I've never seen a male writer throw himself on his sword in an effort to please his feminist overlords with as much force and gusto as this guy just did.

[+]wisty 10 years ago* [recovered] (4 children) | Copy Link

Nah, the conclusion is basically "Stay away from the icky lower-class men, only a supreme gentleman like me is worth a relationship".

M'arriage.

[–]mwobuddy 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thats how its always been. Women don't want to marry a working non-college man. They consider them beneath her. Some of the nicest most good people are working class. Some of the most evil rotten abusers are upper class and have gotten through college.

its just men being utilitarian objects for women, thats all.

[–]nannuq 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Fine by me. It's easier to be well off when you don't have a shallow freeloading leech sucking away all your money as well as joy and happiness. Honestly the entire article just reinforces the stereotype that women are leeches and provide zero benefit to a relationship. This ass clown also basically just stated that if your aren't this Elite group then by definition you are't a value to society.

The most important person isn't the Doctor or the Lawyer it's the guy that picks up the trash at the end of the day. By all means stop using waste disposal services at all. Once your waste high in your own shit and too stupid to figure out what to do with it don't call the dumb men you genius figure it out yourself.

also I am not in Waste Disposal, but I am humble enough to know what is truly important for society.

Emergency? Don't take the Road those were built by the enemy!!

End Rant regarding the thought process of the author of the article as well as people who think anyone is beneath them.

Any man who gets married today is risking his entire future on the whims of some female. Don't do it.

What is this?

[–]andejoh 27 points28 points29 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes because we know it's always been women who asked. Wait, what? It was always men doing the asking? Men aren't asking women to marry them anymore. How does that equate with women opting out?

[–]eaton80 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Articles about falling marriage rates never give any agency to men.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I see desperation looming from government and society. These attacks on men are a fear by the establishment that men are not going to be fooled any longer. Who is going to do all the work and fight all the wars!

  1. find a sane woman. they do exist.
  2. Dont live in florida
  3. dont live in states that legally encourage hypergamy
  4. get married before your child is born.
  5. have some form of pre-marital contract drafted. dont let her tell me "you dont love me if you want me to sign this"- she should understand that no judge will allow a one sided prenup- its for protecting you both.
  6. Enjoy your life.

[–]Mitthrawnuruodo1337 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Dont live in florida

Why Florida specifically? I'd think such things would be much worse in the progressive bastions of political feminism.

[–]FFXIV_Machinist 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

NOW is rampantly active in florida.

[–]Red_means_go 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Honestly Florida is a horrible state to live in. And my luck with women wasn't any better there, a lot of superficiality and the sun does things to people I guess.

[–]matthew_lane 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

dont live in states that legally encourage hypergamy

Unfortunately that would be any western society with no fault divorce, which is pretty much all of them.

[–]Frobenioid 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

find a sane woman. they do exist.

How can any man know whether he is with a sane (whatever that means) woman? Is there a check list? What are the signs one should be looking out for? Can a woman fake it until she makes it? Can a man know that she will always stay sane? What proportion of women are sane? Can a man judge whether a woman is sane while he is infatuated with her, might his judgement not be clouded by his feelings for her?

have some form of pre-marital contract drafted. dont let her tell me "you dont love me if you want me to sign this"- she should understand that no judge will allow a one sided prenup- its for protecting you both.

What if a judge throws out your carefully crafted pre-nup and you're on the hook? It happens:

  1. Judge throws out prenup bride-to-be was forced to sign
  2. Long Island Woman Wins 'Groundbreaking' Prenup Battle despite cheating on her husband: N.Y. Prenup Battle Winner 'Destroyed' Family With Affair, Cousin Says
  3. Judge Tosses Out Prenup: Dodgers ownership still undecided
  4. U.K. Court May Throw Out Heiress’s Pre-Nuptial Agreement
  5. Lost in translation! Wife in $15million divorce battle with gallery guru wins right to have pre-nup thrown out because it was written in German (she was raised in a German-speaking household, by the way).
  6. Just because Cynthia signed a prenup does not mean a judge won't throw it out, divorce attorneys told ABC News. Airtight prenuptial agreements are rare, and a number of factors can give an angry spouse the means to get out of it.

Men, do not get married. You're putting a fully loaded gun to your head with your wife's finger on the trigger. She can pull the trigger at any time for any reason and she will be applauded for it by society.

[–]FFXIV_Machinist -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

ANY judge will throw out a one sided prenuptial. practically every case you listed contained an agreement that was ridiculously one sided. if your prenup is not giving her a substantial claim to your wealth, it can and will most certainly be thrown out, and she will get ALL of your shit. Give her 25-30% of your assets and no judge is going to throw that out. if you do what most of these cases above did, and give her 0-.01% of your assets, a judge is going to take half or more of your shit and give it to her.

it is the way our world is designed, and is the way it will stay for everyones lifetimes in this sub. take steps to protect your wealth, but do not expect to be onesided and win any kind of court battle.

honestly i think the muslims have it right when it comes to getting married. a woman is paid a lump sum up front that she can do anything with, and if anything happens to the marrige, she has her money, and he has his.

[–]Frobenioid 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So you admit that if a marriage ends in divorce you should be prepared to, at the very least, give up 25-30% of your assets?

And you think this is acceptable?

[–]FFXIV_Machinist 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

yep, and god no. its completely unacceptabble; knowing that however doesnt change the fact of thats how it is, and untill the idea of marrige goes away, or at least they start letting people who arent married, but together have the same tax breakage and benefits, thats the way it will stay.

our legal system is SORELY behind in virtually every facet- technology, drugs, marrige etc. just because i know this doesnt mean i get to go arround pirating everything, smokin weed erry day, and divorcing a woman once im done with her and keeping my shit too.

Why? Its common knowledge that men in marriages are miserable. Its even a running mainstream joke. And some men still want to do it..

[–]jidery 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (35 children) | Copy Link

Its common knowledge that men in marriages are miserable.

Not true at all. I know many happy men with families and wives.

Its even a running mainstream joke.

That doesn't make it an absolute truth.

And some men still want to do it..

Yeah, we do. Because you know what? It works for a lot of people.

[–]SRSLovesGawker 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't necessarily agree with SS here (I have seen both apparently happy and obviously unhappy marriages in progress, so it's not quite as stark as all that), but only one of these states is actually a stereotype so solid and enduring that it's literally been a staple of film and TV reference since shortly after their invention. It's a state so ancient that we know imperial Rome imposed bachelor taxes because too many men were shunning marriage (or more precisely, shunning creating children, which has traditionally been the main reason for marriage).

If marriage works for you, that's great. Congratulations. Even if that's the case, recognition must be made that marriage has been (and still remains) a widely undesirable state that many men have had to be socially coerced into joining.

Edit: Minor grammar cleanup for clarity.

[–]CrazyInAnInsaneWorld 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

It works for a lot of people.

Exceptions to the rule. For every marriage that works, there are at least 2 that don't. (First marriages have a divorce rate of 40-50%, and second marriages have a divorce rate of 60%...and it only gets worse from there) That means the majority of marriages are ones that end in divorce. And when they don't work out, which can be for as petty a reason as she's no longer interested in you (a quality, you'll note, that you have zero control over, as you cannot control a person's preferences), she will be empowered by the courts to take the majority of your assets, and gods forbid should you have any children when she decides to swing to a better branch.

If two cylinders on a 6-shooter revolver are loaded, are you going to pick up the gun to play Russian Roulette? Same odds, different scenario. One just takes away your medical life while the other takes away your financial life. You can enjoy a domestic family situation without ever bringing the government into things, just by cohabiting in an area where commonlaw marriage is disregarded by the courts. You can even enjoy the religious ceremony, assuming you don't bring the legal contract into things, and in the end, you'll still have more rights (assuming you keep finances seperate), if she chooses to go her own way, than you would if you were to bring the government into a contract that they will only enforce one side of.

I'm not going to tell you not to get married, or even to start a family...I'll just tell you to do so in a way that best suits your interests, as a man. As a man, the family courts are stacked against you. Why play against a House where the odds are stacked against you? Instead of playing poker with the House, where you're more likely than not to lose, play poker with your friends, where the stakes are much lower, and you can have the same amount of fun and gratification.

Full disclosure: I am currently cohabiting with a LTR in a state that does not honor commonlaw marriages. Works for me, and I don't have to worry about getting fleeced, should she grow tired of being with me, or find some other guy who strikes her fancy. Been together for 8 years, and it's worked fine so far. No government contract required for that happiness, btw.

[–]jidery -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

40% isn't a majority.

[–]matthew_lane 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

No, but First marriages having a divorce rate of 40-50%, and second marriages having a divorce rate of 60% is a majority.

[–]damac_phone 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

No, it's not. %60 of second marriages end in divorce. %60 of the %50 that already had a marriage fail.

And if you're having multiple marriages fail, than maybe the problem lies with the people and not the institution

[–]matthew_lane 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

No, it's not.

Yes it is.

%60 of second marriages end in divorce. %60 of the %50 that already had a marriage fail.

Yes & since 51% is a majority, how is it that you think that 60% of 50% equals 0%? Because if it's any higher that 0% that would make it a majority.

[–]lumberjackadam 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

His point is that all of the people in the 60%have already had a divorce.

In my view, one in chance, two is suspect, and three means it's you, not them.

[–]jidery -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

There is no way 40% of marriages is a majority, you need >50% to have a majority.

60% of that 40% demographic is only 24% of the total amount of people that marry...

So there is a 50-60% chance that my first marriage will work just fine. Which is the actual majority here.

If you're doing 3+ marriages there is a good chance it's your own fault.

Once again a majority is >50%, which none of the statistics ever reach.

Does someone need to go back to highschool?

[–]CrazyInAnInsaneWorld 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're assuming the best-case scenario (since when is any scenario in existence the absolute best-case possible, in reality?) and that none of those initial divorcees ever remarry, and taking that as the whole, because it suits your narrative. If you don't see how that's an intellectually-dishonest interpretation of the statistics I provided, then there's no use trying to talk reason to you.

I've said my piece, already. Take the advice, or don't. But when the majority of divorces are initiated by women, when the law allows them to divorce you for as petty a reason as she found some other guy she has the hots for and now wants to abandon her family (Except the kids, because those mean the guy will have to pay her even more) to go hop back on the Single-life Carousel and take most of your assets with her to subsidize this choice to reneg on her commitments, when the courts are rigged against you getting even a fair deal in the divorce, playing those odds is not just foolish, it's suicidal.

The stats (as evidenced by the study linked here, specifically the part that shows lower happiness ratings for women in married relationships) show that both of you will be happier, in the long term, if you stick with a LTR-style cohabitation setup in a state that disavows commonlaw marriage. But don't take my word for it. Feel free to pick that revolver up and pull the trigger. It may go off, it may not. But why risk becoming just another statistic, in the first place?

Your choice, my friend. Your finances at risk, if it happens to take a nosedive, through no fault of your own, at odds in, best case scenario, just under being just as likely as not to happen.

[–]BitStompr -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe he's using the metric system.

[–]chamaelleon 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If not commonly known, it's at least commonly portrayed, and that has the effect of ingraining it in people's minds, especially young people. And plenty of young people don't have a stable counter-example at home to prove that conditioning wrong.

[–]SCROTAL-SACK 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

[–]Fanny__bandit 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

it's served society well for hundreds of thousands of years

So did the horse and buggy. Times have changed.

There's nothing wrong with the concept of marriage

How about today? What is marriage today? Should the MRM be defending marriage today? Its disgusting to see people supposedly for men's rights promoting a highly dangerous thing like marriage for men. Married men aren't bad. They should not be ostracized and we should have their backs. I support people's rights to marry just like I support their right to smoke crack. Its your life, but don't go around telling people its safe, especially the young impressionable men who might stumble upon this bullshit or the false hope of prenups or something. That is VERY dangerous. Marriage is where it started, thats what leads to divorce, thats what leads to alienation from children, thats what leads to suicide.

Frankly you could solve most of our western worlds problems with marriage from the get go, simply by making every marriage license/contract include a legally binding exit/breach of contract clause that did not include default alimony.

And until that is a reality, do NOT DEFEND MARRIAGE.

[+][deleted] 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[permanently deleted]

[–]Fanny__bandit 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

IS an entirely immaterial question. It's like asking "Should the MRM be defending chocolate ice-cream.

marriage as it exists today is a BAD IDEA FOR MEN. Anyone wanting to be helpful to men (men's rights movement?) should be advising men on what is good for them.

Nothing bad intrinsically? Who gives a fuck? Its bad NOW. So don't defend marriage NOW. Some vague time in the future where the (in many cases already gender neutral) laws are changed that may never happen at least in anyone's lifetime might is fine but men need to know the realities of the situation NOW.

Because of that is exactly why we SHOULD defend marriage. Because you'll never reform a thing you think is not worth defending.

It kills men. Fuck marriage. Women rejected it too and I don't blame them.

[–]jidery -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Except you basically just said "I know no one who is happy with their marriage, so no one must be"

Find someone who is fine with starting a family with you without any legal bindings.

[–]jidery 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Unfortunately not even that guatentees anything.

[–]FFXIV_Machinist 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

specially since in most states if you arent married you have no rights to your child.

[–]chavelah 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Statistically, women are willing to have children out of wedlock are NOT the women you want to coparent with. Exceptions exist, of course.

[–]matthew_lane 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Exceptions exist, of course.

But not nearly as many as people would like to pretend.

[–]chavelah 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think that varies widely based on the nation you live in. I wouldn't encourage a French or Danish or Icelandic man to get married before having a baby if he didn't want to and his girlfriend didn't want to. If he was born and raised in Alabama and so was she? If she's not reserving her reproductive capacity for her husband, RUN.

[–]mochacola 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I didn't say women who are willing to pump out kids without giving much thought. I said, 'starting a family', and lifelong would be implied. No different than apes starting lifelong families without any legal bindings. Their success rate seem pretty fine, far better than us married humans.

[–]mwobuddy 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

cohabit long enough and they become common law wife, entitled to the same stuff as legally married wives.

[–]pigeon56 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Marry a woman from another country like me. My wife is hot, 10 years younger than me and would have a very difficult claim to our assets as she is not American, and is not fully protected by and does not really get our law system. She is also not brainwashed by left wing feminism and American female entitlement. I have two gorgeous kids and a happy situation because of this choice.

This is one reason I support polygamy. I think if men and women were each free to marry other partners, they could get different needs met by different spouses. And the risk to any individual would be reduced because there would be other strong formal family bonds already in place to help that person withstand it. In such a case, you might expect alimony to be reduced.

[–]WaitingToBeBanned 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Reality does not work that way. Men still get screwed, just in slightly different ways.

[–]LilyBentley 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Person in poly relationship here. Sometimes it doesn't work how you want it to. You still need lots of open talk about everything and then some more and I assume this expands to marriage as well. (Never been married though.)

Uh jeez. Don't be so negative, there's a reason we've been doing it LLLOOONNNGGG before woman took advantage of divorce, before divorce even existed. The majority of woman out there don't discriminate the way we see on here. My wife for example (Almost 6 years in) is a fucking saint. She tells me all the time how great a dad I am. When I talk to her about the stuff I see on here like the pay gap myth she disagrees, listens, thinks then agrees. She's a person and a fucking brilliant one at that. My wedding day was one of, if not THE, best day of my life, genuinely absolutely awesome. My grandparents were (granma is now dead RIP) were the shining light of marriage. They still held hands walking down the street at 70 and I can only hope to be as happy as they were when I'm that old.

Now I have told this to my wife before that I don't need to get married. Growing up I didn't want to get married. Being married hasn't changed my life much. I love her just as much as I did before the marriage, now I just have some tremendous memories. But because I loved her so much I wanted to give her her special day. A day that she wore a big amazing white dress, where everybody she and I knew came to have fun and enjoy themselves. Where people make efforts to all look great, get drunk and have fun. Hell even my wedding aside my gran (who had mild alzeimers at the time and was getting fairly week) was dancing until; midnight and my grandad actually played the drums during the bands break with a friend who sang some acoustic stuff (he played in a jazz band 40+ years ago). People spend the day congratulating you and complementing you. I danced with friends, talked with old friend, met people my wife had talked about and it genuinely was the most awesome day. But it made her so fucking happy it made me happy. Getting married was so fucking awesome.

My life 6 years later. I love her, if she wasn't in my life I don'#t know what I would do. About two weeks ago we woke up and we were holding hands. Also the lack of sex in marriage is a hollywood myth. I can report some time later once kids are around if you wish. Though I suspect it might be right.

All in all marriage is great. The wedding was WAY more than worth it. I might get divorced later in life but if I can take a chance at being as happy as my grandparents it fucking is worth the risk.

If your marriage is shit you married the wrong woman (or man) and that is partially on YOU!

The writer of the Mother Jones article should be ashamed of himself. The article he cites is worth reading:

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/magazine/marchaprilmay_2016/ten_miles_square/why_is_marriage_thriving_among059894.php?page=all

Here is a quote,

"The simplest explanation for why elites continue to marry at the same rates as they did in 1950, and why they have such high expectations for their children (if that is indeed a factor), is that the 1950s did not, in fact, ever end for them economically. It’s perhaps no coincidence that the only group for whom marriage rates have not declined is the one group for whom incomes have been rising."

[–]questionnmark 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Well the causative element might not actually be the marriage itself. A stable marriage could be a result of genetic traits that are expressed in part by the stability of their marriage. The ability to negotiate, the ability to think of long term consequences rather than about what they are feeling 'right now' for instance are traits that may also be better at wealth accumulation, successful child rearing etc.

We could be seeing the accumulation of traits amongst certain classes. The ability for instance to delay gratification is a major indicator of future economic success, but the inability to delay gratification could be a major predictor of reproductive success.

[–]JerryShrimpsticks 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Everything you're talking about is probably the result of life experience, not genetics. Not every personality trait is dictated by your gene pool.

[–]questionnmark 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Genes are significantly under-rated by most people however as for dictating behaviour. Twin studies prove a large link between behaviour and genetics.

[–]JerryShrimpsticks 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I assume you mean "suggest," not "prove." Sorry, it's just that the traits you are talking about are not simply behaviors, but more like skills adopted and strengthened over time. Do you have a link to the twin studies you refer to?

[–]questionnmark 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The minnesota twin study is a very good one. It enrolled 1400 twins that were separated at birth and compared them.

Jim Lewis and Jim Springer were identical twins raised apart from the age of 4 weeks. When the twins were finally reunited at the age of 39 in 1979, they discovered they both suffered from tension headaches, were prone to nail biting, smoked Salem cigarettes, drove the same type of car and even vacationed at the same beach in Florida.

http://www.livescience.com/47288-twin-study-importance-of-genetics.html

We were surprised by certain behaviors that showed a genetic influence, such as religiosity [and] social attitudes," said Nancy Segal, an evolutionary psychologist at California State University, Fullerton, who was part of the study for nine years. "Those surprised us, because we thought those certainly must come from the family [environment]," Segal told Live Science. Segal described the groundbreaking research on Aug. 7 here at a meeting of the American Psychological Association.

Another study, commissioned by the editor of the journal Science, looked at genetics and IQ. The Minnesota researchers found that about 70 percent of IQ variation across the twin population was due to genetic differences among people, and 30 percent was due to environmental differences. The finding received both praise and criticism, but an updated study in 2009 containing new sets of twins found a similar correlation between genetics and IQ.

Sure it isn't 100%. However it also isn't 0% either. The twin studies are a 'proof' that genetics is important for personality.

On multiple measures of personality and temperament, occupational and leisure-time interests, and social attitudes, monozygotic twins reared apart are about as similar as are monozygotic twins reared together. These findings extend and support those from numerous other twin, family, and adoption studies.

I'm lucky to be in a field where workers have the upper hand. I can understand, though, how corporations think they have so much power over you. They think they can literally ruin your entire life unless you do exactly what they say.

This is why it's so sad to see a liberal publication being taken over by feminists. Mother Jones was a labor activist who organized miners to fight for worker's rights and she compelled their wives and daughters to join in the struggle. This is the complete opposite of what this feminist author stands for. They should rename the magazine The White Feather.

[–]bertreapot 12 points13 points14 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They'll opt back in when men start to pull their own weight. There's no telling when that's going to start happening.

Maybe men not "pulling their own weight" has more to do with the fact that it is increasingly difficult to make a decent wage without a college degree, whereas in the 1950s you could. Also, since the sexual revolution of the 1960s, neither men nor women have to wait till marriage to have sex, which means commitment can be postponed indefinitely. Also the fact that women are in the workplace now (which I don't think is a bad thing), meaning they're not forced to marry at 25 or else live life as a spinster.

Lastly, women greatly exceed men as college graduates, yet still expect to marry men more successful than them. That is just not how ratios work. You have more women fighting over less men, rather than making do with good enough.

[–]WhiteThrone 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It couldn't possibly be that marriage is on the decline because women are becoming evermore intolerable to be married to ...

[–]Mitthrawnuruodo1337 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nothing has changed much about that. It's still a bad deal for an awful lot of women, but cultural mores and economic imperatives have changed, and that means more women can afford to do what's right for themselves and stay unmarried these days.

That must be why all the complaints in the media come from men who can't find good wives, since the women are all happy with not marrying as it improves their lives. Oh, wait, no... it's mostly women who write all those articles. So his reasoning when applied to real world empirical data would conclude that marriage is actually on average more of a bum deal for... drum roll... the men.

[–]chortle-guffaw 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

  • Women have always wanted to marry "up" for financial security. These days, with more women getting degrees, non-degreed women can't compete landing a guy with a degree.
  • In 1960, if a women couldn't land a college guy or a skilled labor guy, she could at least get a guy with a well-paying factory job. They could raise a family on one income, had job security, and could look forward to a decent retirement pension. These days, unskilled worker guy is not such a great catch. He's two paychecks from living in his car and worried about getting laid off.
  • The stigma of being single is gone. People don't marry as much just to fit in.
  • Men are getting smarter about what a bad deal marriage (and divorce) can be for men. Well, not the young 20-somethings, they're still dumb as shit and think they know everything. But, they're staying single long enough to grow up and learn from the mistakes of others.
  • Even today the vast majority of marriage proposals are by men. If marriage is down, maybe it's because men are not asking.

Every article I read about this either blames men for not wanting to marry because they "aren't growing up" or say that women are so independent that they don't want to marry. Its like a huge elephant in the room. All my male friends know the risks of marriage. I can't understand why there are no or very very few articles examining divorce culture. Two alternative headlines to consider:

Marriage is declining because men are tired of being called pigs.

Men are becoming "pigs" because of how low marriage has fallen.

And a third:

If men are pigs, then only because we prefer the company of sows to that of modern women.

(Bet that gets called out as sexism.)

I think it's because the institution of marriage has become too expensive and too socially obligatory. The biggest part of why I never wanted to get married was because people seemed to be treating me like a failure for not being married, and I rebel against irrational social pressures like that. There have been other reasons as well, but that was probably the biggest counter-pressure for marriage to me. And from what I can gather from other men, it's similar for a lot of them too.

im not married because every woman ive dated falls into one of these

  1. Shamoo with Mad photoshop skills
  2. Psycopath hellbent on turning me into an accessory
  3. Ridiculously underdeveloped personality and mental fortitude.
  4. more insecure than Flash

the reason people arent marrying you ladies is because of those four things.

  1. If your a obese, loose some weigh. Rule of thumb: women shouldn't weigh over 150 unless they are exceedingly tall- over 5'7 - when i see a girl whos barely five feet tall but weighs almost as much as i do as a muscular 6'2 male, its pretty damn obvious as to why nobodys put a ring on it yet. there is no disease or ailment that makes you irreversibly fat, or incapable of being fit despite what facebook and buzzfeed tell you. caloric intake is a science- your body is not some magical thing that can break the laws of physics to just generate more mass without you putting that mass into your gullet. get on a treadmill and go forth at a vigorous pace (aka PROFUSE sweating- gasping for air vigorous), eat reasonable portions, put yourself into a caloric deficit while supplementing with vitamins. dont eat 6000 calories a day like your fucking usain bolt level of Olympic athlete - eat 1,200 - 1500 if you are sedentary, and 1500-1900 if you are active (i.e getting on the tredmil for 40 mins a day), and 2000-4000 if you are athlete status. you want to stuff your face all day? fine. work for it and you can have you cake and eat it too.
  2. If you cant understand that your boyfriend isnt a trophy to brag about to your lady friends, you need to move onto a more casual lifestyle, and just sleep with whoever fits your fancy. you are the female version of a PUA. go find a PUA and have fun- more power to you.
  3. if you can understand that codependency is bad, and why, you need to work on you. Learn some self reliance, learn some self discipline, learn how to fucking own your shit. no man wants a woman he has to wipe up after every day.
  4. if you are insecure, that's not the mans fault. its your own. fix what makes you insecure. if its your finances, fix your finances, if its your weight, fix your weight, if its your man- get the fuck over it- hes not a legitimate thing to be insecure over unless hes being promiscuous, and if he is - know for sure thats whats happening, dont just assume because he didnt call you for the eighth time this week, that hes cheating on you.

ive had ten relationships in the last fourteen years. and only one of them i blame myself for not working out. one girl was right for me, and i wasn't mentally developed enough to handle it and ran like a bitch, because i still hadnt worked out items 2-4 for myself.

[–]questionnmark 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

I too have to disagree with you on point 1.

Obesity is a recent phenomenon. It doesn't make sense to say that a bunch of people just up and went 'amoral' and became lazy slobs all of a sudden. Sure you can argue that one person ought to this or that, but when a group of people start getting fat then you look for the overall causes.

I would argue that stress, and ego-depletion are two of the biggest factors. See everyone has a limited amount of 'make yourself do stuff' juice. If you spend all day acting then you're far more likely to impulsively go for the chocolate cake than carrot stick. Hell its probably the reason why exercise is not linked to weight loss because it takes a heck of a lot of effort to put yourself through strenuous and unnecessary activity. With stress people tend to develop a sweet-tooth. And sugar of all 3 'bads' is the worst for gaining weight.

LolWHAT.

This is the most ridiculous shit I have read in a long time.

You know what is stressful, and depletes your magical fairy do stuff juice? Being a fatass.

But I guess if that makes you sad, you can go ahead and get another cake, and feel good about yourself for ten minutes while telling yourself that you just ran out of magical make-yourself-do-stuff juice.

Or you can make a logical, valuable decision to stop being a fatass, and to therefore have less stress in your life in the future, for the cost of a cake today.

It's that simple. Being fat is unhealthy, and a character flaw.

[–]mwobuddy 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

People with actual degrees have been studying 'willpower', and yes, it can be depleted.

if it was easy or limitless, everyone could do it all the time.

[–]Azothlike -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Nobody said it was easy.

The word used was simple.

It means basic. Not complicated. Easily understood. Composed of few noteworthy elements or variables.

Losing weight is simple. Consume less energy. Expend more energy. That is it. At most, we throw in one additional caveat, which is do this while meeting the nutritional requirements for healthy bodily function; but that part is about remaining healthy, not about losing weight.

If you are finding that simple task hard, it falls into the Character Flaw department which I specifically mentioned in my previous post. If you want to say "I am fat because I have weak character and cannot will myself to meet the simple objectives required to lose weight. Or because I don't want to lose weight and value food satisfaction over health", by all means. Be my guest.

But "I am fat because my microbiomes guys" is hilarious. Hilariously ignorant.

[–]mwobuddy 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Eating tasty, if fattening food, is not a character flaw. Trying to burn more calories so you can eat that food is difficult because it takes time, and that means a resource called willpower, which may have been depleted already by all f the day's earlier stresses.

I would argue that stress, and ego-depletion are two of the biggest factors.

by that logic, the people in africa, and other parts of the world would be in the same perdicament- so thats out.

And if you want to argue food scarcity as the factor for africa- Hello all of asia where food is abundant and the people are still skinny!

It doesn't make sense to say that a bunch of people just up and went 'amoral' and became lazy slobs all of a sudden.

when the issue is predominately apparent in a single population it points to any of these three factors:

  1. Culture - its become socially acceptable to be a glutton/slothly
  2. Ecosystem - The fattiest foods are the easiest to procure
  3. Design - Foods are intentionally designed to be fatty to lower the price point

Its a mixture of all three of these factors why we have an obesity epidemic in america:

  1. Ecosystem - our "bad foods" that are high in fat and carbs, are our Cheapest foods. you can buy a whole extra large pizza for the price of a salad with enough calories in it to substantiate a meal. a head of lettuce costs more than a box of microwavable 45% fat hamburgers.
  2. Culture - Our society has gone full blown Hugosphere where its everyone elses fault for your shortcomings, there fore its okay to be "HAES".
  3. Design - Drink makers add in LUDICROUS amounts of sugar per drink. Ground beef providers use fattier parts of the cow to get more per pound, a simple bag of chips has almost two hundred calories because of the gallon and a half of oil it was fried in.

They eat lots of sea food. Their ancestors are naturally thinner. They drink lots of tea (which has antioxidants, which promotes resistance to gene damage a la free radicals), and genes switch on and off, and are responsible for changes both short and long term. Meditation also plays a role in gene changes. 8 hours of extreme meditation will switch off genes responsible for stuff.

http://news.wisc.edu/study-reveals-gene-expression-changes-with-meditation/

The results show a down-regulation of genes that have been implicated in inflammation. The affected genes include the pro-inflammatory genes RIPK2 and COX2 as well as several histone deacetylase (HDAC) genes, which regulate the activity of other genes epigenetically by removing a type of chemical tag. What’s more, the extent to which some of those genes were downregulated was associated with faster cortisol recovery to a social stress test involving an impromptu speech and tasks requiring mental calculations performed in front of an audience and video camera. - See more at: http://news.wisc.edu/study-reveals-gene-expression-changes-with-meditation/#sthash.IoOsKqdv.dpuf

The med study is important for highlighting what happens to us when we are constantly bombarded by stress. Not that they don't have stressors, but the things they learn growing up as a culture may impact how they deal with it.

Besides, there's still fat asians. Just not very many.

You point 1. Is unscientific, there are a vairty of factors beyond excerise and consumption that effect ones weight, such as ones microbiome, or age, that can cause weight gain or loss or increased muscle vs. fat ratios. Its not that food magically disappears from their bodies or get added, its that the body handles the food in different ways.

Also Millions of people try deiting each year and IT DOESN'T WORK or Last for the majority of them, they can't keep to it because their body won't let them, their body resists the attempts, or some other reason.

I'll give you an example former prisoners of war we're dangerously thin, medical staff kept trying get their body weight up, but it wasn't working. One day somebody forgot to feed them. This triggered a physcological effect, I don't remember what, but after that they started to regain weight.

Look I'm not a Fat Denialist, being fat is a major health disaster, and its very unattractive outside of a nice pair of tits, but fat shaming is as useless as tits on a bull for solving it. The body is far more complex then you make it out to be.

Just stop talking.

You have zero fucking idea what you're talking about.

Losing weight is a simple physics equation. Convert mass to energy. Expend energy. Stop taking in so much mass.

Eat less and exercise. Period. Your body is not a physics anomaly. If you are failing to lose weight, you are not expending more energy than you are consuming. Use more energy and consume less.

It is that simple. Period.

If you're having a problem accomplishing something that is that simple, it's because you have one or more mental character flaws that are preventing you from getting off your fat ass and enacting the extremely simple solution. Not because of your magically diet-immune body "microbiomes" lol holy shit.

Found the fattie. Dieting aka eating sane to fatties isn't a thing you do sometimes, it's a way of life. Go watch a season of survivor and watch the fat melt off every contestant.

[–]FFXIV_Machinist 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago* (13 children) | Copy Link

no my point is not unscientific at all. its basic math. your body cant just spontaneously generate mass. people fail at diets because they fail at self discipline, or completely underestimate just how many calories are in that burger with two patties four slices of mostly fat chese, and eight strips of bacon.

i will LITTERALLY BUY (as in purchase them as a person) anyone who has a strict 1500 calories a day intake, at least 20 minutes of rigorous exercise, and still gains weight because i can find a way to turn them into an energy source that has the ability to spontaneously generate more matter than it takes in and puts out and turn them into a fat fueled spaceship.

This triggered a physcological effect, I don't remember what, but after that they started to regain weight.

Thats another one of those buzzfeed/facebook tales. you know what keeps you from gaining weight and happens after massive bouts of starvation? Scurvy. you know what they were fed to get their weight up? meat and bread. Guess what isnt a cure for scurvy? meat and bread. without vitamin C your body cant create new cells - specifically connective and fatty tissues. so yea. having scurvy, you could eat all the meat bread and potatoes you wanted- you arent going to gain weight because your body doesn't have the components in the quantities it needs to keep making more of you.

Look I'm not a Fat Denialist, being fat is a major health disaster, and its very unattractive outside of a nice pair of tits, but fat shaming is as useless as tits on a bull for solving it. The body is far more complex then you make it out to be.

no you really are if you believe anything you wrote up there to be true. there is no disease that makes you break the laws of physics. your body cant make more of you if you dont give it the things it needs to make more of you. P E R I O D. we would keep growing while we were dead if that was the case. starving kids in africa wouldnt look like skeletons if that were the case.

Dieting through calorie counting and relatively small amounts (litterally 1% of your day) of exercise works- whether or not a person has the self discipline to do both of these things, and hold themselves to it, are the only thing that matters. "oh its my cheat day" eats six thousand calories and then wonders why they arent loosing weight.

[–]Targren -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

or completely underestimate just how many calories are in that burger with two patties four slices of mostly fat chese, and eight strips of bacon.

And because literally everything from the calorie count on the package to the "scientific" calculation of BMR can range from "a near guess" to "horribly inaccurate."

There are enough individual and unmeasurable variables in play in any given meal so that "calorie counting" is essentially non-deterministic, and you can't do "basic math" if you don't have the numbers to do the math on.

[–]FFXIV_Machinist 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

hahahahaah oh god thats adorable... holy jeez... do you not know how a calorie is gauged? please keep telling yourself that. ill be over here with everyone else who knows whats up and i'll keep being the guy who lost fifty pounds by doing just what i described above.

eat proper portions. caloric valuie is a proper gauge of your portioning. put yourself in a caloric deficit, and dont break it. work out at a vigorous rate for 1% of your day- 20 minutes, and you will drop weight. P E R I O D.

[–]Targren -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

hahahahaah oh god thats adorable... holy jeez... do you not know how a calorie is gauged?

Yes, I do. Do you know where the Base Metabolic Rate calculation comes from? Aggregated estimates. It's not a static value, and there's not a person out there that comes with a gauge on their ass with a needle pointing out how many calories they're burning at a given time.

put yourself in a caloric deficit

And here's where you show that you have either a reading or attention disorder, since my entire point was that it isn't so straightforward as that when the numbers used to determine what is a "deficit" and that people like you seem to take as gospel are usually wrong.

Anecdotally, I had to work out through trial and error that my actual BMR was about 2/3 of what that function would tell me, and in order to see any meaningful weight loss, I had to take another 25% off of that. A 50% deficit is more than ANY reputable professional recommends, but because of how efficient my personal metabolism is, it's where I found my sweet spot.

You can do all the bullshit fat-bashing virtue signalling you want, but the simple fact of the matter is that it's not as cut and dried as you make it out to be, and jerkoff attitudes like yours do more to discourage people than drive them, because they don't know any better than you and when they use the same numbers and don't get any results, they give up.

[–]FFXIV_Machinist 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago* (9 children) | Copy Link

do you know HOW we know just how much a human body burns on average? i'll give you a hint- its through a natural reaction that maintains your body temperature. we know exactly how much a person burns because of their body temperature. its what governs our magical ability to keep that uniform 98.7 temperature across the entirety of our species. Do you know WHY we store fat? its because we intake MORE than our body needs to maintain that level- Ergo if you know a persons target body weight, the effect of 1 kcl on said body, you can calculate exactly how many calories are needed to maintain that reaction, to maintain that tempature. the only difference in burn rates for people will be INSANELY SMALL- within 10-100 calories of that magical 2000 calorie marker. smaller people (like a 5 ft or shorter male), obviously need less, while 6ft and taller obviously need more.

because they don't know any better than you and when they use the same numbers and don't get any results, they give up.

Simple- if its not working, you either arent sticking to your plan, or you just need to decrease your food intake, and increase your exercise rate.

and my "jerk off attitude" isnt a jerk off attitude- its me not being a part of the problem. we allow people to exist in these hugospheres where everythings ok and its not their fault, and thats why the extremely vast majority of americans are not driven, or fail their weight loss attempts. speaking to the contrary doesnt constitute me being a jerk. if i was bbeing a jerk id simply ridicule them and tell them theyll never loose weight.

oh and i seriously doubt that your metabolisim is so epic that a 1500 cal diet with exerscise was enough to keep you from becoming a withered husk, and moresoever wasnt letting you loose weight (theres a reason athletes HAVE to eat 3000+ Calories a day). i dont think its even possible to keep up bodily function for long at 1000 calories a day unless you are taking in some extremely nutrient rich calories or taking vitamin supplments. your body would break down on that little.

[–]Targren -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

he only difference in burn rates for people will be INSANELY SMALL- within 10-100 calories of that magical 2000 calorie marker

And yet here I am, a living, breathing disproof by contradiction. Just by the simple fact that you use the "magical 2000 calorie marker" as a baseline shows you don't know as much about what you're talking about as you think - that number came from FDA surveys and then chopped a percentage off the top (about 20%, IIRC).

Simple- if its not working, you either arent sticking to your plan, or you just need to decrease your food intake, and increase your exercise rate.

That's the same circular logic from people who say bullshit like "If Agile doesn't work for you, you're not doing Agile right." You say it's a simple matter of numbers, except when it isn't.

and my "jerk off attitude" isnt a jerk off attitude- its me not being a part of the problem. we allow people to exist in these hugospheres where everythings ok and its not their fault,

No, it's you jerking off - verbally masturbating to the idea that you're better than them and they're such a huge problem and look who contemptible they are and validate me... it's just as tiresome as the tumblrinas doing the same thing.

No one here said anything about fault. I said the fat-hate party line that you're repeating here is uselessly oversimplified to the point of being a bumper sticker, and the only reason to keep spreading that sort of misinformation is to keep propping up the same smug superiority that makes "anti-smoking" groups advocate banning vaporizers in spite of the quit success rate.

[–]FFXIV_Machinist 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

yea you dont recall correctly. other countries performed the same tests and came to the same results. the exception being the UK gaging at 1800 for an average adult male, but thats understandable given their average national height is lower than america.

No, it's you jerking off - verbally masturbating to the idea that you're better than them and they're such a huge problem and look who contemptible they are and validate me... it's just as tiresome as the tumblrinas doing the same thing.

no it was me providing a reason for why "theres no good men out there anymore". go back and read my post. it was when people like you leapt into the HAES esque defensive posture that i came back at you with anything even closely resembling that.

spreading that sort of misinformation is to keep propping up the same smug superiority that makes "anti-smoking" groups advocate banning vaporizers in spite of the quit success rate.

funny.... since smoking rates fell WAY before vaporizers hit mainstream. Shaming people into quitting through viral shame campaign ads was TOTALLY ineffective there right? not like we saw a country wide adult smoker rate drop by 50%, and the new smoker rate drop by 80%+ right? naw dawg shame campaigns dont work.

im not shaming anyone here. im stating fact- its not my problem if facts offend you.

[–]Targren 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Yes. 2000/1800 is an average. That's my point that you're missing. It's not a magic number. There are several formulas for calculating BMR, with flaws is that they don accurately take into account personal metabolism, just more "averages" based on "activity level", or the metabolic difference between lean body mass and body fat, or other various shortcomings - quite simply, there's no way to accurately determine individual caloric needs, and "averages" aren't useful for the obese you were going after, because if they were close to the average, they wouldn't be in the set you were addressing.

it was when people like you leapt into the HAES esque defensive posture

I wasn't defending anything or anyone. I called out your BS oversimplification.

There are calculators on the internet that works out how many cals you need. Put in that you do zero exersise per day ( that's what I do ) and it will figure it out

I am 42. And in the best shape of my life. Why. CICO. I meal prep for work every 2 weeks. It costs £2.46 a day. That's including supliments for the gym. I normally have half a pizza at night. So it cheap , don't have time ? I commute 4.5 hours a day for work My cals per day range from 1470-1800

[–]Targren2 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Put in that you do zero exersise per day ( that's what I do ) and it will figure it out

And it most likely will get it wrong.

[–]theDodgerUk1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Yeah. It will be roughly right though

[–]Targren1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Not if it uses the Harris-Benedict Equation that most of them do. That's been supplanted for years.

Between that and individual variance, which can be sizable:

One study of 150 adults representative of the population in Scotland reported basal metabolic rates from as low as 1027 kcal per day (4301 kJ/day) to as high as 2499 kcal/day (10455 kJ/day); with a mean BMR of 1500 kcal/day (6279 kJ/day). Statistically, the researchers calculated that 62.3% of this variation was explained by differences in fat free mass. Other factors explaining the variation included fat mass(6.7%), age (1.7%), and experimental error including within-subject difference (2%). The rest of the variation (26.7%) was unexplained. This remaining difference was not explained by sex nor by differing tissue size of highly energetic organs such as the brain.

So it could be anywhere from "roughly right" to "lols not even close"

[–]marauderp0 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

2000/1800 is an average. That's my point that you're missing. It's not a magic number.

Um, no shit?

So if you're trying a restricted calorie diet and still gaining weight ... maybe restrict your caloric intake just a bit more?

It's still a numbers game regardless of whether you know the exact numbers or not.

So this guy has daughters, cancer(that he wants to commit suicide over if he can't make it, although he's on many legal drugs), and he's a die hard liberal. Yeah, that all makes sense. And this is an article he wants to publish at this time of his life. Can I go help him with his suicide? What a piece of shit and loser. Way to further push the sexes towards a fight, and then politically you call others racist. You're not any better Mr. Drum. How can I contact him without coming across as a complete dick?

[–]SKNK_Monk -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Attacking the author, rather than the content of the article, isn't really helping anything.

[–]NUMBERS2357 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I normally like Kevin Drum - he even quoted me once in an article of his. But I don't get how people think "men are pigs" is some brave attack on gender roles - if anything, it's an embodiment of them.

It's also an embodiment of the conservative politics he hates: blaming poor people for their supposed moral failings rather than their surroundings fostering that behavior, resorting to gendered stereotypes to explain things, acting like stagnating income is men "screwing up and getting fired', elitism (college educated men not being abusive), etc.

This wouldn't be the first time supposedly liberal feminist ally with conservatives, or promote gender stereotypes, when it seems to help women.

Also, is there any evidence it's women pulling back? Seems just as likely it's men who don't want to get married as much anymore.

[–]CherriPi 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well to be honest, I was hoping this article would turn out to be satire. Turns out this guy believes he and women are above other men.

[–]PerniciousOne 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Gotta jump on the bandwagon saying all men are evil and should not be desired or wanted, except the writer he is a good guy, a valiant white knight willing to help out with housework and the children.

Ignores why many men do not want to get married anymore. Now that women do not need to stay married to you for long to get all the benefits of being married men are not willing to do it anymore.

[–]wanderer779 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

kind of funny to watch self described progressives blame the problems of the poor on the poor. When other groups such as blacks, women, etc. have a problem we look for systemic causes. But if there is a problem with men, (them not being useful to women), it is their fault. No investigation into the changes in the economy, education system, family court, etc. Just "men are pigs".

I have to wonder, why does it matter to progressives? Women are leaving poor men alone and living the fabulous independent lives they wanted all along. Why is this a problem? Why do they feeel a need to write articles trashing these guys? These guys aren't oppressing these gals anymore, so the feminists should be celebrating.
