As someone with Tourette's, this is absolutely true. I have never had to do this, but I know other people with Tourette's who do, and it is genuinely shitty to make fun of them for it. Believe it or not, they are extremely self conscious about it, and people making fun of them for it is their worst nightmare.

I believe the term originated in the New York subway system. Being crowded as they are, people started blaming it on "manspreading". To an extent (evidenced in OP) this was countered by pictures of women effectively taking up two seats by placing their bag/purse on the adjacent seat.

I think part of that attitude is bolstered by people with attention seeking behavior portraying mental illness online and it being glorified in the media. While ~60% of people will experience some mental health crisis there is a big difference between a short term and a chronic condition.

What /u/featurelessskinsuit is likely referring to is that to hold back a Tourette's tic isn't merely a pain in the ass, it's legitimately terrible feeling and, for prolonged periods, exhausting.
How best to describe Tourette's (which actually is closer to OCD than epilepsy in how it works and feels) is like your whole body needs to sneeze. You get that buildup and it feels inevitable, and it feels so good when you've completed it.
But you can hold it in. If you try real hard. Imagine holding in a sneeze though, for an exam, or a plane ride. Hours of holding in a sneeze with your nose itching and burning, your eyes watering.
It's not an inconvenience, it's truly torturing.

What IS torture is someone with Tourette consciously holding in a tic (for those who even can) in order to avoid the consequences of letting it out. The discomfort builds up and has to get released eventually.

My best friend in high school had epilepsy. It was mostly under control, but I knew about it because he and I spent so much time together, and he had a seizure once when we were driving. It was all good until he had a seizure at school. You really can learn a lot about people when you see their reactions to something like that. His list of friends was already kinda short, but after that seizure his list got very short. One of the best friends I ever had.

That's what makes support groups so valuable.
Us adults don't wish any harm on others when they fall ill (especially mentally ill), but most adults have pretty complex lives outside of their friendships. As we age, friendships become less of a big deal. In school we want to have whole groups of friends, but as adults the number often drops and many of our "friends" are made up of family, spouses, and co-workers we don't hate, with fewer of the traditional close friends.
If one of the 20 falls ill, and they're not someone like a sibling, or a spouse, we often, subconsciously or consciously, say to ourselves, "I got enough on my plate, someone else can handle that."
But if everyone does that, then they can often end up with no one.
I had a close(ish) friend. Invite to the wedding and reception close, but not wedding party close. He had some sort of delusional episode and that evaporated very quickly. At first I tried to help, but I was out of my depth and it got exhausting (and eventually he fixated on me and I had to extract myself for his own sake).
I knew by that point that all he had left were his parents and no one else, but I could couldn't keep up without either being more damage than help for him, or just being exhausted emotionally for myself. I had my own life. I had gone back to school, I had a marriage to be a part of, and other friends who weren't hallucinating.
I'm not claiming I'm right or wrong in my actions, but having been there and knowing that I am in no way a saint, and most other people aren't too, there is reason behind this.

Yep, pretty much exactly their reaction. No females wanted to date him (or even talk to him), and very few of the guys wanted to be friends. More than a few times I had some guys say to me "why are you friends with him?? He's a freak!" It was a very enlightening period for me, and was one of many experiences that made me want to study psychology.

My hair was falling out, rumors went around that I had cancer, it was alopecia. Even though I denied having cancer I still got bullied for having cancer.
After a bit it turned into rumors that I was faking cancer even though I had always denied it was cancer in the first place.
I even got in trouble because some teacher who had cancer thought I was pretending to have cancer and was insulted by it. Students knew she had cancer and got together tell her they saw me shave my head in the locker room. With alopecia there isn't even stubble where the hair is missing.

Kind of related but I had a doctor visit and knew I would need to provide a urine sample so I drank a lot of water for a few hours before (I'm bad at peeing on command) anyways I'm on the way to the doctor and have to go so bad it's nearly dripping out on its own and Im nearly to the office when i feel it comming I hold it in and bam! Not at all! Tourette's is not just shouting out curse words all the time. In fact, cases like that make up only 10 percent of those with Tourette's syndrome. Every case is different, so it may happen, but it would be an extremely rare occurrence. I have Tourette's, and it is exactly nothing like Deuce Bigalow. That was a funny movie, though, and after it came out I feel like Tourette's got some much-needed understanding
TS is a neurobiological disorder primarily characterized by involuntary motor or vocal tics, that the patient can suppress for short periods of time at the expense of great effort. I have no vocal tics, but I have some very noticeable physical ones. When I am suppressing them - say, at a job interview - I experience a sensation very similar to holding my breath. Go ahead, take a deep breath and hold it. Keep holding.... Longer. That is the exact sensation I feel. I must tic. Not doing so is not an option, not for long. Also, much like breathing, I can tic manually (when I am thinking about it, it gets worse, so I "let them out" to make the discomfort go away), or I can just exist, and they happen on their own.

Also a person with TS here, I find physical tics to be much easier to suppress than vocal ones. Taking deep breaths helps calm down my nerves, but when I have an active vocal tic, sets me off to the point where I can't take a breath, and makes me light headed. It's good to see the feeling that I have typed out in words that I can use when someone asks me, "Well why don't you just stop, then?"

There are some medications that help slightly, but they are mainly seizure medicines. As far as I know, no medicine has ever been made directly for Tourette's Syndrome.

Just to be clear, an individual without any vocal tics has a chronic motor tic disorder. At least one vocal tic is required for a Tourette's diagnosis.
I'm not trying to take away the significance or severity of your disorder. I have Tourette's and my motor tics are by far the most distressing. Rather, I'm just clarifying.

I was diagnosed by two neurologists at a young age, then had the diagnosis reaffirmed when I was 18. I definitely have Tourette's. When I was a child, I did have vocal tics. The tics that stayed through puberty and adulthood are all motor. My neurologist who reaffirmed her diagnosis said that it is common for TS to become less severe during the transition to adulthood.
I'm curious now, have you ever had any tics go away? I have had a couple big ones that have stayed the same throughout my life, and other minor ones that have disappeared or changed over time

I have had several tics go away that only come back during times of extreme anxiety. I have been able to focus most of my tics to my neck, resulting in several different head tics. I'm 20 now and my tics are worse than they have ever been, leaving me with additional experience with the disorder. I develop new tics somewhat often, but they normally go away. Tics in general wax and wane.
I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. As an adult TS sufferer, I try to educate about the disorder when it is mentioned. I hope to deter people from teasing younger TS patients.
Honestly, Tourette's is just a classification and really has no meaning outside of a doctors office so I now see that my comment was not necessary. Your neurologist is correct that tics normally diminish in adulthood and vocal tics going away is completely normal.

Had a man and his wife come into my restaurant and he was wearing a kilt and he looked badass. I think kilts (and even some skirts) look really awesome on men. I don't know why and, as a woman who loves skirts in general, I say skirts for everyone!

A good bra is like $50-$70 at minimum so if you get one and are poor and either grow out of it(also boobs tend to change sizes a lot over life time, back and forth) or didn't actually have a chance to get measured correctly you're pretty stuck with it. Also, I have never met a women that followed the example you wrote, and I'm an owner of titties. Keep in mind if the bra fits as badly as your example says it's gonna make her clothes look wonky on top of it being uncomfortable or the boobs would just overfill the bra and come out.

Have any of you guys ever been on a plane/train and destroyed your thigh/calf muscles from flexing the entire trip to purposefully keep your legs from relaxing to their natural position for fear that this would infringe on your neighbour's seat space?
