I think this is completely rational but some people still think this is a hot take. Basically if your standards are things that you yourself cannot achieve, they're too high, if they're things you've succeeded beyond, they're too low.
Like this:
-I don't live with my parents anymore, so I refuse to date people who still live with mom and dad
-I have a job so I'm not dating someone who doesn't have a job
-I have lots of hobbies, opinions, interests and philosophies, so I avoid people that can't hold a conversation
-I'm a healthy weight, I don't have to date people who are not also a healthy weight
-I'm generally considered a 7/10, though some would consider me a 10/10 or a 5/10 depending on how attracted they are to my specific aesthetic
-I shower, shave, brush my teeth and hair everyday, this is reasonably a minimum requirement
that also means:
-I don't make a ton of money, I shouldn't aim for a partner that is rich
-I can't drive, I shouldn't expect a partner to drive or own a car
-I'm not incredibly athletic, I can't expect a partner to be fit-I'm not exceptional at cooking, I can't expect a guy to be willing to cook for me
This should be considered completely fine but the number of people that have blown up my posts for not wanting to date guys who still live with their parents and don't have a job, are obese, or balding, is a shocking amount. In my opinion my standards are the BARE MINIMUM for someone of my quality and the same could be said for anyone else.
This also means different rules apply for a different person. Mr. L for this scenario:
-Is obese, so he shouldn't expect thin women to be interested
-Only plays video games and has no other hobbies so he shouldn't demand a girlfriend with a wide variety of talents or skills that he couldn't possess
-showers once a week so he can't expect his potential mate to smell like roses-has a long dirty unkempt beard and wild bush of pubes so he can't demand his potential mate be perfectly smooth and shaved everywhere
-relies on his parents so he shouldn't go after women that have a job and their lives together
-refuses to go down on women, so blow jobs are off the table
This also means OTHER rules ALSO apply for a person like Mr. H:
-owns a sports car so he can demand his partners can afford nice things
-is incredible shape, so he can expect his girlfriend to be thin and athletic
-is well groomed so he can hope his partner keeps herself clean and is also well groomed
As long as none of these people are being rude or petty all of their standards are valid and shitting a woman for expecting an equal partner is BS. I'm tired of being told I'm petty for refusing to date guys who still live with their moms and don't have a job. I'm not petty, you need to upgrade or accept your place.
This also meansFat person with sports car =/= thin person without sports car.Rich person without any hobbies =/= poor person with an enriched life of hobbies.
These things are NON transferrable. You can settle for someone not alike in every way, but you cannot say "I own a fancy car therefor I deserve a thin person as a partner." nope. If you're lucky you'd might find one but those things are not the same. You're still making demands you can't meet

I don't normally consider a personality disorder a part of someone's standards or not. When a personality disorder is being well treated, it's not often even noticeable or affecting the relationship in any way, so it's not really anyone's business. Similarly it's 100% not my business if someone has schizophrenia but is well medicated and doesn't show many symptoms, or if someone has a strong phobia of heights but just calmly chooses not to go to high places, or if someone is diabetic but takes care of the problem by themselves just fine. It's not a relationship factor unless it's untreated and out of control, and then I just a person by the way they treat me and how it affects the relationship. My BPD affects me internally much more than it affects others externally, and in that sense it doesn't matter. I think it's unethical to make someone's history of trauma or disorder of any kind of part of your standards if it doesn't inhibit their ability to be a good partner and honestly you're being a really shit person right now digging through my history just to try and insult me about it.

Choose one. It is most definitely inhibiting your ability to be in a healthy relationship, so yes, they have a right to know. A mentally healthy partner is a perfectly normal base standard.
[–]AnonPinkLady1 points [recovered] (4 children) | Copy Link
It's not though lol. also a huge amount of people are just undiagnosed. You can avoid certain mental health disorder knowing full well what they entail, but personally, I'd date the hell out of another person with BPD and also be happy to meet the same emotional stability and competency of someone considered neurotypical so, either way it doesn't matter. Also I've dated people without any diagnosis that were easily less put together than I am emotionally and mentally with an endless list of problems. Human beings are complicated. Everyone has problems some just fit certain diagnosable labels and some don't. Some diagnosed with stuff are more put together than you I'm sure of it. but if you wanna interrogate every partner you meet about having mental healthy issues be my guest.

What happened to being on the same level as them?? Do you immediately share your complete sexual past? The number of hook ups, fwbs, past relationships and all of that to see if you meet their standards?
[–]AnonPinkLady1 points [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link
That's again, not a standard I have.
[–]YouAskedIt1 points [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link
But it is a standard for many other people. Would that be a problem? Why are you getting offended over other people being allowed to have perfectly reasonable standards if they meet them?

That's so dumb lol
It's ok to want a partner who's good at different things than you. You suck at cooking? There's nothing wrong with wanting a partner that's good at it. You're bad at budgeting? It's a great idea to find a partner who's good at it. You're bad at fixing stuff, at doing maintenance around the house? Finding a partner who's good at it is a good idea.
Find someone who completes you. :)
