Most of male suicide has to do with divorce. Many men do not handle divorce well at all. I've spoken with several who admitted feeling absolutely powerless in family court and considered suicide.

And I've known a couple that actually went through with it

Most of America's economy is pretty much trashed at this point (many gains since the recession went to the upper classes). It's kinda hard for people to stay afloat when they lose their jobs and there is no way to redirect them to markets, careers and life situations that are conducive to a better than poverty level lifestyle. If we are being real here, there is a huge need for retraining programs for workers from dying industries, and government support for continued education of workers. It doesn't help that opioids are often the most readily available indulgence most people have, especially in communities with less diverse economies.

The US in general treats its poor worse than other developed nations, and poor Americans are generally demoralized imo. Income mobility in the US as it was advertised to my parents when they came over, is more myth than matter in 2018.

The man who suffers a divorce and unemployment has become an outcast in his own life.

His once together family is gone, wife is fucking another guy or woman, the kids are ripped from his care, the friends he had at work are gone, and it takes longer for the middle-aged to get another job, even then the pay will likely be less.

When people talk about men being under appreciated this is one example. Society loves him when he wins and casts him out when he loses.

Top that with the "men don't cry" attitude and he has a whole lot of unpacked emotions. With no support from society and his social support structure gone, is there any wonder why he chose to pull the trigger.

I wouldn't think that. Women are still desired by men even into old age. There are men who have "hit the wall" looking to settle with women who have or may have not yet "hit the wall" at that age. For men, it's easier to drift off into the void.

Admittedly, I didn't read through the entire article, but what you'll often see in articles like these is they'll manipulate the data in a way that categorizes divorced men as single. If you stratify suicide rate by divorced men explicitly, it's sky-high relative to actually single or married men, which is what you would generally expect since the men in question here are middle-aged (roughly in the average age range a man gets divorced).

To be clear, there seems to be cultural differences in which men may not seek support groups vs. women who are more inclined to. Though the above research does seem to incline that the # of support groups for women are higher than men.

Just looking through everyday media, more results pop up for support for homeless women vs homeless men. ESPN/Nfl breast cancer awareness vs prostate cancer....

It all comes down to friend groups. The 40-something man who is unmarried and/or unemployed probably has no friends. What reason do you have to NOT off yourself?

I think, generally, women have more friends than men, and they're more likely to seek help.

Why would you think women would have it harder? Its much easier for a woman to get help when her life goes off the tracks. Men in her life will bend over backwards for her. Family will come to her rescue. If all else fails there are more social services available to women (particularly if she can present herself as some kind of victim). And women can seek this help without losing face since they're not expected to be strong and just suck it up.

Down and out guys are not a priority. There is little help available and many guys can't bring themselves to grovel for what help is available.

Sure many middle aged guys can put their lives back together after a crisis. However, there are also many who cannot. If a guy looses his job and his family at an inopportune time its easy for his life to spiral out of control to the point where suicide seems like the best choice.

I have a lot of compassion for people who are down and out. There is no joy in knowing that divorced, jobless men are taking their own lives- this is a victory for no one. My opinion is that men are lonelier and have less friends than women and so no one reaches out to help them before it's too late. For shame.

It's very easy to be single. I have been single for years, decades. What's sad is being old, fat, ugly and bald, which is what those guys suffer from. They wouldn't be complaining about being alone if they managed to get laid. Get their balls empty, enjoy some time with a chick, then come home to silence and quiet? The bathroom is all to yourself? You don't have to dig into 10000 beauty products to find your shaving cream and razor? Having your bed all to yourself? Heavenly.

Men are stupid. They put all of their power onto women's hands by marrying them, by having kids with them, hell even by co-habitating with a woman you're risking getting kicked out from your own home when she grows bored with you. Enjoy your time with women but don't take them seriously, and if you want kids do it like Cristiano Ronaldo did: use a surrogate mother, a rent-for-hire womb, and raise your own kid.

I bet it beats paying child-support for a kid fathers aren't allowed to see much, no?

Is it mostly gen Xers that fall into that category? Because if so I can think of a couple reasons relating to addiction and alcohol abuse that might be contributing factors.
