Reminder: looks aren't the most important.

I disagree with this, I think looks are very important and the absolute first thing people will judge you on. But the bar is lower than most people think, especially the doomer men here.

For example, say a woman would date a 4/10 or higher (i.e. she will date someone slightly below average, but not a lot below average). If you're 4/10 or 5/10, you made the cut-off, and then all the other things you listed start to matter and could work in his favour. But if he's 3/10 or 2/10, he didn't clear the cut-off, and then no amount of the other things you listed will change the woman's mind about not dating him.

Don't take the math too strictly here, just an example on the proverbial 10-point scale. My point is that looks is the absolute first thing that comes into play. Most women in my experience are pretty reasonable about this, but if you don't meet that bar for her, then you stand zero chance. In that way, looks can absolutely be the most important factor if it's what's getting you filtered.

The 10-point scale is useless.

There's nothing useless about it, it's just an allegory that serves as shorthand. Instead of typing "average", "slightly below average", "below average", "unnatractive" every time, I can type 5/10, 4/10, 3/10, 2/10 respectively. The normal distribution of human attractiveness is something that objectively exists.

My point is that it's not the absolute first thing to come into play. A woman must first be interested in pursuing romance.

Ok, sure. This doesn't disprove what I said, you just added to it. You're right, the absolute first thing that matters is whether the person wants to date at all to begin with, that's fair. The absolute second thing that matters, which comes right after that, is looks. Everything else only ever comes into play after you clear the bar on looks.

But I'm willing to bet it's an extreme example.

It is a somewhat extreme example of an ugly man, but it's also a real one. Both ugly men and ugly women are real human beings that actually exist in the real world, and deserve respect, we shouldn't be sweeping them under the rug and not even acknowledge their existance.

Everyone has a point at which they consider attractiveness insufficient to date. That image is one man that the enormous overwhelming majority of women will consider insufficient. But for every man, there is a portion of women who wouldn't date them on the grounds of attractiveness alone (i.e. if I try to date an instagram model, the reality is that she is not going to even care to look at how intelligent/kind/moral I am, because I am not as attractive as all the other options she already has).

I said that looks aren't the only thing.

So did I. I never said looks are the only thing that matters. I said that looks is the first filter people use. Intelligence, confidence, kindness and all the other stuff only comes into play after people have already passed the looks filter.

If you're kind, intelligent, virtuous and overall a wonderful human being, but not attractive enough to meet someone's baseline attractiveness expectation, that kindness/intelligence/wonderfulness means jack squat, they will still not date you.

I'm pretty sure Chris Williamson just had a researcher on that confirmed the body type you're describing impresses dudes, not ladies.

Not sure if this is believable or not. Yes, statistics would agree that dudes would see that as a "peak male physique" but you can't say that it "doesn't impress the ladies" if not enough ladies participated in the first place.

And I'm not talking about the professional body-builder types, just lean/atheletic physiques. Swimmers build if you must.

most of them? really? I don't wanna argue in bad faith but I also cannot disprove that. Maybe your experience is different from what I know. But I have come across many more women who have an explicit preference of "sporty/atheletic" types than those who would prefer dadbods.

In my understanding, those who "prefer" dadbods would also prefer any other bodytype as long as the chemistry is right. So it's not really a preference per se. Just what they're 'open to'.

I mean, Ok. I mean this so like politely and kindly, but women are telling you otherwise and the science is as well. So I would interrogate why you as a man without the science on your side are insistent as to what young, hot, fit women want? What is tied up in this? And you aren't the only guy who thinks like this so like, not a super call out.

And, I will take a guess it's got something to do with men wanting to sort of dictate what women should find attractive and wanting women to value in them what they value in men. Or something sort of like that?

I understand your pov. It's just that I never see these two things as separate. So this thought process is alien to me. It's just like how women here say that looking at a visually attractive man is like looking at a beautiful painting or something but it doesn't inspire sexual attraction - such a weird concept (respectfully).

I'm sure that they all find different things attractive according to their individual tastes. No doubt in that. But it's just hard to believe that someone like that would prefer a quality that is objectively unappealing over one that is "better" in any measurable way. You know how younger, lean, "hot" women are considered attractive. How believable would it be if some random guy on a debate sub said that he prefers chubbier, old women physically over a stereotypical arm candy? Just to refute or falsify an argument about beauty standards?

Women see what physical qualities men respond to, right? I have seen women demand their potential partners be "tall", "sporty", "muscular" etc. Not the normal women who could be called 'average' or those desperately looking to get married. But the ones who are more in demand. It just makes me wonder if the women who don't have such strict preferences would start having them if they became as demanded in the dating market.

It's cool. It's so weird to me as a woman to imagine looking at a stranger and finding them like hot and ready to go (respectfully).

...but it's not unappealing is the thing. Again, the podcast went over it, but having some meat is a signal of durability, ability to fight in terms of lasting, and having plenty of food. If you look at UFC fighters who aren't cutting down a weight class, they look extremely fit, but with a little extra, why? Cuz being gaunt isn't going to give you durability. The guys cutting down a weight class are lean, but they're often in an unhealthy state.

I mean, I'd sort of believe him too is the thing, if you look at some older paintings the women have curves for a reason. That is a certain beauty norm because it signals fertility and plentiful resources.

I think it may help to realize fitness as evidenced by being lean and skinny isn't the only health related beauty standard. Fighting takes fat. Babies take fat. Having some chubby isn't inherently grotesque if it's on an otherwise fit body.

I agree tall, sporty, and muscular are a significant factor. I'm saying you can be those things and also have meat which is a signal of health, durability, and therefore male fertility.

I'm not attracted to guys who are lean and musclar, even when I was single in my teens/early 20s. However, I definitely find fitness attractive. Guys with muscles and some extra fat ("strong dad bod," if you will) have always been my ideal type. I'm relatively fit (thin and flexible) and was even more fit when I was younger. I do yoga/pilates and go on hikes frequently.

I think a lot of women are referring to the "strong dad bod" when they talk about dad bods.

Edit: Also, most men are the same way. At my lowest weight in my early 20s, I definitely lost some curves (even though I was quite fit). I received A LOT more male attention after gaining 10 pounds and getting my butt and hips back. I also looked healthier. Same goes for women's opinions on men's fitness. A little bit of fat looks healthy.
