I don't know sign language, so probably not. In general it sounds like you've got a rough situation that is going to need a very special lady (I'd think other mute people or a deaf person might be a good fit?)

I admit, a lot of what you put is a hard no for me, but I'd think if you went seeking a really specific kind of girl, you could find success.

Does he use American Sign Language? If I met a guy I got along with great and was compatible with me, I’d be fine with learning sign language so we could communicate better. We’d have to hit it off first though, so maybe if he was in the same independent movie making group as me (for example) and had some way of communicating (even just text to speech on the phone). Also he’d have to be ok with me being autistic as well (as well as comorbidities like depression, trichotillomania, and sensory issues).

I have a son who is nonverbal at 12. He can hear and understand other people. He uses an assistive communication device, some signs and gestures, and some word approximations.

Honestly, though? As he enters puberty, I hope dating doesn't become an issue. It would just be too complex. It would be really difficult for him to really get all the necessary subtleties of human interaction across.

What does he truly understand about consent? What does he understand about balancing others' needs with his own? What does he understand about romance or sexuality or dating? I just don't know.

There was a less enlightened time in life where I didn't think I could feel attraction to a guy with a speech impediment. Until I did, and I loved him with everything in me. There were many times he felt more comfortable if I ordered for him or took charge in certain social situations. My personality is suited for that, so it worked. So I don't think it hurts to try, and if thinks don't work out, they don't work out. Low risk, high reward.

Probably not, but that's because there would be very low chances that we'd meet and form the connection required to actually start feeling any romantic interested in this person. I can imagine that it could work out from meeting online and texting for a very long time, but I'm not in favor of online dating or long-distance relationships. Also outside of being mute being autistic could be a dealbreaker depending on just how severe it is and how a person deals with it.

I don't know sign language, if I knew it and I really liked the person, then maybe? But I wouldn't date someone who can't speak, is socially awkward, has social anxiety, and is autistic. At that level of, for the lack of a better word, disability, I would feel like I would be this person's social worker, rather than their partner. I don't think I'd be a good partner for such a person. I also don't think that person could join me in things I like doing because a lot of them involve being out in public and doing things with other people, so they wouldn't be a good match for me.

My biggest concern would be how we would communicate. I know a bit of BSL but not enough to comfortably go on a date and I wouldn't learn a new language just to go on a date. If there was a way of solving that problem then those traits wouldn't rule that man out, but I'd need to actually like him to ask him out of course.

Can you sign though? With how you explained selective mutism in the comments it sounds like you wouldn't be able to sign either because you freeze up and can't communicate, but just curious. Or like write out what you want to say if you can't speak or sign? Or is all of that shut off by anxiety?
