Let’s say the US government required every Black person to register for a selective service program that in the past has resulted in the deaths of many Black people.

I would 100% think that was relevant to discussions about race in this country.

I would think that even if it hadn’t been used recently. I would think that even if the program could hypothetically be changed to include white people.

It’s not just the Selective Service itself, it’s the broader attitude embodied by it that men’s lives are disposable.

Selective service is a rankly stupid idea that undermines armed forces morale, undermines general faith in our government and is stressful to young men and those who care for them. An all volunteer force is adequate during peacetime, and a universal draft is a reserve option if and only if the home front comes under attack.

It's an obvious legal example of double standard between men and women. Though a draft will likely never happen again, it serves an example. A better example would be sentencing disparity.

In 2005 Max Schanzenbach found that "increasing the proportion of female judges in a district decreases the sex disparity" in sentencing which he interprets as "evidence of a paternalistic bias among male judges that favors female offenders".[5]

In 2006 Ann Martin Stacey and Cassia Spohn found that women receive more lenient sentences than men after controlling for presumptive sentence, family responsibilities, offender characteristics, and other legally relevant variables, based on examination of three US district courts.[6]

In 2012 Sonja B. Starr from University of Michigan Law School found that, controlling for the crime, "men receive 63% longer sentences on average than women do," and "[w]omen are…twice as likely to avoid incarceration if convicted", also based on data from US federal court cases.[7][8]

Have you seen the state of the world right now? It is a very realistic possibility that WW3 could break out and young men would be drafted. It is oppression that to have the same rights as women, men have to sign up for the draft (women do not have to register). If the draft is called in, those men are made into essentially slaves to the government, and can be sent to go die somewhere in Siberia if the government so chooses, simply because of his sex. Men can be turned into slaves simply due to being men, while women don't have to worry about slavery because of their sex.

Most if not all states treat everyone as disposable, when the elites deem it beneficial to themselves. If it’s only the men who will get sent to war, then women get their reproductive rights stripped away (to ensure more exploitable workers and soldiers).

You’d be hard pressed to find a state that has a (male-only) active draft while also allowing women reproductive freedoms.

In any near peer fight there will be a draft.

This is complete and utter nonsense. Any war against a peer nation, like China and/or Russia, will involve draft. Just look at Ukraine, or Israel, and keep in mind that Israel is fighting Hamas not Russia. Any serious military conflict will involve draft. SS is a Damocles sword hanging over the head of every men in the US. As for abolishing it, why not abolish taxes while we are at it as well.

Hypothetically there could be a war, and you could be drafted - but hypothetically the law could be changed to require women to register for the SS, too. It simply isn't relevant to any debate about gender.

And hypothetically or not, it's still an issue that women will never have to contend with. Honestly I don't think women should really even have an opinion on it imo

It doesn’t matter, the fact that its there is enough. The fact that should ww3 start (and were very close to that actually happening) that some of us will be sent to die while others get to stay safe entirely based on discrimination. one who is unwilling to fight for the rights and freedoms they have , does not deserve to have them. And yet women get the privilege and entitlement to have the rights and freedoms without ever having to fight to defend them. Thats MAJOR privilege right there. But if the draft is really nothing and not a big deal then why don’t you and all the women go sign up.

The fact that women get to enjoy all the rights and freedoms men do, but never have to fight to defend them, and men are expected to have to get their bodies destroyed by bullets and bombs and shrapnel while women relax back at home and still have the utter nerve to say men have more privilege shows how unbelievably pompous and spoilt women are.

1) I guess you'd think it wasn't a big deal if there were a Selective Sex Service for women where if the birth rate fell too low, they'd start drawing numbers where you got paired with a single guy and had to make a baby? Probably never get used... just a hypothetical, so no problem with that law, right?

2) Funny to watch women go from "my body, my choice" to "it's an inconvenience" in one second.

3) Getting pregnant is just a hypothetical too until it happens.

Despite the above statements, I actually agree it's not a strong piece of evidence because it's unlikely to affect anyone. Still, it does point to a legal inequality and speaks to how society views men in general.

Selective Service comes with harsh penalties if you don't register so it's more than a minor inconvenience unless you don't mind either dying in war or going to jail."It hasn't happened in 50 years so it probably won't happen" is not a strong argument for functionally requiring half your population to sign away their rights. I don't think selective service is proof that men have it harder like it's a competition but in my opinion if it's only male citizens and immigrants being required to register it's obvious inequality under the law and should be rectified.

So what? Before WW1 there hadnt been a draft in the US for almost 60 years, that didnt stop them from implementing one. Just because one hasnt happened in a while thats not a valid argument to say it will never happen.

And I see a lot of comments on this post saying a draft would never happen again because it would be unpopular. Bullshit. The draft has never been popular among voters. Not even in WW2, when the best argument could be made for the necessity of the draft, was it popular. That has never stopped a draft from getting bipartisan support from both parties.

If a large scale war were to break out in the near future there would be a draft and it would be only on men. As there seems to be little political will from either Democrats or Repiblicans to make it gender nuetral.

this in itself doesn't prove that they have it harder. But it does set a president. Men are tough, violent and hard and women are weak and soft. Hence why we send men to war and leave the poor women home.

And this does reflect also in other areas. Because this attitude doesn't stop here. Men are more often expected to take hits and set backs and bounce back. They shouldn't dwell and complain about it for too long and should men up.

Also like I said men are viewed as more violent and what not so they often get harsher sentences than women. And not just that but in many cases they aren't believed over women especially by the public. For example if a woman says that a man has abused her, people will without seeing evidence be more inclined to believe her.

Men's suicide and death rates are higher and also those of assault. Yet somehow they don't have the same support systems as women. Hell even if they are victims of women, they often don't get taken as seriously. And that does reflect in men also willing to open up about stuff like it.

All this said, this doesn't prove that they have harder lives. Because you can also make a lot of arguments why being a woman is very and I mean very hard. But both sexes have their flaws and benefits.

But these differences almost never stop at one thing. And their underlying reasons often repeat in them. However you look at things, this is injustice. And it does make their life harder. You claiming that it shouldn't be brought up in the debate is very naive. Because it simply has greater effects than you think. Things like this influences others.

And also you are very much not factoring in that we live in a time where a new world war could happen any day. It wouldn't surprise me if we would witness it in our lifetime. And you as a woman had the luxury to fear being nuked. While many men fear of dying a much more painful and slow death on the battlefield. Because modern warfare still requires troops. Just look at Russia's war against Ukraine.
