Can men and women sustain a true platonic relationship?

I was thinking about our loneliness epidemic and how we might be able to overcome it. That made me think of a dating service for people that just want to be friends. I know there are some services out there that have tried this unsuccessfully and I started to wonder why.

My hypothesis is that women would not want to meet with men to be friends. Men of course, would love to hang out with women who have shared interest. The problem is of course, that if women don’t use a service, men won’t either and the service will fail.

Then that got me to think more about my own life and the fact that I’ve never really had any close platonic female friends, at least not for long. There is almost always an attraction from one party to the other, and if not, the friendship always seems to dissolve. Also, if one person becomes involved in a romantic relationship, the friendship is also likely to dissolve due to jealousy/time constraints.

So what have your friendship experiences been with the opposite sex, and is it even possible for men and women to be “just friends” for any significant length of time?
