The Civil Rights Act was over 50 years ago, what makes them think this would ever hold up in court?
[–]SchrodingersRapist 283 points284 points285 points 8 years ago* (28 children) | Copy Link
what makes them think this would ever hold up in court
Because it's worked so far to deny "X only clubs" as long as they are male, or non-minority? The fact that they keep a team of lawyers on retainer and most student's don't? Unless the ACLU or some other rights group takes it up it requires personal money to fight. They have much more money to pay out than the average student by considerable amounts.
[–]MaxStout808 189 points190 points191 points 8 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link
You remember these are Harvard Students, right. And all of these boys' dads were probably in the same fragernity, skull and bones, whatever-the-fuck, and want their sons to do it, too? I mean, with these kids parents alone, they probably have an amazing legal team alone.
Or a bribe. Probably a bribe is easier. cough sorry...donation.
But yeah, why do these people not realize equality is in the rearview mirror for this shit? Women: you have more than enough clubs. Move on to something more important. Like signing up for the draft.
[–]nbo11 225 points226 points227 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points19 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
A bribe wouldn't work. Harvard could afford to give all of their students free tuition essentially forever. This is not hyberbole - some time ago I ran the numbers based on their published financials, and their endowment earned enough money to cover all of their expenses.
Granted, this may not apply any more as this was probably 7 or 8 years ago now, but suffice to say, Harvard has a shit ton of money.
[–]MaxStout808 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
So you're saying they have a ton of money, and therefore don't need any more. Ergo, they are willing to let go of their centuries-old fraternal traditions, because, hey, if there's one thing we know about rich people it's this: once they're rich they stop caring about money.

You should never hold hands with a lobster.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
No, I just think it has less to do with centuries old fraternal traditions and more to with unironic sjws bitching until they get what they want. It's become such a problem there that it's not just straight white males being negatively impacted. A group of asian kids has been trying to sue harvard for over a year because they keep getting rejected in favor of more """"oppressed"""" minorities. Even the doj is getting involved.

[–]primo_pastafarian18 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link
True enough. ACLU will only handle minority cases these days.
You'd need a lawyer who's willing to work for a percentage of the settlement. Which honestly wouldn't be that tough to find, I think, though I honestly hate settlements, because they have to be fought on an individual basis and do not set a precedent. The percentage of individuals who would take it that far in the first place is already pretty low.

My gym has a women's only workout area but none for men.
Discrimination against men is the defacto order of the day.
[–]summonblood 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It’s because generally men don’t care if things are co-ed whereas women generally request non-co ed. Less a discrimination issue and more a demand issue. There aren’t any men campaigning for men’s only facilities/spaces.
[–]PanderjitSingh 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
If customer bigotry is a valid reason in this case it ought to be in all cases.
I agree with you, but what I mean is if there was demand for a men’s only space we would definitely get it. I just think most men don’t care enough to have it happen de facto. In the case of gyms, we tend to care more about the availability of equipment rather than seclusion from women. Business follows demand. Want change? Change consumer taste.
In terms of governmentally funded institutions, I whole heartedly agree with you.
[–]Quintrell 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
They probably think it'll hold up in court because the provision of the Civil Rights Act concerning discrimination on the basis of sex only applies to cases of employment discrimination.
Harvard is discriminating against its students not its employees.

The women's clubs are being given a grace period to rework their groups, and the stats surrounding frat houses are starkly different from those of sororities. Feel free to do your own research. They're shutting them down because the majority of frats are very rapey. Harvard are attempting to address the issue of rapey frats, not the social aspect of same-sex clubs. The females non-rapey clubs are being affected by measures taken against rapey male clubs, you guys are basically crying that girls (with their fembot femminazi lezostroppo vagenda, etc) aren't being treated equally. You're right, it is kinda unfair that they won't be able to have sororities anymore thanks to entitled dickweeds who don't have the brain-grapes to hook up with college girls without drugging them out of their minds.
You douches are like the dumb perp who steals something, runs from the cops, gets shot, and then tries to sue the cop for shooting you.

No, maybe YOU'RE "rapey", since you assume everyone else with a penis dreams of raping women without repercussion. Guess that's what YOU would do if you had the chance. Speak for yourself, dickweed.
[–]primo_pastafarian30 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link
I have no problem shutting down groups with a history of rape, as proven in a court of law.
I DO have a problem with shutting down groups simply because they are for men. What about the perfectly good men's groups that have zero allegations against them?
This blanket rule that specifically targets men, especially in actual wording, is sexual discrimination, there is no way to dispute that.
As for shooting a thief, you do realize that not everything has to end with getting shot, right? Are you saying that anyone who runs from the cops deserves to get shot? So now, running from the cops = automatic death sentence? Because that is really fucked up.
[–]eclectro 11 points12 points13 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Remember there is no rape culture. The thing about this is it's just a way for some feminist(s) to invalidate their opponent so they can gain control of them somehow. The scary part is it's actually pathological.
They are doing that here to satisfy their rage against males and shut down the groups, though "rape culture" is a lie.

In my country men have fewer constitutional rights than women. Should I really just accept that?
just ignore them. let them try and shut it all down. and then when they do, slap them into next year with a civil rights lawsuit. there's no exemption in the civil rights act or US constitution that says it's okay to discriminate against males.

The good news is that Fraternities are already set up to be secret societies. All they need to do is declare their roll of membership to be an official secret and stick to their secret signs for recognition. Recruiting gets harder, but it won't be too bad - there will be plenty of guys looking for a way to stick it to the school.
If it's run entirely off campus and without school knowledge, then it's nearly impossible for the school to control.

The Ancient and Honorable Order of Turtles ("International Association of Turtles", "Turtle Club", or similar title) started as an informal "drinking club" between World War II pilots, self-described as "an honorable drinking fraternity composed of ladies and gentlemen of the highest morals and good character, who are never vulgar."

A way around it would be for male fraternities to have gay acceptance weeks (becaue fraternities are allready pretty gay by nature), and if they get shut down, simply launch a multi million dollar lawsuit declaring the got shut down for their pro gay activism, and a title IX complaint on behalf of every registered gay male, speciffically naming the single sex female clubs and sororities as direct beneficiaries of the policy.

A "grace period" that is selectively given only to female gender clubs, is absurdly long, and can be extended an unlimited number of times is an exemption.
[–]DrowningInPussycats 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The grace period was initially proposed as 3 years, so...
[–]tallwheel 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
5 years is a long time, though. That's long enough for someone to start as first year and graduate before the grace period ends. Many kids' entire college life will be changed by this.
[–]supacrusha 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Fo five fucking years, and you and I both know theyll force an extension on that period.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's a misleading title. The article covers this
[–]bluefootedpig 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
And to emphasize, women-focused groups must admit men now. If they refuse, they too are penalized.
[–]klethra 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
By the way, that particular quote doesn't have a linked source even though the other major claims do. Now I'm not saying it's "fake news," but if that's not a lie, it's garbage journalism.
[–]v574v 30 points31 points32 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Women are permitted to feign childlike weakness in order to keep their clubs and although that presents them as weaker than the other members of peoplekind - we’ll all just agree to look the other way and hope our kids are listening to what we say and not what we do or else we’ll need to compensate for this imbalance by smearing men and by further expressing patronizing behaviour to women.
You go girl! Just not after dark, or alone, or with a bank loan, or as the CEO of a company, or as a leader - unless you prove you're not like those ‘other girls’.
[–]theDmc231 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
"Peoplekind"... are you one of those people, or did you get called out for being sexist calling mankind by its proper name?
[–]v574v 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I didn’t want to name names but we all know who those other people are, right?
[–]Warner420 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Hes referencing justin trudeaus video where he responds to a woman by correcting her to say peoplekind.
[–]-manatease 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
"Peoplekind", well I'm triggered. That's deeply offensive to those of us who identify as other species and/or inanimate objects. The correct term in <insert current year> is "entitykind"... jeez, get with the program!

This is not going to stop until big donors stop giving them money. The threat of funding streams drying up should shock them back into sanity. Take a look at what happened with Oriel College and all the Cecil Rhodes bullshit.
[–][deleted] 15 points16 points17 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
They have a billion dollar endowment. They literally don't need any money from donors ever again.
[–]Anaxagoras23 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
You're missing their biggest "donor", really. That social science money needs to be cut from the outset, and if they persist in sexist policies I don't see why all of it can't find a new home.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Harvard can operate off of it's endowment forever and never need a dime from the government, donors, or event students.
[–]Anaxagoras23 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Operate as a college, yes, but all the research projects and so on are going to hurt if they lose them. Hurt in the sense of pain, not an attempt to kill them. Beyond that all that social science money is probably how they got where they are right now, to begin with, so it would be doing them a favor most likely.
The last report I read on the topic (granted that was a decade ago) was that all the money they took in and spent could come directly from their endowment, and the endowment would still continue to grow in value, without any additional funds.
[–][deleted] 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
[permanently deleted]
Harvard literally has an endowment large enough to pay for all it's operating costs (including salaries, expenses, etc...) forever.

Isn't that super-secret and hard to get into? (And secretly running the world?)
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
It's relatively easy. Given that you're a man, free born, of good report (no felonies) and well recommended.
Yeah that running the world business gives me a great laugh, as those who make those charges don't know the first thing of Freemasonry, let alone, ever met one.
We take good men and make them better.

Are you still required to believe in god? No atheists allowed?
[–]snyderjw 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You need not believe in Jehovah, nor define what god means to you... let's put it that way. As an Alan Watts fan, my oaths were taken on the Bhagavad Gita. You could probably use the Principia Discordia in an open minded lodge. The mythology of the Bible is utilized, however, in ritual.
[–]postnick 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]supacrusha 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
What would "free born" mean, (just curious) is that like flashback terminology to the days of slavery or what?
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
Great question. It's in context to your family, meaning you were "born without the debts of your father". As Freemasonry was for centuries the only social "safety net", this was a time long before the Welfare State became accepted. So you can't enter a charity organization if you are bringing in large amounts of debt.
There is lots of great history on the matter, but Southern Lodges, generally were extremely racist. Thus led to colored men forming an off shoot, Price Hall Freemasonry. And today there are only 5 State Grand Lodges that do not recognize Price Hall (all 5 are in the South, go figure)
But the long and short of it is "no". However that didn't mean racists didn't use it for their own nefarious actions.
Thats pretty cool.
Wherever you live, there is probably a lodge (or multiple ones) in your town. You can walk down there tonight, pull the number of the Secretary or Worshipful Master off the door and give them a call.
[–]PhrikeNCX 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Why post a picture of an article and not link to the article itself? People that do this are usually trying to elicit reactions based only on the title, knowing that people are too lazy to go find and actually read it.
[–]Ted8367 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Good question. A couple of hours after the OP was posted, a properly linked post with an accurate title was made:
but far down in the number of votes.
Odd, that.
[–]klethra 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Because if you read the actual article, it chooses to deliberately misrepresent what actually happened.
Sororities are getting binned. The only groups remaining are women's issues advocacy groups. If someone created a men's issues group, Harvard would allow it under the same stipulations. OP just doesn't want people to read the article critically before they get outraged.

Honestly. It’s not going to be long before some angry nut job starts targeting and assassinating feminists. It’s a gender-biased world, in females favor!
[–]Luchadorgreen 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
God, let's hope not. Violence is never the answer. Also, feminists would never shut up about it and Vox, Jezbel, Buzzfeed, Vice, Mother Jones, Mary Sue, the Verge, etc. will run headlines about how some evil MRA, inspired by this subreddit or some shit, killed a heroic civil rights activist. Blue checkmarks on Twitter will screech even louder than normal about "toxic masculinity", "male fragility", "kill all men" , and shit like that.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Word. Remember Elliot Rodger? Ask any feminist and they'll tell you he was a redpiller / MRA. Except he wasn't redpill nor MRA. Nowhere in his internet history is it suggested that he even knew what these things were. But feminists perpetuate the lies they want to believe rather than have a rational viewpoint based on facts. Similarly, the thoroughly debunked 1-in-3/4/5 and 77 cent paygap myths persist. Sigh.
Lol. I’m not officially endorsing that idea to be clear. But for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. All I’m saying. It’s science n shit
