Been a musician for decades, played in front of up to 3k people, I am fairly attractive, concerts never got me laid

Famous (hence also rich) rockstars get groupies regardless of their looks
Not famous musicians and semipros certainly get attention but unless they are really attractive they don’t get panties dropped in front of them, let alone by attractive women. I was approached post-gig several times by women I wasn’t attracted to, or who were too drunk or high (I am not a predator),

What I am trying to say is that artistry is certainly a boost (for me it’s a match criteria), but the grungy uggo that plays “nothing else matters” in front of the bonfire and gets laid with the beauty queen afterwards is a cheap trope with little adherence to reality.

Do music for yourself, if you do it to get laid it might not work as hoped

I went to a small concert once and there was a great punk band playing. After their set ended and the lights came on one of the girls in the crowd walked up to the guitarist and started chatting him up. The guy was pretty skinny and about 5'10. It definitely works still.

In the older paradigm (let's say up through the 90's, maybe 00's) average guys could pursue things like guitar (or another "cool" instrument within a given niche), going to the gym a few times a week, or having a nice car etc and get a decent bounce in desirability.

Women largely don't care about these things anymore unless you're in the top % of whatever - you can't just play guitar on the college quad, you need to be lead guitar in a fairly popular local band, or you need to look like an instagram roided fitness influencer, or you need to have a half million dollar car etc to really boost your chances with women. Exactly why this happened is one of the most debated things here (i.e. how much hypergamy really matters) but at least we can say that part of it is social media and OLD showcasing top% men where the achievements or skills of men that might have been impressive in the "small pond" of pre internet society are no longer impressive when compared to the "big pond" everyone is constantly exposed to.

Of course there are exceptions and some girls are probably still going to fall for the local guitar player, just much less so than before.

Music is not very important anymore….especially to young people. It became too easy to access, too cheap (free, in most cases), and outside of a tiny number of mega-acts (Beyoncé, Swift) no musical genre has had a new and lasting influence on society in a long time.

The fact is that recorded music and feature-length movies, while very pleasant, are ultimately 20th century pastimes of decreasing social and cultural relevance.

Anyway, I can confirm with others that playing music, even playing it live in a band, never seemed to increase my odds with women. They tended to be totally indifferent to it.

I play guitar and back when I had free time I even played in a local band. Until I improved my looks I was only getting below average girls interested in me. The lead singer that was chadlite was getting tons of stacies though.

Personally, I never cared that much for music.

But having a passion, especially a creative and productive one like art, is attractive. For anyone.

Don't take up hobbies to impress someone, do it because it's genuinely fun.

I’ve played in bands on and off for years. I’ve seen it get other dudes laid; but it never worked for me when I was single. Most people forget who you are 10 minutes after you walk off stage.

You should play music live because there’s something inside you that’s gotta come out; not because you think it’s gonna get you girls.

I’ve played since I was 9 and play at a professional level. Hasn’t helped me diddly squat.

Though I did have that discussion with my mum. I would rather get on stage with 5000 watchful eyes and no preparation, than go on a first date. The first date would give me so much more anxiety.

My brother is a lead guitar and sometimes vocalist in a small band. He’s got a prison record and no money and he pulls hot chicks all the time. He’s 6’4”, kinda handsome and charming as hell. Very fit. The stage gets him the opportunities and he closes them.

Back in the days - I was 17, I've had full head of hair and I was learning to play the guitar, I was beyond terrible and girls were offering me that they may help me improve a bit. My friend was almost a pro - but girls were not really interested in his playing or even talking to him, but the bassist from his band was getting a ton of attention.

In general - girls/women do not give a f..k about your hobby, if they like you it may be safe way for them to hang around you but it's not and never was a 'chick magnet'.

I was also invited by girls to help them with math and physics assignments - if I would have at least 30% of my brain functioning I'd probably understand that physics was not really the reason why i was invited. Unless physics is chick magnet as well.

I sang black metal (vocals and rhythmic guitar). Got me attention from women, sure, but I don't think I got laid more than once as a result of it. Maybe I would have if I had been more predatory.

Thing is that socialization also changed. The kind of small concerts of no more 300 people are much rarer today compared to 25 years ago.

it all depends, you need to actually also be cool. i think in the past, it was less common/pre internet, the musicians around you were the only ones you knew. now music can be perceived as a nerdy hobby sometimes, and there are millions of musicians who are remarkably mundane. especially guitar since its basically the most basic bitch and easiest instrument to learn, and this is also widely known.

so its like, playing is a multiplier to your existing charisma when mixed with talent. like talent decides the size of the multiplier and if your charisma is 0 obviously all the talent in the world wont change that, and if your talent is 0 playing your whole life will never matter.

Women have to value the act of guitar playing still for it to have any affect upon the men whom they are attracted to. I'm not sure if they still do. The most famous guitar player these days is probably Taylor Swift, a woman herself, so it's possible that it's not really seen as a "cool male" thing to do anymore. I'm not really sure, though, since I don't go out to social gatherings where men are playing guitars for women anymore.

If women thought writing computer code was cool, then those men would have a lot of sex.
