Kinda depends on what the percentages are of men and women in that field. If there's like 1% women journalists but 19% of murdered journalists are women then that's a problem. But given how they didn't give that number too I'd reckon it's not the case
[–]Sardonislamir 122 points123 points124 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Yea, the reason we see percentages used is not for accuracy, but emotional impact. Percentages feel HUGE. They can be the margin of thousands to millions... Or just 1.

Women are always the majority of victims. We'll just assume all those men were married to women. Those women are victims because they lost their husbands. So 💯% of journalists dying only affected women negatively. The men are dead so they don't matter and it's always tragic for a woman to die. #everydayfeminism
I'm told we live in a patriarchy. Shittiest patriarchy ever. It's like the entire concept is a conspiracy theory that can be debunked in seconds by an Anencephalic individual.
[–]1squidwardtortellini 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Not true at all. Men are the majority victims of violent crime, workplace deaths and combat deaths. Men are more likely to be the victim while women are more likely to claim themselves as victimized

[–]Mode1961 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
We make fun of this comment but there is a comment by the UN and other organizations that is actually much worse IMHO. The claim that men dying early is actually sexism against women because now women have a higher percentage of "unhealthy years of life".
They use this in one of the reports where countries are rated for equality and they set the 'equality' mark for life expectancy at 5 years. So if women outlive men by 4 years or less, women in that country are considered disadvantaged.
[–]WasabiPirates 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Could you site a link? I’m trying to find what you’re talking about and can’t so far but I really want to read more into this!
[–]Mode1961 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Here is a good starting point
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Gender_Gap_Report
I believe this is the info I was referring to.
Health and survival – outcomes on life expectancy and sex ratio. In this case, parity is not assumed, there are assumed to be fewer female births than male (944 female for every 1,000 males), and men are assumed to die younger. Provided that women live at least six percent longer than men, parity is assumed. But if it is less than six percent it counts as a gender gap.
Think about that last sentence, if women in a country are living 6% or MORE that is called parity if they are living 5% or less that is a disadvantage for women.

Yeah but men are spendable, and it's enforced as an unwritten rule by society. Nobody seems to have an equality issue over this. So only those 19% are the ones that really matter, not that journalists (men and women, you know , human beings) die while doing their job which is horrible for any gender.... bu the fact only the 19% of women are pointed out speaks lengths about "women are frail, valuable and need to be protected" and "men spendable meatshield".

Actually, the original report ( http://undocs.org/A/72/290) absolutely admits that. In fact, the report not only states that men are the majority of murdered journalists, they are a higher % of journalists mudered (in 2017, 24% of reporters are ladies but represent 19% of deaths).
This is a super shitty infographic (assuming it was published by itself and not part of a series) because it ignores a lot more data in that report (sexual assault while in the field, pay differences, inability to access justice bc of local laws). It's certainly not what I would have chosen to highlight global violence against women. I have no idea what intern decided to focus on the one piece of info in 19 pages where global high-risk reporting is better for women than men, but damn.

Interesting how when women are the minority of victims (like with this) it's made into a women's issue
And yet when men are the minority of victims (like they're believed to be with sexual assault) it's also made into a women's issue
[–][deleted] 47 points48 points49 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
To be fair, issues like suicide are often made a men's issue. But you never see men's issues caused by women advertised. The men's issues feminists will agree upon will be also caused by men - e.g unfair sentencing for prison lengths
[–]AssAssIn46 17 points18 points19 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Mens suicide is probably the men's issue that gets the most attention yet it's not even a fraction of the attention that some women's issues get. In the UK suicide in the biggest killer of men under 40 (I think, can't remember the exact age) yet there are no major campaigns for it year round like there are for many women's issues.

I think it depends what percentage of journalists are women. Particularly those in dangerous areas. If there are 10x more men there but only 5x more men dying then it makes sense. I assume that's what it going for, maybe there's a second graphic somewhere? Or it's jus a bad design.
I mean women to get targeted in some countries so I wouldn't be surprised if it's true. I think this is just r/crappydesign

[–]treebeard189 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Perish the thought of ever giving them the benefit of the doubt. You’re talking about a radical group with Marxist views that generated an entire dictionary of jargon with the explicit intent of shutting out dissent. Groups like that never deserve the benefit of the doubt.
[–]AssAssIn46 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I mean yeah that could be the case. But this was specifically designed to evoke the thought that 19% of the victims being women is too high. They purposely didn't say what percentage of journalists are women because that'd negatively impact their goal.
[–]revenueperadventure 512 points513 points514 points 8 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link
I fail to see the intended meaning in this UN Women PSA. Are they saying that the 19% number is too high, and it should be lowered? If so, that has evil implications. Are they saying that women are contributing to journalism in high risk situations as well, just not as much as men? I truly am curious as to the meaning this is supposed to convey.
A journalist being killed is a tragedy that has nothing to do with gender. Creating a demarcation of a tragedy’s severity using gender is heinous.

I attended an international Conference about male victims of sexual violence in the southern hemisphere. There were two speakers in particular there that came from different countries that said very openly that research into male victims in war zones is not funded nor is it considered in UN deliberations about sexual assault.
They both said it is long term entrenched feminists that are blocking this from happening.
Both said that there is likely as much sexual abuse happening against the men. In developing countries where the one does research he said his are much more likely to experience sexual assault as thru aren't protected as much in the native belief that it won't happen to them.

[–]oursland 40 points41 points42 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
The term "useful idiots" doesn't actually suggest these people are naive; they have their goals and know the consequences.
However, they're useful because if the likes of China, Iran, Saudi Arabia or any other totalitarian regime were to simply state they want to control the Internet to "sanitize" it, then others in the UN would object. Now they have a pretty face and politically correct cause they can hide behind, the UN will accept these thought censorship campaigns with open arms.
[–]FeierInMeinHose 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Useful idiots definitely does imply that they don’t know the people using them have ulterior motives. Useful idiots are people who firmly believe something because they’re told it’s correct by someone else who has an ulterior motive.
If you know that they’re using you, you’re not a useful idiot.

They're not using the likes of Sarkeesian and Quinn, no one is manipulating them. The UN and member states are providing them a venue and promoting their message.
As far as Sarkeesian and Quinn are concerned, they're using the UN and member states to further their goals. It happens to also further the goals of totalitarian regimes, which is convenient.

Considering the UN represents all countries, it makes sense that they would have some feminist stuff going on.
Not every country is a western nation where women and men have, on paper, equal rights.
Isn't r/mensrights always saying that feminists need to focus more on actual oppressed women in the third world?
[–]superhobo666 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, that's what we say.
Too bad feminism in the UN is only focused on speech censorship and control in the first world, and the only countries the majority of feminists are forcing their ideals on are countries that already had equal rights and equal representation for women.
Feminism is about supremacy, if it was about equal rights feminists would be campaigning to change things in the third world, not campaigning to limit speech and the rights of men in western countries.
[–]killcat 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well that's where intersectionality comes in, as "those other countries" are "not white" any action would be "oppression of a minority".

The UN does do development work for women in developing countries that are pretty bad for women. That's feminism, the good old fashioned kind. I'm not sure what arm of the UN deals with censorship and supression of men.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
True, but killing more journalists is not the way to go.
[–]AssAssIn46 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
That should be the route to go if you're using the 50/50 equality of outcome logic. The image is trying to say we need to reduce the number of female journalists killed because 19% is too high when it should be the other way round. Reduce number of male journalists killed because 81% is too high. Even then, targeting by gender is plain wrong. Reduce journalists deaths regardless of gender, that should be the goal.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'm replying to shadowknuxem's comment about if they want equality. They suggested that, if the UN wants true equality, more female journalists need to die. That would work for equality, but it would result in more deaths. Killing less male journalists would be harder, but it would also result in equality and less deaths. Of course, the UN doesn't want true equality. They want what feminists want-privileges without responsibilities.

The Boy Scouts has always been about teaching children to be mature well balanced adults by teaching them responsibility and teamwork and exposing them to various possibilities for their prospective careers. If these same teachings can be extended to girls as well as boys I think both will be better off for it.
[–]DallasTruther 21 points22 points23 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]skunkboy72 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You think this was the Girl Scouts idea? The one group that is most pissed off about letting girls in the Boy Scouts is the Girl Scouts. Both groups have been losing numbers over the last decade. Guess who has the most to lose by the Boy Scouts adding girls?

Do you see the merit behind the argument that if there are women only organizations opening up to help women, then that demonstrates that there is value in organizations that limit their members to one gender, and therefore opening up a male only organization to the opposite gender deprives boys of said benefit?
[–]OldSchoolNewRules 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
Yes but I dont think scouting is the place to plant that flag. Its already unisex in most other countries
fair enough. I don't agree that that's a very good argument for making it unisex, but I see where you're coming from.
[–]AssAssIn46 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
That's completely fine. I'm not on either side of the argument but the point others are trying to make is that there are two groups: Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Instead of making Boy Scouts unisex so girls get to have the same experience as the boys, why not improve the Girl Scots instead?
In another thread I read about experiences from former Girl Scout members and their reasoning for why GS is so bad is because the organisers are unwilling to change it. If that's the problem, why not tackle that instead of ignoring it and giving the responsibility to another group?
[–]xfritz5375 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts planned to merge before, but Girl Scouts were unwilling to do so. Girl Scouts didn’t just give Boy Scouts the responsibility so they didn’t have to, Girl Scouts were unwilling to improve, so Boy Scouts just let anyone in.
[–]AssAssIn46 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

It doesn’t affect males that girls are allowed in Boy Scouts. Girl Scouts doesn’t matter to employers, being an Eagle Scout does.
[–]Based_Hootless 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
It’s up to you to change that, Karen. Make the Gold Award meaningful. Don’t destroy a boy’s opportunity to be a boy.
[–]hiesatai 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
It's not destroying a boy's opportunity to be a boy. That boy has the same opportunity he's always had. But now girls are also allowed to earn one of the most prestigious awards a child can earn. This doesn't take away from the clout that Eagle carries, just opens up the opportunity to earn it to the other half of children.
[–]Based_Hootless 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
The gold award is the exact same thing as earning Eagle, and you know that. Don’t act like Girl Scouts are somehow oppressed or discriminated against. The gold award is a big deal on a college application. But I’m sure you’re just as upset that a girl can’t be star quarterback on the football team. Maybe we should just get rid of football and only allow sports in which women can be competitive? How ridiculous should we get with this?
[–]hiesatai 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
The Gold Award does not carry the same weight as Eagle. Individual troops will also not be co-ed. This is literally not taking anything away from boys, and as an Eagle Scout myself, I look forward to being able to call these girls my sisters some day.
[–]Based_Hootless 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Uhh ok pal, I’m an actual Eagle Scout and we don’t call eachother “brothers.” Lol you’re thinking of Order of the Arrow or something. The gold award is EXACTLY the same as the eagle award in all but name. And idk where you read that troops won’t be coed because it’s pretty clear that this is exactly the plan. https://www.npr.org/2017/10/14/557699254/this-boy-scout-welcomes-girls-to-his-troop
[–]xfritz5375 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
How does it destroy a boy’s opportunity to be a boy? It just allows people to do it regardless of gender. Girl Scouts also doesn’t get to do a lot of the outdoor stuff that Boy Scouts do. There’s many girls who would have loved to do everything Boy Scouts did, but they were forced into Girl Scouts. Now they can join it, and it allows so much more for them.

Wow! 19 is such a big number!
My solution: kill less journalists
Super radical Feminist/misandrist solution: kill more male journalists to make the percentage of killed female journalists smaller
We should follow my solution. That way, we are killing less innocent people.
In all seriousness though, why would they want to help the 19% before the 81%?
[–]Revoran 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Also: why does it matter whether they are men or women? Do women and men journos get killed for different reasons... ? Because I'm pretty sure that when journos get killed it's generally for the same reasons regardless of gender (they went to a conflict zone, or they spoke against the government/crime syndicate).

I'm open to hearing a real reason if anyone has one. Is it a simple case of someone making a mistake and seeing a feminist issue where there isn't one or is it maybe that there is such a low percentage of female journalists that 19% female casualites is a very high number in this circumstance ? Or is there maybe some other reason? If you KNOW please tell me.

I do wonder if this sub is being played at times. The cyclic reposting of horror stories and at times source less posts like this is inciting.
Is it likely this sub and the feminist subs are attacked by paid troll farms?
[–]AssAssIn46 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I've seen this on another sub and that OP posted it to many subs but not this one so I'm assuming OP saw it somewhere else and decided to crosspost it. I thought of crossposting it too but didn't, highly doubt it's a troll.
[–]dontpet 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Sure. I'm not thinking they are a troll, just this happens so often here.
[–]Lethn 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There were one or two moments where a troll got through, so you're right to be sceptical the Huffington Post article tricked me which said that white people shouldn't vote or something but that's because this is the kind of shit that these feminists actually believe so it was so convincing.
Turned out it was somebody just completely screwing with them, but what happened with the Huffington Post was instead of actually realising their mistake or disavowing the article. They went and defended the opinion instead!
That's how bad feminism is, if you make up the most horrible shit you can think of in an effort to screw with them they'll actually adopt it as their own opinion sometimes as long as it's all about hating men or I should say "straight white men" in particular.
I just don't think you and many others outside the sub realise how feminists are, we have to deal with them on a regular basis. Even when they're not telling us we're all misogynistic Incels and try to slander this sub by hopping on over and telling us all we're losers and what we're 'allowed' to talk about.
Obviously they don't use the exact words of 'allowed' but it's very much insinuated in their language. I really encourage anybody who can't believe how bad feminists are to actually research them instead of writing daft posts.

Extract for you then: "For instance, have you heard about the chart of “universal sexual rights” initiated by nothing less than the United Nations, through the IPPF. In fact, they want to educate your children from the age of 5 to their “right for sexuality”. In the resolution foreseen, parents must encourage their children to “use their sexual rights” as soon as possible, and can be punished if they try to prevent their child from being sexually active. Marion Sigaut, a French right wing activist and historian said “since they can’t legalize pedophilia from adults to children, they do it from the children to the adults. After all, after Freud and Kinsey – the biggest frauds of psychology – we all know that everything is about sex and that children also want to enjoy sex”. To this extent, the feminist Jenni Murrayproposes to provide porn classes to children. Well, not for my children."

Unfortunatley. Basically, the article is saying that more female journalists have been killed in 2017 compared to previous years. Nobody's said it yet, but it's islam. Islam hates women, and with islam and terrorism becoming more and more common, even in first world countries, it's no suprise that the number of women journalists dying has incresed. Still, it's bullshit that the 81% of male journalists that have been killed have been ignored.
[–]Wsing1974 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That article states, that even though the TOTAL number of journalists killed went down, and even the total number of WOMEN journalists went down, we shouldn't celebrate because the percentage of women killed went up.

[–]Phiau 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Are they complaining that women were killed, or that there aren't enough female journalists?
I think many of you are ignoring something very obvious.
Feminists advocate for women. This is an example of them doing that. It's also the UN Women group, so it makes sense this is the statistic used.
You have to acknowledge that the lobby groups and advocates for women have worked hard and this has paid off.
MRAs can do the same thing. Be inspired.
[–]eekamike 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
While you are partially right, you're ignoring something vital. Feminism hates the MRM, and also occupies the highest offices in the western world, and is pop culture. We can try to do the same thing, but we're stifled by feminism. In addition, feminists claim to advocate for gender equality when instead what they push for is female empowerment. They claim that they also want to solve men's issues, use that to push back against the MRAs, then work against men's issues. Now I'm not making excuses, what I am saying is that pointing out fallacies in feminism such as this post are important in advocating for men. This is an example of feminism twisting the facts to the detriment of men. As you said, feminists worked so hard to get here... So they can run ads like these that dehumanize men? So that they can support the already embedded idea of male disposability? Stuff like this is much more than advocating for women, it's furthering an established cultural norm that hurts men.
If you really think it's as simple as being inspired to advocate for men's issues, I suggest you watch The Red Pill movie. It's free on Amazon Prime!
This ad is not dehumanizing men. It isn't about men. It is advocating for women, which is what UN Women is about. I never said it was easy. Nothing worthwhile is easy. It requires commitment and perseverance. Don't you think feminists faced the same pushback when they first started from what was then the status quo? I'm aware of the move and have seen parts of it. It doesn't change my thinking on the subject.

Ok. Check this out. They say 19 is too high. What this is really saying is that we want the number to be zero. You then realize what that means right? It means, in the very least implies that should women be zero, men would have to be 100 percent. See, when you're talking gender disparity in statistics like this, it doesn't help your cause when you insist that your goal is to help one gender and not the other. It is a callous omission.
Yes. It is offensive.

"With fewer active conflicts taking place around the world this year, the number of journalists killed on the job in 2017 fell from 2016.... And while that is certainly good news, it’s not quite cause for celebration."

It's called reading between the lines and you learn to do it when you turn 6. So how old are you?
[–]FreshAsBasil 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yeah I’m 20 years old in university. I’m pretty sure my reading skills are proficient and it really looks like they’re saying that having journalists killed period, is still a problem even though their deaths went down from 2016. They don’t even mention women in the quote you gave me... You argue that they are implying that more men should be killed in war zones over women through this quote but I see nothing in the context of the article that supports this. They actually argue the opposite and that women should be assigned to these war zones more often. Your argument has no merit, and you also failed to address points 2 and 3.
[–]Wsing1974 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You're in university? You should get your money back, because they've obviously failed to teach you critical comprehension skills.

It's called feeding your victim complex.
Don't worry, women will always be the alpha victims, that position is secure.

The dead male journalists were just faking it for attention, and exaggerated their own deaths. /s
[–]MuShuGordon -5 points-4 points-3 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
"Gender equality" of women. So they are campaigning for an even 50/50 split of men/women killed every year while in journalism related fields? Or are they campaigning for more men to be killed with respect to the number of women killed, therefore decreasing the ratio?
[+]Ghost4000 -10 points-9 points-8 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
They're campaigning for less deaths overall while also bringing to attention the deaths of women. It's not rocket science you'd have to try to be offended by this shit.
[–]MuShuGordon 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
That's not what is being told here, not one bit. They are pushing for more men deaths and not giving a damn about some third wave "equality" bullshit. Women die, men die, humans die, planets die. But by working towards one, openly, and not the other, that's just hypocrisy and bullshit. You know it.

You’re really stupid and over analyzing the picture and just trying to find what you want to hear. Fact is white men are not discriminated against. Just cause life is hard for you doesn’t mean it’s cause you’re white and male, it’s probably because you’re ugly tbh. Source: am white male who goes outside.
[–]MuShuGordon 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I guess Costa Ricans are white now. Thanks though dude.
[–]FreshAsBasil -4 points-3 points-2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

because it's impossible to be racist against white people obviously and is that still a good insult? "am white male who goes outside." you sound like a fucking retard dude, please go outside and jump off a bridge while you're at it
[–]FreshAsBasil 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You are the only person who’s response I have respected so far. We need more arguers like us who take the strongest point the opposition is trying to make and argue against that instead of any vagueness in their argument and I love your banter so thanks for engaging as a person who honestly believes in this and not as someone who is attaching themselves to this movement for other reasons. I am reading it back and realize that yeah I do sound like a retard but my point remains that this graphic in no way suggests that more male journalists should be dying instead of women journalists do you agree with me on that at least?
But there was fewer deaths overall....
[+]FreshAsBasil -11 points-10 points-9 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
This post is retarded and the thread is filled with retards. This is demagogic rhetoric and you’re just trying to fan the flames of anti feminism. I see where you’re coming from but it seems like this is a sect of the UN focused on supporting women’s rights considering much of the world lack human rights in general let alone women’s rights. You’re just trying to paint the whole movement with this one stupid statistic that is completely irrelevant to anything really. Idk why they put it up there and I agree this is stupid but how dare you say “even the UN has been plagued with feminism” trying to stereotype the entire movement with this one picture. I’m a white male and this makes me upset since you fucks over here are making us all look bad. We already have a history of being shitty if you guys really are refusing to even try to understand the other side just shut the fuck up cause that’d be more helpful than you trying to do something. Why be stupid when you can be quiet, you know?
[–]Wsing1974 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You're a male? You know that you could improve this number by becoming a journalist and then getting killed, right?
[+]BadBluud -11 points-10 points-9 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That was UN Women. Why would they post about men?
[–]Commander_Uhltes 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There is no UN Men
Why post anything at all when the results show there is absolutely no problem that specifically harms women here?
