This is a pretty common feminist tactic. So common I'm sure it has a name but I can't think of it at the moment.

Basically take something shitty that happens to either gender, like being made fun of for being smart, pretend only women are harassed for this and men are celebrated for it.

You'll naturally be able to find plenty of examples of this happening to women. And you can denounce anyone who finds the same number of examples of it happening to men with "mansplaining" or screaming "what about teh menz!?!?" or accusing him of hating women.

No one in the 'gifted and talented' program had very many friends at all. As everyone knows, it is the jocks who have the most friends and the geeks get nothing, other than bullied of course.

The only validity to this I can see, at least for me as a nerdy male, was that nobody had a problem with me. Sure, I didn't have that many true friends, but even bullies only picked on us because we were there at the wrong place, at the wrong time, and we were easy targets. I knew a kid in middle school who was bullied relentlessly for years for being a nerd, eventually the bullying got so bad that he had a nervous breakdown and left the school. A few years later all of the girls were into that "I'm such a neeeerd" crap, one of the guys who bullied him even came to school on book day dressed as Link from Legend of Zelda (he thought his name was Zelda).

Hmmmmm. The valedictorian at my school was one of the most "popular" girls at my school. She was attractive and well liked amongst the students and teachers. Speaking from personal experience, the gifted and talented group I was in while in grade school had an even split or popular to non-popular for BOTH genders. It's a small sample size of about 12 total, but I'd still put it a notch above anecdotal.

Im just saying from MY experience and as someone pretty young this was true. At the same time all the smart kids were the ones who were driven and had charisma and played all the sports. The smart girls I know werent shunned anymore or less, it just seemed the dumber seeming ones were the popular kids. Again aligorical.

I'm sorry, but the boys viewed as the most popular were those on the sports teams, not those with the A grades. We were the bottom of the barrel, socially. We were treated worse than the students who could barely read - some of whom, as it happens, were on the sports teams.

What made you a popular boy was strength and sporting prowess. What made you a popular girl was your looks.

Gifted and talented doesn't necessarily mean grade wise or intelligence wise. It could be referring to athletic talent or even the success of their promiscuity in which case, my high school lived up to the truth in this tweet. The football players are always the most popular. And "dumb" women are pursued much more than intelligent women who can think for themselves. So I guess it's not that wrong.

Tbh nerd =/= gifted and talented. Nerd usually has the connotation of somehow being socially inept as well as intelligent.

All the men I've known since grade school who were gifted/talented as well as sociable/charismatic were always pretty popular, and went on to be pretty successful.

edit: to all the "nerds" that downvoted me, go ahead. keep telling yourself that you're "intelligent" and "gifted", and that your lack of success is only because you were lazy in grade school. that the reason you weren't accepted into an ivy league school is because you either didn't try hard enough, or you didn't have the networking, or you simply weren't wealthy enough. keep seeing yourself as a victim of circumstance.

people who are truly intelligent are intelligent enough to know that you need certain qualities to be successful. just because you try to develop those qualities doesn't mean you're a mindless sheep thats living by society's ideals. it means you know what you want in life and you're going to get it. nobody cares how intelligent or gifted you are if you don't have the results to prove it.
