I knew someone like this (nonromantic). And while they lie pathologically, they do also tell truths that are inverted. What I mean is that when they are talking about dramatic harms involving an aggressor and a victim, they are always victims in the stories. The reality: the events happened, but they are actually AGGRESSORS producing victims!

The person I knew was abusive, but when his victims fled, he insisted he was abused. So when these people talk about aggressor-victim events and they sound like victims, keep this in mind!!!!

I had a friend who was a major pick me who dated a sociopath. He ditched her on a Valentine’s weekend getaway with other couples because his “cousin died.” When she asked him to send the obituary so she could get a refund on the trip that she paid for, he got mad at her and accused her of calling him a liar. He never sent the obituary.

He also stood her up on their wedding day (you can’t even make this ish up) which was a destination wedding. Only half of his family showed up which means that they got the heads up that he was not going through with it. She finally broke free of him, but aged 10 years from that relationship.

Once you catch a man in any elaborate lie, run for the hills. It will only escalate.

I had an ex narc boyfriend convince a few of his friends to call me and tell me a lie that he had gotten into a terrible car wreck and he was at the hospital and he might die.

I had a feeling it was bullshit since his friends were known pranksters so I just said “okay” and hung up.

He called me back instantly and RAGED that I “didn’t even care” that he might be dead or dying. He tried to make it like I was the bad person in this scenario and he kept telling me what a cold-hearted and awful, uncaring person I was. He never once acknowledged that putting someone in a situation like that might be cruel or at least incredibly manipulative. He never owned what he’d done- it was all mean old me. 🙄

I think the fiancé in this story was doing something similar: setting her up to be the horrible person in the relationship who so coldly wanted to take him off life support.

He’ll tell his friends and next victim that it really happened as part of a smear campaign. And he’ll the add the additional lie that he miraculously pulled through in the end, no thanks to her.

If they stay together, he’ll throw it in her face repeatedly that she’s a monster who told the doctors to take him off life support even though he was expected to live.

They are nothing if not predictable.

I had an ex like that. The worst thing it takes really long time to figure out a guy is lying. To every normal person this type of things they lie about are ridiculous. Why even lie about some everyday stuff ? Usually they don't even gain anything from lying because it's some past stuff that doesn't even matter. I'm pretty sure there is a name of a mental illness for this type of behaviour.

I guess the only thing you can do is ask about pictures if he tells you a story about some amazing time somewhere, ask his friends to repeat some story they were included in when he was telling you about. When he told you some story try to ask him about it after some time but change some detail (like he told you he was somewhere in 2018 change it to 2017, he told you he had blue honda, ask about his black toyota).

I see it all the time on shows. He’s a Doctor from Harvard. Only 6 years into the relationship the lies start unraveling and he’d rather kill her than let her find out he’s already married, never went to college or any other school save that of Hard Knocks, and is 10 yrs older than he claimed.

Men who lie on that level are a huge red flag. And the misdemeanor of a white lie says something about their lack of ethics and morals that becomes so much more. For someone who’s a raging liar it’s not a far step to other morally whack things- cheating, assault etc

This sounds awful but unfortunately it sounds like she did literally zero to no vetting before marrying this "man". He was able to pull these massive lies off because she ignored red flags and signals. This isn't a HVM. How is this person able to leave and disappear and hide out away from his job, home, and responsibilities? He couldn't if he had responsible life. I'm sorry but this is what happens when you deal with LVM, drifters and those without tangible assets and stability. If anything she needs to take this as a lesson to level up, vet thoroughly and be financially independent so he can't "leave" her anywhere. She should have enough money to hop a flight from anywhere she travels independent of her husband or traveling partner. She needs a divorce attorney and a restraining order. SMH

I met a man who made up an entire documentary about himself that I later found from his lifelong friends that was false. I'll never forget when he destroyed his entire room, took pictures of it and said his wife did it. She wasn't even close to the vicinity. She left him and moved out of state. She also killed his fish when she wasn't there and also knocked his kid down the steps when she wasn't there. He was a textbook narcissist and I'm not just using that term. I know what it means.

I honestly wonder what (if any) proof she has that he is diabetic. In my experience the first lies these people tell are the hardest for us to shake - because they start at the very beginning, before things get bad. My ex (who admitted that he was a sociopath) supposedly had a undiagnosable stomach condition that would flare up whenever he was bored or whenever he sensed I was picking up on his lies. Turns out, he was also using that excuse to get pain meds however he could, and to distract me from his lies, and to distract me from noticing that he was also using heroin at the time.

In this case, even if the diabetes was legitimate, you can absolutely bet your ass the diabetes was used in ALL types of ways - to increase the drama of their struggle love; to gain sympathy out of boredom so they can emotionally bank on it later; and to distract from his bullshit whenever she was getting onto the right track with figuring out his lies. Everyone else is right, this is sociopathic territory.

My friend was with a guy since she was really young. They married and had a couple kids. He supposedly went on a trip to see a football game. He actually never left town and was in a hotel with someone, he took pictures of the tv screen showing the game, sent them to my friend and said his seats were great and he was having a great time. Men are grade A liars! But, they almost always get caught because we aren't stupid. My friend didn't know at first but her intuition was trying to tell her something. The proof ended up almost literally falling into her hands. Gotta love women's intuition.

He made up elaborate stories for somewhat insignificant stuff. Like, instead of telling that he's late because his bus was late, he talked about the bank robbery and how he was interviewed and I'll see it in the evening news etc. Obviously there wasn't any bank robberies in our city for the last couple of decades.
