I got a hormonal IUD and it was pretty excruciating pain. I have a high pain tolerance, and had to take the day off work. My hormones are fucked, I feel lightheaded and spacey all the time. My disassociation has gotten significantly worse. All for what? A guy who it didn’t work out with.
Now I’m deciding to leave it in until it’s “expiry date” because I can’t bare to think of the pain removing it. We mutilate our bodies for men who do not care about us.

in the same boat here sis 😭 The IUD was one of the most traumatising experiences of my life. It was so painful I started throwing up everywhere - was so embarrassing. I don’t think I left the DR’s office until several hours later, still throwing up and constantly felt like I had to pee, like my body was rejecting it.
I too feel weird since getting it, very spacey and it’s nice knowing I’m not the only one.
All for a dumbass scrote that didn’t even last.
REGRET getting the IUD so much. Just like you I can’t bear for it to be taken out. I think I’ll demand to be put under general anaesthetic lol

I had a copper IUD. Terrible experience with the insertion.
I pulled it out myself. Easy peasy. Was no worse than a tampon. Was having constant BV, PID type infections due to the copper. Insurance wanted like $200 out of pocket for the doctor to remove it. Both doctor & nurse went, "yeah, you're absolutely not supposed to remove it yourself. But IF you were a terrible patient & did it anyway AMA, here's what you'd want to do..." 🤣
Basically, timed it to my period so my cervix was open. Also did it in late afternoon while urgent care would be open just in case. I'm not exaggerating; the itching & inflamation I'd suffered for years went away 20 minutes after I yanked that puppy.
I don't say this to necessarily imply that you should pull yours yourself. Just that the removal may go a hell of a lot smoother than the insertion. Good luck!

Check if you can get a Cooper IUD. They're non-hormonal and last for a long time. This, in addition to condoms will keep you safe.
You should avoid getting abortions (I'm NOT a prolifer, I'm pro-choice fyi) because they're a real pain in the arse and if you're in USA, they might become harder to obtain as times goes on. I'm not sure of the medical impacts of abortion.
Personnally Ive given up BC totally and I'm waiting for a tubal ligation (permanent birth control).

Just be careful. The copper IUD can be terrible. I had one. It was evil. The last few years I had it were non-stop UTIs, BV, & finally PID. It is possible that it is what led to me developing lichen schlerosis. But doctors kept telling me, oh, no hormones, it's perfectly safe. And I believed them. And my periods lasted a week & were often so heavy they required tampons AND pads.
Ultimately, I yanked it out myself. That thing looked like something raised from the wreck of the Titantic. I have pics of it somewhere still. Most of the coils had disintegrated. My doctor was freaked out after I showed it to her & wanted me to go for an ultrasound to check for bits of copper floating around in my uterus. I never did - insurance wouldn't cover it.
All of the nasty pelvic itching, burning, etc stopped 20 minutes after I yanked that stupid thing out. The copper works by altering the chemistry of the lining of the uterus. Based on chat groups & blogs I found, it apparently irritates the crap out of the entire reproductive system for a not insignificant # of women.

My OB told me she wouldn't recommend the copper IUD to someone who has heavy periods and low iron (check on both). Looks like the only effective way is getting tubes tied. Even that can have its risks. Coworker who had it told me to avoid it as she had issues (I was single then and didn't ask her I details).

I didn't have heavy periods until I got the Paraguard. And the crazy thing? I removed it about halfway thru my period. It stopped later that night. Period now lasts about 36 hours.

Birth control sides effects aren't even well explained by the doctors ime, and from others experiences. One woman got breast cancer and she seriously thinks it was caused by her birth control she took for many many years.

I had a friend who is a medical professional who got Essure & loved it. A previous OB/GYN talked it up, too. I looked at the liturature & thought, err, I don't know about this. Nickel allergies are so common. It seemed like a recipe for disaster. And sure enough...

I suspect it depends on several factors, including whether or not you're sensitive to copper in general. Essure, which was billed as a less invasive alternative to a tubal ligation, relied on the body reacting to nickel coils. As a jeweler, I thought it seemed sketchy -- so many people have nickel allergies. And sure enough, Essure hurt enough women to get called off the market after a class action suit. Yet, a friend who is a medical professional got Essure and loved it.
Fewer people are sensitive to copper than nickel, fortunately. If it's working for you, I say keep rolling with it! It's more that I wanted to get my story out there so that if someone does experience weird symptoms they'll know to consider the IUD as a factor because they're likely to be told that can't be. My doctor was actually more openly critical than most of the copper IUD. Yet i don't think it fully clicked until I pulled the zip lock baggie containing the corroded remains of my Paraguard out of my purse to show her.

I got off the pill after 20 years on it because of the horrible damage it did to my body. I'm for condoms and even pulling out with the condom. I also track my cycle using an app and I never thought I'd ever say this but I rely a lot on abstinence. If I'm even near ovulating it's a hell no.

Could you elaborate more about what you've been reading that it does to hormones?
I'm curious mostly because doctors keep trying to push BC on me. I've tried 7 different brands/types and the side effects are always really unfortunate (mostly acne, nausea, and headaches). I wish more doctors understood that altering your hormones isn't pleasant for many people.

Most doctors don't care. They just want to push the drugs. When I got my implant out (it was an absolute NIGHTMARE that NEVER got better) the doctor repeatedly asked me if I wanted to just keep it and add more medication to help with the issues I was having. My absolute and loudly vocalized relief to have an appt to get it out didn't phase her one damn bit. If I didn't need the damn thing out I would've given her a piece of my mind for harassing me about keeping it.

I gave up the pills and got a copper IUD some years ago, also because of problems with hormones. My boyfriend at the time always used condoms also, I like to combine 2 methods all the time because abortion is not legal in my country (except in cases of rape).
I like the IUD because I don't really have to do anything, and it lasts 10 years.

I have a hormonal IUD(Mirena) it’s good for 5 years I’m on my second one. I love it, for me at least I don’t have a period on it and haven’t in years. It’s highly effective. We do use condoms as well as my conditions to ditching condoms is long term exclusive and we each have a clean STI test. I quite like my IUD, and hormone wise I’m far more stable than when I was on the pill.
However it’s definitely a personal choice.

Even if you're on BC it is very irresponsible not to use condoms. Stop using condoms when you want a child, its just not safe otherwise. I have a small hormonal IUD simply because I don't want a period, and we use condoms 100% of the time because we BOTH take responsibility for birth control.

Tell him to get a vasectomy. Either he gets a vasectomy or don't have sex. You aren't married, and sex is NEVER a requirement either way. Why are you already having sex with him, and why are you sacrificing your body for HIS pleasure. There is no reason to pump yourself full of hormones and irritate your whole reproductive system, all while raising your chances of getting cancer, because a man doesn't want to pull out. Not to mention, why isn't he already using condoms? Birth control is not failproof, and can lead to a fetus developing outside the womb (needs to be aborted, or you and it will die.) What is wrong with him? He isn't even using condoms; how can you trust him with your health. You're still meant to use condoms with birth control, to prevent a pregnancy. If you don't want to have kids with this man, don't have sex with him. If abortion was banned tomorrow, you got pregnant, and the baby was found to be likely to have several disabilities due to his incompatible genes, would you be fine with raising the kid? Abortion is not the go-to. It's still pumping you full of hormones because your bf is too selfish to either get a vasectomy or not orgasm anywhere near your privates. If you want to be childfree, back to the vasectomy. He is already showing LV behaviour by not using condoms for HIS pleasure.

My ONLY negative side effect is that i spot longer than usual, sometimes 3 days instead of my normal 1 day. But my period itself isnt heavier than normal.
Granted I'm not having sex right now so its kinda pointless, but when i was actively having sex, it was a good tradeoff for me

Similar experience here. Was pretty worried about getting it put in due to the overwhelmingly negative internet feedback, but I cannot tolerate hormones so figured this was my last resort before I gave up. It's been 3 years and the only side effect I have is 2 or 3 days of very light spotting before my period. No heavy periods, no extra cramps, no infections.
I will say that I have never had heavy periods though, so I was probably a good candidate for it.

There isn't a bc on the market that won't fk you up on some level. I took a low dose bc back in my 20s and my hair fell out for months after I stopped. I had bald spots. So many horror stories about IUD and implants. Never again.

Has anyone used a diaphragm before? I've never used hormonal birth control, refuse to, and have always used condoms in the past
But to be honest, I would like to try without condoms since it feels better (I would be doing it for me). I've tried different condoms and I find them uncomfortable and eventually it starts hurting
I'm only intimate with a long term partner, so not worried about STIs

My period cramps are bad, but when I ovulate, it feels like I'm getting jabbed with a long needle. It took my breath out this morning.

I’m sorry for your ovulation pain!! That sounds awful. I just have regular cramps but I found there are other options for managing pain. I went to a physical therapist for pelvic pain. Yes, uncomfortable. But she taught me how to manage my cramps at home. And diet changes, my libido is drastically reduced when I cut back on fatty foods. Not sure if there is another way to reduce ovulation pain but google the shit out of it, try everything, and do not be afraid to keep going to different doctors until someone offers you something worthwhile. My personal experience BC totally fucked my cycle and made me depressed and gain a ton of weight. I would never do it again. But it, like everything else, was worth a try. We’re all different!

Look into Vitex herbal supplements. It helped me a lot with ovulation pain. I'd hurt before, during, and after ovulation. Peri menopause is really messing with me.

I like the mini pill. It basically creates a mucus plug that sperm can't get through. It doesn't have estrogen and you can quit anytime without major side effects. It's the only birth control I'd ever take after suffering the side effects of the traditional pill years ago.

I was on a low-dose formula of the pill for years then switched to the nuvaring bc it's supposed to have a fraction of the dose of the lowest dose pill. Definitely noticed a difference. I've been rolling with it ever since.
Female barrier methods are uncomfortable, expensive and/or extremely hard to find. The sponge is pretty much gone, sheets and gels can cause irritation and Ive never seen a female condom for sale anywhere. And good luck trying to get a diaphragm/cervical cap in the US; demand is so low that you'll rarely find both a gyno equipped to fit you for one and a pharmacy that carries it.
I thought about long term options like implanon and the iud but decided against it. I heard implanon makes you gain a LOT of weight. Idk how I'd feel with a piece of metal in my body and iirc iuds work best for women who've given birth before. And I don't want to risk ending up in the position that I'm unable to get to the gyno to have them removed if I needed to.
I'm also pro abortion. The key to minimizing risks is keeping close track of your period so you'll know if you're pregnant right away. I think the medical option is only available if you're less than 2 months along and the earliest you'd get a positive pregnancy test is at about 1 month.
Regardless of the moral issues, if having an unplanned baby would significantly hinder achieving your goals (the dirty secret that isn't discussed enough is that there's a strong possibility that it would) then abortion might be the best decision.

If you're in the US, a vasectomy is an out patient procedure that's fairly non invasive (tiny incisions) that can be done as quickly as 30 mins and is reversable.
You could also look into the Skyla IUD. This releases a very small amount of localized hormones to minimize the possibility of hormones screwing you up.
There is also the copper IUD, but VERY heavy periods are a side effect of it. Like going through a super sized tampon in an hour or less. The kind of period where if it comes when you're out and you don't have several pads or tampon, you can't make do w/ toilet paper. That side effect is supposed to calm down after 6 months but I've got a friend on it and it has not.

I haven't tried this personally, but I've heard good things about Natural Cycles. It tracks your temperature so you know when you're fertile. On days you're fertile, don't have PIV. So if you combine this and condoms, you should be fine :)
A big positive is that instead of fighting against your body's natural rhythm, you're observing it and making decisions for yourself. It will have no impact on your body, but it will improve the amount you know about your body.
