A crucial key is family. In my culture, an extended family system is the norm. As opposed to a nuclear family system. So there’s always social occasions. Or even just dinners. Hangouts. Swims at each others pools. For example we just went to laser tag. My sister and her three kids. My wife and I, our two girls and our 2 year old boy.

Being a part of a big family, learning to not only contribute, but work together with cousins. Uncles. Aunts. Grandparents and the like. Is a huge benefit. It also builds a strong sense of filial duty. Which is immensely advantageous. Most successful people I know, have often been given ‘a leg up’. By someone close to them. As nepotistic as it is, it’s still a huge advantage.

Your comment reads like someone who has the concept of parenting “all figured out” in theory but has zero experience of the reality of dealing with a completely independent entity that is reliant on you, and you biologically love.

It’s not the same as training a dog for a dog show. Because unlike the dog, your child at any point can simply decide to go “no” to whatever your plans are, and then what? All that epigenetic prep and rigourous parenting and your child decides to become a celibate monk because that’s what makes them happy.

Then what? Would you be happy with that outcome?

I'll do what my parents did for me: be good role models of a healthy relationship, encourage him to socialize with his peers, get him into sports and teach him proper nutrition. It worked for me.

Just get him to socialize as much as possible, eat healthy food, and exercise. That’s all that’s really needed. Get him braces and stuff like that if necessary.

We have my son, and daughter as well, in extracurriculars & sports, my husband and I are elder millennial - me, gen - X him, and we had to go out if we wanted any social life at all. We limit screen time - which I’ll tell ya in this day in age is a real feat. We also help both to instill life skills and that’s not gendered. He helps with cooking, she helps with the lawn and vise versa. My husband knew all basic life skills - cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. by the time we met. Which seems like a simple thing but I knew no shortage of stunted men who couldn’t do their own laundry in my 20s.

At the end of the day though I can’t make a social life for them. They will adapt and learn with their peers and the best we can do as parents is give them the best foundation to start from.

I would do little to nothing that's directly aimed at helping them date. I see the goal of parenting to help your child become a good person who behaves well towards themself and others. Fretting over diets and hormones unless there's something very off is likely to make them a worse, or at least more anxious person, and wouldn't do me any good either. If they become a good person and one with at least a bit of extraversion, they'll be able to find a date if they want and if they don't want them I don't care to push them. Raising children to think that romantic relationships are the be all and end all and that how they look is a worthwhile activity to fixate on is hardly likely to help them go through life.

Encourage him to form friendships with girls and read books by women. There are plenty of hobbies you can encourage him into where he'll work with and alongside the opposite sex. The earlier he comes to view and enjoy women as three dimensional people, the better he'll be at navigating social and romantic situations.

Also, don't steer him away from situations where he will probably get his heart broken romantically. You should learn when you're young what is and isn't the end of the world so you can take risks confidently later in life (and not go psycho when rejected and become a real risk)

In regards to my own son:

1) Make them take up at least one sport and one musical instrument (their choice as to which ones).

2) Ensure they're involved in the arts.

3) Ensure they are involved in parties from an early age, I'll host them if necessary.

4) Teach them how to be respectful, how to take no for an answer but reinforce that taking the initiative is not as scary as you think it is.

5) Not let them become a basement dweller.

I have a teenaged son. And honestly, this is going to sound like a typical mom boasting about her kid, but my husband and I really lucked out with this kid because he’s extremely self-driven and motivated.

He has taken the initiative on his own to work very hard on both academics and athletics. So, I guess with the latter, he’s already developed an intense workout regimen that includes his soccer practice every day and probably an hour of lifting. He also cares about his appearance, including his hair and clothing. I’m sure this will benefit him as he gets older.

But the most important thing of all is socialization. I am a firm believer that a major contributor to the loneliness young men experience is their lack of socialization from a young age. Too many parents have allowed their kids to stay holed up inside playing video games and living on social media 24/7. And that’s obviously caused them to isolate and not make friends. Once those behaviors are established in their youth, it’s hard to correct that course as young adults. So, we’ve encouraged our son to find and make friends, and as such, he spends more time outside and hanging out with friends than he does inside on his devices.

I’d probably just tell my hypothetical son about how female attraction works when he gets older, and find any particular interest that he has that might attract women in the future while he is still young.

Force them to pick up 2 hobbies. 1. Sports - something cool like tennis, soccer or basket ball

artistic - singing, dancing, painting, instrument.

they get to pick ofcourse ... once. and then i will force them into classes and keep making them do it even if they hate the pressure until they are 18.

Hopefully they get to a intermediate level even if they hate it.

Plus No slacking off in school

Reward them with pocket money for reading one story book and one psychology book a month.

I would alson lightly red pill them. Not too quickly though, kids need idealism in their childhood.

At the end of it they would probably hate me and probably push me into an old age home or something, but I dont want them growing up and living my life

My son is 9yo.

Reduce his screen time. Weather allowing, he goes out to socialize with his peers (boys and girls living nearby).
I keep my wife, his mother, from selecting his clothes for him. He has his own style, he tells me what he wants to wear, his choices are pretty realistic.
We talk. He asks a lot of questions, I give him truthful answers (formulated so he can understand it), or tell him that I'll answer this question when he will be ready, I never lie to him. I also give him some hints, to show him how media try to manipulate him.
I encourage him to try active ways of spending free time (bike, scooter, swimming), and support his ideas (i.e. he is learning to ride a longboard).
In a year I'll try to introduce him to body-weight exercises.

Socialise them early. So they're not affraid to talk to girls. Don't let them get fat. Guide them into high earning field. Especially if they turn out to be not so great looking in the face.

I really like this post. I’m happy to see people talk about parenting as hopeful and intentional. Im making sure my son spends lots of time with his dad and grandfather, two men who really exemplify healthy masculinity. And putting a big emphasis on morality. It’s not talked about enough in this sub but most of what women are looking for is actually character. Honesty, hard working, loyalty. So many men today have hearts of complaint, cannot be trusted, and have little work ethic. All the best men I know, only sit down in the day to eat (effectively). I can’t provide that too my son because of health issues but I make sure he gets it anyway. Also I am Christian, I believe purity is for men and well as women so I’m teaching him that. And generally making sure he has the experiences to foster the necessary growth he needs to have competence in life including socializing, time in nature, plenty of labor tasks, and fostering a spirit of joy and gratitude.
