I'm not sure what the situation is in the US or Europe, but in the UK the one site that I used to use was closed down some time ago, because they can't compete with Tinder and app-based sites. I do think this represents a decline, as it was the one place where there is at least a chance you might encounter someone who could string a sentence together. On Tinder, the chances of this are approximate to passing a camel through the eye of a needle.

I don't think I will go out on a date again, but regardless of this even though dating was always a slog for me, I'm glad that I was involved with it at a time when there was still a vestige of people attempting to communicate meaningfully and treating one another with a semblance of humanity. That was the minority experience, but it was still part of the experience.

Online dating today is a pure meat market, and your hope of making a meaningful connection via Tinder is basically zero. From what I have seen, no-one even tries to communicate with you in a committed fashion, it's just tedious one-word answers, and the overall process is less enjoyable than squeezing blood from a stone.

I may be completely wrong, but that is my impression.

No and it probably never will. It's way too advantageous for women. Their whole sexual strategy is based around comparing and filtering as many men as possible with the greatest ease and OLD and social media gives them just that.

No. Women have access to sex with much more attractive men than they would be able to attract otherwise. Eventually, online dating will only be accessible to tall, handsome men and all women. Bumble is the first step toward this. Women see 80% of men as disposable cogs in a machine they expect to run with no support from themselves.

Pre covid dating sites were literally listed as a reason nightclubs were closing down at record rates.

During covid - fewer people dated in general. The few that did had no choice but to use dating sites since bars a d other venues were closed.

Post-Covid: Who knows? I hope nightlife takes off again and people are wanting to congregate when it’s actually safe (not pretend safe like it is now). But it could just be people are now so used to dating apps they become bigger.

As a guy, I’ve noticed a decline since COVID in both the number of matches I get and the willingness to meet up. Used to actually do pretty well on apps but it’s a lot tougher now.

No, online dating isn’t a silly thing. It’s resulted in many happy long term relationships and marriages. Just because it hasn’t directly benefited you doesn’t mean it’s silly.

Even if online dating disappears from the surface of the earth socially awkward men who don’t know how to talk to women STILL won’t get women. People blaming online dating as the source of problems in their dating life are doing it to avoid addressing the real problem. Which 9/10 times is an internal issue.

I doubt it. It's pretty easy to use your phone and find someone new instead of going out someplace to meet someone (limited selection) or relying upon a friend setting you up (not everyone has a lot of friends and not everyone knows a lot of single people who want to be set up). There is a lot of "misuse" of online dating, but these are outweighed in most people's minds by the ease of its use.

Now these are the topics I lurk on this sub for. I am old enough to have been dating when the OPs statement was true..that online dating was viewed as only for divorced or middle aged people and was generally looked down upon by anyone under 35. A single 20 something wouldn’t be caught dead on match.com because those that were, people made fun of them.

Things have changed and, unfortunately, online dating/apps are here to stay. It seems to serve ladies really well and the convenience means that they will keep using it. Even though men are disadvantaged in it, they will also stay to maintain some hope of meeting those women. It will likely expand and more apps will come.

My personal bit of unsolicited advice..All Guys should quit online dating apps on Jan 1 of 22. Spend the rest of this year improving, keep swiping and dating but I believe an average man fares much better in real life than as just a profile on an app. Things are tough now as we are in whatever stage of the pandemic we are depending on where you live. One thing that’s definitely true is that people got lonely during the last year or so. Things have to open up a bit more but with 2022 being my arbitrary line in the sand, I believe women will be very open to good male real live interactions as opposed to what we’ve all been through. I really think it’s an opportunity for any guy who’s not getting what he wants from online dating

Online dating will never die, it has simply expanded to social media. I’ve literally seen someone on TikTok live ask for the Instagram of a girl viewing for a date.

In person approach is so foreign now that it’s almost weird to see happen.

Now this isn’t necessarily a good thing, because online leaves room for simply those appealing to the eye. This is why men are so frustrated, but women aren’t... I can assure you they’re pretty smug about being able to filter through the best looking men.

And the good looking men aren’t struggling to find the ladies either. It’s a selective market place, which isn’t going anywhere.

I think the excessive monetizing of these platforms means many men subscribing to them will let themselves be strung along for every dollar the companies can milk from them.

But people are suckers like that. OLD platforms sell men a fantasy of being able to date or just fuck lots of appealing women they want. It’s similar to the lottery: the lottery sells a fantasy of being able to win millions of dollars. People will keep playing their scratch-offs even though most of them will never ever win.

OLD isn’t nearly as extreme or imbalanced as the lottery (a way higher fraction of people find what they’re looking for in OLD than via the lottery), but the goal of the companies isn’t to find everyone a perfect partner or spread love in the world; it’s to make $$$.

Not for Chad. For the 95 percenters, yes. Women on Tinder are looking for everything. Looks (8.5+ out of 10 minimum), money, status, clout, connections, you name it. Take the best guy you know personally; he probably wouldn’t get shit on swipe apps. Women’s standards are astronomical. There are cheat codes such as having 9/10+ looks that will let you bypass the money and status filters though. This is how you get those profiles of girls that work at as a middle manager while getting their MBA, have a full sleeve tattoo and a list of requirements like “NO broke men, NO deadbeats, NO losers, NO cheaters, NO dudes who entertain multiple women at the same time” and on and on. It’s because she always falls for that type of Chad, she knows she’s vulnerable to it and she knows god damn well that if another one shows up in front of her again with a drug habit and a motorcycle that her panties are going to fly off into the atmosphere; and that she’ll be paying his bills by the end of the month. So she writes it on her bio thinking “well if it happens it’s not my fault because I SAID I wouldn’t do it again” Women are as predictable as phases of the moon once you really understand them. Don’t listen to anything they say, just watch what they do. And online dating is the perfect way to watch their actions.

Online dating is quite fun. Back in the day when there was no other option, I used to hate going out to clubs. Too loud, too expensive, can't really get any proper conversation going. It was crap.

Now you can swipe through a variety of women from the comfort of your own home. You can pass the entire talking stage whilst lying in bed, hoovering the rug, or taking a shit. It's brilliant.

I really doubt with the amount of time people spend online, that online dating is declining. Possible that dating in general is declining because of the pandemic or for other reasons, but unlikely people are dating the old fashioned way. I was a huge fan of OLD but I’m an introvert and really enjoyed getting to know people through a week or two of messages before meeting them.
