How can an airline assure that a flight is nut free? Maybe they can assure that they aren't serving nuts but how do to assure that every other passenger hasn't brought any onboard? Or a passenger on a previous flight hadn't dropped two peanuts between the seats where the woman is sitting? American airlines specifically doesn't offer any nut free assurances as it their right and they do so in writing. Who is she to demand that they change their policies?

There's no way the airline can guarantee zero nuts of any kind on a plane unless there are several other layers of things accounted for.

1 - they'd need to physically search every piece of on board luggage and even people's pockets not just x ray because peanuts/nuts won't show up in them.

2 - they'd need to ban their flight waiting area stores from having any nut products.

No one's ever going to guarantee that besides a fucking private jet because of how impossible it would be to do so without extreme expense.

I'm sorry your allergy is so severe that even the dust can set you off, but if you know you have such an extreme allergy you should know by now that most of the due diligence is on you. Especially if most people don't know.

It’s impossible to ensure an allergen-free environment, but is it unreasonable to ask small accommodations such as serving chips or pretzels instead of peanuts for a flight? I don’t think it’s that big of an ask…

My wife was a flight attendant for a different major airline and if my memory serves correct (she’s not nearby for me to ask for certain) they didn’t have to serve peanuts but couldn’t force passengers not to eat peanuts they had brought into the plane themselves. Flight crew could ask the plane to voluntarily not eat nuts but couldn’t enforce it. If that’s wrong, it’s not because she misinformed me but rather my memory is flawed.

-edit- She just texted me back. Policy on their airline was they cannot ensure an allergen free environment. They had the option of not serving nuts but couldn’t enforce passengers from bringing their own.

Person with severe peanut allergy here: certain airlines (Delta, Jet Blue, British Airways) will avoid serving nuts / make statements to passengers to not eat nuts on the flight if you have an allergy registered prior to arrival. They also let you pre-board to clean surfaces from possible contaminants. Let’s not try to tie people with disabilities (allergies are disabilities under the ADA) to others’ political stances / worldviews. Now that all said, American is not one of the airlines that will cater to this requirement, so she should not have that expectation.

I don't even see why this is an issue. I was recently on a flight from Atlanta to Amsterdam and overheard there was a passenger with a nut allergy and they removed all the peanuts from the plane before we took off.

Maybe delta takes it more seriously but I thought it was probably standard for airlines.

Altough nut allergy is serious, the danger isnt directly in nuts but mainly if there is a little residues of nuts (wich there almost always is in industrial products) it can cause severe allergic réactions, wich can be fatal even in the smallest amounts. Altough yes the airplane shouldnt have to accomodate people with allergies, it should be them who bring their own nut free stuff, the only adaptation form the airplane should be to have the medicine nescesary to avoid death if there is an allergic reaction.
