (9 children) | Copy Link

Just because more women may need domestic violence shelters, doesn’t mean male victims in need should be denied help. More men suffer from heart attacks, but we don’t refuse to help female heart attack victims as a result.

[+]FrodoBaggginz -48 points-47 points-46 points 3 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

But we also don’t force every business to treat male heart attacks. Some business open and just treat diabetes. They choose a specific sector to focus on and refuse everyone else.

[–]63daddy 40 points41 points42 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

A healthcare facility focusing on certain medical conditions is very different from denying victims care based on their sex.

So you also think earl silvermans male shelter should have been protested and shut down? I’m fine if you’re consistent and you sided with the feminists shutting him down. But I think gendered shelters makes sense as long as everyone is supported.

[–]MuchAndMore 14 points15 points16 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes. And what everyone is trying to get at here is that the disparity of women's shelters compared to male shelters is wholly inadequate. To the point that opening up ANOTHER women's only shelter is blatantly sexist at this point.

This is what people are trying to get across to you but explaining in different ways.

We don't care if shelters are gendered if there was even close to equal male equivalents.

[–]pm_me_your_buttbulge 24 points25 points26 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Do you think that they would react respectfully if there were male-only DV places? Because I suspect it would not be treated with respect. It'd be called sexist and discriminatory.

Who is they?

[–]pm_me_your_buttbulge 14 points15 points16 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You didn't imply this for men. You implied that men should not be given shelters because women are winning the comparison war, men should be denied because they lost.

[–]FrodoBaggginz 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[+]that_guy_Zed -16 points-15 points-14 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

While it is true that men and women engage DV and IPV at the same rate, women are significantly more likely to be severely injured and hospitalized than men. It is important that we have safe places for women because of this statistic.

This statistic doesn't mean men aren't hurt and the public definitely needs more awareness and discourse about male victims. It does, however, completely justify a women only clinic.

[–]63daddy 21 points22 points23 points 3 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Men suffer more heart attacks and more diabetes. Does it follow the vast majority of hospitals should therefore refuse to help female diabetics and female heart attack victims?

Just because fewer men may require domestic violence help services, doesn’t mean that those who do should be denied help just because of their sex.

Help all victims. If more women need help, then they’ll end up using more of the resources, no discrimination needed.

[–]that_guy_Zed -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women don't cause male heart attacks or diabetes. Having a woman in a hospital that treats mainly male diseases has no impact on treatment.

Typically, men have created environments that cause women to escape to DV shelters. Therefor, having men in DV shelters has a huge impact on treatment.

[–]athanc 47 points48 points49 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Yep, Woman's only shelter is a good thing for them. Men should focus on what we can control and not be upset about being excluded. Being upset about this only causes more division and negative emotions to boil no real problems are being solved.

I'm not defending it. I don't like it but I'm saying to just leave it be for now because there's nothing we can immediately do. I suggest meeting irl in spaces geared towards men to talk about our problems and find solutions. That's how men work best. That will give us the sense of community that we need and help us find solutions to this problem. Nothing gets done if we just cry about our problems on the internet.

We need to keep trying, or find other solutions. Maybe don't call it mens only space, but create a space where only we want to go. Allow women to come but cater it towards men. If we allow women to come they won't take it down for 'misogyny' and we can have a space to ourselves to talk about our problems. Lol this sounds like mens rights. Men just need to hang out and connect with each other in real life. The internet is kind of ruining mens connection a little bit, it makes it easier to connect with more people but we don't have to rely on each other the same way. That's what I think we need, to rely on each other in real life.

[–]Notdeadsleepy 61 points62 points63 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Guys I don’t think having only woman shelters is bad in this situation. Not everything needs to be mixed, but of course there should be places like this for men also.

[–]MisterBowTies 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The problem is there aren't these resources for men and when someone does try it gets shut down. It'd be like if there were a brother and sister, the brother had to share all his toys but the sister gets her own special toys that are just hers and the brother gets in trouble for wanting to play with and is selfish if he wants something just for him.

[–]63daddy 10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There may be an argument for separate but equal, but that’s not the case here. It’s all about having services for women only that are denied to men and justifying this discrimination.

[–]Shadow1787 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Exactly, there should just as many women only as male only and then maybe a mixed one were trans women/men can go to.

[+]WhatsTheHoldup 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly, there should just as many women only as male only

There should 100% be spaces for men as well, but the demand for resources doesn't always perfectly split down the middle.

If in some hypothetical situation, half of the men's shelters are empty while all the women's are full, I don't see why we need to build another empty men's shelter before we can build another women's.

[–]astrodonnie 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I am unironically happy for her. A private individual can set up a shelter for whomever they please. What upsets me is when a government decides it only needs to help women, or helps women in a disproportionate way. The article is behind a paywall so it is unclear if she will receive government funding. If so I see it as discrimination, but once again on behalf of the government, not her.

[–]njjb-1111 25 points26 points27 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Is it wrong that I don’t see this as a detriment to Mens Right? JKR has done something that in todays world has gotten her crucified - speaking up for biological women, a lot of BW’s feel their space is being invaded by TW’s, JKR is against TW having access to biological women only spaces.

And that is fine, what also should be fine is spaces for Males only, we have to change minds and put studies out there for men who are abused and open safe havens for abused men, especially if they’re trapped financially.

I used to volunteer at a men’s mental health charity and it’s become hugely popular, many women support it and it is a men only space.

This is a positive step in the right direction, and it can spread.

For anyone interested the charity it’s called HUMEN.

How is this an issue? She is free to do whatever she wants with her money, she doesn't have an obligation to cater to male victims as well. It would be a problem if she actively opposed men only shelters, but she isn't. She is simply focusing on a group of people with whom she shares experiences. Seriously, this woman can't even breathe without being criticized for doing it wrong.

[–]daymitjim 24 points25 points26 points 3 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

J.K. Rowling supporting women doesn't hurt me at all.
If you care about abused men, open your house to one or better yet contribute to having mens shelters built. We all deserve help and protection and a "right" is just a privilege, and it's a responsibility to do the things necessary for people to have access to privileges.
We can all take more responsibility for ourselves and one another.
J.K. Rowling is putting her money to good use, let's make sure we see more of that.

[–]63daddy 20 points21 points22 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

But this is not JKRs fault.

[–]63daddy 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

I didn’t say it was her fault. I’m saying her shelter and all the others are all based in justifying that women victims deserve help and men who are victims don’t.

They are arguing about whether a small number of transgender women should count as men or women, but they all share the underlying theme that it’s female victims that should be helped, not male victims.

[–]Lolkar 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I follow her on twitter and she talks a lot about how chicks with dicks are invading biological woman spaces. If I was a woman I would be upset too. So probably a lot of biological woman feel unsafe and are reaching to her becouse she is also biological woman. Quite understandable. I doubt guys are messaging her about men's rights left and right. Becouse guys rarely share and she is a woman and can't relate to them.

Btw. I have nothing against trans women, but in todays world anyone can call themselves a woman, which is crazy. I literally can call myself woman right now and some people would applaud me. Thats the problem, predators pretending to be woman's to get to woman's spaces. I will probably get banned becouse reddit is wokeaf, but I don't care.

[–]daymitjim 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

J.K. Rowling owes nothing to anyone at all, but she is still choosing to help someone.
And it isn't difficult to see why she gives support to this particular cause after the (no pun intended) witch hunt she's been subject to for god knows how long.
Regardless of the socio-political subtext of what she's doing, at the end of the day it is helping somebody that no private citizen is obligated to help, but she's paying out of her own pocket to something that is ultimately good.

Our society needs more support resources for men, yes, but J.K. is not obligated to help men or you.
If somebody else getting help is annoying you, you're in a line of thinking that is detrimental to civilization.
The only people we can righteously demand something of are our governments, and the only people we can hold accountable is ourselves.
Maybe one day your daughter gets help in that place, let's make sure by that time there's a place available to your son too.

I discovered the Men's Right's Movement because of the bullshit I saw working at a women's DV shelter. Entitled parasites looking for hand outs, half of them don't even have an abuser at all, they just know DV shelters are way cushier than general homeless shelters.

Examples of "abusers" include the elderly father of a woman in her mid-40s who insisted she do her own dishes from when she had a meal alone (he washed them from a meal together) and laundry and vacuum and also pay for her own special bottled water because she was too good for tap. He bought all the rest of the food for both of them. He bought it. He prepared it. When he told her to pound sand, she crashed at a friend's house for a few weeks before they got tired of her useless loafing and refusing to pick up after herself, and dumped her at the shelter. We took her in because "expecting her to do chores is abusive and patriarchal."

Many of them had their abusers come pick them up at the shelter for dates, or had their abusers drop off cigarettes or McDonalds or other such special meals if they didn't like what the shelter served that night.

One of the biggest headaches was trying to get them to do *basic* chores to keep the place running without having to hire maid staff. Things like mopping the community kitchen thrice a week and sweeping it the rest, vacuuming the living room, doing the dishes. We were required by grant to have one community meal per day and despite a weekly meeting for a shopping list, nobody wanted to be the cook of the week. You didn't have to make more than hamburger helper. You could make the same damn thing all 7 days of your week. The one-meal-a-day cook was never the one responsible for the cooking/group meal dishes, we always made sure those were two separate chores. But you may as well have been asking them to chop off their toes.

They felt they should be able to come in and get everything free and were offended at having to do any basic daily living task they'd have to do in their own homes while they awaited their priority spot on housing lists for being with us. We also encouraged them to lie about their residence because technically you're not supposed to get food stamps when staying at a facility that provides you with food, has no rent, provides heating/water/electric/sanitary goods, etc.

We sent women to hotels if they just couldn't get along with the other girls. But no hotels for men because one time we put up an abused man in a hotel and he had a crazy drug party and got arrested and the hotel got mad at us. So no men ever because of one bad apple. But the very same exact women who assaulted or threatened other women in the shelter were welcome right back in as soon as their victim discharged.

This is going to help women and not in any way hurt men. Not something worth being mad about if that’s where the Harry Potter girl wants to spend her money.

It's her own money so if she wants to exclude men, then that's her perogative.

The issue arises when most people lose their shit if a man does the exact same thing funding a Male-only space with his own money. Men are allowed to be excluded, women are not.

Worse still is when public funds are used to exclude men, so we all pay through taxes for womens-only spaces but not men's-only spaces.

I'm of the abolish gender now point of view. And I'm not sure I am seeing the trasphobia you report.

Theres such a think in uk law as perceptive discrimination where by when someone discriminates against you for a perceived personal characteristic, it doesn't matter if you have it. (e.g. Norfolk v Coffey)

Clearly Rowling is discriminating against people she perceives to be men (It may or may not be an exempt discrimination) and I think almost everyone hates her for it even if we have different ways of saying why.

Trasphobia in practice looks exactly the same as sexism.

There's a 30 minute contra points video about this same person in which she lays that out. But in summary "evil men invading our safety spaces" and "pore tricked young girls"

I think one of the things that this sub fails at frequently is buying into the feminist 1:1 men and women are the same narratives.

“Women get a sexual abuse center. Why don’t men have one?”

Not that it doesn’t happen, but it’s not a rampant issue for men, where it can be for women because they’re vulnerable.

Recognize men and women are different and have different problems. Don’t just be reactionary because feminists suck.

on average a similar amount of men have reported being made to penetrate (male rape despite whatever bullcrap legal jargon they use to weasel away from it) as women being raped and even in 2012 specifically a slightly larger amount of men reported it more than women. this flies in the face of your initial claim of it being much greater for women.

[–]ExMuzzy 17 points18 points19 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Women's services were funded by the government since DV and sexual abuse were framed as a women's issue by feminist and domestic violence groups to acquire funding for their organisations. I don't see why men's shelters should be an exception.

AFAIK, only gender neutral organisations recieve government funding now in the UK. Before someone brings it up, gender neutral organisation does not mean gender neutral shelters. Women's Aid tried protesting against this but failed. Must say that I still haven't seen any male shelters but that may be because this was a recent change.

[–]EngineerWorth2490 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why exactly is this a problem? JK Rowling is a woman supporting a shelter for women…only.

Admittedly, I can’t imagine cause for this story to significantly impact men’s rights in any way shape or form. Can someone fill me in here?

If the issue is inclusion, launching a sex abuse center for women that includes men seems problematic to me for many reasons, but the primary reason being that inclusion of men-regardless of their story during a time where victims of abuse are particularly vulnerable would totally undermine the trauma those women have experienced at the hands of abusive men…even to the point that women requiring assistance may avoid the center entirely.

Where I live (US, but in my specific state) advocacy support centers; specifically those functioning like shelters are gender-specific. Even our court-ordered-diversion programs and batterer intervention programs designed to rehab perpetrators of DV/SV are non-mixed, gender specific. Female abusers are required to attend all female LGBTQ BIP groups (W-W & W-M violence) and male abusers are req’d to attend all-male BIP groups (M-W) and (I believe) LGBTQ male abusers are req’d to attend all-male LGBTQ BIP groups (M-M). To my knowledge, with 10 or less total reported cases of W on M IPV-specifically SV cases reported over the last few years, the one group that doesn’t exist (but should because woman perpetrated IPV is particularly significant here when factoring for W-perp’ed DV in general) is a non-mixed gender specific all-female BIP group specifically addressing W on M perp’ed violence.

The only centers here that are inclusive of all genders, are those with advocacy services specific to Domestic Violence victims & IPV that occurs in a domestic setting. They do help victims of non-IPV related crimes especially by providing Legal services specific to non-IPV cases, but all-inclusive centers for all victims primarily serve as a hub for groups willing to provide gender-specific satellite services at smaller outreach centers.

That said, there is an underwhelming amount of regional advocacy services dedicated specifically to heterosexual men as victims of W-M perpetrated DV/SV in my state. Regional/decentralized advocacy programs catering to male victims are primarily focused on male LGBTQ victims (M-M violence)—although there are a few that offer mixed-gender group therapy for ALL heterosexual victims and others dedicated to ALL LGBTQ victims non-specific to gender. However, there are no women-perpetrated male victim groups that I am currently aware of, but plenty of M-W female-victim ONLY support/advocacy groups. I suppose I attributed the prevalence of available resources in my state as a function directly related to crime victimization relevance/state-wide reporting in order to accurately predict demand for a particular service. This theory would explain why W-M male victimization advocacy services are so low that services for male victims are typically included with other groups.

In the case of JK Rowling; if she was building a center exclusively for women by women in my state, would I have an issue with that? No.

Would I prefer a private citizen fund a private center exclusively for straight men victimized by women? Absolutely, but JK Rowling hypothetically spending her money on a private institution to support a cause specifically affecting a different demographic would not stoke any sense of opposition or disdain for the author for not hypothetically supporting my cause.

As a victim of W-perp’ed DV and SV, it would be nice to be able to have a place specifically dedicated to my experience helping me make sense of my emotions—already largely influenced by social misconceptions and social stigma—that would make things much easier to accept and aid in my recovery if I were surrounded by other individuals that I could more closely identify with. While the trauma experienced may differ person to person, being able to relate with other straight men who experienced violence and abuse specifically by a woman, dealing with the reality of the experience having advocates that I could engage me without simply seeing a victim making any assumptions about my sexuality or my gender that reflect any of the myths largely held by society is an extraordinary service that mixed group scenarios—whatever that may be simply cannot provide or address. Having advocacy groups available that share the same experience on the same basic level of shared identity establishes a greater sense of trust and acceptance that unfortunately cannot be matched any other way. It took me a very long time to even accept what I had been through myself before I even attempted to open up about it to anyone and unsurprisingly, the same rules didn’t apply to straight male victims of female DV/SV and a significant amount of victim blaming—even from one female therapist—significantly delayed and actually reversed progress I had made in my own, leading me to question my own truth.

So as far as JK Rowling privately opening up a sex abuse center and wanting to run it privately for women, by women fearing possible issues arising from being all-inclusive; I think that is an extremely reasonable thing for a person with a particular identity that wants to help people matching her particular identity that have experienced similar particular types of abuse by similarly particular people of another particular identity to do and by funding her venture privately, I see no reason why or how that would affect men or men’s rights in any way shape or form.

TLDR; As far as I’m concerned, a private person investing their own money in a sex abuse center dedicated to any specific demographic women, men, silverback gorilla, etc. is that persons personal choice and completely 100% irrelevant to men’s rights.

I'm not saying women don't sexually abuse people. If a little boy was raped by a woman I would have no problem with him only working with the male rape crisis staff until he became comfortable enough around women to receive care from them.

Not every charity focused on helping women should be viewed as an attack on men. There are several charities for male sexual abuse survivors (Most of which are launched by women), but we don't hear women pretending that somehow is an attack on them.

It has the potential to create a phobia of men, because by blaming "a man", and as pathetic as I am about to sound, as I do have point, we aren't blaming a person, we are blaming a whole gender. We should be seeking out any and all individuals who have a passion for providing post traumatic event care, because they will do the best job.

Sure a man did commit the crime, but by stating "a man" did it instead of saying "that man" did it, we begin to blame an adjective instead of a noun. If that wasnt clear, the statement places the blame on a whole gender, rather than an individual by saying "a man did it".

Not having any trust worthy men around or making it seem like you have to be in a "male free zone" to be safe from sexual abuse, is the start to the creation of a phobia of men.

Little bit off topic but it's just so depressing to see what Joanne Rowling has turned into. Just to be clear, I'm not defending her or her politics at all, but it's worth noting that JK Rowling has written a surprising lot about male sexual assault. It's a plot point for multiple characters in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which was possibly the first time in my life that I was confronted with the idea that female-on-male rape can be a thing. Sure, it's not much but compared to the utter lack of mention this usually gets in most fantasy stories it might as well be a truckload to have it happen to not just one but two characters.

So the qualifications for the job include having a vagina? Not sure how UK law views this, but I am sure there is a “vaginal carve out” to exclude any men from ever working there (not that we would want to, but….).

And also, ignoring male abuse survivors again….

The worst thing men cant even cheat it by saying theyre women. Thats why terfs are the worst. They basically want only privileged women who were lucky to be born women to be treated with privileges

Given how women need their own safe space from toxic (aka all) men we could help them by creating our own clubs so we can be kept out of public… they’ll love that… how about a golf club? Let’s call it Augusta? Women should cheer that those predators have their own place… oh yeah, nope forgot about feminist hypocrisy

I don't see the problem. If she is funding it she can serve the demographic she wants. If it was a public center that said women only, that's a totally different issue

[+]martinbv95 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

You know. Sexual abuse towards women is at least historically more common, and it is also assumed more harmful to a woman, than a man. That is not to say there should'nt be help for men, just that it is not wrong to open one for women, especially not if those who work there specialize in abuse towards women and how to handle that, as abuse towards women in many cases would be different from abuse towards men. Abuse towards men is also very real and something that needs to be addressed, but not necessarily on the same foundings as abuse towards women. So, you know, as long as this center for women includes all women, and not just. White, Middle class women in heterosexual relationships. I see no problem with it. Not everything has to be gender neutral, although it is a political wiev that it should.

Sexual abuse towards women is at least historically more common

this has been considered questionable as of late the only thing that's actually confirmed is its commonly said to be more common there a difference

[+]martinbv95 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No, historically it is absolutely more common. You have to remember that the woman had no right to her own life. She could not own property or work, the man in his own private home could do as he please, the woman had no say, no way to escape. Usually she would marry someone her father deemed fit, even though one often did it in the appearance of free will. Where would this woman go should the man begin to abuse her? hit her? etc..? She couldn't make it on her own in that world, because there were no women in work, she was completley dependent on that man who she had married. Today the world is different though, and it is here abuse towards men becomes relevant, not just between men, but also from women to men. It is not true that all men will like all women, just as all women will not like all men. Sure, some will learn of this earlier time in school and think, we as women need to seek revenge, but I don't think that is the right answer, and at least that men shouldn't let that happen. A woman touching a man, especially in private areas when he does not want that is definetly abuse, there's also all sorts of abuse towards men that hides behind believes that abuse is something only men do. Arousal of the penis does not necessarily mean that yes I want you to touch me, or yes I want you on top of me, and ontop of that there is also this 'stick a hole in the condom' thing so that the man will make a baby without knowing, that is not alright. Just because the man got a boner dosen't mean he wants you, arousal of the penis can be very easy, and especially at earlier ages, say teens, it will happen at random. It never means a Yes touch me, unless the man says so, or gives you the go in another way.

[–]Jumping3 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My point is its never been questioned until the 21st century of male rape so its unclear how common it was back then

[–]Saerain 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's so fascinating to watch as feminists panic about effects of feminism and use it to justify more feminism because it means we're not feminist enough.

Reminiscent of some other infamous ideologies.

Women supporting women is a great thing. Let them go their own way and do what they have to for happiness.

Men supporting men is a great thing. Let them go their own way and do what they have to for happiness.

Well done to JK advocating for women who have suffered sexual violence in the past.

If only men would step up and advocate for other men in the same way. Where are the male organised and led groups??

We should just step up and create our own sex abuse centre. Can we not do that?

Oh wait, I forgot that woman are responsible for comforting us emotionally and creating safe spaces for us.

/S.

What a stupid thing to complain about. We are just as capable as women in making the effort. That doesn't mean we should shoot down a woman who is helping other women.

Where are the rich powerful male role models? All with their heads in the sand.
